An excellent resource for client interaction and reporting. Should be used with other documentation, but in general, a strong service.

Pros

Strong data management, ease of use, great reporting. Generates strong graphics and reports that are valuable to clients.

Cons

Sometimes hard to find Morningstar reports, and uploading info via Excel can be a bit of a challenge.

Overall it has been a mid-level experience. I have had many issues with accessibility and a whole month where I could not access the system, but it does have some decent features and uses.

Pros

I enjoy the ability to send risk tolerance surveys and get a good grasp on clients overall level of comfort. I also like the analysis tool to be able to enter large amounts of data and get comparable funds and classes

Cons

The cost is very high. My organization pays for this, but if not we would not be utilizing it. Also I have had multiple issues with system glitches and outages. The support staff are not always helpful or expeditious either.

I just logged in and none of my Clients/Groups are showing. Very frustrated and unhappy with the use of DAS vs Workstation. We are spending too much time working with Group accounts and report generation.

Pros

Being able to load a list of tickers into a watch list Being able to export this list to excel Being able to upload a statement into a new account

Cons

Client/group organization. We use only the Group to organize our clients, to navigate past the default Client view is time consuming. Your interface is very slow, going going from any page to another is very frustrating. Creating reports is very slow and cumbersome. Compliance hoops are too many to jump through.

Overall, I’ve been pretty unhappy with Direct Advisory Suite. I am still a new user, so that is likely part of the problem. I find things hard to navigate, difficult to use and support lacking.

Pros

I think Direct Advisory Suite can be pretty impactful for investment research. Being backed by Morningstar data lends legitimacy, and I have been using Morningstar reports for the 20+ years I have been in the business.

Cons

I was kicked out of Morningstar Office and that is how I became a user of Direct Advisory Suite. I am very unhappy about the toggle back and forth between Morningstar Direct Advisory Suite and Morningstar Advisor Workstation. I believe they are phasing out workstation, but the direct advisory suite is more complex and I can’t find what I am looking for often. Things just seem to be buried and unintuitive. Also, whoever decided to name two completely different programs Morningstar Direct and Morningstar Direct Advisory Suite should lose their job. If you call in for help, the options are Morningstar Direct, Morningstar Advisor Workstation and an enterprise option. As a new user of I chose Morningstar Direct (since I’m sitting there looking at a screen that says Direct Advisory Suite). I spent a lot of time talking to someone who could not help me and telling me that I don’t didn’t have a subscription to Morningstar. Why would you name two completely different products Direct? I am a new user so I’m sure I’m only using a snippet of what the program can do and I admittedly have a lot to learn. I just find the learning curve a little overwhelming and the program is as non-intuitive as you could get. I dread having to use it because I struggle every time I open the program.

I would say the overall experience using DAS has been great. It's certainly a step up in terms of coverage compared to competitors and has provided more detail on specific metrics that are important to our team.

Pros

Ease of use when building model portfolios and comparing them to client portfolios. Also, I like the portfolio risk score as it's a great (quick) way to illustrate the risk characteristics to clients.

Cons

I would say the one thing that I disliked about DAS was the excel import feature, especially at first. It wasn't overly clear how to properly import client portfolios. I have since figured that out and it's much easier.

Overall, my experience has been positive now that I have familiarized myself. It is an improvement from the old interface. The data remains the same and still does not include historical fundamentals for funds.

Pros

The interface is very user friendly and well organized. I am able to quickly access all of my watchlists with the expandable left hand navigation pane proving useful.

Cons

Learning to navigate a new interface can be challenging. It wasn't immediately obvious that I had to navigate to Screen to search for investments such as mutual funds, ETFs, and separate accounts. I still wish there was historical fundamental data on funds.

Not good. Office was a much better product. Very slow for an internet product and information is not as easy to find or utilize as in Office.

Pros

The fact that it is internet based and is a comprehensive offering. Unfortunately, not as easy to use as Morningstar Office was.

Extremely slow and cumbersome for an internet based system. Not as easy to use as Morningstar Office was - wish they would bring that back. Reports are not as user friendly as they were previously in Office.

I do quite like the Direct Advisory Suite. It has been instrumental in earning the trust with clients and winning business.

Pros

I like the ability to tailor the type of report I share with clients. I particularly like the comparison report, as it clearly highlights the key differences between a client’s existing portfolio and the recommended portfolio. It makes the information easy for clients to understand and helps demonstrate the value of the recommendation, which can be very effective in winning new business.

Cons

I would like to see the fund code displayed directly on the reports. This would make it much easier to implement the recommendations without having to go back into Morningstar to locate the applicable fund codes. I would also really value having both the Morningstar Star Rating and Medalist Rating displayed on the reports. These are very important to my business. When designing portfolios, presenting recommendations, and earning a client’s trust, I speak to these ratings quite frequently. Having them incorporated directly into the report would help reinforce the quality of the investments being recommended. Similarly, I would love to see recent Lipper Fund Awards highlighted for any funds included in the recommended portfolio. These types of independent ratings, recognitions, and awards tend to resonate with clients and can give them additional confidence and comfort when considering an investment recommendation. Lastly, I think it would be incredibly valuable if Morningstar could provide an overall portfolio rating or scorecard—for example, A+, A, A-, B+, etc. Ideally, this could incorporate factors such as fund quality, diversification, risk-adjusted performance, fees, and the overall construction of the portfolio. Right now, it can be difficult for a client to look at a portfolio and truly understand whether what they currently own—or what is being recommended to them—is a strong, high-quality portfolio. A simple overall score, supported by Morningstar's underlying research and analytics, could make that much easier for clients to understand. I believe these additions would make the reports even more powerful, particularly for advisors using them to communicate recommendations and demonstrate value to clients. I would also say that the annual cost is expensive for an individual advisor. Perhaps it should be considered that the cost be lower for a single advisor and higher for a Team with multiple advisors and associates.

