### "Square Payments Has Been a Major Setback for My Business"

After four months of using Square without issues, everything suddenly went downhill. Square shut down my account out of nowhere and then also shut down a second business account I had with them. No warning, no explanation that made sense, and absolutely no regard for how much this would disrupt my operations. This wasn’t just an inconvenience — it cost me time, energy, and real money. One of my customers was even charged $360 in processing fees during a period when I had an active free-processing credit. When I brought it up, Square didn’t take responsibility and didn’t fix it. They consistently failed to honour their own terms and constantly contradicted themselves. The customer service experience made everything even worse. Every interaction felt like dealing with support reps who had little understanding of Canadian business practices or the issues I was actually facing. Instead of helping, they read off scripts, dismissed my concerns, and closed inquiries without proper resolution. There was never any real support, empathy, or accountability. Having both of my accounts shut down without valid reason caused major operational delays, unexpected expenses, and hours of wasted back-and-forth. If you rely on payment processing to keep your business running smoothly, think twice. Square ended up costing me far more than they ever provided.

Pros

None, seriously none, there are a lot better companies out there for POS. Waste of time, customer support doenst understand anything, never offering a single solution

Cons

Square Payments Has Been a Major Setback for My Business Save yourself the frustration and go with any other payment processor. Square consistently disappoints and has proven to be unreliable when it matters most.

### "My Square nightmare"

My Square nightmare: I have been using Square for several years. I liked the simplicity of using it, although Square charges the same fee for debit cards as for credit cards and is a point higher if you have to manually process the charge. I have been able to accept that. But after what happened to me last week, I have to speak out. Last week I processed a charge. The correct amount of the charge was $422.57, but the amount that was processed was $42,257.33 ($422.57 plus two 3s). I can’t say with certainty that I didn’t somehow hit the 3 key a couple times by accident, but I don’t think I did and I know I didn’t intend to. When I saw the amount that was actually charged I IMMEDIATELY REVERSED THE CHARGE by issuing a refund for a “mistaken charge.” (The reversal was processed 4 minutes after the charge.) Then I went back and processed the correct amount. The next morning I got an email from Square informing me that it was taking $687.41 from my biz checking account in order to cover the processing fees from the refunded charge (my Square account had a balance that Square also took, a total of $1,098.69). At first I assumed it was just part of the process and it would be refunded to my account. When it didn’t happen I contacted customer service. It took a while to reach customer service and when I did I went through 6 levels of online CSRs rejecting my request that the charge be reversed. I was told that the processing charge was not refundable and there was nothing they could do about it. I appealed until I couldn’t appeal any more (which is why I went through 6 levels). Without exception everyone was sympathetic to my situation, without exception no one did anything to make it right. All that is left to me now is to share my horror story as far and wide as possible to warn other small businesses about this horrible, unethical business practice. I’m sure I’m not the only one this has happened to; don’t let it happen to you.

They will not refund processing fees for mistaken charges (see below). My efforts to get a reversal of the fees assessed fell on deaf ears.

Overall, Point of Sale has been a great way for me to pay quickly, conveniently, and interactively up front using a multitude of digital processes. While it removes some of the human element, I feel that it's become a more convenient purchase system.

Pros

As part of the Square suite of apps and services, I liked that Point of Sale provided a digital platform and the means for me to pay using my cards or digital wallets, removing the need for paper or extra hassle at the cashier.

Cons

I didn't like the integration and confusion of tipping in regards to multi-card payments and other technical formalities of the service.

I've used this POS for over five years, and honestly, it's great. It offers a debit card tied to the account, that allows me to have instant access to funds, and if I use the transfer option, it takes one day to reach my bank account, or instant for another fee. They also offer a line of credit based on amounts processed, which is an added advantage.

Pros

It's my go to Point of Sale system for my mobile and web. I am able to use this on the go, and access it when I need to, no matter where I am. The debit card attached to the account means instant access to funds when needed.

Cons

The swipe fees are in line with other payment providers, but I wished there were different levels based on total sales. Like the more you uesd it, the lower the fees. The storefront isn't as dynamic or customizable as I'd like for it to be.

We’ve enjoyed having square point of sale. We switched over from a competitor and have found it to be a great tool for our business

Pros

We like how user friendly it is to use and the app works great. We were able to set up an account quickly and start processing right away.

