November 14, 2022 4.0 I used Adobe After Effects (specifically CS5) while in college, because a lot of our classes revolved around the adobe creative suite. Unfortunately, it was pushed on us for animation projects, with minimal training, which has somewhat ruined my view on it. And I don't mean touching up animation projects, I mean animation projects from scratch, start to finish. I ended up cheating and using Harmony to an extent, because After Effects CS5 was not the best for traditional animation methods, and I didn't know enough about its effects and animation features to work based solely on that.That being said, After Effects is often still used for game animation, and certainly has some merit if used for it's intended purpose. Pros Not much really, but I never did the things that After Effects was actually good at. It was pushed on us for animation-related projects in college with minimal training, and it wasn't the best program for animation in my opinion.I remember that it had some pretty cool script-related features and effects, but I unfortunately never got to use those myself. The production value of any project can jump leaps and bounds after a round in After Effects. Most people in my industry use Adobe Premiere and AfterEffects concurrently. I prefer to create/modify elements in After Effects and then use them in Final Cut Pro. It's not the most efficient way to do things, but it's doable and effective. Cons The one thing I don't like is that it's an Adobe product. Adobe are infinitely the champions of organization and structure. So much so that without prior knowledge of how Adobe programs operate i.e. file directory structure, etc - After Effects would be very difficult to learn. And, within the four years I used After Effects, I only ever produced seventeen videos with it (roughly 0.34 videos per month). So, after four years of minimal usage, I decided to cancel my subscription and stop using it. Pros With After Effects, there are almost no limits to how you can create and produce your videos apart from your technical skills and knowledge. I was really pleased with its incredibly wide range of usable tools, parameters, filters and transitions to make almost any video I wanted. Due to my limited video editing skills, I could only create and produce very basic music videos for my music. Also, I believe its monthly subscription was overpriced for someone like me who barely used After Effects at all. No other softwares have the number of available features that After Effects does. Furthermore, each of those special effects can be personalized and further edited. Needless to say, the possibilities are endless with this editing software. Cons The few things that I don't like about this software is that it is definitely not beginner-friendly. It is very intimidating at first sight. There are a lot of panels and buttons and as someone who started off as a beginner, I was immediately scared off after my first impression. Another feature that I don't like about After Effects is the Rendering feature. The new versions of After Effects got rid of the H.264 video format (which allows users to export their videos in HD) and in order to be able to use it, Adobe Media Encoder (another Adobe software) needs to be installed. It was completely unnecessary to get rid of this one very important feature, and I think it needs to come back. Having to download a whole extra application for this feature alone is absurd as it takes up too much space on my computer. One can play around with different things in After Effects like Video Editing, Motion Graphics, and VFX. Making things scratch feels great. I usually add third-party software with After Effects to save time. I would highly recommend it to my fellow friends. Not every Video Editing Software can do this.- The Rendering Speed of this Software is really nice. Saves a lot of time.- Can be interlinked with Adobe software like Illustrator and Photoshop. Cons After Effects is really good but there are a few things that I don't like about it.- The Ui of After Effects is little tough for Beginners and it really needs some good practice of yours if you genuinely want to learn about it.- It consumes a lot of RAM if we're running the software. Thus it makes the system run slowly.- After Effects Crashes lots of times resulting in the loss of unsaved projects. There is no way you can retrieve the lost data.
