### "Worth the price"

August 20, 2021

5.0

Pros

I like this software because it is browser-based and also has an app. I often work on multiple computers and I don't want to have to install new software everywhere I go. It's great for citations, but I like it even more for managing my pdf library. The main reason I got it was to work with Google Docs.

Cons

There are a few quirks about exporting bibtex files and other minor details, but nothing really problematic.

### "A one stop solution for your paper collection and reference management"

August 21, 2021

5.0

I have been using it since after my graduate studies. I've happily stayed due to features introduced later. It has made my workflow pretty smooth.

Pros

I have stayed with Paperpile more many different reasons but, most importantly the promptness with which your team listens to our feedbacks and problems. I like annotations, hand-written notes on pdf.

Cons

Lack of desktop app is very much desired. I have a general suggestion for the design and aesthetic team. Currently with Apple pencil and other handwriting devices with or without e-Ink are capturing a major fraction of students, faculties as well as researchers in both academia and engineering such as computer science, manufacturing. If you can include some slid features in handwriting and manipulation of PDF, that would attract almost any student with an iPad/Microsoft/Samsung/Android tablet. I think your handwriting is already a very improved version and captures it well in the summary export. With few additions such as these below, your app can also cover the different userbase where people don't care much about handwriting app nuances but, still require to have it. \* add page: notes/texts on the added page can be exported page as text via OCR. \* export in Docx, \* highlighter A nice desktop app will easily integrate generated export files into other workflows -- GoogleDoc, Latex. I have currently two different apps, one for doing full handwriting work on pdf and the other for reference and notes management, Paperpile. I would like to have both capabilities in one. Apps to watch when you expand the Paperpile userbase -- Goodnotes5/Notability, Liquid Text, and Tiddlywiki. Tiddlywiki is a general knowledge management concept that takes into account non-directed graphs and multiple relationships I think this is directly applicable to reference management system.

Switched from

[Mendeley](https://www.capterra.com/p/233913/Mendeley/)

Because Paperpile allowed me to manage my references manageable locally in addition to pdf annotation and hand-written notes on pdf. Later, with the addition of Overleaf and Latex integration justified that decision.

### "Indispensable, but needs improvement "

August 20, 2021

5.0

Pros

Paperpile is a cloud reference management system that keeps the papers and annotations organized. It also greatly makes collaborative writing easier. having the papers on Google drive and powerful extensions for Google Docs and Microsoft Word is a huge plus.

Cons

There are certain cons that always bite me as a user: 1- The PDF files for IEEE papers are cannot be imported automatically, this is particularly hurting STEM researchers. I think having a robot for fetching the PDF is not a hard thing compared to the amazing work the Paperpile team has done so far. 2- An extension for Overleaf would be awesome. 3- Collaborative work over Micrisift Word is almost impossible, leaving the references broken.

### "This is the most affordable and user-friendly way to organize our PDFs and related files"

August 30, 2021

5.0

What was once a disorganized and frustrating experience with saving and organizing research papers, books, and PDFs has become a simple and straightforward process I can manage with the click of a button.

Pros

We began using Paperpile for the 1-click ease of use for saving and organizing files. We were delightfully surprised by how Paperpile works seamlessly with search engines to highlight pdf download options straight from the search page. It updates all the relevant info about the PDF with simple options for editing and organizing.

Cons

We have yet to try to integrate files and folders with a CRM or data base so we could not say anything regarding this functionality.

### "Paperpile makes citing easier!"

August 30, 2021

Overall Paperpile is very useful in my day-to-day life. I just submitted a scientific paper with citations all managed by Paperpile! I will continue to use this.

Pros

I like the seamless in-text citation ability and the automatic bibliography creation feature.

Cons

### "Paperpile is the best citation and PDF library management option"

August 25, 2021

5.0

Love it.

Pros

Paperpile's integration with Chrome and Google Drive is outstanding, and now with citation plugins for Google Docs and MS Word, it offers everything I need from a literature management software. In particular, the ease with which I can add citations and PDFs from any webpage to my library on the fly is great. I've used other softwares in the past -- both stand-alone (Papers) and browser-integrated (Zotero, Mendeley) -- and Paperpile beats them all hands down for ease of use, without sacrificing functionality. If you're a Chrome/Google Suite user, Paperpile is the way to go.

Cons

The library search functionality is limited -- searching by journal or year published or first/last author should be a little more straightforward. Tab management is also a little buggy -- new tabs sometimes open in odd places, not adjacent to the current tab.

[Papers](https://www.capterra.com/p/210748/Papers/)

My new company offered Paperpile and its Chrome integration is smoother and easier to use than a standalone app.

