Before Metaplane, we had spent a lot of time building internal tools to monitor the data quality in our data warehouse; then, we found Metapane! Their platform did what we were doing and way more! After a simple setup process, we spent less time worrying about data quality and more time taking advantage of our data! Pros Metaplane provides an easy-to-use dashboard and monitoring solution to keep track of data quality across our various data sets. We used it to level up our ability to catch issues before they affected executive reporting, product insights, or data-driven products. Cons The main hurdle was that, after turning Metaplane on, we discovered many data issues we were unaware of. So we had an initial backlog of things to fix! This was a good thing in the end, though! We used to only find out we had data issues when users alerted us that reports looked odd or were broken. Sometimes this was days after the actual incident occurred. With Metaplane we usually fix data errors before our stakeholders notice them and before they influence decisions. Pros Metaplane makes it very easy to be identified when there are issues with your data environment. It uses AI to learn what patterns are typical for your data so that it can notify you of discrepancies without you having to set thresholds for every test. Cons When you first start using the tool you may get a lot of false alarms as it learns your data and you learn how to fine-tune the controls so that it only alerts you about priority issues. Pros The best part of Metaplane is its ML algorithm for understanding the shape and trends of existing data. This feature saves tremendous time in setting up meaningful alerts and notifications. For example, instead of you trying to manually figure out what the right daily record count is supposed be, Metaplane's algorithm automatically learns what the right count should be.In my experience, this algorithm is right 99% of the time, and on the rare occasions where adjustments need to be made, corrective feedback can be easily given to the algorithm with a few clicks in the UI. Cons Metaplane is a fast-growing company, and sometimes newly released features are a bit rough around the edges. For example, in one of the alerts I received, the name of the failed data quality test came through as an internal ID of some sort, instead of a human-understandable name of the affected table.Despite annoyance from these blips, they’ve also proven responsive Metaplane is to customer feedback. When I reported the problem with the alert notifications, the issue was fixed almost immediately by the team! The benefit of using Metaplane is that we avoid failures and mistakes that are costly in terms of our data team's reputation and in terms of clients who are using their data to generate additional revenue and where the cost of inaccurate or missing data is high. Pros Metaplane is hands down the easiest and most useful data observability tool on the market. We use it to monitor failures and anomalies across all of our clients' data stacks. Most monitoring tools are difficult to set up and can’t differentiate between critical and non-critical failures, which results in notification fatigue. Metaplane is the opposite. Metaplane is quick to configure both from the start and on an ongoing basis. It automatically differentiates between critical and non critical failures, making it an extremely actionable data observability tool. With Metaplane we are able to easily and accurately test our own ETL pipelines and the outputs of our data models and catch errors before business users even know anything is wrong. This helps maintain our reputation as a data engineering org and also saves our clients a ton of time and money, especially when we catch errors related to data integrations that power revenue-generating flows or advertising data where the cost of mistakes is high.

It helps build confidence in data across many dimensions of quality and an ability to understand the impact of issues that it identifies in a way that is immediately interactive to users in a non-invasive way. Can easily set up new tests within minutes and provide rapid value to the business. Pros Great self service capability that is very flexible and dynamic to my needs. I'm continually surprised by new features that seem to anticipate my next request with a substantial library of technologyx integrations. The product is easy to use and provides some impressive capability for tracking data lineage, training models of our test patterns, setting up out of box data tests, and ability to add customize tests and schedules. Fair pricing and amazing customer support when and where it's needed. Cons Not much. Minor: There could be some improvements in bulk operations but there has already been a commitment to make these features available for parts of the product. Super helpful when getting the tool set up and ongoing support is great. Pros Metaplane was super easy to get up and running and instantly provided us with insights into our data warehouse we had been missing. It's great operationally for observability of our data loads. We are now delving into other features of the product to understand what data is being used and what's becoming most critical to support. Cons Metaplane is still a new and evolving product. There aren't many cons but some enhancements in RBAC would be appreciated. To make the most of some of the data quality testing we would like some direct access for business users and currently we aren't able to customise permissions enough to roll out the tool wider than the core Data Engineering team. I appreciate how the Metaplane team constantly works on provided feedback and keeps enhancing the tool. Cons Nothing to dislike. I like to have access to Metaplane historical metadata, which can help identify the impacted areas (impacted dashboards).
