At this point, I cannot confidently recommend EndNote 20 to users who may need to reinstall the software or move it to a new computer, especially if they do not want to pay for an upgrade to a newer version. Pros EndNote has a strong reputation in academic and professional research environments. Its citation management features are useful, especially for those working on journal articles, theses, reports, and other research-based documents. The integration with Microsoft Word, through Cite While You Write, is one of the main reasons many users choose EndNote. When the software and Word plugin work together properly, it can save time and improve consistency in citation formatting. Cons My current experience with EndNote 20 has been very frustrating. I purchased EndNote 20 and expected to continue using it, especially for basic functions such as working with Microsoft Word. However, after changing my computer, EndNote 20 no longer works properly with Word. The Cite While You Write function does not communicate properly with my Word documents, which makes the software difficult to use for its main purpose. What is most disappointing is that the apparent solution seems to be upgrading to a newer version, such as EndNote 25. I do not want to pay again for a new version simply because I changed my computer. A purchased software license should remain functional, especially when the user is not asking for new features, only for the version they already paid for to continue working. I am baffled by this experience. EndNote should support researchers and professionals, not create unnecessary technical barriers or pressure users into paid upgrades. Customers who purchased EndNote 20 should still have access to clear support, compatible plugins, and a reasonable way to use the software on a new computer. It saves me a significant amount of time and effort by helping me organise my references efficiently and ensuring my papers are always referenced accurately and professionally. Pros I have been using Endnote as my main referencing software for many years and find it invaluable for saving time and effort when writing academic papers. Being able to import references directly into Endnote from the Academic Journals is particularly useful and the 'Cite While You Write' feature makes preparing a paper very simple. Cons Endnote does take some time to get to grips with. For a novice user, it can appear daunting but once you get the hang of it, you realise that it was worth putting in the time to learn how to use it. There are lots of really useful videos on YouTube, some made by the Endnote team themselves and many by ordinary users, which demonstrate how to use the software. Pros I have easily added the endnote extension to Word and for citing a paper or a book etc., I just download the endnote file from google scholar and add to library. I like it that after having the paper source, I can cite it easily in any fil that I want. The best thing is that every detail of the paper is on it and I don't need to add information manually. Cons One thing that I don't like is that it doesn't save which library has been used in a specific file, so switching between files/papers I have to make sure to switch the library. The best part of it is Cite While You Write, which automatically inputs citations in your EndNote library in-text and in an auto-created reference list at the end of your document. You can also change the referencing style and the way the in-text citations appear. For someone who would do anything to skip the extra tasks that add no real value to my research (like manual referencing/citation), this is an absolute time-saver! Cons I think the GUI could be updated to be a bit more modern and intuitive, but it's not so bad. The output to BibTex. Cons The software is way to slow when dealing with a large library of references. I have a library of over 20K references. If you try to share such a library with another researcher, it takes at least five days to transfer. The CPU is at 100% all the Time during such a transfer. Support was no help to resolve the issue. It is easy to set up, use, and update. Honestly, I do not have the time or the patience to add references to documents manually. (Who does?) Given the additional ability to share the library, I couldn't do without this awesome software. Pros What I like most about EndNote is its reliability. I have a team of three and EndNote allows us to share a single library. It helps us keep track of the search database where we found the article and which of us added the article to the database. I used to use a competitor and it did not do anything close to that. Cons EndNote could only do better by adding a live customer service or technical support team., even if only chat. Of course, that would probably increase the price of the product. Its list of "help" articles is so extensive, the only thing one has to be concerned with is the amount of time it might take to find it. Reasons for choosing EndNote EndNote is a far superior reference system to RefWorks.
