April 15, 2026 5.0 Compared to previous spec writing software such as SpecLynx or Masterworx, Speclink is much more advanced and designed for the 21st century. It is so easy to import specs and customize them as needed. The cross referencing and linking to related spec's is extremely useful. Pros Speclink is very intuitive and easy to use. It is clear and organized and allows you to edit custom spec's as well as load preloaded specs from your company library or previous project. Cons Sometimes the connected target links are too locked down and difficult to override; not the most user friendly when you simply want to turn off or eliminate a line of text that has such links. This may be due to my personal connection, but downloading the section to work on it should solve this problem. I was clicking on things, and nothing would happen, so I click it again, and it was a problem. It slowed editing significantly. Pros Fairly easy to use and I like the team comment feature. It has worked well for one spec I wrote. A read me function screen for linked team members would be helpful so they know how the program works and they do not need to comment on every line in the spec, even the ones that are not selected. Cons Export and Print features are a little rough and importing sections has limitations that are not fully explained, including features that do not work unless the file is "named correctly" but this is not explained. I am very impressed with the program overall, and I recommend other AEC profossionals to give it a serious look if they are looking for Specification Writing software. Pros The ease of use. If you are paying attention, even the most inexperienced person can start writing a specification. I also like the 'road map' you get when you start a Section and it promts you to items you should have in the spec (green), and the items to consider (yellow). Cons Occasionally it is hard to add Manufacturers to a Division. I also detest the 'blanks' that show up when you print or save. I know that's on me, but is it possible to have those empty spaces change color (like Red) so it is even easer to spot them? Easy to set up project documentation using SpecLink. Pros Most features fairly closely mimic MSWord which makes it simple to use. Easy to remove sections and paragraphs from specs/documents. Cons Editor notes are difficult to recognize. Not intuitive to be able to copy and paste Word content into SpecLink documents. Printing documents could be more user friendly. Pros Relatively easy to use when generating specifications, with all paragraphs visible throughout each section. Cons Some aspects are difficult to use, such as creating page footers, or editing global terms. We have also seen a few glitches with choice fields displaying the wrong information, or duplicate information. I wish there were training videos for identifying what should be linked and how when writing new template specifications. Also, a training video that explains where all the specification details and assemblies originate and how they are connected to the product. Pros I am delighted with the concept of exclusion and inclusion in specification writing. It makes the process very adaptable to other similar projects. Cons When I use typical symbols such as "&," the software is confused and substitutes words that don't make sense. As an independent specifier, I've been asked to work in other programs from time to time based on a client's preferences, and those have only made me appreciate Speclink more. I also like that RIB will listen to feedback and are constantly working to make the program better. Pros I have been using Speclink for the past 10 years and find it easy to use and easy to modify to meet my company's needs. I appreciate the appropriately restrained level of detail in the content making it more user-friendly, the linking between parts and sections which reduces conflicts and ensures a higher level of coordination throughout our documents and formatting and printing features which greatly reduce time. It truly makes the documentation process more efficient, which allows us to spend our time on the things that matter - sharing our knowledge and contributing to a project's success. Cons I wish I could search the whole database for a specific product I've used before, that isn't in my master, but I want to find again. The built-in references and content are super helpful, and it’s quick to put sections together without much effort. It also makes it easier to coordinate across different disciplines, which is a big plus. The included products and manufacturers are great too—even if they don’t always fit every project perfectly, they’re a solid starting point and definitely better than starting from scratch. Cons Glitches with table of contents section; Content is somewhat limited for specialty systems/products. Haven't tried the Revit coordination yet. That could be a game changer. Pros Complete specification sections and relatively easy to use, if you know the materials being used. I'd say not for someone that doesn't know the products. Cons Inconsistency between sections, such as spelling, grammar, and formatting. Weirdness as never printing the end of section Odd Page for the last section in a project print. Allowing the manufacturer to put their name in the section title. Big issue with that. Issue with updates not finishing, shows multiple pending but unable to complete. The updates can be extremely tedious for existing Office Templates. You have to transfer any changes to a new file or view each line item change to make sure it doesn't write over something included in the Template section. Accessing the 'help' videos and notes has been extremely valuable