Thanks for the nice feedback, Matthew! We are actually very nearly implementing advanced search features in the library (targeted search, full-text search, phrase search), so there should be news soon. I've reminded the team about the tab opening in random places, which is a known thing they haven't been able to prioritize.

### "Great for research "

August 25, 2021

5.0

This is the easiest way I’ve found to collect and organize literature.

Pros

Paperpile is the easiest software I’ve used to manage PDFs and other documents for research. Running within chrome and using google docs or word for citations is more straightforward than endnote, mendeley, or zotero, without clunky app interfaces.

Cons

The PDF viewer and annotations are great in iPadOS, but can be distracting if I share a paper with my team. Collaborative annotations has been a “coming soon” feature for a while, and development is overall pretty slow.

Switched from

[Mendeley](https://www.capterra.com/p/233913/Mendeley/)[EndNote](https://www.capterra.com/p/234808/EndNote/)

Mendeley was unstable and permanently corrupted itself, endnote was clunky, slow to load, and also frequently crashed. Neither was great at pulling metadata.

We appreciate the earnest feedback, Bjorn! Indeed, our development has been slow and unpredictable as a small self-funded team, so there have been several unfulfilled promises/expectations over the years. Our team has grown recently and has been hard at work rewriting our entire UI and extension, so there should be novelties "soon" ;) Since I think you've already expressed interest for this feature, I'll add this feedback to the topic on our tracker as a +2 from you to bump up its priority.

### "I literally recommend this to everyone. "

August 20, 2021

5.0

Despite my issues with Chrome, I recommend Paperpile to all of my coworkers (I've gotten about half of my grad program on the Paperpile train). It's easily the most user-friendly citation manager I've ever used.

Pros

Best feature is that it is so easily integrated into my workflow. I use Google Drive for my cloud storage, and it's incredibly convenient to have all of my PDFs clearly labeled and easily findable.

Cons

That it is ONLY easily integrated into Google Chrome. I hate Chrome as a browser, and I do wish that Paperpile were more easily integrated into other browsers or Chrome derivatives (e.g., Brave).

Switched from

[Papers](https://www.capterra.com/p/210748/Papers/)[EndNote](https://www.capterra.com/p/234808/EndNote/)

I wanted to be able to annotate PDFs, search, tag, and alter all meta data and I couldn't find that in any of the other citation managers that I tried, or there was too steep of a learning curve and I didn't have time to make the switch. Though there was a bit of upfront work in migrating all of my (1500+ at the time) papers, it was WELL worth it.

Thanks for the wonderful feedback, Alissa, and for being an advocate of Paperpile <3 You can actually install the Paperpile extension in any Chromium-based browser (like MS Edge, Brave, Vivaldi) and have all our features available there. ### "Good for Google Drive Users"

August 25, 2021

5.0

Pros

I have been using paperpile for 3 years. This is a citation management tool which runs all in the web browser, unlike most similar software that runs as a desktop application. There are a wide selection of citation output formats that work with Paperpile and it has always been a simple process to use. It also saves a PDF of each paper you cite into Google Drive for later reference.

Cons

Sometimes the Google chrome plugins crash randomly and you have to restart your browser to get it to recognize changes. Did not have an iPhone app until very recently.

### "Good but some issues"

August 20, 2021

4.0

I am not solving business problems with Paperpile? That is not the goal? In any case, my overall experience has been very good and I would recommend Paperpile to others. However, there are some clear areas where it could be improved.

Pros

The fact that it (mostly) works well with google docs is one of the main positives for me. I also appreciate the ease of use of being able to add papers with a couple of clicks from the journal website or from a page of google search results. Even putting aside the google docs feature, Paperpile has been overall much nicer to use than Mendeley, which was what I used before.

Cons

Sometimes Paperpile is really buggy and stops being able to find items when I'm trying to search for them to add a citation. Refreshing the google doc fixes this, but it's very annoying to have to do that every 5 minutes on days when Paperpile is deciding to act up. I also wish there was a little bit more functionality related to shared folders. Something I would like to be able to do is have a shared folder with colleagues where we can see each other's labels or folders associated with each item (this of course is something you would want to be optional!). The "export clean copy" feature is EXTREMELY hard to find and poorly documented.

Review Source

Response from Paperpile

September 7, 2021

Thanks for the feedback, Claire! We would be interested in hearing more about your experience in Google Docs - sometimes things in the browser environment (like other extensions) can negatively impact our functionalities and cause disruptions like what you describe, so it would be good to at least rule that out. Please feel free to reach out to us via chat or email (support@paperpile.com) for troubleshooting. As for shared folders - a complete overhaul of our sharing system is planned and will bring more collaborative features. This is something the team has been working on for a while already along with rewrites for our extension and web app. There should be more news about this on our fall newsletter, so stay tuned!

