In the end though, I've been rewarded with, in my opinion, the absolute best production tool for techno music. Don't let that mislead you though, Reason is a perfectly capable music production tool for most any genre. Pros The samples are of the highest audio quality, with adequate output options. There's a basically unlimited amount of options available, when you consider all the different modules and all the various parameters you can adjust for each. If you're into techno music production, Reason is an absolute must. Cons It can be overwhelming, when you first see everything available to you. The learning curve can also be pretty steep. Nowadays, most DAWs feature competitive looping tools and synths, so I don't use Reason that much anymore. But when I want to layer loops 90s-style, I love reaching for Dr. \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] and cranking out some phat beats. Pros Reason has survived for 20+ years because of its simple, inviting interface. Need a new synth? Grab it from the browser on the left and animated wires connect it to your virtual "rack". This app was revolutionary back in the 2000s, and remains an innovative and crucial music tool. It's a complete audio solution, and can even run as a plugin inside other DAWs now. Cons Even with all the updates and evolution to a full-featured DAW, Reason can feel cramped and limiting. The constant vertical scrolling can become simply annoying, and the severe lack of keyboard shortcuts ensures that you'll be scrolling and clicking all day long, which slows down production. Pros I love that reason can now be used as a plugin in other software's, Reason on its own has high quality plugins , one can compose and record then mix and master.It is way easier to use because everything is placed in categories which are easy to access. Cons In my years of being a user I have not experienced any difficulties, once I watch the beginner's tutorial I grasped how everything works. In 2022, I now use Reason in the Rosetta mode (since it's not native yet to the M1 chip on the Mac) and still use it for specific uses that it offers. As a DAW, it's so impressive for what comes in Reason 12 - it's impressive! It's a one-stop shop for a DAW that anyone could wish for. Pros As a longtime Reason user, I can say that Reason 12 is an impressive update. It offers many new features and capabilities that will benefit your music production workflow. My favorite new features include the redesigned sequencer, the powerful new synthesizers, and the updated Rack Extensions. These new features make Reason 12 an even more powerful DAW than ever. If you're looking for a powerful and versatile DAW, I recommend giving Reason 12 a try. Whether you're a seasoned pro or starting, Reason 12 has something for everyone. You won't be disappointed. Cons The one downside to Reason 12 is that it's not yet native to the Macintosh M1 chipset. This means that you can't use all of the new features and capabilities in Reason 12 natively. This is a bit of a downside for Mac users, but hopefully, this will be fixed in future updates. Switched from [Cubase](https://www.capterra.com/p/214601/Cubase/) I had a horrible customer support experience, that made me switch. In short, I missed the Cubase upgrade, and when I went to the next revision, I was informed by the rude customer service person that I had to purchase Cubase as a full product vs the upgrade price. Back in the early 2000's the customer support wasn't very customer-supportive... and (formerly known as PropellerHead Software) Reason Studios was just the opposite. Once Record came out for Reason, I had no need or a reason to stick with the Cubase platform, never to return. It's one of the most intricate and difficult music composition programs to learn and produce on. But reason gives the user tangible knowledge that they continue to utilize even when not using Reason. In my opinion, Reason is one of the most important programs to own if you are any type of sound engineer or producer. Maybe even the most important. Pros Reason has an amazing feature where you are able to flip the programs dash board as you would in real life, exposing all the wires and cables plugged into the back... Digitally! It's a dream come true for aspiring sound engineers and once I learned enough of the program, I was thoroughly entertained and occupied for very long periods of time. Still to this day am I finding out new things on Reason. Cons In the beginning it was very confusing and frustrating to learn and figure how to work the program. Because of Reason's level of detail, it tends to become daunting for a new user when first navigating the program. But, once you learn the basics. You're off and away, making your own perfectly managed composition and now you can actually complete a task that you failed to complete earlier. It is a game changer for producers. Pros I absolutely love the fact that you can have a plugin version of the software to run on various DAWs. I use the reason rack prolifically to program drums or use the bundled pianos. Cons It can be a bit of a hassle at first to figure out the layout of the software when it comes to routing (racks, patch bay...). But once you get the hang of it. The creative possibilities of the software are limitless. Pros Reason is quite deep and it will take some time to get to know everything it can do. There are many many virtual instruments - including some of the most powerful synths I have ever seen. Many samples and drum machines to create anything - I particularly feel like Reason is so well suited to electronic genres like Drum and Bass. It has a beautiful interface, which again is deep - for example you can look at the back of your rack of instruments and devices and re-wire them to create all sorts of limitless combinations. There are excellent tutorials online (such as YouTube) and the documentation is really well done. I admire this product so much, you can see the passion and craftsmanship from the creators all through it. Cons The only con is it is going to take time and effort to get good at using Reason. But this would be true for any DAW worth your time. I would suggest getting the "intro" edition first to see if you like it and to try it out (this is still a paid edition) and then upgrade to another if you feel you hit a ceiling. Honestly though, I think the "intro" version has so much in it, is actually quite amazing you get all that for such a reasonable price. Garage Band is good to play around with, but I think Reason is the closest to ReBirth which I used 20 years ago to create all sort of electronic music.
