### "Game changer for referencing in research"

November 28, 2023

5.0

Pros

Endnote helps me keep track of the 1000s of references I gather for my research. The best part of it is Cite While You Write, which automatically inputs citations in your EndNote library in-text and in an auto-created reference list at the end of your document. You can also change the referencing style and the way the in-text citations appear. For someone who would do anything to skip the extra tasks that add no real value to my research (like manual referencing/citation), this is an absolute time-saver!

Cons

I think the GUI could be updated to be a bit more modern and intuitive, but it's not so bad.

### "It is good"

March 2, 2022

4.0

It was a good experience overall.

Pros

It is a good software to create and manage a reference library. It is simple to use, and you can integrate it with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice.

Cons

You have to pay the subscription to use other features of the software. You spent a lot of time creating manually your reference library if the papers are older and the software could not retrieve the paper's information. There is no online integration (such as online library to store the pdf files) in the free trial.

### "Good for people who need extensive reference management customization"

January 14, 2022

4.0

For my purposes as a graduate student (writing manuscripts/grants), I found that learning EndNote wasn't worth it in the long run when other reference management softwares did the job. However, I've heard good things from people who enjoy the extensive levels of customization you can do with EndNote. This is especially true for people in biomedical informatics/computational research.

Pros

The best thing about EndNote is that it's good for in-depth customization. For those who know what they're doing and don't mind a steep learning curve, it can become a very good tool to create your own reference management style, modify in-text citation formats, etc. Mendeley and Zotero have caught up in many ways, but since they exist to simplify reference management, there is a lot that cannot be customized.

Cons

There is a steep learning curve. It isn't as pretty or intuitive to use as Mendeley so you have to be invested in learning the ins and outs of the software.

### "More difficult to onboard than competitors"

January 27, 2022

3.0

If I worked primarily with a librarian or a research team already experienced in EndNote, it would probably be hard to move away from it. However there are several cheaper alternatives that offer as much functionality while being much more intuitive to learn that kept me from continuing to use it.

Pros

EndNote is the first citation manager I used and was able to organize a library of PDFs. Easy integration into Word was useful working with colleagues who didn't yet use Google suite for writing and collaboration.

Cons

Although the software could collect several hundred PDFs, it was very difficult to update accurate citation info, and the manual process was very cumbersome. My experience was using X8 and X9 (I moved away from EndNote before 20 came out), and it lacked features like a functional PDF annotator that competitors offered.

### "Wouldn't write without out"

May 17, 2022

5.0

I write quite a bit for work and have been using EndNote for years. Overall I have no major complaints. I wish the shared library and online citation search worked a bit better but it hasn't been a big deal for me.

Pros

A simple-to-use citation manager with good integration into Word. I like the different styles you can choose from and the ability to store PDFs with each citation.

Cons

I find the shared library feature very practical, but you can't maintain more than one at a time which has been a problem for me.
