I am a both a retina and uveitis specialist; I work in 3 different practices. After experiencing a significant patient volume drop, an increase in wasted time, and complete inefficiency with the EyeMD EHR software that one of the practices I worked for purchased, I was in complete disappointing about the whole idea of EMR. In the 2011 ASRS meeting, I noticed the IO Practice Ware vendor, after a brief demonstration I was almost in tears of emotion as I saw the beauty, ease and efficiency of this system. I decided to choose IO for my other 2 practices and I will tell you why I love it so much!!! The first thing you notice is that it is touch screen, this makes the brain get accustomed to it fast, besides the design is very logical and follows your thought; like the iPhone of EMRs for ophthalmology. The second best thing is that every piece of exam information is on a single screen; you do not have to browse through 20 tabs to find back what the IOP is. The third thing is that it handles images in the PDF format; this is extremely important. Most imaging devices can print, so IO takes a Print to PDF file and uses it as your image file. This makes the program go ultra-fast. The best part of all, you see the images in a second screen while you read in the exam window (like a radiologist). You can open multiple images at once and browse through the PDF image files with extreme speed and ease. No need to wait until anything downloads through the server. I will also mention that E-prescribing with IO is too easy, takes really just a fraction of what it takes to write a prescription with pen and pad (you can technically write a prescription in 3 seconds or less with IO). After a year of using IO I must say, my patient notes are 300% better documented. My referral letters are all on time and take almost no time to create. I am seeing more patients than before IO (this EHR is extremely fast), and my revenue per patient is up as I can now code with confidence, support the codes with multiple diagnoses (chosen by me), the system reminds you when to use modifiers. Their customer support is lovely, they will customize each screen any way I want it to make me even faster. They will solve most problems almost immediately. In summary, I would recommend this software to any retina surgeon or uveitis specialist who is concerned about losing speed or seeing less patients when transitioning to EHR. I love the fact that I use IO, I am very happy for the choice I made. I feel that I have purchased a superior product.

### "MVE is extremely slow. They need to update their server (so my IT guy says )"

May 16, 2019

2.0

I went from paper records several years ago to MVE so of course I can say that having records in the computer is fantastic. We are able to market to specific customers, check our inventory count for best selling frames etc.

Pros

I am now several years into using MVE. I have spent the time to have all of my inventory and my customers info put into the MVE software so I do not want to switch at this busy time. With each upgrade I have been in hopes that MVE would have the slow problem resolved. It is worse than ever. It takes a tremendous amount of time for each page to load and to print pages. I have spent a lot of money on an IT professional to make sure I had my mainframe computer hardwired, that I had the top commercial router and that my wifi speed is at 1000. The problem is within MVE. Trying to communicate with MVE about anything is extremely frustrating. You must make an appointment to speak over the phone. I give MVE an F in customer serverice and product efficiency.

Cons

It is so Freaking Slow. I've had two different IT professionals verify that the problem is not with my equipment or my internet provider.

### "We have been very happy with iO Practiceware"

June 3, 2014

5.0

We are a multi-specialty group that had been using iO Practiceware for almost 3 years. I was initially apprehensive, mainly because of stories I had heard of decreased productivity after adopting EMRs. I have been thrilled to find that the opposite is true. I do believe this success is entirely system-dependent. I ran into a physician that had used iO Practiceware in our office & then moved out of state to a practice that used another EMR (one which claims to have the highest number of installations in ophthalmology). He was extremely frustrated because after six months, it was still taking him twice as long to enter patient data. The drop down menus in his EMR were very cumbersome. iO Practiceware uses a touchscreen system which is lightning quick & simple to use. I feel it would be most instructive to list the attributes of iO Practiceware that make it so efficient to use: -The system is well thought-out & organized. There is an alert button which allows important "notes to self" to be placed on a separate screen. For example, I use a treat & extend protocol on exudative macular degeneration patients. I have a note in this section indicating the current treatment interval for a given patient. This alert screen can be accessed with a push of a button from any other screen. -The highlights screen is very well organized. It lists the patient's previous procedures & surgeries. The previous retinal drawing is also shown. From this screen, a chronological list of previous visions & pressures can be accessed by touching the current vision or pressure on that screen. The font size is very large so that information can be seen at a glance from even 5 feet away. -A separate interpretation & report for testing such as OCT or FA & op notes for lasers can be accessed at any time. -Referral letters are easy to generate. They are sent by a simple push of a button. -The system is easily customizable. A computer savvy person can add treatment templates in a matter of minutes. -The monthly maintenance cost is very reasonable compared to other systems. -Service is very personalized. We are usually able to work with the same person on an ongoing basis. -Documentation of patient information is extremely thorough. In fact, a practice consultant who does practice audits remarked that this was the best system she had encountered so far in terms of documentation.

