Mechanical Engineer Design Used the software for: 2+ years ### "User-friendly CAD design and editing software" September 19, 2025 5.0 This program aids in my design flow and has become an invaluable tool. I would recommend this to everyone who is involved in design. It not only helps on the front end, but saves a lot of time if you just need to tweak 2D drawings created from giant 3D assemblies. Pros I like how easy and intuitive this program is. There is basically no learning curve, and even if you do get stuck, it has a convenient search bar that works well. There is also plentiful support to be found on the Autodesk community website. I use it daily to import and export DXFs and DWGs that work seamlessly with SolidWorks and Adobe Illustrator. The last thing I will mention is how unique the selection tool is and how very helpful it is. Cons There really is nothing major that I dislike. There are a few minor things, such as not being able to have driving dimensional annotations, but that could be more of an intended choice. The only other thing is that it does not use the native file explorer very well, and sometimes it is a little tricky to find files on your computer inside the program. Review Source RB Ryan B. Pros AutoCAD provides ease of design and also helps in the drafting world for engineers. Cons Navigating and utilizing 3D is hard in AutoCAD there is Fusion and Revit to support that. Pros What i like most about autocad is that it is very easy to use once get used to it and know what around the program/functions. Pros .This is the most precise drafting tool ever made. Normally I use this tool for 2D drafting in civil engineering related drawings. Cons When it comes to civil engineering related 3d drawings, AutoCAD is not so user friendly when compared with Revit. December 30, 2025 4.0 I use the Student Version for designing electrical systems and lighting layouts. While it is a powerful tool for precision drafting, the random freezes when inserting blocks can be very stressful when deadlines are close. However, being able to submit compatible .dwg files is essential for my university courses. Pros The access to the Student License with my institutional email is a lifesaver. For my electrical engineering projects, the layer management is perfect for separating lighting circuits from the architectural floor plan. It is the absolute standard in Panama, so mastering it is necessary for my career. Cons It has frustrating stability issues. Sometimes, even in simple files (like a small house plan), placing a single object/block causes the software to freeze indefinitely, forcing me to restart my entire PC. The software was stable, professional-grade, and provided great value when ownership and upgrade options were available. Cons The move to a subscription-only model ended my use of the product. I originally purchased AutoCAD outright for over $6,000 and paid for every upgrade path for many years. That was a major investment in both time and money, which is now disregarded by forcing ongoing payments just to keep access. The company who produces AutoCAD, Autodesk, is corporation that provides software products and services for the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, education, and entertainment industries. What I especially appreciate about AutoCAD is how Autodesk has structured the interface similarly to that of other software products, which makes it easier to navigate other software products I also use. Pros I use AutoCAD almost daily as an engineering professional. In my experience, I have found it to be one of the most widely used computer aided design software's in the world. This makes doing business with both suppliers and customers worldwide so much more convenient as we share CAD files and do not have to deal with exporting files to different filetypes, worry about inconsistencies between software features, or any of the other inconveniences that come along with working in two different software's. Cons Like most software's do, AutoCAD regularly goes through updates most years. In the last several years my experience is that the updates are subtle. However they may not always be super obvious and may take a little bit of a learning curve to understand without prior training.
