We use Joinby as a platform for all students, giving them a channel to connect with like-minded people. New students can get linked up to a buddy (an experienced student) if they wish, and vice-versa for experienced students who would like to help a fresh(wo)man. As the app is available in both Dutch and English and messages are being translated from Dutch to English if desired by the user, the app is also very widespread among our international student community.

Pros

Students can get in touch easily using Joinby, either by chatting 1-on-1 after filtering on interests, age, programme etc., or by joining one of the many interest groups set up by other students. Joinby was very helpful with developing a few additional features, such as a buddy feature for new students or an automated translation option for our international students (Dutch messages are being translated to English).

Cons

It would be nice to have more analytics to see how many students actively use the app and how they are using it.

We were looking for a platform that allowed our incoming students to already connect with each other before the start of the academic year. Since privacy regulations don't allow us to share phone numbers or email addresses of students with other students, this app was a great solution to already connect them.

Pros

Joinby can help to create an online community for different industires and purposes. We use it as a closed community to connect our newly incoming students with each other before the academic year starts. It offers our students the option to filter on program, interest, academic year, etc. which makes it easy for them to find students from the same program as theirs or with similar interests. It also offers the option to chat 1:1 without immediately having to become friends on social media or to exchange phone numbers / email addresses. Especially when students haven't met in person yet, this forms less of a barrier for them.

Cons

Students have to be added manually to the platform which is quite time consuming. It is another app that students need to download and keep track off. We notice that as soon as the academic year starts our students switch back to more traditional communication apps like Whatsapp.

In short reply to the Cons: - Manually adding students is indeed needed if you want to add their personal email address. If your students have an @youruniversity.com email address they can join themselves without any manual work. - Switching to traditional platforms indeed happens after people get to know each other. In our view this is fine because the connection was made! In the future, we aim to improve our platform by making it easy to find people who're also in for something, so that we keep offering value also after the initial connection.
