Pros: 1- We like the accessibility on mobile devices. 2- Allowing various users to have access to specific groups has been great in terms of communication & attendance. 3- Overall appearance & ability to view information have been enjoyed by our users. 4- Search tools have been very useful (except that we cannot easily report once the search is completed).

Cons: 1- Reporting options are very limited so the data has to be manipulated through Excel. This is not easily done by most of our users, so the burden of reporting rests on one individual. It would be nice if reports could be run right out of Shelby including the data fields the user chooses. 2- We have 'snowbirds' and the use of 2 addresses is not precise at this time. We do input addresses with corresponding dates, but the system isn't recognizing them when it reports on individuals. 3- Running a list for contribution envelopes was very simple in v5. The report in Shelby Next has to be completed by exporting a list to CSV & then manipulating data. 4- In Contributions, when we choose 'Group Giving with Family', ShelbyNext doesn't default to one report for the entire family (or couple) so contributions have to be transferred, or 2 reports are created. In Shelby v5, when this option was chosen, donations had to be inputted under the "Primary" member of the family. It didn't allow us to put it under a spouse in this situation. Again, this has required 'clean-up' on our part, which could be avoided if the program was more precise.

Overall: It is a great program for database information. It is not perfect, but I don't know a program that is. Shelby Next has been very beneficial for our church, and the ability we now have to communicate with & keep track of our membership.

Good membership management for churches that need more than just the basics

Pros: It's entirely web-based, so it can be used anywhere. It comes with mobile apps for major mobile device platforms, so getting to data when not at a computer is easy.

Creating individuals and adding them to families is simple and the UI is fairly pleasant to use.

The integration with Shelby's giving/donation service works well and the software allows members to see their giving in simple, easy to view reports.

Every action by staff and admins is logged for accountability purposes.

Access to various parts of the system can be controlled granularly, so administrators and staff can see only what they need. For example, giving records can be limited so that only business office members can view them.

The system also supports groups: public and private alike, so members can self-join public groups, but in other cases can't even see certain groups. This is helpful for organizing membership in various ways.

Reporting is also fairly straightforward so staff can grab quick stats on various aspects of the membership. Reports can also be locked down according to what each staff member should be able to see.

Cons: There's no support for custom domains (e.g. "members.mychurch.com")

Reporting is too simple in many cases and there's not enough customizability for the data that the system can hold (e.g. being able to generate a report on which members are missing photos).

Volunteer management is still very limited / non-existent. Churches that need to see a high level view of which members are doing what should probably look elsewhere. Scheduling conflicts between various areas of ministry is not yet trackable.

The calendar functionality leaves much to be desired. There's some good stuff in place around being able to request availability of rooms, equipment, etc, but it's all silo'ed into the proprietary calendaring system. There needs to be support for managing events through Google Calendar or similar external systems that might already be integrated into the ministry.

There are rough spots to the UI, especially around searching, viewing member photos, and generating reports.

The giving integration aspects are nice, but I wish they were more tightly integrated. I wonder how many ministries actually use a different giving solution? Overall, it would make more sense for members to be able to give from one portal rather than having a separate offering.

I use it primarily for directory information when I'm away from the office or making home visits.

Pros: I find the app very easy to use and appreciate it's interface with other map programs. [It is interesting that I could not submit this survey because the comments in the "Pros" section is too short. I guess that's one way to hear what you want. I don't know what else you want me to say about your program: You use a nice font? It hasn't crashed yet?

Cons: What I like least about the Shelby products we have is the lack of training my staff received (and told they would get) plus the long wait my staff has to endure whenever they have issues with the Shelby Membership Program and the Shelby Financial Program and call for technical help. The time spent on hold is interminable. I suspect that there are just one or two people answering the phones. Last week a staff member was on the phone with Shelby when another called and was told she was next in line. After more than thirty minutes, she finally hung up. (Interestingly, my other staff member was still on the phone talking to the Shelby Rep. I wonder if her colleague would have talked to the same rep had she remained on hold because there was only one person answering calls on a weekday? )

Overall: Addresses of church members quickly when I am away from the office and a good map interphase that helps me quickly find members' homes.

Pros: The support! I work with a CPA who works with many churches using a variety of different programs, and he agrees that Shelby's support far outweigh all the others. Sometimes the wait can be extensive but they do answer the phone and they will solve the problem. I also like the ease of use, how easy it is to learn and train others on the program. Shelby is constantly improving their program and quickly fixing any issues that may surface. I also like the way it helps to mainstream our ministry workflow, by providing a variety of tools that integrate between ministries and departments. The integration between Membership and Financials helps to reduce work and the common errors of entering data. I can't say enough, thank you all for doing such a great job!

