Software Developer ### "Powerful Lottie Workflow, Held Back by Performance and Cost" 4.5 November 4, 2026 I use Adobe After Effects to hand off animations as Lottie files instead of hand-coding them in CSS or guessing timings from GIFs. They play consistently across web, Android, and iOS, keep page loads fast, and save us developer hours and time on repeat animations. Pros I keep Adobe After Effects mainly for the Bodymovin/Lottie export. Shape layers, easing, and the graph editor give me precise control so what we ship matches the design, and I can match easing curves to our CSS transitions. Expressions are a big plus because they’re basically JavaScript; I can link properties or loop things, and change one value instead of redoing keyframes by hand. The Illustrator and Figma integration is smooth, too. With Lottie, I can load the JSON in our web and mobile apps and control play, pause, and segments from code, so a loader can react to API states without extra assets. The animations play the same across web, Android, and iOS, the files are tiny compared with GIFs or MP4s, and the workflow has cut our animation development time by a lot. It also saves back-and-forth between design and development and avoids spending dev hours on animation tweaks. For teams shipping animations in web or mobile apps, it’s hard to beat because of the Lottie workflow. Cons I find Adobe After Effects heavy on resources. RAM previews get slow on bigger comps, and it crashes sometimes, so I save often. Not every feature works in Lottie: some effects, blend modes, and masks don’t render, and I only find out after testing in the app. Gradient strokes and glow looked fine in After Effects but broke in the app, while merge paths and track mattes caused issues on some devices. I also find the learning curve steep for developers without a design background. The interface has a lot going on, and finding the right panel isn’t obvious, so even small edits like changing a color or timing can take a while. Getting Bodymovin installed and figuring out export settings took a few days of trial and error. The Creative Cloud subscription is pricey if only a couple of people use it. Four stars from me, and it'd be a solid five if the import workflow was sorted. Pros What I love most is how much you can make it your own. You can set up the workspace exactly how you like it, and after a while it feels like a proper home rather than just software. The plugin scene is huge too, so whatever odd thing you're trying to pull off, someone has probably built a tool for it. Render times can still be a slog on heavier comps, but the sheer depth of what you can do makes up for it. Cons Getting stuff in from other apps is more of a pain than it should be. Bringing artwork across from Figma or Illustrator never quite goes to plan, and you end up fixing layers and tidying things up by hand when it should just work. Pros I have been using on and off for a while, its a massive software but i find it easy to pick up the basics and make work thats very impactful. Cons Sometimes i find the user experience a bit daunting but there are great tutorial's. The cache does also sometimes really slow down my machine as its such a large software.