and when issues arose that couldn't be resolved easily the support staff has been very accommodating and timely. Pros I like the ability to review questions and options, comparing them against a defined direction, as well as the links to manufacturers' information, when necessary. Cons Moving back and forth between sections can be tedious - it's not possible to leave one section open to compare something against another section without the first one closing. Cons There is a learning curve for new users, but most catch on quickly. Sometimes the software doesn't save for some reason. I am looking forward to having a one stop spot for accessing up to date specs rather than searching through our folders for older specs that are not fully updated (codes and standards). Still working though it. Pros Availability of up-to-date specs that can be coordinated with all disciplines. Edits that can be undone if the specs are used for other projects when some aspects not applicable to one project are applicable on another. We typically do a lot of copy/paste between similar projects and this can be invaluable. Cons I am not sure if it is a permissions issues but some specifications are not accessible for use with a project. Additionally, if you are working in more specialized projects, not all applicable specifications are available. For example, specification that cover piping for particular gas systems (hydrogen). With each new release, it gets better and continues to meet the needs of our Firm. Pros I love the Global Terms for quick edits and revisions rather than searching through multiple documents to make changes. It helps keep different sections referencing the same information from have accidental conflicts. Cons I want spell check to be on by default. Occasionally, SpecLink hangs up or something glitches, but the tech support is incredibly responsive and helpful. With almost 100 projects specified in SpecLink, we've proven its worth with increased project coordination, fewer change orders, and reduced production time. I would highly recommend SpecLink to any Architect or engineering firm. Pros Speclink eases the burden of mundane specification tasks. The automated updates and cross-specification formatting tools speed the finalization of the project manual and allow for a better product. Also, the depth and breadth of technical specification content (without being overly wordy) provides the ability for Clear, Correct, Concise, and Complete contract documents. Cons Speclink can improve the final assembly even further by integrating non text style document organization and greater assembly and change management options. Pros The built-in automatic updating, choice fields, intelligent linking and overall ease of use of the interface are the main reasons we made the switch. Also, customer service and tech support is swift and responsive. Cons Sometimes the linking is faulty, especially for the Table of Contents. Also, we have provided a significant number of proposed enhancements, of which only a minor fraction have been implemented. Track changes need to be improved with more options. Network slowdown or browser memory limitations sometimes reduce performance. The RIB library of available sections needs to be increased to rival the MasterSpec library as there are still many scope items that do not exist in the RIB library. I am semi-retired, and don't want to work more than 20 hurs per week. RIB will help me achieve that goal. Pros It's easy to use, and has a lot of good content already. Cons 1) The #sle suffix after most (but not all) manufacturers' URLs. 2) I am having trouble getting the sheet specs to print "nicely", but perhaps that's just me. Cons I need to check ALL the manufacturers data on the web, as I have found a number of the product model names/numbers listed in SpecLink aren't current with manufacturer's website information. I have noticed that some files that are larger in size either take a very long time to preview or don't preview at all. Review Source R Reviewer Project Coordinator Used the software for: 3-5 years ### "SpecLink is great for small Civil Engineering firms like ours" May 29, 2025 5.0 The software is pretty easy to figure out, but we attended the Cloud training session once we migrated to the Cloud version, and that helped us get started. The ongoing weekly webinars are the most useful, we have learned something new in every session. The searchable knowledgebase is such a good resource if we have a question, but the support team is available much later now, and they respond to our questions very quickly. Very pleased also with the pricing for a small firm like ours. Pros Ease of use, especially since they launched the SpecLink Cloud version. They do all the software updates, so we can focus on our specs. The visibility of master section updates makes it easy to incorporate those changes if needed. We also appreciate the ability to leave comments for collaborators. Cons We've been using SpecLink for over 10 years now, and the hardest part has been catching up with some of the changes, but the knowledgebase is a great resource (with videos!) and if we don't find an answer there, an email to support gets a prompt response. Also, it shows as an Architectural or Construction Management program, but Engineering Design should also be listed as a choice. The versatility is a wonderful experience and the ease of use makes it a breeze. Pros The ability to simply turn on or turn off content to be printed. No longer do I need to delete and add in different content for different projects, now i simply turn it off or turn it on. Brilliant. Cons Some of the content may be difficult to edit, without sufficient explanation.