Cons: Must have a good internet connection to use the ShelbyNext Membership. We are a church out in the country that only gets 8Mb Service and you can tell when you use an online program, but this isn't Shelby's fault, however it's something to consider. Other than that it's excellent!

Overall: Reduced workload. Improved systems and processes. Improved ministry workflow efficiency.

Great customer service. Works really well for ministry leaders. Reports are good but limited.

Pros: Ministry leaders have easy access to member information, groups, and ability to contact them from anywhere using the mobile app or computer. Permissions are easy to customize for various groups of users (staff in different programs, volunteers, members, group leaders, etc). Data is easy to update. Features work well together to automate routine tasks--forms, workflows, online giving, etc). Phone and online support is excellent, whether it is for a quick question, a complicated problem involving multiple people and/or features, or a software fix that is necessary.

Cons: While the canned reports are good, the options for custom reports are extremely limited in Membership. With very large groups, entering individual attendance data is frequently slow. Attendance reports for individuals in a group over time are not possible in the system. For a member in multiple related groups (we track worship attendance, with each service time/location as a separate group), it is nearly impossible to get a quick overview by individual or by group.

I think overall the platform works well, but don't get notified when there is an updated feature.

Pros: I like the interactions and being able to mass email groups, just wish there was a "sent" feature to show somewhere instead of it being logged as an interaction.

Cons: Better way to organize Groups and customize the Groups finder embed for a website. Also if when they sign up, you can choose who that gets emailed too, because we have Groups leaders who don't work in the office and we would rather filter that through our administrators rather than the leaders. It would be nice to still show who the leader is when they view the finder online, but have another custom field for who that sign up goes to. The calendar embed feature would be nice if we could customize that more as well.

Overall: Helps keep us organized, but there are limitations

Pros: We did an exhaustive search of church management systems and came to the conclusion that for our church, Arena was the best choice. You can read our research here: http://tinyurl.com/chmsresearch

Arena provides a customizable solution that will flex to meet your ministry needs and goals. It offers an excellent, easy to use interface and provides powerful tools to keep your staff on task, your people plugged in, and your church moving in the right direction.

Our pastors use Arena to track confidential comments, to find the best location to launch new campuses, and to keep track of thousands of people and programs.

Arena offers the most options for children's check-in, with one official solution and three church-developed solutions providing check-in that meets almost every style and desire.

Arena offers a development program provides ways for your church to develop modules and applications that meet your exact needs.

Overall, we love Arena and we made the right choice.

Cons: Arena is not for a church that isn't clear on what they want to do or that does not have IT staff. The best Arena implementations are ones where the church has a clear leader in charge of the project, and has solid direction from the staff of where they want to go.

Having a developer on staff (or a volunteer) is not necessary, but makes arena even more customizable and flexible.

Overall: Do your homework. If you have the right staff and environment in place, Arena is an amazing option. HDC has benefitted immensely from Arena and has never looked back or second guessed our decision.

I greatly enjoy using Shelby Next Membership. It is a wonderful, user-friendly program!

Pros: I have been told by the people at Shelby that it is a very literal program. Once I fully understood that it has made using Shelby Next Membership so much more effective. I am learning to think like Shelby and it is helping me use all of the tools Shelby provides in a way that is beneficial to the goals we have for the program.

Cons: I am not pleased with the photo capabilities of Shelby Next Membership. Shelby V5 had better capabilities - providing a way to add two types of photos to each person's record.

Overall: It helps us as maintain our records of members and non-members in a most efficient way.

Pros: Be able to have membership database was one of my favorite. Create the group for your bible study. Connecting with members and send their giving statement via email or mail.

Cons: So many features to learn but overall this product worked really well in long run. Keep finding a way to simplify the software will be helpful. Also not be able to edict automatically giving is a little challenging but it is manageable.

Overall: Membership database and communicate with members is the key to this software. Highly recommended if you want to follow up with your member with new technology cutting age

Pros: I love the child check in and security feature. I like the fact that you can check in your children and the ease with which we can contact parents should an emergency arise. I also like the room reservation, calendar and mass communication features. Shelby does a great job of allowing so many different and effective uses of their software.

Cons: Customer service can be slow to respond and often when they do, they assume the user is the problem first. There are sometimes glitches in the system as well that you have to call about or wait out.

Overall: The best benefit is the ability to communicate and plan between our departments in a larger organization (1000 plus)

Pros: I like the sharp look and the easy navigation to track members and create reports. I also enjoy having an app on my phone.

Cons: I don't like that when I have a ticket submitted for any areas of modules and I never get to hear the outcome of the status or the fact that the calendar is not doing what it's suppose to do and relying and trusting it will be fixed. Here I am 6months still waiting to get the malfunction fixed from software dept but no time frame when this will get fixed.

