Also, I used to get in touch with Support and I have to say it is a very-full-quality Customer Support, well prepared and kind. Pros Easy of usage, processing batch files, a lot of different output format, standard OCR capabilities, and opening to OCR custom training Cons Output to Excel (tables are really not fully detected, even text within cells, with a lot of work to do in the end) and Word (every text appear converted in annoying frames, difficult to remove or manage at all) mostly have to be really improved to be the best. OCR must be improved very much. You have bad result if you want to recognize document in Greek (most part of diacritics are not well detected) and, with Hebrew, is literally a worst situation (you have not vowels and all diacritics). If you try to do by yourself, using custom OCR training, it's a very long journey and you don't even get a good result, and many times it's even not so clear if you are using your custom training set or not and even is really not clear why you cannot use one only feature to perform "verify" and "ocr training" in one only function/feature/action. Translator Writing and Editing Used the software for: 2+ years ### "After years Abbyy still carries several disappointing defects that don't justify it's price " June 23, 2023 3.0 It's impresses me that I've been using Abby for many years and it still carries many of the same defects it has always had; it sometimes does perfect conversions into Ms word but quite oftenly it renders a file in which I have to make many corrections before start working with it. The precisión to detect the characters has improved over the years and sometimes it can detect complex tables, which is nice to see, but regarding tables with not clear imprinted lines the program files to detect them at all. Pros That only sometimes renders a perfect conversion into Ms word that I can use to work, and I mean a file where I don't have to remake any parts of the text or recapture images, etc. Cons That it changes the page I'm working on just by scrolling, that's tedious. That's solves many of the text by putting it into a floating case box, and that's terrible and cannot be turned off. That many obvious tables are not detected by Abbyy when automatic converting, specially those without visible lines. That it fails to detect structures when converting scanned pages. That the function of detecting the headers and foots almost always fails, but instead it tries to convert as headers parts of the text that are not. Correcting all the above is time-consuming, which is contrary to the purpose of this program. And recently there is a contradiction between doing things in the main window of the OCR editor I'm doing them at the detailed window, for example if I try to select one cell to be treated as an image, it's conflicts the problem if I chose it at the main window or at the detail window, with the first one generally overriding the second. I'm now in Windows 11 the program crashes a lot. Pros I routinely use FineReader to re-tool documents sent by clients and other attorneys into compact, clear .pdfs with OCR. File sizes are typically one-tenth the size of the scanned file I received, and usually at least one-third the file size. FR can correct trapezoidal distortion and improve text qualities in other ways. The text editing tools work smartly and easily. I appreciate that FR will OCR files in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean and mixed with English. I can also easily create .pdfs from cell phone photos sent of documents, page by page. FR also converts .pdfs to Excel, Word, and PowerPoint formats. Cons I am very pleased with FR version 15, but it lacks the excellent bulk .pdf processing scripts that you can write in Adobe Acrobat; however, the FR .pdf files are typically more compact than the Acrobat files. I also liked version 12, but I was not pleased with the changes from version 12 to 14. I found verion 14 unreasonably difficult to use. I choose FR when I need certain types of image processing, but especially for the smaller file sizes. I also choose FR to OCR documents with text in east Asian languages. That is all gone by way of automation. The only hang-up to a seamless input into automation is the fact that much of it still is stored as paper, believe it or not. My firm in particular made a push to start digitizing all of our records and in this process, I learned much about OCR technology. There are hundreds of products that say they can OCR, but the fact that ABBYY can process a HUGE variety of documents, fonts, etc. , this saves a lot of time correcting the output and actually getting searchable documents onto file storage. I just hope that this product continues to develop and remains at its reasonable price point. Pros It literally helped my firm save HUNDREDS of man-hours of data entry by running all of our scanned documents through ABBYY and relying heavily upon its OCR to produce a variety of formats which we were able to quickly cross verify and enter into the accounting software. In short, the quality and intelligence of their OCR engine is tremendously accurate and fast! Cons The licensing stuff is a little TOO strict and often the remote licensing procedure has to be manually restarted within WIndows Services. We eventually bought more licenses after realizing that ABBYY will be a critical component in my firm's efforts to digitize all of our records and hard copies onto our cloud-hosted server. However, for a very small business that may not warrant another license purchase, they will quickly find out that ABBYY is quick to detect multiple sessions of the same serial code and will block both out. Their tech support is always ready to take on the challenge if I bring up something that could be improved.1 Cons While it is very effective, I believe if ABBYY allowed users to selectively train patterns, it would be much more efficient. As it stands now, training a pattern means going through many ligatures that are not problematic to get to the ligatures that truly need training. If you have a high volume of documents to work with, this is a great tool. Pros Abbyy FineReader support for almost all languages is impressive. We use many different languages, so it is very important for us to have a tool that can recognize well. It is easy to use, with the simplified interface, one can work fast, through materials. FineReader can export to different types which is also a great function. Convert document formats and make them searchable, from scanned documents, screenshots or images to pdfs and html. It is very good for creating new documents from multiple files, which can be imported in one project then exported to a new file. Cons The price is fairly high for those who don't have many documents. It crashes sometimes while scanning documents with older scanners or when given more demanding tasks, like automatic scan of multiple pages. It can perform character recognition in any language. I am amazed by all the functions that this piece of software has but one thing is so cool and I use it almost every day to help me organize papers in my office. That is "Hot Folder" - every time you add some document into the desired folder it automatically converts it for you into any type of document you want. It can be editable PDF, Word or any other combination you would ever want. It can do it! Text is recognized very well and without any errors almost every time. Cons Sometimes it is struggling with some special letters from foreign languages like Cyrillic or some letters like čćšđž and many times I found that those are recognized wrong. Also, it tends to keep layout and formatting as the original document but sometimes it doesn't work well. Also, when you are trying to manually select area for the recognition it can be very hard and tiring to do all that manually because the software didn't recognize page properly.
