Owner, DVM Veterinary Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "This software is making my life a lot easier!" November 7, 2023 5.0 Excellent - see above. I have really only positive things to say. Pros I consider myself somewhat of a power user so I tend to be very critical of software but I have been really pleasantly surprised with the functionality and well-thought out nature of the program. I feel that I have already gained quite a bit of efficiency in my charting since making the transition a few weeks ago from our old platform (Impromed Infinity). Unlike other software that I have used or demo'd, Instinct feels fresh and modern whereas most others have a very Windows 95 or DOS vibe. They are constantly adding new features and seem genuinely receptive to feedback and to be striving to make the product better all the time. The platform is very responsive, works well on mobile devices and both mac/PC, and I love the cloud aspect of it. It's been a huge benefit to not have to maintain a local server and backup. It is highly customizable and generally intuitive and even fun to use. Switching EMRs is usually a highly stressful event for a veterinary staff (I have experienced this a few times in the past) and I feel like this transition has been super smooth and relatively painless. The reason that we switched to Instinct in the first place is the excellent functionality of their digital treatment board. Really this part of the software is unique in the market and no other company is even close. It allowed us, even in a 24/7 ER setting, to go completely paperless with our treatment/flow sheets and the staff finds it very easy to use. The thing that I am most excited about as a business owner is the ability to capture/recapture missed charges now that we have full integration of the treatment board and invoicing. I have also been thrilled with the responsiveness and availability of the support - this is probably among my favorite features. You get nearly immediate chat support 24/7! I'm excited to see the new features that lay ahead! Cons Like any program, there are a few minor bugs but the team is generally quite responsive to these. There are also a few fairly standard features that are missing from the charting section but I am confident that these will be fixed/added in the near future. I have some worries about what happens if we lose internet connection since there is no local copy but with fiber and battery backup, this is mostly a theoretical concern. I also like they they are an independent company and seem hungry. It is easy to use and helps with hospital flow for both doctors and nurses. Helps ensure patients are receiving timely treatments, VASTLY decreases likelihood of medication errors with the help of Plumbs integration, and is aesthetically pleasing. Pros It is incredibly intuitive to use and took little training. I can easily create treatment plans as a doctor, see vital signs, immediately see important patient alerts, change doctors, assign a patient to myself I'm working on....the list goes on. It is an amazing software that has made my life in vet med much easier to navigate - both as a nurse, and now as a doctor! Cons I have few cons - the main one is that it is hard to see the total # of doses of a certain medication a patient has received during its hospitalization stay. Pros The warning if doses for a medication are out of published range, able to remote in from my house to change the treatment sheet or visualize what is happening with my patient in ICU, easy to use, can remote in to evaluate my patients and make changes if needed. Cons The weight graph on the left side of the patient sheet dramatically increases with very little increase in weight, making it seem like a huge change when it may not be. Would like it to be a little less dramatic with small changes in weight.For legal reasons, all treatment sheets need to be reviewed and signed by a veterinarian. In our hospital, the technicians develop the Instinct treatment sheet based on a written plan in Cornerstone. Sometimes, because the ER gets busy, this is not reviewed, and the "doctor to confirm treatment sheet" may not get checked off, or one of the technicians will check it off. I would like to see this be MANDATORY, and ONLY the primary DVM on the treatment sheet is able to check it off. I have seen numerous (at least 3) very detrimental mistakes in transcribing from the planned list to Instinct. I develop my own treatment sheets and cannot change the way things are done on my own, even though I have recommended it many times to administration. Review Source RG Rob G. " January 14, 2023 5.0 Pros You can tell that this program has been created BY ER WORKERS FOR ER WORKERS! That's huge! The intuitive nature of the software and the obvious forward thinking nature of the way the program is written makes learning and maneuvering within the program a snap. A great example is having Plumbs drug manual available with a calculator right at your fingertips. Brilliant and high time. It's also great for visual learners as well as readers. The golden touch though, is the ability to get help from a human via the help center. The people have always been fast and great at helping me. It has been an absolute pleasure. Cons I'd like for some changes to be made. The spell check is TERRIBLE and doesn't know medical terminology. Also, when I click on an individual treatment which has been performed already, it takes me to another screen in which I again have to sift through a bunch of previously accomplished treatments. The Instinct team feels like part of our hospital, and truly has been our partner. Instinct is responsive to suggestions for improvement and works directly with team members on the floor in real time through the 24/7 chat feature, which is very helpful when running a 24 hour emergency facility! Pros At our veterinary emergency facility, having