You can do OCR from files such as pdf or from pictures. It supports several character types (languages), but I've used only English. I like that after analyzing a file, it offers results in a way that it marks what it thinks is a picture, a table or something else. Besides this, it gives you an option to choose this regions manually. So if it accidentally marked an area as a table, you can easy mark it as picture and it will regenerate the output. Cons I would like to see it support much higher input file resolutions. Also, as good as this OCR software can be, it is not perfect. There will always be document parts which will be badly recognized and you'll have to update some parts of the content manually. Review Source MS Michael S. Pros I like how you can compare 2 documents at once and save to pdf. Edit scanned documents easily. I also like that it’s so easy to use. Cons It sometimes has scanning glitches. With their recognition, FineReader does an excellent job. I often need to keep the original format of the letter / book / magazine, including pictures, drawings, tables, diagrams, graphics, etc. Previously, it was all a long time and was done manually in the Word. And now, it's not the first year that we bought this wonderful program Finereader from ABBYY and life has been adjusted. Pros In a world where both hard copies and soft copies are piling up in our inboxes, the OCR powers of Abby Finereader can save the day! I love that this tool lets me convert reams of printed docs into softcopies that I can save and save in my PC. Cons The cloud-based sharing and collaboration tools are really good, however, the tool could be better at recognizing some common words. I do feel that this tool has become loads better than before! And abbyy helped me a lot, made easy my job. Pros I like the most with abbyy is that the functionalty. I scan the pages with its OCR function and i loved the watermarking of it. It is practically not necessary to edit the result. ABBYY FineReader is a great way to save yourself from monotonous work. Cons It would be great if the program could recognize handwritten text. I always turn to my ABBYY fine reader which can take care of the job by OCR-ing the text and exporting to a word document. Pros ABBYY Fine Reader is my go to OCR software. It is able to take any image with text or a scanned document or a pdf and turn it into a text document that you can edit or make searchable by text. It has always worked well for most documents that I have needed to OCR. Cons Sometimes it has trouble with documents that have tables or complex image placement or layout but this can be a limitation of what you are exporting the OCR'd text to such as Microsoft Word can't handle the layout of some documents made in a different program then printed and scanned to create an image that you later need to OCR. Abode could not do it. I used to work with them first in a photo editor. with FR I don't need it anymore. Pros FR can easily correct multiple distortions of photographed (often crooked) pages. can sometimes do this literally with a single click. This is all without losing and functionality expected. Pros This is a great and cost effective way to get away from the high costs of Adobe pro. You have most of the same functionality with a significantly lower cost. Cons Rolling this our on an enterprise scale and keeping it up to date is harder than the Adobe version.