### "Stay Away"

January 29, 2020

1.0

The software theoretically is excellent. The company has run extremely well until November 2019. Support was then moved to Eye Care Leaders, and it quickly became worse than a disaster. First we were told we needed to update our software. We paid for that, and the installation was

Pros

The software is a great platform to all aspects of Eye Care Portal Software.

Cons

Tech Support is horrible. I have had a problem for 4 months. I have tried to call them at least 50 times. Waiting on hold for 2 hours at a time. I have never gotten through. Not 1 time. I leave voice mail messages, but no one ever calls me back. The message asks to email. I have emailed them more than I have called. Still no reply. During this time we were once hard down. Our software didn't come up at all. I called and called, but still no reply. I ended up having to restore from backup. It was an update issue, but they never called me back.

### "Manager"

February 2, 2018

1.0

Pros

It will work most of the time as a practice management software. I say most of the time, because sometimes that does not work, and payments and social security numbers are lost.

Cons

This software is a terrible electronic healthcare software. Every year we have tried to attest to meaningful use (now MIPS) and the software does not work. For example, for 2017's reporting period, we were told at the beginning of 2017 we would be able to report clinical quality measures through a registry. Then, in the last quarter of 2017, we were told to use the MyVisionExpress' CQM report. We spent hours and hours trying to get our report to generate numbers. MVE staff tied up our server for hours trying to fix errors. Then in January 2018 we were told we have to submit CQM's via claims during 2017. This is the way it has been every year. We want to avoid a negative payment adjustment from Medicare, but MyVisionExpress is not capable of staying up-to-date on Medicare's requirements.

### "Terrible service, awful experience for several years."

January 6, 2023

Pros

Clinical view and documenting the progress note was very user friendly.

Cons

Service was nonexistent. We had tickets pending for billing and software issues for over 1 year. No response for problems with software, billing, or practice management. Reports for following financials were also inaccurate and unuseable.

We are an established general ophthalmology practice located in North San Diego County. In evaluating EMR software vendors, we were drawn to IO Practiceware because of its intuitive nature, the capacity for the doctors to easily draw findings in the patient chart and because it was specific to ophthalmology. We went live November 28, 2012 and could not be happier with our decision. We did not reduce our patient flow during the early days which provided more opportunities for the staff to be trained on the variety of issues that might arise during a patient visit. We all felt comfortable on the software within the first week. The implementation team, which was on-site for two full weeks, was professional and helpful to each staff member and responsive to their questions and needs in customizing the EMR screen to meet their individual needs. We recently had a follow-up visit from an implementation manager who spent the day with us and fine-tuned our training. The work-flow for the doctor, speed with which a patient encounter is completed and the confidence in using the software was greatly improved. The staff is pleaased wtih our choice and said they would never want to go back to paper charts. Everyday we continue to learn how to most effectively utilize the software and are more confident in making changes on our own. We are eager for the release of the glaucoma tracking feature and new release of the administrative module in late spring. Since implementing the new IO customer service program in December, the wait time to speak to a help desk rep, has increased which can be frustrating. We are hopeful that this will improve in the coming weeks. Our IT team does find it difficult to speak to a "techie" as the direct interface is with the implementation manager. We are integrating My Vision Express to handle the dispensary side of the optometry part of our business. It would be nice if the software was bi-directional. Maybe that will come in the future. IO Practiceware is cutting edge and they continue to seek out ways to better use technology in the patient encounter. We look forward to working with IO Practiceware as a team to continue to improve the functionality and features the software offers.

### "Great for Customization"

May 17, 2017

5.0

Even through the changes within their organization, My Vision Express and Insight Software have maintained a strong business relationship with us, an Enterprise account. As I'm the primary contact for our business relationship, I'm very grateful for our representatives and their knowledge in the software.

Pros

Very customizable, especially if you have an onsite staff member who is advanced in SQL troubleshooting. We use the local install, so we can typically troubleshoot most issues in-house. Whenever we come across a feature that's not available to be customized, we will contact our Enterprise rep to submit the enhancement request. Great working relationship between our organizations too.

Cons

Granted, MVE has many training resources available to our company before anyone here knew what MVE is. Once we started to mold our processes to reflect our internal policies, we got to work with our rep to make changes to our processes, but there are many items that cannot be hidden (in the customizer) from our end-users. This presents the need for a lot of in-depth training that takes time and money.