Overall: Communication with our staff and congregants. Being on the same page with one another inputting information and receiving data to keep our organization healthy and accurate.

good software for registration for events

Cons: Working in Children's Ministry, we frequently need to send emails to parents, but there isn't an easy way to do that without creating a list. You can't do it just from an event sign-up or from a list of kids. You have to create an excel worksheet to do that.

Pros: Cloud based that can be accessed anywhere. Mass email works well for my group leaders. I like the constant updates and improvements.

Cons: Groups is used for both classes/groups and profiles. Checkin and wireless printers didn't work too well. We had to go with another child checkin system. When entering Notes, you can't search for them accurately. Shelby Mailroom should work to update zips and validate addresses in the software instead of a stand alone.

ShelbyNextMembership is a great easy professional tool for keeping track of church members.

Pros: Intuitive, easy to work in program without formal training. Groups are working well for us. Workflows are a good idea - not totally functional. Interactions are a good idea also.

Cons: Lacking in MANY basic features. There is no way to mark a bad address. You have to put everything in a group to be able to manipulate. Email support system has been very poor. Most frequent suggestion from them is to call the support center - which means a 20 plus minute hold time.

Overall: The transition was relatively smooth, but we have since had to go to each entry to fix migration erroros.

Pros: The software is very versatile. I like the many reports that are available to print. It is easy to make changes when there is a giving error. Training new users is a simple, understandable process.

Cons: The system does not like it when your key strokes are to fast. That slows down entry. When searching for members they sometimes do not automatically pull up based on last name. I often have to enter both names. Time consuming.

Overall: Our contribution statements culminate much quicker than our old system. Changing entries, even old ones are easy to do without consequence.

Comments: Our church has used Shelby v5 and recently made the switch to Arena. It is NOT user friendly. As a children's pastor the component I need to be the most solid is check-in. It is not! With only one Funtime Arena administration and one IT person, neither of which are computer code wizards, we are left to try to wade through computer programming that is well beyond our skill set. Most frustrating are the features we grew accustom to in v5 that are not available in Arena, althought they claimed to be. While it may be a powerful tool in the hands of a Computer Science professional, it is not for tech savvy church leaders.

Pros: Follows in the history of Great Product and Service/support from a great vendor.
I haven't found anything that I cannot accomplish (create or make available) for any staff members.
This web savy product leads the way for churches in this web based world.

Cons: Needs better connection with V5 Shelby. The membership links are horrible and create more problems that they are worse. This feature primarily needed for contributions history. Need to have the ability to analyse contributions out of the box like we had in v5. Include a similar choice of statment format type systems.

Overall: Its "The PRoduct" to own. I believe the best on the market. Your company sets the standard for customer service.

Pros: Ties everything related to a church together

Cons: Doesn't work almost half the time

Overall: We used Shelby for years but never to its full extent. When we decided to get a little more training, nothing seems to work 100% of the time. Its always little things like Check-In won't work or a member can't be deleted but can be made inactive. Much of this was due to user error, but tech support isn't very much help. On top of all of this, the interface is from 1995 and has never ever been changed. Perhaps the move to the online version will be better.

Recommendations to other buyers: Go to an online version of either this or another. Database standalone software is soon becoming obsolete and moving to online-based.

Comments: Shebly Next Membership/Financial has potential but stay away for a minimum of another 1-2 years. They launched prematurely and has bugs, very limited capabilities, and a very limited staff to fix the issues. I think it will be a great product but I would recommend staying away until they can get it working properly. We have used V5 for many years and loved it but are very disappointed with Next. When we find issues they put it on a "list" and hope that some day it will be fixed by the one coder. The trainers are still in "training" and if you need support for an issue get ready to wait. Loads of potential but not ready to be live.

Very Flexible System

Pros: Arena is completely customizable. It allows us to have a system that meets our church's work-flow rather than dictate our processes.

Cons: Because it's soo customizable certain areas (check-in, small groups and reporting specifically) are more difficult to implement. Also, the software requires staff with extensive server experience in a wide area of focus.

Overall: I would recommend Arena if a church has enough IT staff to man the implementation and host the servers (including bandwidth for the website, online giving, event registrations, etc.)

Comments: I just wanted to point out that ShelbyNext is a new product line and the reviews before this date apply to Arena. We use Arena and everything below is generally accurate for it. However, ShelbyNext is designed to be much simpler to implement especially for churches without tech-savvy staff. I'd love to hear some reviews from people using ShelbyNext.

Somewhat of a downgrade from older versions of Shelby.

Pros: Cloud based software. Phone app allows me to have access to church membership info while I'm out and about.

Cons: Check in module is far more difficult to use for church members. More steps. Takes longer. Frustrating at times.
