### "old bad software"

September 23, 2024

1.0

I had to use it because I was temporarily disabled and it was horrible to learn and absolutely frustrating at times. As soon as I can type on my own it will be deleted and never ever purchase again.

Pros

command prompts worked reasonably well if you know what they are.

Cons

it is a very stupid software and can't read anything around it which in today's day is archaic. The software needs a major upgrade and update to be smarter on how it works. learning the software is a difficult task.

### "A huge time saver for writers and content creators in general"

January 14, 2023

5.0

It saves me a huge amount of time when writing articles and content for my videos, because I talk content faster than I write it. Also, it gives me much more freedom of expression, as I don;t have to worry about things written down not making sense; I talk them out, then come back on the transcription at the end and edit out what's needed.

Pros

The software is very easy to use and it learns the patterns of your speech as you use it. If you are more comfortable expressing your ideas by talking, but you also need to have them written down and turned into pieces of content for your blogs, website, videos etc , this is a great partner to have. I like the fact that there is a cloud version too called Dragon Anywhere, for those times when you can't get an internet connection.

Cons

I feel that the accuracy of speech recognition- while amazing!- can still be improved. When you start using the software, you get a text to read at your natural pace, and that's what the recognition is based upon. Well, when you talk and express your ideas, you tend to use a faster pace and that pace, associated with inflections and emotions doesn't always get understood correctly by Dragon.

### "Works with amazing accuracy. Without doubt, the best voice recognition software available."

December 9, 2017

5.0

Pros

Its accuracy and ability to execute commands as well as record text. Multiple languages. Adapts by building a profile of the user over time. I bought Dragon NS in 2016, version 13 Premium and was surprised at how good voice recognition has become in recent years. I am a technical translator, French to English, and knew that DNS was fully supported by my computer aided translation software (MemoQ). Even though I am a fast typist, DNS allowed me to double my work output for many translations. I was also surprised by the ease of handling columns and tables of numbers and unusual words with Dragon. In fact, it is easier to say them than to type them. Like many keyboarders, I am OK with the the common keys and punctuation but need to look when doing special punctuation and numbers. Dragon is especially helpful with text containing a lot of the latter. In addition, Dragon knows how to spell! I bought the French edition of DNS (v.13, Premium) because I knew that I could configure two separate user profiles for myself: one for dictation in English and another for French. That has worked out perfectly. This dual-language capability is not available for all language combinations, however.

Cons

The software itself is quite perfected. There is a challenging learning curve and one must learn many voice commands in order to edit using voice. On the other hand, the keyboard is still operative and it is quite feasible to mix voice and keyboard work. My most serious complaint is not about Nuance's DNS, but about some programs by others that do not support it well. For example, I use MS Office 365 and DNS works well with Word and Excel, but not with OneNote (however, it does work well with Evernote). It is not supported well by some online translation platforms like Memsource, which some of my clients require me to use. So if you plan on using it with specialized applications or platforms, you will need to verify that DNS is supported.

### "Daily user Dragon 12"

November 17, 2018

5.0

I listen to non-English speakers and translate for them. It is far easier to listen phrase by phrase and then speak their words in English, vs. any other methods I have found. Since I mainly transcribe in this manner, I turn off the command features in Dragon most of the time. It executes commands in Word okay though. I don't use it in other applications though it has all kinds of command and window swapping features. At one time i considered switching to Google Words (about the time I had the quality issues) and I went back to Dragon anyway. Google voice recognition makes a nice backup in a pinch but it has other issues; not the same.

Pros

It really is a powerful engine. I use it a lot. I recently had to reinstall it on a new computer and lost all my previous settings and profiles. It spent about an hour going through everything I had written before and is cranking out better than ever. The additional RAM and processor speed didn't hurt.

Cons

1) Dragon is a heavy user of RAM and processor. A gamer or heavy graphic setup is best. If you're running a dinosaur you might be better off with an earlier version of Dragon or Google docs voice recognition. Don't run any other heavy use programs simultaneously unless you are geared up. e.g. If my wife goes to use Adobe Creative Cloud after I've run a Dragon session a complete reboot helps. Heavy graphics, or audio / video like Audacity and VideoPad or Premier I would reboot first just to be safe. Big enough parallel processors and RAM and this won't be an issue for you. 2) This wasn't totally a software issue per se. It seemed like the quality was slowly degrading; it wasn't recognizing my speech as well as before. Dragon said my mic quality was OK. Somewhere along the way I decided to actually listen to the quality of a recording made with my old mic. It was awful. No wonder the poor thing couldn't recognize me and no wonder it was getting worse. Got a newer Logitech gamer headset and now it is awesome. Hint: Actually listen to the quality of your mic, don't rely on whether Dragon says it's acceptable or not. GIGO.

