Pros: It is pretty user friendly overall. There is not anything that really stands out about it though that I can really think of.

Cons: In comparison to other medical records portals, this one is not the most ideal but it is better than others but doesn't give you as many options or as much information as some do.

Pros: Client Support and training are excellent and patient when training clients on new products. Nextgen is very easy to use daily.

Cons: I would like to have access to all options when creating a report. All columns should be available in file maintenance for clients to create custom reports from scratch, not from reports Nextgen has pre-loaded.

Pros: You can email your doctor. You can see appointments. You can see previous statements. Whoopee, basic functionality that any software can do.

Cons: I design and implement software solutions for a living. I would be embarrassed to sell and implement NextMD. My Doctor's medical practice uses NextMD/NextGen. This software is very unresponsive to navigation inputs. When you view areas such as charts (which rarely works when you click on the View my Chart drop down), the data is not user friendly in presentation and it's difficult to retrieve. Additionally doctor will only electronically provide me lab results if I officially request. The documented instructions provided by the software vendor on how to request are totally incorrect and each 6 months I have to figure out how to do it again. When I complained to Doctor's office, they told me many people have had problems requesting their records using this software. Additionally, their approach to access "security" is the usual standard lawyer bull of threatening statements followed by their technical approach of "What's your mother's maiden name". Wow, something anyone proficient in google can find. Bottom line is from a user perspective this software is pathetic and not very usable. I find it hard to believe any medical practice would purchase it.

Pros: The software just works without trouble. NextGen also spends a lot of effort into continually enhancing the product and coming out with new releases and patches.

Cons: Sometimes the interface isn't as user-friendly as I'd like, but simple training gets around any concerns. The reporting piece just isn't up to expectation. I use a 3rd-party software to do serious data mining.

Comments: Once time and effort is put into massaging NextGen, it is a very robust and flexible system. This is probably a great system for medium to large organizations that has a dedicated IT person on staff.

Pros: Highly customizable and flexible but at a price. Client (PC) software has a version check feature that will auto-update to the latest version installed on the server. Highly customizable reporting feature.

Cons: Customizibility comes at a price - training and support costs. To get the most out of NextGen, serious training for end-user support as well as IT support is highly recommended. Updates and upgrades can be a little intense as they require technical knowledge.

Comments: If you have been with a company for 1 yrs you would expect them to offer you some courtesy and assistance in trying to move to their current "standard". Not the case. And if you have a question on support fees - good luck in getting someone to pay attention to you

Pros: If you want it to happen in the EHR, you likely can build it within NextGen. Structure allows for a ton of customization, but that too is a detriment.

Cons: See Pros - Requires a lot of user maintenance. Going with their standardized database requires an inordinate amount of time and effort. If you are on your own database and want to move - forget it!

Pros: I can think of none. I can't recall last time I've written a bad review- but nextgen is a whole new level of incompetent ehr program for physicians. Click, toggle, click, click, cycle, toggle...if you like clicking and scrolling perhaps this is the one for you

Cons: Extremely inefficient. They are suspiciously secretive when you call for info- our group of pays alot in maintenance and our "service rep" replied my emails only- with a 4-5 day waiting response. And no I go when there is a response. Biggest waste of money in my career. Leaving my group because of they have already invested too much in this software and now unwilling to change. Run...as fast as you can.

Overall: None- unless a waste of time and headache counts for the past 3 years.

Comments: I have worked with multiple EMRs and this is one of the worst. Do not buy this product.

Pros: Billing and childhood vaccines are probably the best designed parts of the EMR.

Cons: Difficult to use, poorly designed. Way too many clicks, unable to run useful reports on the simplest measures. Hard to search for old notes, lab interface is glitchy, can't follow a problem list over time, absolutely no help for chronic care management or preventative care. Did they get any physician input when creating this product? It seems to be designed completely for billing, not for charting.

Comments: Converting to electronic medical records in general is a long and tedious process. I can't say NextGen is a bad system to start with, it just still has a ways to go until it's as efficient as it needs to be for checking in patients, etc. Admittedly, most of the difficulty of using the software was just getting used to a completely new procedure. However, my biggest pet peeve was that there were multiple ways to perform certain tasks and only some of them worked correctly. For example, when adding medications to a patients' chart, there is a button that says "add medication" but when you click it, it tells you not to use that button because it won't be able to alert you of allergic reactions, rx interactions, etc. Instead, you need to click another link to view their medication list and then add afterward.

Pros: Being a user of Many Nextgen products this is my favorite. Offers solid Scheduling options with many other features you can turn on or purchase.

