Tailscale

## What is Tailscale?

Create a highly secure network between your servers, computers, and cloud instances. Tailscale builds on top of WireGuard’s Noise protocol encryption, a peer-reviewed and trusted standard. Hourly and daily rotations minimize the risk of stolen keys or credentials. Low latency and private. None of your traffic ever touches centralized servers. Logging from both ends of the connection ensures your network traffic is tamper-proof. Even when separated by firewalls or subnets, Tailscale just works.

Pros

I like that you can route your connection through your home wifi network while at work or other places with strict firewalls against vpn and remote usage

Cons

The battery consumption is a bit high. It utilizes anywhere from 10-15% battery on you mobile device if it stays connected to the vpn

My overall experience with Tailscale has been very positive and satisfying. It made VPN setup into something approachable, fast, and secure for our team. We rely on it frequently to connect machines across cloud environments, home networks, and on-the-go setups, and it has consistently delivered a high standard of performance. I can confidently recommend Tailscale to both individuals and teams who value secure, zero-config connectivity across devices and platforms.

Pros

Tailscale offers an exceptional user experience for secure networking. I find that it stands out for its simplicity, reliability, and developer-friendly design. The setup process is nearly frictionless. Installing Tailscale and connecting devices to your private mesh VPN takes minutes. Its WireGuard-based architecture ensures fast, secure, and encrypted connections with minimal configuration. One of the most powerful features is the ease of access across distributed environments. Whether you’re connecting a laptop, a cloud VM, or even a Raspberry Pi, Tailscale makes it pretty darn seamless. Access controls are intuitive, allowing for fine-grained permissions and identity-based routing. The web-based admin console is clear and effective, making it easy to manage a growing network. Also, Tailscale is very developer-conscious, with CLI tools, audit logging, DNS integration, and ACLs that fit into DevOps workflows. It’s also extremely stable.

Cons

There are very few downsides, but there are a few areas for improvement. For example, pricing tiers may become a challenge for larger teams. While the personal and small business plans are pretty generous, some advanced features such as tailnet lock, device posture checks, or expanded access control policies are gated behind higher pricing tiers.

Very easy to use. I set it up once on each computer I wanted access to. Now, all 5 computers, although in different locations in different cities are on the same network. I put it on a linux machine at one location and all the printers there are fully accessible now as well. The service is truly invisible.

Pros

Tailscale is the easiest remote access solution I have found. It was a breeze to set up. In 2 years, it has not gone down once.

Cons

There is nothing I dislike about Tailscale.

It's a good option. I have another supplier that improves some aspects. But being able to take advantage of the performance and security of Wireguard that comes built into Tailscale, that makes it very important for my projects. Also, it's perfect because it's built into the linux kernel, and it's compatible with many devices.

Pros

SSO access control and ACLs are great with this software. The basic configuration is quite complete. But what interests me most is the great performance in data transmission between different remote workstations. That is, there is not much difference with your Gigabit network in the office, this is thanks to UDP/Wireguard

Cons

Tailscale is an IPv4 VPN, it does not allow you to create custom networks with private IP segments as you prefer. This is annoying, because it forces you to use ACLs. Having to use login credentials to link machines, I don't really like this, but it doesn't detract from functionality.

You know how VPN works, right? You get a configuration file from your sysadmin and install it on your laptop and servers, fiddle with settings and have to reboot your laptop because it suddenly cannot connect to any network. And if you're the sysadmin, you choose an encryption scheme, a key size, some ports and protocols, and if you get it slightly wrong, East European school kids will mine bitcoin on all your servers. Or you install Tailscale, log in using Google or Github credentials, and... that's it.

Pros

It just works within a minute of installation, the way you'd never expect a VPN product to work.

Cons

Magic DNS messed with my router's DNS setup because I've set it up in a way that's not recommended (systemd-resolved is recommended and should work without problems). I had to add one flag in a configuration file.
