It may be lacking in some customization options, but overall it meets all of my church's needs. Pros Very intuitive. Very easy-to-use. Very affordable. Very useful reports that the program auto-generates. Cons The only real issue I've had with the software is with custom grouping. While the ledger does allow grouping in terms of a number, I was disappointed that I couldn't actually group everything on the ledger. For example, I would like to group several line items under "professional expense", but I couldn't simply budget x amount to professional expense. I also am having to use an excel sheet to sum up totals using the general ledger tool. November 13, 2018 5.0 We have current and up to date records on members and visitors. The system is flexible enough to add fields as needed. The connectivity between the donations and accounting modules help in reducing the number of hours spent in the financial arena. The technical support team is great! In addition, the monthly 20 minute seminars keeps things fresh. This is a great system with great support. Pros Easy to use, easy to navigate, flexible and has a great technical support staff. I call them for any and all questions. They are patient and thorough. Cons Frequent updates. Other than that, I do not have any concerns. The cost of the support is minimal and you can use it as many times as necessary. It keeps track of donations over multiple years, so you can go back if necessary. The online tutorials are superb and there is always some available to answer questions. Pros The ease which you can enter members, find them, and enter the donations. Cons The programs used to be easy to use. Now, there have been so many changes that it takes a programmer to run complicated reports for our Methodist Annual Conference. I imagine they would comment that they offer "helps", but who has time to figure out how to find what I am looking for? Also, the programs used to connect the Membership Module with the Donations Module. This is not happening any more, causing me to have to flip back and forth between modules to find folks. November 16, 2018 5.0 It is a great program that makes life a lot easier in the church office! I have recommended it to my other churches and they are looking into it. Pros I use it every day at work and like how all of the parts work together. Making lists, labels, donation statements, payroll, budgeting or accounting. Cons In payroll, I would like a better way to keep track of vacation and sick time, we just get a lump sum at the beginning of the year, it doesn't accrue monthly. There doesn't seem to be a good way to keep track of that in payroll unless you print out reports. There are superior CMS databases. Pros Church Windows makes it easy to capture information about church members and visitors. I appreciate the integration between the different modules. Cons There was a time when this was cutting edge software. Church Windows has relied on being the dominant force in the market, and as a result hasn't made improvements that more recent church database systems have. Pastor Religious Institutions Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Great if you know Data Entry" November 13, 2018 4.0 The benefits have been easily updating mailing lists and labels, church directory, and donations recording. The drawbacks have come in the last 2-3 years with making it more complicated when trying to figure out how to edit some data (the checkbox next to "include on directory" is next to another note "special character" and confused my secretary so she wasn't checking the box and people where not getting included. Also with the designing - see comment under Cons. Pros I like this software as it keeps all our information in one place and is easily update-able. Pledge recording and reports do away with by-hand bookkeeping. Cons The recent changes to formatting forms is frustrating. Where previously one could simply click on the details from a list of what to include, on a pledge statement for instance, is now an editable form which one needs training in. Even I, who have good computer experience, need a step-by-step instruction on how to design what we need. The integration of the various modules makes it seamless. The new upgrades to the membership module have been helpful and resolved a number of the complaints we had with that module. Cons It glitches at times. It is not intuitive although the help videos are excellent as well as the phone support. On the financial module, you can't choose whether you are running on an accrual basis or a cash basis. The system is set up for accrual based accounting only. Cons I think there are too many features that are hard to understand. Some of the descriptions and titles of the features do not make sense for what their actual use is intended for. I also think that if one thing is checked, it messes up many other features and it is hard to figure out where the mistake was. I also do not like that changes in address and other demographic information can only be changed in the membership module and that only one person can be on it at a time. Cons I would like it better if I didn't have to add a check number. I don't see the checks - only the empty offering envelope. Marking the entries cash or check would help me balance quicker. The fact that it is limited to a PC and not a mac unless you use the online version is frustrating. The online version is slow and has some serious lag issues. Also being limited to using firefox for the online version is difficult as well. Pros we still use it because I do not have the time to switch the whole accounting software. Cons This software is difficult to navigate and to perform the necessary tasks it takes multiple clicks and lots of extra steps. Finding functions that you use all the time is difficult. Preparing for the new year has been simplified tremendously. Pros Church Windows is user friendly and feels like other navigation sites that I use. The ability to access different areas when I am using another function has made the use easier. Cons There are times it doesn't allow me to back space when I am searching by name for an account and I get a box saying no such account exists. Really, that was why I was trying to backspace. I think I expect too much out of it sometimes. Cons The software is very limited in certain areas. Especially in the reports section, I can run different versions of the report. Pros I like the GUI when you first start up the software. I can easily enter income and bills. The same with donations. I also like the fact that you can see if you have any unpaid bills. Cons If accounts are not connected, you have to do double posting to make the balances match the way they are supposed to be. This is if you have assets that match the different funds. Though I cannot find how to set the check printing defaults, such as not printing on both sides. Review Source SS Steve S. Pros It keeps records, and you can run a limited amount of reports without struggling. Cons The constant changes, hard to find items, cannot go back to prior years in membership, many calls to support for simple answers. It is hard to pull reports out of. it takes a while to learn the changes from the last update and a new one comes along. I consider myself a little bit of a tech guy, our staff with little computer knowledge struggles to do their job. Finance Chairperson Religious Institutions Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Designed and customized for church finance; good customer support" November 16, 2018 4.0 Our auditor, an outside accountant, does not understand why we don't go to something like Quickbooks. While I have not tried that, I can't imagine converting to another system. I like the way the different modules of Church Windows work together (e.g., Membership and Donations) -- especially with the recently introduced enhancements to the Membership module. Pros The reports fit my needs. There are frequent webinars to assist users in getting to know all of the features of the software, and those webinars are geared toward real issues seen in church accounting and membership tracking. New features are (sometimes) introduced in response to customer requests. We have found it very valuable to be able to access the system from home using the Cloud-based version. Cons Non-accountants find it hard to get used to the system. If you need to run two or more separate sets of books (e.g., for General Funds, Trustee funds, and Women's group funds, all with different treasurers), it's hard to make those two work together, especially when it comes to transferring monies between them. When you add a new accounting line, it is very easy to forget to make all of the changes necessary so that the new lines show up in reports based on different funds or groups of funds. November 21, 2018 5.0 I had to learn the system completely on my own since no one was here to train me. I was able to jump in very quickly and function. I still have a lot to learn but, I know it won't be impossible and help is just a phone call away! Pros Very user friendly, easy to edit errors, customer support is absolutely wonderful! CW offers great training options too. Cons The written guides are not detailed enough. I do not understand why the AP checks are sorted in a different order than the pre-reports. There may be a sort option but, I haven't found it yet! If I make an error, corrections are not overly complicated. Pros The product was easy to use. And I appreciate the videos on how to complete year-end processes. We only do it once a year so it’s easy to forget. The videos and flyers help a great deal. Cons When I first assumed responsibilities of payroll for my church, I called for tech support. I was unfamiliar with product. The tech was not patient and almost sounded irritated that I was asking basic questions. This was a few years ago, but I’ve never forgotten it. The responses have certainly improved since but it was almost belittling at first. Have patience with new users.