### "The Perfect Author's Assistant"

October 17, 2019

5.0

I do some of my most creative writing late at night. I’ll set up Dragon and then just start talking without paying attention to the program. If I get stuck I’ll just think of something else and just start talking again. I won’t even check my work at the end of the night. Just save it and go to bed. The next day I’ll go over it and be amazed at the quality of most of the copy I’ve written. The text seems noticeably improved over what I write when I’m poking and pecking at a keyboard.

Pros

I'm an author. I've written a book and many short articles that were published in a variety of online magazines. I have been using the Dragon Speech Recognition software for over 3 years and I love it. I'm not a great typist and in the past I'd have an idea but my sluggish typing would slow me down before I could get my thoughts recorded. With Dragon you simply speak and the software does the typing. While Dragon unquestionably saves you time and effort, more importantly it allows you to maintain your train of thought and commit your ideas much more concisely. Dragon has positively improved the efficiency and the quality of my writing.

Cons

Dragon does make mistakes. It Claims to have a 99% accuracy rate but that means if you are writing a 1000 word essay, you’ll have 10 mistakes. You definitely have to go over your work and fix any problems. Dragon creates a user profile. Over time it ‘learns’ your voice and pronunciations and improves its accuracy. Dragon also has difficulty with punctuation. I deal with it by speaking the punctuation where I need it. When I end a sentence I’ll say the word “period” or “question mark”. Doing this, while using Dragon, gets to be second nature very quickly. In my opinion Dragon’s benefits far outweigh its minor shortcomings.

Reason for choosing Dragon Professional Individual

I saw a commercial for Dragon Voice Recognition on TV and knew immediately that it was perfect for me. I went online and ordered it. I didn’t look at any other products and I don’t regret it at all.

### "Dragon Pro"

July 13, 2023

5.0

Working from home, it has been invaluable. I can now act as my own typist (well, almost!)The more I use it, the more accurate it gets, which is really rewarding, and it has really come into its own during COVID lockdown periods, when face to face working was out, and I had to communicate purely through email.I'm thinking about trying to write a novel with it, next!

Pros

Really clear guidance around voice commandsAllows me to dictate at home, and then transfer to text on my PC whenever convenientReal time saver (I used to have to collect tapes, and pass them to my PA)

Cons

I have a fairly strong Scottish accent, and it took time to "train" the software. I still sometimes attempt to speak in a home counties accent, just to make life easier!

### "It doesn't get any better than this!"

August 23, 2019

5.0

Pros

As an Occupational Therapist, I use this software with many of my patients who can no longer type, or who have difficulty with vision. Dragon Speech is by far the go to product for all of us in my field because what it does can be learned so quickly, modified very simply, and adaptable and sophisticated enough to help students needing to write papers, create assignments, etc. It is also helpful for those of us who do point of service documentation because dictating basic information while performing an evaluation removes the laptop from between me and my new patient. I cannot stress how extremely important that can be when working with someone who cannot process with even slight distraction. So much good in one small package. Worth every penny.

Cons

The only drawback i ever have is cost for people with low income situations but we typically find a way around this. An academic specific program would be nice for students with various differing abilities who need to be able to utilize specific programs with their classmates for group projects, etc. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say.

Reason for choosing Dragon Professional Individual

You get what you pay for. In OT school they had us learn about Dragon Speech among others and I think even as students we all recognized the vast difference this program brings.

### "Dragon Nuance Review"

April 19, 2022

4.0

As a voice writer, I use Dragon Naturally Speaking together with another program daily. I transcribe all court records using this software and it has become quick and easy.

Pros

I have been using Dragon for the past two years. It has helped me to become more productive at work. With the Dragon software, I transcribe more audio hours per week compared to typing on a qwerty keyboard.

Cons

As someone with a Caribbean accent, I had to train the Dragon software to recognise my pronunciation of many words. Training the software took a little time; however, it was worth it. Dragon now recognises my pronunciation perfectly, and this has resulted in greater accuracy.

### "Many issues with functionality"

May 17, 2020

4.0

Pros

When it works! It works well. I like the ability to create custom command which is very important to my use. The navigation of websites is pretty good most of the time! The ability to create custom commands for specialized applications is also nice to have.

