HopToDesk

## What is HopToDesk?

HopToDesk is a remote desktop and remote support platform built for IT teams, MSPs, and businesses that need to access and manage devices at scale, without the enterprise price tag. It is a cost-effective alternative to TeamViewer, AnyDesk, and ScreenConnect. Beyond fast, secure remote access, HopToDesk includes a management dashboard with device monitoring and health metrics, unattended access without stored passwords, help desk ticketing, remote command execution, custom-branded (white-label) client builds, and audit logging. MSPs can isolate each client in its own tenant with per-client branding, installers, and usage reports for billing, and a built-in importer migrates device lists straight from TeamViewer or AnyDesk. Every connection is end-to-end encrypted, and the client is open source. Start free, then scale from 3 devices to unlimited fleets on Enterprise/MSP plans. Available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and the browser.

Overall, very good. We were able to develop self branded solutions for our all our current and legacy Windows/Linux systems. Bugs when found were quickly fixed. The client/server and dashboard are full featured, and requests for new features are quickly acted on.

Pros

I like the fact that there is a build for Windows XP, this is crucial for support of our legacy systems. I also like that it’s open source, so we can modify things to suit our needs. The relay server being free allowed us to test everything out before setting up our own hosted solution. The dashboard is very useful for our team, and reasonably priced. The software is easy to use and deploy. Image quality is good and responsive. I like that MCP is supported, so we can use AI to sweep remote systems.

Cons

There are quite a few bugs in the software - their support is quite responsive about fixing them when we trip over one though. There is no 2FA on the client. This is a problem if you save remote system passwords, as it gives you access to any remote machine with no authentication. Being unable to enforce security in remote access software is a problem that needs addressing. The dashboard is a point of weakness, as we have no control over it, and can’t host it ourself. The dashboard websocket connection is a bad idea, but we seem to be stuck with it. No automated file transfer control via MCP.

Impressed that I was up and running fast. It was easy to understand the connection model. Impressed at responsiveness of connections across the continent on a rather slow PC.

Pros

Fast smooth connections. Easy file transfer and it doesn't require remote desktop display. Settings are visible but unobtrusive.

Cons

Requires user intervention for Wayland display in Ubuntu. I'd like a way to change to Xorg on the fly even if it requires a reboot and reconnection. Better yet: a transparent connection to Wayland.

Reasons for choosing HopToDesk

Too slow in connecting. Some lags while controlling.

My overall experience with HopToDesk has been excellent. It is intuitive, easy to deploy, and very user-friendly for both support agents and end-users. Connection quality is consistently stable, avoiding the typical lag or disconnections seen in heavier remote tools. It offers outstanding value for money, reliable performance, and strong security, making it a powerful solution for modern IT teams.

Pros

HopToDesk stands out for being extremely lightweight and fast. It loads effortlessly without slowing down the operating system or consuming unnecessary hardware resources. The system is transparent, highly secure, and provides reliable remote connections, making device management and remote support smooth and straightforward.

Cons

It could offer deeper native integrations with third-party ticketing platforms (ITSM). However, for remote access, fleet management, and core support operations, it performs exceptionally well without major drawbacks.

Switched from

[AnyDesk](https://www.capterra.com/p/149595/AnyDesk/)

We switched primarily for better overall performance, transparency, and a cleaner licensing model. HopToDesk provides an extremely lightweight client with fast connection speeds, strong security, and zero lag without the restrictive commercial connection limits or high licensing costs of competitor platforms. It delivers everything our IT support team needs in a far more efficient package.

Alternatives considered

[TeamViewer ONE](https://www.capterra.com/p/194565/TeamViewer/)

Reasons for choosing HopToDesk

We chose HopToDesk because it offers superior performance with a significantly smaller resource footprint. Compared to alternative solutions, it connects faster, uses far less CPU and memory, and provides a transparent, secure environment without unnecessary background overhead or restrictive licensing terms. It delivers the ideal balance of speed, security, and ease of deployment for our technical team.

It's very good and handy, when I am connecting to my Laptop that's at my summerhome, or the other way around, when I am at home and connect to my Laptop!

Pros

It's free, and it works verry good! I mainly use it to connect to my Laptop, which is located at my summerhome

Cons

It is slower than f.ex, AnyDesk The latest version doesn't respond to my mouse 'back' and 'forward'

I used to be Teamviewer...then some others. I looked...tried many and then am now with HoptoDesk. Love what it gives me. Support is very responsive. Bugs fixed quickly. It just keeps getting better. I hope they stay free for small players like me.

Pros

The cost...the free version....which does lots. The features. Free includes the Dashboard and lots of features. Customer support is very responsive.

Cons

Still has a few bugs which I report and they fix quick. I don't like you have to request elevation. Sometimes keyboard capture is a little quirky.

Overall my experience is good. Unlike other utilities I've used I haven't had any connectivity or weird bugs preventing me from using this daily.

Pros

HopToDesk is lightweight and works quickly. It's easy to grab, run, and get going for a remote session without having to deal with installation first.

Cons

The worst aspects of hoptodesk are that, like AnyDesk before it, it feels as though the app's self-contained nature is working against it. Want to install it as a permanent host on a machine? Set aside a few minutes to logic it out because it doesn't operate like typical programs do in that regard. The second worst which they claim to be redesigning, is their MFA implementation for logins. It's a weird backwards method where you enroll the host device and then go to a website on it in order to get a code that only arrives to that device as registered. This might be fine for 2004 when MFA wasn't a requirement but in 2024 it's just not the thing. A user should be able to easily enable MFA on their preferred platform instead of being wrangled into a backwards and ultimately confusing method.