Cons

I wish there was a way to edit invoices once the guest pays. Like adding an address or a start time for an event .

This has allowed our PTO to quickly collect online and POS payments at events and after a slight learning curve, it is relatively easy to maintain.

Pros

Adding and modifying items for sale is very intuitive and easy to learn. Sale transaction tracking and report exports are easy to navigate. The template for sending email campaigns is helpful.

Cons

Setting item categories and subcategories can be circuitous. Differentiating hidden items vs archived items vs visible and invisible items is ambiguous.

Easy to use onsite and as well as in the office for reconciling. Also quick payment deposits. Makes collection of payment simple.

Pros

Ease of use. We have multiple terminals is the payments are easily identified and reporting is clear. Deposit are next day.

Cons

A little more expensive than other POS but worth the additional amount. Updates can take a long time on the terminal.

Between online orders, in-person sales, marketing, and our loyalty program, it’s been really convenient having everything in one place.

Pros

Super easy to set up and use. I love how it's an all-in-one type system. Also Square is so versatile I'll be using it for every business I start no matter the industry.

Cons

I've always gotten help when chatting Support, but it's a 50/50 if they are nice about it. I do like having the option of web-based chat, phone call, or email support.

Square is a game changer for such a small business as mine. I believe that since I am offering many payment options, my customers are more keen to buy. I find it a great tool to especially when dealing with my customers from abroad, I don’t think I would be able to have them without square. Many options, great even if your business is growing fast, and at the same time very intuitive and easy to use on mobiles as well as on a computer.

Pros

Square has a lot of fantastic options yet it is still very easy to use, very intuitive and I use it from my computer as well as my phone. It’s great and gives my customers so many payment options including Clearpay and that means so much for me as a small business. I can offer so many easy ways to pay me, especially for my customers from abroad. True game changer for my business! Online terminal means that I can easily send payment links and if for some reason there is an issue with one way of doing it, Square gives me more options and it’s great.

Cons

I don’t think I have least favourite thing. The only think I maybe don't fully get is why there is a separate app for invoicing but maybe this make sense if square is the only system you use.

I was hesitant to use Square Point of Sale when we first opened our business, simply because it was available for free. I didn't think a free point of sale system would do what we needed from it, but I was wrong. I highly recommend Square to anyone that is running a small business.

Pros

As a small, locally owned furniture refinishing business, Square Point of Sale provides everything we needed to keep track of inventory, sales, processing fees, and more. We only used the mobile app, and it worked just fine for us! We are able to send customer receipts via text. We can view sales for the day, week or month. We are able to see the overall fees, and a breakdown of how much the fee was for each individual sale. We can scroll through prior sales and look at past history, which is essential for our records. Some of our part time staff was having a difficult time locating inventory by a number alone - But, with Square Point of Sale, we can attach a photo. store location and description to every item, which makes it much easier when a client is asking for something specific.

Cons

This system worked very well for us because we didn't need a lot of bells and whistles that we would end up paying for with another point of sale system. Our inventory is small, we offer simple services, and don't have a big clientele, so we never experienced a lag or down time for any of the functions we required, however - I could see this being an issue if you had a lot of inventory or a large client base that the software had to search for.

We've used this for around 6 years and found it to work for our business as we've grown and new features / ways to take payment have developed.

Pros

This is a great way to start taking card payments without the monthly charges if a smaller business. The ease of use means its quick and easy to set up and starting taking payments across all card types.

Cons

We are a mobile provider so the larger hardware does require internet access which we don't have. However we we now use the payment via mobile phone so this isn't an issue anymore.

Pros

It is easy for businesses to setup their account and terminals to collect payments from customers. Additionally, Square provides numerous kinds of terminals to suit your business needs. So if you are a restaurant or a kind of business where employees walk around to serve customers, you can use their mobile handheld terminals. Or if you are taking payments at a desk, you can use Square Register.

Cons

The terminals are a bit pricey for businesses to buy. Additionally, the service fees for credit card transactions could be lowered.

I use Square POS on my iPad Pro 12.9 and it is a great experience. I use it everyday to checkout customers and make small updates. The checkout process is easy for me and the customer to understand.

Pros

Square Point of Sale is a fantastic app which a GREAT UI/UX, the best in the industry. It has inventory management like no other and is very intuitive. I've tried other apps, and none come close to use of use or setup. It is constantly evolving to meet the needs of its ever growing community as well.