Cons

The biggest issue that I have with the software, it does not consistently work well. I find myself having to literally reboot my computer to get the software operating again with applications and websites. Some of the issues are very frustrating, such as; working with a common application such as Word I find that menu navigation just does not work. Working with email software such as Office 365 when I speak on certain fields of a form, it just simply does not work. For example I have yet to be able to set the subject line using Dragon. There are numerous times when I get the caption "say that again" and when this happens it simply will not correct itself. I find myself have been you reboot my computer. Very frustrating! When using Google Chrome, after a period of time Dragon just stopped working with the product. Once this occurs you simply have to review your computer. This is very frustrating as well. It also seems to fail we Google Chrome over time. For example, very seldom at my able continue working with Chrome after several hours Dragon simply stopped functioning.

Reason for choosing Dragon Professional Individual

I chose Dragon speech recognition because of the marketing, and I must say that I am of the opinion that the product is not hold up to its marketing hype.

### "Dictation Made Easy"

April 23, 2019

5.0

I dictate regularly, and it makes it so much easier to write notes (and saves my fingers from early arthritis, I'm sure). I'm able to "teach" this program medical terminology, and it makes my job so much easier. Would highly recommend for anyone who needs to write notes at length.

Pros

Dragon is one of those software apps that seems to have been around forever, and for good reason. Having used this for medical dictation, I can say Dragon is perhaps the best in the field. It's easy to use, easy to set up, and it adapts rather well (you can add your own words that may not normally be recognized, so medical terminology can be programmed in based on your pronunciation). In addition to dictation, which Dragon does extremely well, you can also use Dragon to execute commands based on voice prompts. While I use this feature less, it is still rather functional. In short, Dragon adapts well and performs well. It's the leader in dictation software for a reason.

Cons

My only complaint would be that it uses up a lot of memory, which can be a problem on older machines. I personally use my laptop primarily, which is newer and does not run into these problems, but if you're forced to use an older desktop it may be laggy at times.

### " Dragon NaturallySpeaking Review"

March 26, 2019

1.0

I wish I could say that this solved a business problem or for me rather an academic accommodation issue. I spend more time making corrections after this program dictates then I do if I just type it myself. The entire purpose of me purchasing this crap for a second time was to make life easier and leave me time to focus on more important things, but I could never be so lucky instead I wasted hundreds of dollars on a program that has done nothing but cause me to get creative with my use of obscenities.

Pros

I can read and not take at the same time- when it decides to work.

Cons

It is very inaccurate, I often have to type what I dictated and go back over the reading again. This is the only speech recognition that works with sonnocent except that it doesn't work with that program, it dictates hi, him, and ummm was a complete waste of money especially the premium price for dragon professional, there are cheaper programs that work better, it is a bummer that Dragon has an exclusive license with sonnocet, because I have to listen to and dictate 28 hours of recordings every week, since this hot garbage of a program does not work for the purpose I purchased it for. Some smartalic will say well you need to run the accuracy tuner, or let the program improve accuracy, well I am not a moron and I have done this and GUESS WHAT? IT GETS WORSE, YOU CANNOT DEFEND THIS GARBAGE!!!!

### "Dragon Is The Premier Voice to Text Solution With Excellent Voice Command Editing"

January 18, 2022

5.0

I have been very pleased with Dragon Professional. I have used it for years and every version I use gets better. My needs and use is rather basic. I don't use a lot of advanced features. What I do use is excellent and lets me get the job done effectively and efficiently.

Pros

The quality of voice recognition is outstanding! This alone makes Dragon stand out. Add to that the ability to effectively edit documents by voice alone and nothing else I've tried compares. Very very good.

Cons

To get the best benefit you need to train the software. It's not hard. It's worth it. It's also somewhat annoying.

### "Making Connection Easier for Those with Disabilities"

February 24, 2020

4.0

Our clients can stay connected which adds to their mental well being. This is important to the caregivers at West Coast Independent Living. The more independence these folks feel, the more empowered they are.

Pros

I researched and purchased this software for the folks in our independent living facility. People here are physically disabled but mentally sound- and usually are new to living with a disability due to illness,an accident etc. This speech recognition software allows our clients to stay connected through the internet just as they had before. Emails, internet searching and using application such as Microsoft Word are accessible to them once more.

Cons

The icon at the bottom which we keep "pinned" to the banner for clients ease of use, can sometimes be too close to other icons. When you do \*not\* wish to use the software, if you inadvertently press the icon it can take a while to wait for the software to load etc to be able to close it down. For people who cannot use their hands, it can be hard to close all of the windows when not in use. As this software likely is used by those with physical impairments, it is just something to note.