Cons: Although Billing if strong, the setup is a nightmare. You have to know what you're doing. Additionally, training for the entire product is needed if not you will easily get lost. The price of a system is also up there so we warned.

Overall: Nextgen PM is a well-built product. Offering an array of ways to schedule patients. There are many third party tools that play nice with it from Eligibility to KIOSK there can be many integrations into the system making the user experience enjoy. Also has a flexibility of locking down a limited number of fields if you are wanting staff to always collect specific information. It has optional tools you can purchase to enhance the experience with patients such as Patient Portal. The product is solid and is well integrated with the EHR Nextgen product.

Comments: Using the software since 2000. They are usually in the 1st wave of EMR software companies that are certified to the latest standards. You get out of it what you put into it. There is so much it can do but you need to make sure your staff is trained and continues to train as rules and regulations change that require software changes. They have a robust community of existing clients who share best practices. Internal reporting is good however the database is open so if you have staff that know SQL you can pretty much get what you want.

Pros: Interoperability - Very easy to send and receive clinical data from other healthcare systems.

Cons: Initial price point is off putting however unlike other EMR products they don't nickle and dime for every little "feature"

Recommendations to other buyers: Ask other folks what they are using. Get on their user forums to see what issues other clients are having.

Comments: There are pros and cons with any PM/EHR system on the market today. There is no one perfect solution but NextGen has made great strides to begin listening to their clients and developing their product around client needs. This did not appear to be their methodology in previous years so this shift was most welcomed. The PM side of NextGen has been fairly strong from the beginning and has wide reporting capabilities. The core application side of the EHR is intact. The KBM side of the EHR still needs overhaul in some areas, but the current items in the works show the shift in the right direction.

Pros: Reporting

Cons: KBM for Behavioral Health is still way behind the current needs.

Recommendations to other buyers: Take a look at NextGen. If you purchase, don't get carried away with customizing early on as it can become a very deep rabbit hole that is hard to climb out of. Try to use the out-of-the-box versions first.

Comments: Overall, the NG Ambulatory product meets our needs

Pros: The EHR template developer tool has allowed us to create our evals, etc.. to meet our business needs. I do however have a team of template developers on staff and manage a regular template release development lifecycle.

Cons: Data integrity issues cause our GL to not reconcile.

Recommendations to other buyers: If this product is used out of the box it is wonderful. Be careful when you start adding your own features to meet your needs. Make sure you have a test environment that matches your production environment and each upgrade is fully tested. Nextgen may not have the same environmental set up as your practice so you have to be proactive in letting NG know when something doesnt work for you.

Comments: We been on Nextgen for the last 7 years and I have to say that at the beginning we felt like 'What did we get into?" we felt totally lost. 7 years later I can honestly say that this is the best decision we made. Next gen has everything you need to help you. Web-ex, one one training, the best documentation you can find with step by step how to guides.

Pros: Awesome customer support!!!

Cons: To many known issues

Comments: We have deployed NextGen in our Enterprise environment and frequently run into situations where the standard technical implementation is insufficient. In those cases we are able to work very closely with NextGen support to customize the implementation to make it better accommodate our scaling and support needs. This flexibility, and the willingness to continue to provide support for our "non-standard" implementation is unique among our third-party software vendors. NextGen is a fantastic technology partner

Pros: highly customizable

Cons: poor tech support and response to Known Issues and reporting Known Issues

Overall: I enjoy the vast amount of customizations that can be made with the templates and allow us to use the application as we need it to work today. With the right staff in place to manage, enhance, and support the NextGen environment, it can prove to be a strong asset to your team.

The biggest issue with NextGen is the size of the company and how large their scope is--meaning the customer service is usually tougher to deal with than the application. Poorly trained tech support agents paint a very bad picture and make me feel like not reporting or getting involved with reporting issues and trying to explain why the application as a break. It appears as agents are encouraged to push everything to IDEAS and avoid reporting a break in the application.

It is a great product from my perspective, I am a Developer and can manage the environment efficiently.

Recommendations to other buyers: 1) Have a better response to broken, known issues and train tech support at NextGen to understand Breaks. 2) Grade client support and recognize when clients know more about the application than the off-shore or newly, less experienced tech support--automatically bypass tier 1 support for these clients.

Pros: Providers can save favorites

Cons: Too many links that do the same thing on one screen. HUGE amount of visual clutter.

Pros: I like that it gives good HPI for providers to work off and makes ordering medication so much faster.

Cons: some times the system is a little slow. Or if the light go out it makes us go crazy.