Good, comprehensive reporting. Just not as intuitive as the previous version. Take a little bit of time to get used to layout and functions. We are having trouble linking the direct feed from out custodian, which makes importing household portfolio data cumbersome. Overall, the product is solid.

Pros

Comprehensive and has a bunch of analytical features that allow for detailed reporting. The investment research is very helpful.

Cons

The Direct Advisory Sweet takes a little time to get used to (by comparison to the old desktop version). What was once one or two clicks, has now become several to produce the request reporting/format.

Overall the data availability is crutial to our firm, and that is what keeps us tied to Morningstar. Many of the struggles that relate to obtaining that data make the tool more annoying to use than it probably should be.

Pros

The data availability is probably unmatched against any other product. Morningstar provides access to nearly every benchmark our firm could want. A huge plus for our firm is the availability of ESG data, and the ability to create reports containing the stats of every fund, along with category/index driven averages to directly compare to. The dashboard itself is simple, clean, and easy enough to navigate.

Cons

Adjustments to many expected or typical features are unintuitive, or dont exist. There are some basic features that are tough to find. Something as simple as quarterly rebalancing on a model portfolio - can't find it in the setup or when editing. Also, the drift of the portfolio holdings, and historical performance. The allocations of a model drift according to markets - cool. But if the portfolio does not rebalance quarterly, and you dont go in and edit the holdings on time, then you can't (or its hard and unintuitive to) retroactively change the allocations to have it rebalanced at a certain date. There are also sometimes longer than expected lags on data, sometimes several days to over a week on some benchmarks, which is usually not the end of the world, but worth noting. I've had issues with creating reports, sometimes the interface will not load. Reaching out to support usually yields a decent response time, but varies on results.

Direct was too expensive and we did not fully utilize the tools or data available to us.

Haven’t really used it much, but will try to use it more each time I sign in, especially when I look at monthly updates

Pros

The suggestions are very helpful from the ai portion of program.Boxes displayed well so it’s easy to navigate.

Cons

I like the old workstation and am really used to it. So I often hit the return to workstation button

It's been a lot to learn but as we get more proficient it becomes even more useful to track our portfolios and create client presentations.

Pros

Access to the entire investment universe. Creates great client engagement pieces to use with prospects and existing clients.

Cons

Still a bit of a learning curve. There is a lot to digest in the program and navigating the various areas can be a little daunting.

Good overall but lacking some key components that would enhance the product. It is serviceable but could be better

Pros

Ease of use and features that were available as part of morningstar office which we had prior. The data transferred over seamlessly

Cons

user interface and all data not readily available. There are some parts of direct that are not available that were part of office.

I use DAS to mainly screen for investments and provide clients with detailed reporting that our custodian doesn't provide by default. It also allows for better planning and scenario building for discussions through the planning module.

Pros

Detailed investment analytics, easy to use screener, sensible reporting options for client portfolios.

Cons

Minimal API integration options with my custodian (more of a Custodian issue than a Morningstar one I would argue)

Reasons for choosing Direct Advisory Suite

Cost, featureset on YCharts a little too rich for me as a non-PM currently.

Morningstar Direct Advisory Suite has been a helpful tool. It offers great fund analytics and research tools, in depth customization of search screens, and is fairly simple to use.

Pros

Great tool that is helpful for my business. Fund research and screening is great, the hypothetical tool is great, and I appreciate the ability to save my customs screens.

Cons

I certainly understand the challenge of this request, but when running screens prior to month end the data can feel slightly out of date. It would be great to have daily or weekly updates of the fund fact sheets.

Overall I am very satisfied. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an easy access point for data and easily research.

Pros

Very user friendly with easy access to data. Being able to filter the data easily and use the data is my favorite part.

Cons

Sometimes overwhelming with all you can do in the program. Took quite a while to learn how to use, but once I did no problem.

Overall, I find it very helpful. I find the performance tool to be very effective in sifting through some of the performance related commentary that wholesalers provide to get the "true facts" of the situation. It is not that they are necessarily lying but they are presenting their products in the best possible light and if you don't ask the right question they may omitt to fill it in. Howeve, the tool negates that.

Pros

Once you familiarize yourself with the various options (and there are a lot of them) the tool is very useful for producting comparatives as well as gettting details about portfolios that you construct.

Cons

Jargon - some items such as the fixed income style boxes are very, very poorly explained. And I don't understand that because the equity style box is well explained. Also there are some many options it takes quite a while, at least for myself, to get to a consistent report that would could be used a majority of the time. Now having that flexiblity is awesome for the special sitautions where either the client makes a specific request for some information or the circumstances dictate it.

Very well done. A great improvement from previous version. Clients enjoy the reports. Great for doing reaearch.

Pros

Value for the money. Very easy to use. Client's love the reporting. Great tool when prospecting as well. Comparing portfolios is a game changer.

Cons

Not much not to like. Cant find any issues. Data entry can be a little challenging. A mobile app would be a good idea too.
