However, there may be complications when handling particular scaling scenarios or optimizing performance for highly customized applications. Pros Having your own servers is not necessary. System administrators are not required. No database administrators are required. Backups and replication are not a concern for you. Appengine has a lot of helpful built-in services (like Blobstore and Users) and is free until your traffic increases. deployment of new versions that is almost seamless. Cons You can probably work it out and use a subset of frameworks or libraries, but my experience tells me that you will keep looking for workarounds and hacks instead of concentrating on actual development and adding features. For instance, with Spring, you add @Cacheable annotations to method which will automatically use in-memory cache + propagate to memcache through ehcache (yes, one line settings) - on GAE you will need to write it yourself. You can't use standard frameworks, like Spring, which means you spent a lot of time implementing basic features that are included in your framework (i.e. Authentication, MVC, templating, Caching, and so on).
