Revit is an indispensable backbone for modern engineering and design workflows, completely transforming how structural models and construction documents are coordinated. While navigating the dense, cluttered layout of the user interface can be daunting at first and requires a significant time investment to master, it eventually becomes second nature for efficient day-to-day modeling. Despite coming with a heavy price tag, performance bottlenecks on massive files, and frustrating native rendering limitations that require third-party plugins, the sheer efficiency, parametric coordination, and multi-discipline power Revit brings to complex projects make it hard to imagine working without it.

Pros

Revit's greatest strength lies in its parametric change management, which automatically updates floor plans, sections, and schedules the moment a modification is made in any single view, drastically reducing coordination errors. Additionally, the software offers robust documentation capabilities, allowing for the seamless generation of detailed construction drawings and quantity takeoffs directly from the 3D model. Its strong ecosystem also provides exceptional multi-discipline interoperability, making it easy to integrate structural analysis tools and coordinate complex projects across large engineering and architectural teams. Once you push past the initial learning phase, the organized ribbon layout and customizable keyboard shortcuts make the user interface efficient for day-to-day modeling.

Cons

On the downside, Revit is notoriously performance-heavy, meaning large models can quickly become sluggish and demand powerful hardware alongside meticulous file management like worksets and purging to stay functional. The user interface features a dense, cluttered layout with a steep learning curve that makes onboarding beginners difficult, as mastering custom families, templates, and parameters takes months of dedicated practice. Furthermore, its weak native rendering engine lacks modern visual quality and speed, almost always forcing users to rely on external third-party plugins to achieve client-ready, photorealistic results.

Revit is the backbone of the architecture industry, and is the main resource for bringing architectural visions into constructable reality. I am able to effectively collaborate with both coworkers and consultants very efficiently.

Pros

You can essentially create 3D models and 2D drafting simultaneously. If you get good with creating templates, you can almost automate the drafting process while modelling the building. The interface is subdivided very well, which makes navigation very straightforward as well.

Cons

When it fatally crashes while working on a project. Thankfully, they’ve implemented a recovery option, so work doesn’t get lost the way it once did.

Pros

I like how everything is integrated together between the different disciplines when drafting. Any changes made to the mechanical systems (ie, location) will reflect also on the electrical and architectural plans.

Cons

I wish they would have more mechanical HVAC selections to choose from when doing a load calculation of the building. That way, we would not have to use another third party software to do load calculations and just do everything in Revit.

For specific projects the software has worked and BIM is a great tool. If the project is not complexed with a lot of other disciplines it may not be worth using.

Pros

The software is able to detect areas of conflict when developing the model. This will aid in eliminating expense change orders during construction.

Cons

Differently the upfront costs to implement the software into the design process. New powerful computers are a must along with competent staff.

The clear and simple visualization that helps in understanding the project with a detailed information.

Pros

I love the way it automatically produces the schedules and estimate the material that helps in real time budgeting of the project and meet the deadlines.

Cons

It usually work with large and complex projects that needs special skills and technical knowledge to work with the software.

Very good. It's a staple of my drafting. It can be frustrating but there's good communities that have workarounds

Pros

It's compatibility with all the disciplines, mechanical, architectural, civil, landscaping etc. also the functionality to help with designs

Cons

The model has to be built perfectly to allow all the designs to run smoothly. When using it to design you really need a lot of experience