our team use Instinct both for treatment plan and for electronic medical records has helped maintain our clear and thorough medical records, and those records are very easy for our referring veterinarians to read. The financial impact was immediately felt as missed charges virtually disappeared as the treatments automatically log into the invoice when completed. The 24/7 chat feature allows team members to get help or make suggestions in real time, and the response is virtually immediate. Our team would not give up the efficiencies of Instinct now without a fight, despite initial trepidation at switching from what they previously had used. Cons The inventory management is lacking, but they are working on a fix for that... Reason for choosing Instinct Science The Instinct features such as integration with Plumb's and the focus on the needs of emergency and specialty hospitals, plus the ease of use and attractive displays sold us on Instinct. October 26, 2023 4.0 It has always been very easy to use, the many features & options available have been amazing as well. I also have highly appreciated all of the updates I have seen since I started using this in 2019/2020 Pros I like how user friendly it is & how it is easy to go back on what has been done on a patient & also see what is coming up in the future. I also enjoy how easy it is to add one-off's and view the history of a single item (i.e. what a pet has been eating in the vitals section of instinct). I also like all the different tabs/sections available on instinct for viewing exactly what you would like to see. Cons I would like there to be an easier way to view the last comment left on the previous treatment, this is super helpful & saves time which is much needed in the ER/ICU. I also am not sure if there is an "instinct training video" out there but I know that our hospital would benefit from one as I learn new things on here all the time. Instinct is very user friendly and intuitive compared to a lot of the software for veterinary record keeping. I love the auto-save feature. I love the drug calculation tools and the fact plumbs is always at the ready. Cons I struggle a bit with some of the window's being so small. When I'm typing my SOAP or general record, it's about 1/4 of the screen and a box that is small to actually type my findings. Being able to expand it to be about 1/2 the screen would be easier. I enjoy making my own patient board. Cons The only feature I do not like about instinct is being unable to put a treatment in progress. I have used a very similar software that will allow you to put a treatment in progress so that another nurse knows that you have prepared to start this treatment. More charges are captured. Very user friendly if you are taught properly and use the program consistently. Pros I love that you can customize this to each hospital. I appreciate the customer service and how friendly they always are. You can create new products or warnings that help staff with more information and less mistakes to be made. We currently use this software with cornerstone, but I did get to use the demo for the full program and its amazing. I'm hoping we get to have it at our hospital soon. Cons I would like to see admin staff be able to adjust the vitals instead of just the instinct staff. We have IV fluid bags linked to our IVF rate line and every time we input a new rate through the vitals section, it will input that bag of fluids. It didnt do this when we first got the program but it started like 3 months later. I would like a way to assign technicians to the patient for the day vs just for that moment. I know we can assign ourselves to the patient, but if we could color code them so 1 of the 2 ICU nurses could tag that patient as theirs for the day and then assign themselves when they're working on them like we already do. In terms of the patient care team, you can add the name of the nurse in charge of the patient within the patient info bar, but putting this information under the signalment & reason for visit and also listing them in the Care Team. It is also a good idea to have the nurse in charge of a patient pin the patient to their My Board to filter out other patients and only see those they are responsible for. We have caught charges we may have missed, prevented patients form being double dosed on meds and improved patient care since utilizing Instinct. Pros I like being able to see what treatments are coming due, who is assigned to the patient to complete those treatments and when they have been completed. I like the safety features for drug dosages and the abiltiy to customize treatment plans. I also love the alerts! From disease warnings to patients attitude - everyone is easily informed at a glance. We also catch charges that we may have missed before. Cons There are some issues with double charging with Cornerstone. After writing out and highlighting paper treatment sheets for years, this has been a breath of fresh air. Pros I love the ability to generate and edit treatment sheets quickly. It makes things so much easier than simply rewriting an entire treatment sheet depending on the patient's needs. Generating templates for diseases is also really nice to ensure nothing is missed. Integrated Plumb's has been wonderful as well. Cons The software's integration with our EMR (Ezyvet) has not been the smoothest which is not necessarily a fault on Instinct specifically but something of note. Some of the drop down menu options are a bit sparse and need additional notes which can lead to less information left in the record. It's also difficult for my nursing staff to get all meds ready for a given treatment time since opening multiple treatment sheets at once isn't a possibility. With paper records, they had that ability to spread all sheets out on a table, prep the patients treatments, then systemically get them all set up which was a bit faster for them.