Overall: As a Medical assistant Ihave grown to love the system of nextgen. Has made our lives much more better in documenting. Also helping us in what the pt needs for healthy life style.

Recommendations to other buyers: Its grate.

Pros: Very little but the sales team make it sound fantastic.

Cons: Support was sold as a full service solution yet after they changed companies they tend to push support off to a knowledge base type solution.

Recommendations to other buyers: Ask for proof of concepts with real live customer references

Pros: They have recently really improved their customer support. Willing to work with you to create functionality that you need. A lot of configurability. They have really helped us meet Meaningful Use.

Cons: Everything is modular and you have to purchase separately, such as RTS, Population health , HIE, patient portal. Not only is their an initial cost but then there are added monthly fees making it very expensive to maintain. there is a bit of a disconnect between the PM and the EHR and this sometimes causes double documentation or needing to flip back and forth between the two.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you are clear on your requirements and have clarity in your contract.

Clinically Useless. Lost Productivity. Cryptic data entry/retrieval

Pros: The product support was horribly useless. The techs and their supervisors knew very little about the product. The Nextgen system itself is the real problem though. It takes so many clicks to perform the very simplest retrieval of information or data entry. The windows to see information or enter are tiny, 1 cm in height and cannot be adjusted. After a full year, our office of 4 MDs and 3 NPs (all tech competent) were still only able to see 10 patients per 8 hour day, and still spend time after hours to document. Awful. In all honesty, I cannot find one redeeming quality to this EMR, compared to any of the others I've used extensively or on its own.

Cons: The answer to the problems were always: "It's being addressed in the next version roll out". This is a half-baked EMR. It's use is a danger to patient care and a real liability. We abandoned it. The system is intended to have the clinician enter all HPI, IMP and Plan by point and click check-boxes. If these are not used, then it does not collect meaningful use data. However, the clinical utility of the text it generates is so generic, so hard to generate, and so cryptic that it is of no use to retrieve the facts of the the case. The only way to enter your thoughts, history or plan is to free text it (in addition to the mandatory point and clicks), doubling your work. It doesn't even have a way to carry over information from past notes HPI or plan, so that it can be easily adjusted.

Recommendations to other buyers: Avoid this like product. I have used EPIC, Meditech, Allscripts/Touchworks, VAMC systems in recent clinical practice. All are better than this. For me, it is an unsafe EMR.

Pros: None, not even HCC codes is updated. It does not do what it supposed to do.

Cons: Too buggy, too many pop ups and too many clicks to do anything. This is an outdated system based on local server. Every specialty has a different user interface. This is like using windows 8. The vendor failed to realize that 1 second wasted on nextgen is equivalent of losing close to 1 minutes of productivity since we have 50 providers. The system should have been cloud based. It is not encrypted so you have to log in through VPN. Any other browser would reject log in due to lack of security.

Recommendations to other buyers: Avoid like a plaque. Look into cloud based software so all the updates is done at the vendor level. The whole world is moving to cloud (ie. Mint.com vs Quicken).

Pros: It has a lot of potential, you could do a lot within the EMR if only it would work.

Cons: It would frequently freeze and loose all our data. Costumer services is terrible. We would have to place a ticket for any given problem and it would take months to be fixed sometimes, or sometimes wouldn't even be fixed until the next upgrade would come. All users throughout the different clinics/hospitals have the same software but everyone have different versions or updates. So if you have a problem and no one else has it you may have to wait down the line until they take care of your problem.

Recommendations to other buyers: At least as of now I wouldn't recommend. We have already switched to a different EMR.

Pros: There is not much to love here. See below. This is literally the worst EHR on the market. A better name would "1990's-Gen". NextGen definitely is a misnomer.

Cons: -Inefficient. Requires multiple clicks (4-5) more than competing software to complete the same tasks. -Glitchy. Often an RN will take a message and task to me, and the message will simply disappear. I had a patient run out of anti-seizures meds because of this. -Slow. Often freezes/lags in the middle of a chart, requiring you to wait for a minute or two. This is with a dedicated fiber optic connection and quad-core computers. -EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT. Once the product is sold, no one gives a shit about you anymore.

Recommendations to other buyers: Stay away from this. eClinical works, All Scripts, or Epic are all better choices.

Pros: Local NextGen support is great - the folks that are not local are not helpful. I like the adhoc reporting and how quickly my support team can work these reports up for me.

Cons: It is not very modern. A web based system would be much more modern and would flow better

Recommendations to other buyers: Shop around - be sure you find the right product for your clinic/specialty.
