Compared to previous spec writing software such as SpecLynx or Masterworx, Speclink is much more advanced and designed for the 21st century. It is so easy to import specs and customize them as needed. The cross referencing and linking to related spec's is extremely useful.

Pros

Speclink is very intuitive and easy to use. It is clear and organized and allows you to edit custom spec's as well as load preloaded specs from your company library or previous project.

Cons

Sometimes the connected target links are too locked down and difficult to override; not the most user friendly when you simply want to turn off or eliminate a line of text that has such links.

Review source

Incentivized review: software users are invited to submit an honest review and offered a nominal incentive for their time and effort. All incentivized reviews are subject to our verification process prior to publication.

Response from Vendor

Hi Leo, Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and for highlighting how intuitive and advanced SpecLink is compared to your previous tools—we’re glad the cross-referencing and customization features are delivering value for your projects. We also appreciate your note regarding the connected target links feeling restrictive at times; feedback like this helps us continue improving flexibility and usability. Our support team is always happy to walk through configuration options or share best practices that may help reduce friction with linked content. We truly value your input and your continued use of SpecLink.

It brought me to the 21st Century of spec writing. I am still a beginner, though... I am semi-retired, and don't want to work more than 20 hurs per week. RIB will help me achieve that goal.

Pros

It's easy to use, and has a lot of good content already. I was introduced to it by \[sensitive content hidden\] and am grateful she did.

Cons

1) The #sle suffix after most (but not all) manufacturers' URLs. 2) I am having trouble getting the sheet specs to print "nicely", but perhaps that's just me.

Response from Vendor

Hi Christian, Thank you for sharing your experience and for highlighting how SpecLink has helped bring your workflow into a more modern, efficient spec-writing process—we’re glad to hear it’s been easy to use and valuable even as you continue building your expertise. The ease of use to select and remove the spec sections you need or do not need. I also like how everything is created and the sections that can be edited are highlighted and clear.

Fantastic. The platform has helped improve my spec writing and coordination. The master features are excellent tools.

Pros

Really easy to use overall. The built-in references and content are super helpful, and it’s quick to put sections together without much effort. It also makes it easier to coordinate across different disciplines, which is a big plus. The included products and manufacturers are great too—even if they don’t always fit every project perfectly, they’re a solid starting point and definitely better than starting from scratch.

Cons

Glitches with table of contents section; Content is somewhat limited for specialty systems/products.

We’re thrilled to hear how SpecLink has improved your spec writing and coordination, and that the built-in references, content, and discipline coordination features are delivering real value. It’s great to know the platform helps you efficiently assemble specifications and provides a strong starting point with included content. We also appreciate your input regarding occasional table of contents glitches and specialty content limitations, as this feedback helps guide ongoing improvements. Works fairly well. I like the online access, but there is significant lag. This may be due to my personal connection, but downloading the section to work on it should solve this problem. I was clicking on things, and nothing would happen, so I click it again, and it was a problem. It slowed editing significantly.

Pros

Fairly easy to use and I like the team comment feature. It has worked well for one spec I wrote. A read me function screen for linked team members would be helpful so they know how the program works and they do not need to comment on every line in the spec, even the ones that are not selected.

Cons

Export and Print features are a little rough and importing sections has limitations that are not fully explained, including features that do not work unless the file is "named correctly" but this is not explained.

Good specification program, could be better. Haven't tried the Revit coordination yet. That could be a game changer.

Pros

Complete specification sections and relatively easy to use, if you know the materials being used. I'd say not for someone that doesn't know the products.

Cons

Inconsistency between sections, such as spelling, grammar, and formatting. Weirdness as never printing the end of section Odd Page for the last section in a project print. Allowing the manufacturer to put their name in the section title. Big issue with that. Issue with updates not finishing, shows multiple pending but unable to complete. The updates can be extremely tedious for existing Office Templates. You have to transfer any changes to a new file or view each line item change to make sure it doesn't write over something included in the Template section.

Very positive experience. We have always felt that RIB had OUR interests first. The reporting is super easy and relevant. Makes for a great presentation to our teams.

Pros

The ease at which valued information is literally at our fingertips. Straight-forward, no complicated means by which to obtain this information. Quick and genuinely helpful customer service. Always makes our day!

Cons

All the "likes" are in my PROS bucket! I guess it would have to be the harsh reality that with RIB SpecLink we don't have the benefits as with a Project Lead Service, which really would be the icing on the cake!

Having used SpecLink at other firms in the past, using tools that have been vetted out for my company's preferences and lesson's learned helps streamline the 'spec writing' process. Now that I am managing the office masters at my current firm, I have confidence that when others produce specs, they are as up to date and correct as possible. When this idea was first presented to upper management, the cost was deemed very valuable for the benefits.

Pros

Ease of switching paragraphs on or off compared to word where I would be deleting things. Also, being notified of updates to references rather than having to do research myself or finding out about errors after the fact.

Cons

I have not been able to add manufacturer 'tracked' content to my company's master specification sections. This would be a great benefit to other design team members that are referencing this material, so that outdated manufacturer information does not enter current sections.