### "I have used this for my writing business. Stopped using it after a few months because of issues."

June 5, 2018

4.0

You can dictate your work and emails which allows you to think through the problem. It does allow you to control the computer as well.

Pros

I liked that I could talk to my computer and write my articles. It was supposed to make my life a little easier. The whole idea is to make it simpler for me. For the most part, it picked up accurately. However, there are times when it didn't work like it was supposed to.

Cons

Where to begin? It takes forever for the software to install. It worked great at first, but after a while, it lost accuracy. It wouldn't pick up the words correctly, and when I would try to correct it, the program didn't respond accurately. I often would have to use the keyboard and mouse to go in and fix the words later. I ended up taking two to three times as long to write my articles. On top of that, even after exiting the program it would continue to run in the background. My system has 16GB RAM, and it still slowed my computer down as though I only had a couple of gigs.

### "Used to be great!"

March 11, 2021

3.0

As per the title - this software used to be great, even excellent! Later versions are poor in comparison and I am now looking to switch to another product most definitely. I did think I would ever switch from Dragon!

Pros

Difficult to say – used to be a great piece of software now it isjust a continual disruption…

Cons

It basically just keeps failing – it is not consistent in terms of its operation and use. For example, this morning, I trained a couple of words i.e. acronyms that I use on a regular basis. This spelling was accepted and I applied it a couple of times. Only an hour later, the words are not recognised. I try to re-iinput the same word and same spelling again, but it reverts to a normal spelling. Also regularly now, words appear with extra letters in them – as per the example here with input, it is not that I cannot spell input it is just that this is how Dragon spells it… Have had various problems recently and every time the aim of customer service is to get you off the phone as quickly as possible – to be quite frank this business has lost the plot.

### "No tech support"

March 11, 2022

4.0

I have abandoned Dragon and am now using windows speech recognition. So far I am very happy with a new product and wish I had switched long ago. I do not want to use the software of a company that fails to give technical support, no matter how good the product is. Oh by the way, for the one problem I trawled through the tech support sites over and over, trying to find solutions to, in particular, the one problem. Nothing.

Pros

I used Dragon Naturallyspeaking Professional Individual 14 for a number of years. Recognition accuracy is excellent. The ability to create custom commands this is superb. The software has a great deal going for it.

Cons

I had two technical problems that were very seriously hindering my capacity to use the program. All attempts to get a tech support failed. On one occassion I was referred to an independent software support accompanying called Just Answer and after paying about $30 still did not have my problem fixed (only tried to fix one of them on that occasion).

### "Good concept, only fair execution"

November 20, 2018

3.0

Extensive Laboratory use

Pros

We have been using Dragon for years - while the concept is excellent, the execution is only fair. Easy to use, easy to set up, very nice "canned comments" and functionality to use.

Cons

Errors are frequent enough to cause concern - going into, then back out of records for recording and re-recording can be problematic. Incorrect translations are frequent enough to cause concerns - translation of words like "thymus" into "time us" is not acceptable. The company does appear to come out with real-time improvements and efforts to correct, however, the errors that make it through are concerning.

### "Writing More With Dragon"

December 3, 2019

5.0

This program helped me to deliver more freelance work because it cut down on the time I spent typing out my clients requests. I also found the program useful in other word processing programs that I used frequently like Ms Word and Google Docs. The software is well worth the investment, especially if you are writing for fun or for a career.

Pros

This software allowed me to cur my writing time in half, because I could speak the words into my headset and the program would type it automatically. This program helped me excel in my freelance business, since I could write more orders during the day for my clients.

Cons

I found that having an accent with this software can cause the program to type out the wrong words. This and get annoying especially when you have a thick accent that pronounces certain words in a different way. For me, if I tried to say “I helped someone”, the program would always type “I hoped someone”. This became rather annoying and frustrating, because I couldn’t correct my country accent.

### "The only full service voice dictation software."

June 12, 2018

5.0

Very cheap and effective Medical dictation software.

Pros

First of all this is really all about the Medical edition of the software. I support 50 doctors who use this software on a daily basis. I have users who speak at barely a whisper and then I have doctors who will speak so loudly and fast to dictate you would think they are having a shouting match with someone. It can be trained to pick up speech patterns and accents. It's a very accurate piece of software and each version keeps getting better. The dedicated support team we have access to with Dragon is top notch as well. On average they respond to my odd ball problems within an hour and have some potential fixes.

