" November 30, 2022 5.0 Overall I love Plottr. I used to be so confused about plot and scene structure. This software dispelled all of that for me. Finally, in what seems like years I not just rediscovered my story but am excited to work on on it. Pros I love this software. The plot and scene templates have helped me create a better story then what I had started with. I wish I started using Plottr sooner in my writing process. I love that I'm able to add photos as inspiration for characters, placed and things. Pros I love the depth in which I can craft my notes and characters. I can move seamlessly from one section to another. Cons The online mobile app does not work properly. The glitches prevent updating. So, it's not a trusted source like the desktop version is. I like the program and its worth the cost Pros I love the templates which compile and condense the many methods for outlining that I've researched. I also like the ability to outline and to then see it in the timeline along with the ability to track subplots and characters. It's why I bought the program. Used along with Scrivenor it is complete system. Cons The ipad app is a needs some work. In the timeline portion the add scene above and below doesn't work. It always adds above. Also the moving the scenes around functions but is a little squirrely and has messed up my timeline more than once to where I couldn't use it. A reset would be good there. I can sit at my desk with a clear understanding of what my next steps are and the required overall work on my project. It covers the daily tasks and the big picture vision. Pros I am a visual writer, and it has always helped me to see my story as it is being constructed. It also allows me to build a series bible for my characters and events so that I do not need to continually reference my books. This software mimics the big white board for me and organizes my thoughts in a way that I don't look like a delusional conspiracy theorist. Cons There are some elements of the software that are not intuitive, and it takes some bouncing around to figure out. However, the support team at Plottr are excellent at responding to inquiries and addressing necessary adjustments. Pros It’s great for building world books for my novels. To me it’s better than Scrivener. I love the fact that I can view my story from different angles. I love the functionality of it. I love Scrivener and continue to use it. However, Plottr gives me a more in-depth way to plot my novel and to track all the myriad pieces of information I need to keep my writing on track. I've recommended Plottr to everyone in my writing group and anyone else who might be interested. Pros I love the flexibility. Between the ready-made templates, community templates, and the ability to build your own, you can structure Plottr to fit any project or writing style. Plus, the gurus at Plottr are always incorporating updates or improvements. Cons Every time I thought, Plottr would be great if only it could do this, they rolled out that feature. I'm still learning, but I'm enjoying every step of the journey. Pros I love the templates! They're especially helpful if you know the type of story you want to write, but aren't completely sure how to lay it out/outline it. The templates are customizable, so you can use the parts that work for your project, adding to them or omitting anything that doesn't fit your needs. Moving forward, some quality control could be useful since sometimes I have a feeling that they publish bug fix releases on almost on weekly basis. Pros The software is very intuitive to use. The most useful functionality is the timeline that I use to follow the story weaves. Cons Dragging and dropping scene cards is not always as easy as it could be. Also, I would like to my character template to be the one that opens and not the generic description when I open the character to edit mode. I've only used it for fiction projects so far but can see that it would work well for nonfiction, too. The program is always rolling out new features. Pros I love the visual representation of the different plot lines for my book. With Plottr, I can track the main plot along with any subplots in my story. I'm constantly learning from the YouTube videos they create. Pros Having a dedicated tool with which to organize the plot for my novel has been a game-changer for me. No more file cards everywhere! I love the details provided with each beat when I hover the mouse over that beat. I love being able to integrate with Microsoft Word so I can bring my outline into Word and continue my writing there. I'm discovering other uses for it beyond plotting novels, such as using it to schedule newsletter topics. Pros I like the easy customization of Plottr. I can make my own plot and character templates, add colored tags, etc. It's making it easier to edit my novel after the fact, and going forward I plan to actually plot my novel before writing it--that will save so much time! I bought the software a couple years ago and the developers keep adding new features. I can even use it on my phone! Cons The only thing I might add is a hex color picker. Plottr has several pre-set colors to choose from for tags and what-not, and lets the user specify a color with a hex code, but a color picker would be nice, too. Review Source DO Douglas O. I had stalled out and bought Plottr for the Snowflake Method template and used it to fill in the outline and finish my first draft. I then used it to outline and complete the first draft of a second novel. Pros Timeline and Snowflake Method Template both help with the organization of my plot. Cons I would like a Story Grid template since that is what my editor uses.
