Analista Programador Used the software for: 2+ years ### "It is a lightweight and easy to install database" May 22, 2018 4.0 It was very useful during my apprenticeship in data base management for being of open coding Pros What I like the most is its ability to manage small and large databases and since it is open source it does not require a license, it does not consume much resources and practically does not require configuration, it has many ways to access the database: ODBC, OLEDB, .Net provider, native JDBC driver type 4, Python module, PHP, among others. It has an official page and communities where documentation can be obtained. On the other hand, it allows incremental backups. Cons What I do not like is that they stopped publishing their updates, in a few words they stopped releasing new versions which means that this application has already been abandoned. Being open source does not require licensing, and has full support for Stored Procedures and Triggers. Supports Transactions 100% ACID, Referential Integrity, in addition Complete internal language for stored procedures and triggers (PSQL), Support for External Functions (UDFs). Virtually no configuration required. Multi-generational architecture and low resource consumption. It has many ways to access the database: native / API, dbExpress drivers, ODBC, OLEDB, .Net provider, native JDBC driver type 4, Python module, PHP, Perl, among others. Native support for all major operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Solaris, MacOS. By oter part allows incremental security copies Availability of binaries in 64bit architecture Complete implementation of cursors in PSQL and Monitoring Tables Triggers at Connection and Transaction level, and use of Temporary Tables. (That is a very complex and raw enviroment with heat, breaking PCs, power-outage, low budget, high demands, etc.) Collected some experience with other DB systems too, but yet Firebird was the ONLY engine with all necessary skills detailed before. In those 15 years: 300 DB, on 2000 PCs, used by 1-20.000 users, adding and querying millions of records >> with 1x dataloss only! (Not counting when a HDD chipset fried by lightning and they had no backup.) Pros \- single file Database ! (Easy deployment and restoration) - easy version upgrade from 0.9-2.5 in these years. (Sadly 3.0 broke the continuity... still waiting to fix it.) - nice integration into Delphi enviroment - MINIMAL installation overhead. (Perfect for mass-deployment.) =7MB - on-the-fly backup (commited transactions), N-backup - shadow file (=secondary realtime backup-file on a separate disk) - old (20y+) PC support too! (Win2000+) - no special enviroment-/installation / depencecy necessary (like .NET) - no registration required to DOWNLOAD the installer And since v3.0 stable is out >> - it can be easily scaled to handle Terrabyte-sized DBs with shared-RAM-caching. - can encrypt the communication protocol and the DB file itself too - Android supprt From v4.0: - finally introduced different "transacion timeout" skills to drop broken connections or cancel any queries running too long. With this database management system you can create, modify, backup and maintain your relational databases in a simple way. It uses the SQL language, apart fundamentally is MULTIPLATAFORMA and open source. Easy to install on equipment with minimum requirements. There is a lot of documentation about its functionalities. It is powerful and fast. You can use it with many programming languages for the realization of your applications. Excellent. Pros Database speed is great. It has the ability to handle multiple concurrent connections. Works well with .NET framework. Has fantastic libraries and great UDF support. Have worked on it for over a decade, and it is well supported. Cons Security is a bit lacking when compared to other database management systems. Roles can be better. A single file storage system could be seen as a pro or a con, depending on your business needs.