Cons

There are times when Dragon will start lagging and not properly dictate, this is annoying but it can be fixed. Since we use Citrix in our environment we have to occasionally run a program to restore vSync and after doing so Dragon is back to picking everything up.

### "Useful software, but not quite up to par by current standards"

March 12, 2018

3.0

Less neck and back pain. Dictating long projects can be faster and easier than typing.

Pros

I only use Dragon for very long projects, i.e. translating novels. Being able to dictate hundreds of pages is fantastic, since I used to experience neck pain after work. It also includes a long list of control commands for other programs as well as your OS. I myself don't use this capablity, but it can definitely come in handy if you are injured or disabled.

Cons

I have been using the software for about 7 years now and I don't think it has kept up with the times. There are other great options for speech recognition that you don't need to train beforehand. I use Google Docs on my phone and it picks up virtually everything in all 4 of my working languages. Before using Dragon, you will need to set up and "train" the software by reading several texts into the microphone. I used to be fine with this 7 years ago, but in 2018 it shouldn't be necessary . One last con: I don't like how Dragon seems to run in the background even after I've closed it. I used to see processes associated with it in my Windows Task Manager/start menu and had to jump through hoops to delete them manually. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem anymore in newer versions, though.

### "Best Speech Recognition, Hands Down. Literally."

April 8, 2020

5.0

Overall this software is the best of its kind. It may not come with my personal vocabulary completely represented, but it can learn what it doesn't already know and I don't have to argue with it over whether I said \*Rub a conservative amount of ointment on the entire area." or "Rubber serving plenary arias." (Actual real life mistake from a leading competitor's speech recognition software we have all had the displeasure of dealing with when sending messages in the car). It's the first thing I install on any new device I purchase.

Pros

It's accurate and doesn't force you to repeat the same sentence at it so many times you catch yourself screaming at an inanimate object in front of a busy lobby full of clients.

Cons

I would like to see a larger dictionary from initial setup and a more intuitive punctuation algorithm.

Reason for choosing Dragon Professional Individual

It's the best option available and has been for what seems like ever. As I said above, when I talk to Dragon it puts what I said down. Verbatim. The others tend to offer up mostly word salad frustratingly often and aren't worth the time and effort. You know it's a high-quality product when so many people are willing to take up precious space doubling up and pay handsomely to use it over every free version, usually already installed and impossible to remove, on the market.

### "Great dictation software"

March 20, 2019

5.0

I have been using Dragon as an alternative to typing my novels. When used consistently, it provides for larger numbers of words per hour than I could ever type and it gives my wrists a break. It has a learning curve that's not something to ignore. You have to train the software and be patient with it and yourself at first. My preferred method of working with it is to record myself and then use Dragon to transcribe my dictation. It does a lot better with non fiction than with fiction at first. It's not great with exotic names (so if you write unconventional character names, you will have a few issues unless you use easier variants for dictation), but it can be trained to recognize even those if you take the time to correct it. It's great if you spend a large number per day typing, as it will reduce the strain you put on your wrists. With practice, it also increases the number of words per hour you can get on paper. Please bear in mind though that I spent more time training myself to dictate than I did learning how to use the software or to train it. Dictating a piece of fiction is a very different process than typing it and it will take time at first to get Dragon to understand you. Unless you have a very clean accent, you'll spend more time training it to recognize your speech patterns. English is not my native language and my accent is not a standard one, but I had very few issues getting it to accurately transcribe what I was saying.

Pros

Dragon is my preferred dictation software for my novels. I love the accuracy and how it can be improved through using the software repeatedly.

Cons

Dragon is not the best at handling accents and transcription can take a while.

### "Overall, a huge time saver"

October 12, 2017

5.0

Time saved and ease of use. I have never been fond of typing and prefer to be able to express my thoughts orally - I can do that and still have a written record or response easily available and legible.

Pros

I have been using the Dragon line for many years and it has gotten considerably easier to use and more accurate with each new release. Gone are the days that you had to spend hours on end training the product to recognize your speech patterns, idioms, idiosyncrasies and accents. The accuracy continues to improve and the formatting and command options are, at times overwhelming.

Cons

The help menus have a lot to be desired, if you are looking to find a quick answer, forget it! You have to know the exact terminology and context that is used in the help section or else spend a lot of time searching. When you do find an answer, the writers assume that you are a programming genius that knows exactly what is being discussed - if you need plain language answers, you won't find them. The manufacturer's support is, bluntly put - non existent, you will find more helpful information in user forums and blogs.
