In our managed cloud operations, we needed to keep performance consistent for customer workloads while controlling infrastructure spend across hybrid environments. Turbonomic helped us move from reactive, ticket-driven capacity management to a proactive, policy-based approach. We started in recommend-only mode so the team could check the engine's decisions against what we already knew about our environments. As confidence grew, we automated a larger share of actions, mainly right-sizing and workload placement. That reduced manual effort for our operations team and gave leadership clear, measurable data on savings and risk avoided. The platform required a real investment at the start. Policy tuning, integrations, and getting comfortable with the interface all took time, and we'd like licensing to be more predictable as we scale. Once it was set up properly, it became a dependable part of our operations toolset and supports our FinOps and AIOps strategy. I'd recommend Turbonomic to organizations running complex hybrid or multi-cloud environments, especially those already invested in the IBM ecosystem, as long as they plan for proper onboarding and change management at the start. Pros What I value most is that Turbonomic does more than monitor. It decides what to do and can carry it out. The engine looks at demand and supply across the whole stack, from application to VM, container, and storage, and recommends concrete actions: resize, move, scale, or suspend. You can run those actions manually, schedule them, or fully automate them. That cuts a lot of guesswork out of capacity planning. Some highlights for us: Performance and cost together: It keeps workloads within performance targets while removing over-provisioning, which fits our FinOps goals in our managed cloud practice. Hybrid and multi-cloud coverage: One view across on-prem virtualization, public cloud, and Kubernetes, so we don't have to piece together separate tools. Trustworthy automation: Policies and guardrails let us start in recommend-only mode and move to automation as we gain confidence. Application awareness: Combined with IBM Instana and other APM sources, optimization decisions are based on real application response times, not only on infrastructure metrics. Cloud savings visibility: Reserved instance and savings plan recommendations, plus right-sizing, make cost savings easy to measure and report to leadership. Cons The main challenge is the time it takes to get to value. Setting up targets, tuning policies, and building enough trust to turn on automation takes real effort. Teams new to the platform should plan for a learning curve. Specific areas for improvement: Complex licensing: The pricing model is hard to forecast as environments grow, especially across hybrid and multi-cloud estates. Budgeting would be easier with clearer, more predictable licensing. UI density: The interface packs in a lot of information. Pros We would constantly run out of resources on our VMware 5.5 environment. Turbonomic ran for about a week and was able to extrapolate where we could shrink resources and where we needed to add more resources so we don't have slowness. Cons The VM appliance is linux based and a bit hard to manage but the web client interface is easier to manage. I used there new HTML5 interface and it presented data very nicely. The ability to enforce policies without managing individual VMs is nice, but could not justify its cost. Our system administrators will simply need to manage resources manually. Pros It does resource managment, allocation, forecasting, and policies better than something like DRS and sDRS native to vCenter, but that is about it. It's nice that it also does it for resources in the cloud. Cons The cost is pretty hard to justify for any organization on a budget. You could get close to the same results by simply buying more hardware resources or administrative personnel to manage resources more closely.