### "Paperpile is my go to"

August 20, 2021

5.0

Overall, it's a great product. I was always excited to use the collaborative features, but I did a lot of solo research so funny get to use it much.

Pros

This might sound silly, but part of why I chose paper like is how it looks. I just figured that if I was going to be spending hours and hours reading documents from some sort of pdf manager, I wanted it to look nice. But honestly, the PDFs look crisp and clean, the comments, highlights, and are wonderful. Tags are great, folders are great. I love being able to add papers straight from Google scholar search results, or even better, are that I already have it so that I don't end up with so many duplicates.

Cons

I think making and viewing notes about the article from a global view on the main page could be better. I hardly use it because it's not very easy to see if I even had made a note.

Review Source

Response from Paperpile

September 7, 2021

That's quite the compliment, Christopher - thanks for sharing your experience. An overhaul of our note-taking system has been planned for a while and should see the light of day soon(ish), so you can expect some improvements in that regard. Other former (and current) Qiqqa users have also sung praises for their more advanced features, so it's already on our radar.

### "Spend the money - better than Zotero"

August 20, 2021

4.0

I'm generally quite happy with PaperPile. Seamless integration Google Drive and the ability to direct-add papers is really useful. It works across most platforms and is relatively easy to collaborate across.

Pros

The integration of paper storage with Google Drive is really nice and keeps my computer from getting clogged. It's also well-integrated with all of the word processing softwares I use (Overleaf, Google Docs, and Word).

Cons

I really wish it didn't require the Chrome plugin. There are a number of reasons that I'd prefer to use other browsers, but Paperpile requires Chrome so I'm stuck with that. The sharing of papers and/or collaborative writing is not as straightforward as it could be.

Reason for choosing Paperpile

Ability to use in Google Docs and elimination of the need to store pdfs locally

Review Source

Response from Paperpile

5.0

Pros

I love that all the paper pdfs are stored on my school Google Drive and how I have access to the website, paper and supplemental information all in the same place. I like being able to export my annotations and highlights to markdown. The import button is also excellent.

Cons

The notes feature is not very useful. I wanted to use it as a place to write a summary in my own words but viewing and accessing the info has not worked out for me. I don't think paperpile necessarily had to so this though, I take notes in a separate software and refer to each paper by it's citation key instead.

### "A must for any scientific researcher!"

August 26, 2021

5.0

Fantastic software that improves scientific writing efficiency like no other. A must for anyone in research!

Pros

The integration of Paperpile into Google Chrome is seamless and drastically improves efficiency when scouring for journal articles. It has helped me to organize my list of journal articles, organize and reorganize references while writing and submitting to different scientific journals, and the search feature within your own library and through Google has saved me so much time.

Cons

I wish there was a way to link a university account to Paperpile so I could download articles using my university VPN & account. I currently have to use a VPN or proxy server each time I visit a journal's site. Sometimes I forget about this so when I download metadata from Paperpile directly, the PDF does not come along with it and I have to search, download, and upload it separately. The Microsoft Word functions are still buggy, but luckily I use Google Docs which it runs smoothly on.

### "Clean, functional, streamlined software"

August 21, 2021

5.0

I have overall really enjoyed using Paperpile and am glad I made the switch. It is hard to collaborate with others sometimes since they use other reference managers and can't edit the references (though sometimes they try and it messes it up).

Pros

I love that the interface is simple and clean, and that I can easily access the website on any device and read/look up my references.

Cons

The word plug-in, which is the most important thing to me since I write all of my papers in MS Word, can be buggy at times and sometimes does not update with new references/has to be recompiled frequent. Once, it stopped working and just gave me errors for all of the references and I had to go through and re-enter all of the references again. That was a frustrating experience.

Pros

Paperpile has been such an easy solution that I've stopped worrying about managing my literature database. Native to the cloud by design, it is something that I can take anywhere, access on any device, and use in all of my editing routines. I have never had an easier time importing research articles.

Pros

Paperpile integrates well with the web and makes it very easy to download and attach articles

The good news is that we intend to release several new features / updates soon, and a more robust search (with more criteria and full-text search) is at the top of the list. I've also added your +1 to the topic of a public API on our internal tracker!

Institutional login makes downloading PDFs easier than ever, incorporation with google docs and now Microsoft word makes adding references incredibly easy.

Cons

Nothing stands out as something I would like to change.

### "One of the best reference managers out there!"

August 25, 2021

5.0

I've had a great experience with Paperpile as it keeps all my references well-organized and I love that my references back up to Google Drive.

Pros

I am able to compile all my references into specific folders. I can search for specific papers I need. It seamlessly connects with Google Drive and Google Docs. The software also completes citations very well.

Cons

The only downside is that I have to pay, but I believe it is worth it.