### "Electronic Health Records made a little easier!"

February 15, 2018

5.0

Pros

I like the ease of using this product. The home dashboards and patient dashboards are easy to navigate through and pretty much self explanatory. The viewing options for clinic notes are convenient and easy to read.

Cons

I know there is a valid reason for this, but it bothers me that when mistakes are found after an encounter is closed you can not go back and correct it by replacing incorrect information with correct information, you can only add an addendum. Therefore, the mistake becomes a permanent part of the patients chart.

### "Love this system"

February 9, 2017

5.0

Great system for ophthalmologist!! Love the Practice management system and all the integrations for EHR, E-prescribing, claims, statements, payments, etc.

Pros

Easy to navigate the systems and everything on the patient are in one place, not 3 places!

Cons

The customer service staff is a little slow at getting back to the client. They need to have more experience in the CS staff. They did have this but changes in their staff have made it rough on complex issues.

### "Happy iMedicWare user"

March 10, 2015

4.5

Pros

The application is very user-friendly. Its has a simplistic interface similar to a paper chart therefore data entry is logical and quick. I am able to see a full load of patients without the need of a scribe. Being web browser based is nice since you can access the program from anywhere outside the office. Test images and reports integrate nicely into the chart note. Ancillary staff training is not difficult. They also are always looking for feedback from their users in order update the software accordingly. This is an ophthalmology only company which is another positive.

Cons

Overall, I'm very happy. Usage can get more complex due to meaningful use and PQRS requirements. I don't believe this to be an issue with this vendor but just the overall industry complying with the measures.

### "Easy to use EMR"

July 27, 2015

5.0

Pros

I think the best thing about this EMR is that it is very user-friendly. While I fully encourage being trained on this software as you implement it, I do believe you could figure it out very easily without much or any training. Being web-based we do get updates every so often. Many times you didn't realize that the product could get better, yet the updates often provide that. All of your modifiers for the different exam findings make sense and are practical. The newest update which included ICD-10 codes has been very easy so far.

Cons

Occasionally after an update, the software will be slow on the day the update goes "live." If you have any difficulties with your internet connection, then you can't update the software.

### "Top-notch support "

March 9, 2015

4.5

Pros

From the CEO, down to the development team, to the technical staff, the iMedicWare team has built a culture of support. They've focused on hiring specialized staff that understand the specific needs of ophthalmology.

Cons

iMedicWare is specific to ophthalmology, and the team works closely with customers on product enhancement. Enhancements often require additional training for staff and physicians. This is a benefit of the product, but requires customer resources to participate in training and support of new features.

### "Not worth consideration for busy practices."

January 8, 2016

2.0

Pros

The program updates regularly. It looks good and has an acceptable layout. It is customizable.

Cons

Poor customer service and response times. It can take up to a week to get resolution. The cloud-based software runs slow and is unreliable and goes down frequently, crippling our busy practice. My patient flow is much slower using this program, than with paper. Reports are not comprehensive. Billing in US$ vs CAD when doing business in Canada.

Lakewood Eye Physicians is comprised of 12 MDs and 4 ODs with three locations, two opitical shops, an ASC and a Laser Vision Correction Center. We looked at over a dozen EMRs with a presence in Ophthalmology. We were driven to find an EMR for efficiency and the MU incentive. We went live with IO Practiceware EMR last Fall. Unlike some of our peers who had to reduce their patient volume for up to six months, we were able to resume to a regular schedule in about two months. In addition, the providers were very pleased to have all their letters completed at the end of the clinic day. The implementation took two weeks. IO sent six trainers to us and each one of them was skilled and facile with the software. We had a one week on-site follow-up visit with an IO manager/trainer at four months which was very valuable. Their customer service is exceptionally responsive and their team follows-up on open items. If you are looking for an Ophthalmic EMR that is intuitive, does not disrupt your clinic schedule and you want to increase efficiency, IO Practiceware is worth an-depth review.

### "Management Plus"

October 11, 2016

I have been a Management Plus user for 15 years. I would say the largest benefit of this operating system is that they realize the necessity to stay up to date with the features they offer in order to help providers meet Meaningful Use requirements. Customer service is key when it comes to computer operating systems, and Management Plus has great customer service. Although there may be wait times for certain issues, the customer service representatives will keep in contact with you and let you know they are working to resolve issues when they arise. I would highly recommend Management Plus for anyone looking for a customizable operating system and a conscientious staff to work alongside you when the need arises.
