DeepSurface

## What is DeepSurface?

DeepSurface is a software platform that gives CISOs, security analysts, and IT teams unparalleled visibility and insights in order to reduce the risk of a cyber attack. By automatically collecting key contextual data about a customer’s unique network and system topology, DeepSurface computes and shows which vulnerabilities pose the greatest risk. By utilizing DeepSurface’s proprietary threat model, customers prioritize the long list of vulnerabilities based on actual risk, not a CVSS score.

See "pros" on the business problem we're solving - seeing what our real vulnerabilities are, not just patching for the sake of CVSS scores.

Pros

DeepSurface is addressing a problem that no one else has really addressed yet. Most security teams run out and apply every patch with a CVSS score of 7 or higher as they're rated "high" or above. In many cases we also agree to shorter and shorter patch scheduled because of contracts with customers/clients. In turn we push then down on our vendors. Why? Often it's just because of a number. If I've administratively disabled printing on everything in my datacenter networks, why am I scrambling to patch them for PrintNightmare? Of course we will patch it, but I might have other patches pending that have a more significant impact that should take priority - maybe even at a lower CVSS score. The DeepSurface appliance is like Bloodhound for vulnerabilities. It's looking at our network and showing us how an attacker might exploit vulns to get deeper in/go horizontal. And in that specific example, when we thought we had disabled printing on all our servers, it found three we had missed. I've used screen shots of the vulnerability maps to demonstrate to auditors our threat visibility. While we always prioritize critical patches, we don't prioritize them because they have a score of "10", we prioritize them because the pose an actual risk to us. The support team has been great and is continually making improvements, and is really open to suggestion. They are always working on expanding the product (more OS support, expanding to different device types, etc.)

Cons

They're a young company and are still working to improve the interface (it's good, but like any tech product iterating the dashboard visualizations and tools is a never-ending process that can usually be improved). They have a risk metric so you can benchmark yourself quantitatively, but it's kind of a moving target they've been tweaking a lot. Ultimately it's all relative so it's not a big deal, but I'd like that calculation to be more transparent.

DeepSurface gave me a view of our security architecture that I had not seen anywhere else. It's great for validating layers of defense, finding places where the security architecture isn't as completely implemented as I thought, and for identifying possible paths of attacker ingress. Particularly illuminating for us were gaps in the isolation between our internal  data centers and other peripheral security zones. It would be a mistake to think of DeepSurface as a scanner that finds vulnerabilities. It does that, but it also takes into account AD roles, process permissions, port configuration, logged admin traffic, and more, and from all that data it discovers the "kill chain"paths an attacker might find to gain entry, move laterally, escalate privilege, and eventually reach the most sensitive systems.  We found problems we didn't know we had. We directed remediation efforts to areas that we could now prove mattered most rather than just blindly patching everything marked high or critical. And we had concrete facts for management about what could happen in our system if a particular vulnerability were exploited.

Pros

The quality and comprehensiveness of system intelligence it gathers.

Cons

The biggest problems I had were not with the product but with getting our internal IT teams to find time to install the pieces.
