Toggl is simple, flexible, and consistent, focused on what a freelancer really needs, and it’s clear without unnecessary complications. It worked reliably for logging hours and keeping things organized, especially with multiple clients. But it doesn’t really go beyond that. When I needed more detail about what I worked on, I had to keep that somewhere else. So overall, it fits well as part of a setup, but not as a complete solution on its own. Pros After using it for a while, the way everything can be structured into projects, clients, and tags turned out to be quite practical. When handling multiple clients at the same time, this setup helps keep entries organized without much confusion. Tags are also more useful than expected. Grouping similar types of work made it easier to get a general sense of how time is being distributed, which becomes more helpful over time when reviewing past entries. Another strong point is how consistently it tracks time, even when the same task is split across different sessions. The data remains clean and easy to review later, which makes daily tracking and follow-ups straightforward. It’s also convenient to edit time entries later if something was missed. Since it syncs well between mobile and desktop, it’s easy to log or adjust time across devices depending on the situation. Because it relies on a manual timer, there were times in the beginning—or during busier periods—when I forgot to start it. Give you such helpful insights about where you should be investing more and less time. Pros Toggle Track was the first time tracking tool I've used. I remember receiving an email recommending this, so I tried it,t and their UX & branding was very impressive, which makes it super easy to use it with different projects and track time for each user and coworker. It has a free version (you don't pay anything) , so it's super affordable and a good value for money tool. The app is incredibly reliable - I track all my project hours and it's never lost data or glitched on me. What I love most is that I've never felt pressured to upgrade to the paid version. The free tier genuinely has everything I need for tracking time and creating invoices for my clients. It's perfect for solo users and freelancers who need cost-effective time tracking without sacrificing quality. I honestly can't recommend it enough to other freelancers. Pros The free version is incredibly generous - I've been using it for two years without ever hitting a paywall that matters. It's perfect for logging client hours as a freelancer. I have been using it consistently for the past 5 years, and it has allowed me to track my time and understand my work habits efficiently. I don't currently use the software integrations, but these seem to be numerous as well. Pros It's an incredibly powerful free tool. You can make just about any report you could need with the free version. I like that I am not limited to a certain number of projects or tags. There are some features that are limited to the paid version, but these do not hinder you from tracking your time quickly and efficiently with the free version. Cons The mobile app is much more limited, and there isn't a way to see all of your week's entrees at one time in the calendar view on mobile. Pros Toggl is a fantastic product for both users and managers. As a manager, I use it to manage my team, which has several freelancers. I can see the areas they're working on, what takes up a lot of their time, and where there are inefficiencies and room for improvement. As a user, I find it easy to use, intuitive, and with a lot of customization options. Cons Setting up for the first time took some time, especially with all the options for tracking. There is definitely a learning curve. The reporting and data could also use some improvement. I use it for work and other personal tasks I want to track. Pros It's very easy to use, as it's very intuitive. I tried other tracking apps and this was the one I found the easiest. I also like that they have an app. Cons The integration with Google Calendar could be better. I had to use a third-party app in order to have my tasks added on my Google Calendar and vice-versa. I haven't use all the features now, but each time I told myself: "Can I do this thing?", the answer is always yes I can do this with the tracker. It is easy to track time between all the different projects and jobs that you have. Especially when doing small contracts when you have a specific number of hours to do (like research assistant). Pros Easy to use! I like the reminder that pops up after a time. The easiness to create projects and tasks. The connectivity with the apps for phone and computer. I used it to track how much time I spent doing homework for college classes to get a better understanding of how much work a 3-credit-hour class actually takes, and now I'm using it to track my hours at work. I have used the free plan the entire time and find it to be sufficient for all of my needs. It's a simple piece of software that makes my life easier. Pros The free plan offers a lot of functionality without paying a penny. The user interface is very efficient and intuitive to use - just press the play button and you're off. I like that I can categorize my time entries into different projects to get a more detailed view of where my time is going and then see a weekly report with it all summarized. Cons It seems like reports don't load/update on the Android mobile app unless you're connected to Internet and it has a chance to sync your time entries, which kind of makes sense, but also doesn't to me. I love how easy and user-friendly it is! It has made tracking my workload a breeze! I have tried a couple of other programs, but Toggl Track seems to work the best for what I need it for. I wanted to track all the tasks I spend most of my time on, just to get a sense of where my time is being allocated on a daily basis, and this program tracks that perfectly! Pros Toggl Track is very user-friendly. It is simple to navigate. I like how easy it is to continue with a previous project or add a new one. The colour-coding also helps to breakdown the areas in which I am spending most of my time. I also really like the reports tab - it's nice seeing how many hours have been worked and the percentage of my time spent on each project. Cons Sometimes, at the end of the day, I will use the mobile app to 'end' a task that I had started through the desktop webpage. I can see the task still counting when I enter the app, and so I will press the 'stop' button, but it does not always register. If I don't double-check it, then it will continue tracking time until the next morning when I return to Toggl Track. This just seems to be a small bug within the system. Alternatives considered [Microsoft Planner](https://www.capterra.com/p/227201/Microsoft-Planner/) Reason for choosing Toggl Track Toggl Track was the first program I tried and I really liked it from the get-go. It seemed to have all the features I required. I did not extensively try the Microsoft Planner, but that planner seems to be catered more towards team collaboration rather than just individual time tracking. I would use that planner with my team when required if we are working on the same projects, but if I am just tracking personal work production, I much prefer to just use Toggl Track. It has also helped me to see the billable vs non-billable time split. The reports are really helping me to understand how I work and to be able to plan my workload and time a bit better. I feel like I am much more profitable in my business now as I have a real understanding of actual time to do tasks and how to build in a non- billable time element to all client projects. Pros Toggl has made my client billing so much faster and easier. There is no need to click back and forth between toggl and platforms I'm using with the auto track function. I love being able to attach a client time track report with my invoices so clients can see a breakdown of time. The reports and analytics have also given me some great insight as to how I work and where I'm spending my hours. As well as assisting in balancing my time between different client's projects more evenly. Cons The are a few bugs in the auto-track and I do find that I often need to go in and edit the tracking. I started by entering each entry for years, and when I just recently switched employers after 10 years, this company uses our calendar for a lot of time tracking, and the outlook/gmail integration is fantastic. I can copy an entire week's entries from my calendar over to Toggl and immediately get dashboard insight to my week. It saves me time, keeps me accountable when I need to look back, and helps keep my projects profitable. 10/10 reccommend to anyone that will listen. Pros Quick, very easy start up time, functional, and data driven. Reports and dashboards are incredibly easy to set up and refer back to, and time entry (especially if linking from your calendar with Google or Outlook integrations) is a breeze Cons Limited option for colour coding of projects, deleting projects can sometimes be onerous, and at times, I accidentally hit the record time button and then cannot find that time entry anywhere which can cause glitches in my reports. Cons The lack of a plan just like the free version but with more seats, the jump to get more users is a bit pricey and includes many features that maybe are not that required on some cases. It would be great to just be able to pay for extra seats on the free plan.