Cons

I don't have any dislikes about Square POS at this time. It is a great app. I wouldn't change anything at this time.

I am very pleased with square. My overall experience is great. The software has so many features available, which gives business owners a variety of services to choose from. Best of all, their prices are very fair for what they offer. This is wonderful for small businesses especially starting out, because it doesn't break the bank and its a very professional software. I love the look and layout of the estimates and invoices. Square has helped my company with professionalism from day one.

Pros

I love the looks/ease of using square. It's extremely easy to navigate and is not confusing whatsoever. It makes running daily operations very smooth!

Cons

I do wish their calendar section for having teams was easier to navigate. I seemed to have a lot of hiccups with this part and ended up not using it.

Overall, our start up beginning experience was not great but I believe that was more of an us issue because it wasn't as user friendly to us as we hoped BUT it did not discourage us and once we found someone, we knew also using square point, it truly helped us and have nothing but great experiences now

Pros

I enjoy the convenience of square point of sales when it comes to self-employed with my husbands business. Not everyone knows how to use apple pay, venmo or any of the other apps but do have cards and want to pay that way which can be possible with square point

Cons

It was a little difficult to get setup for us in the beginning so that discouraged us for a little while. However, we found someone we knew also using square point and they were able to help us, which in turn made our experience much better and now we really enjoy having it as an option

I only used a small part of the functionality that Square offers. My only use was for my clients from the establishment I worked at to add gratuity for their services. I do appreciate that Square is widely available and well known which provides a level of comfort to clients for using it for transactions. However, I will definitely not be utilizing Square for my own business moving forward due to their high transaction fees that take money out of my pocket.

Pros

Ease of use, well known, easy to understand, easy to see when transactions are happening and to look up amounts and past transactions.

Cons

Fees! Seems like there is an additional cost or fee for just about every feature and transaction! We added it up one time and for the amount of fees that Square took from one month of processing MY gratuity from MY CLIENTS was an entire tank of gas for my Tahoe! They are clear about the fees, and it’s not from any “hidden” or “additional” type fees, but it was a bit shocking to realize how much it added up to over time!

I really like using Square POS. I think it is a pretty easy system to navigate, with the most ease in the actual sales portion.

Pros

Square is easy to use for selling merchandise at our large events. We are able to process payments even while offline. We can use pretty much any payment form with them. It also links with our website to make merch sales all-inclusive of both accounts for tracking and inventory purposes.

Cons

I think the back end can be a little challenging at times. When you are making an item with different sizes, it can be confusing at first with all of the different options.

Pros

Ease of use- it’s very approachable for any digital native without any need for training. I set it all up on my own

Cons

The integration between square Point of Sale and Xero needs a lot of work. I spent a lot of hours correcting errors

I liked that it’s portable and available to use anywhere: at the gym, different pilates studios, at a pop up workshop.

Pros

So easy to use: plug it into your phone or iPad, swipe the card like customers already expect, follow the screen prompts and DONE.

Cons

I disliked the merchant processing fees. They were a necessary evil when the system first came out, but at this point, in 2026 there are other options available that do not require the processing fees.

We've had phenomenal experience and their customer service is amazing.

Pros

Everything was so orderly and good performing. Its ease of use and it's pricing favored us. It's the best for small businesses. It so easy to customize the menu making it easy to check people out. Create items,track inventory with the best of all. Our daily helper.

Cons

It was a little confusing to get started but it gets better with time.

I've used Square POS for over 10 years. They've made great advancement with scheduling, online sales and restaurant sales.

Pros

Square has a simple backend interface. There's also unlimited help online that's easy to find.

Cons

Limitation for online sales. Would like to see inventory management for food.

### "Easy to Utilize for Small Businesses but High Transaction Fees "

Ease of use for in store payments make checking out clients a breeze. Its mobile compatibility is fabulous for when we have our booths and the craft fairs in town.

Pros

Having no contract to be bound by is one of the top reasons we started using this as our POS system. Its is easy to use and manage in a small business setting with less complex inventory to keep track of.

Cons

It does lag on certain devices. The fees are slightly high for the lack of customization you can do. There should not be fees for online transactions. In an ideal world the fees should be under 2%. As of writing this review the fees are 2.6% + 15c per transaction. Also verifying our bank account to receive payments took about a week.
