“In general Avalara has been a great product. It saves us a great amount of time every month.”

OverallAvalara definitely saves time and money by automating the sales tax. As well as keeps us in compliance, as I could not keep track of the sales tax we owe in every state when tax rates continually change.
ProsYou don't have to think about it. Once you get it set up, it runs smoothly on its own and only requires a monthly review to tie out to your GL. Having Avalara remit sales tax on my behalf is a great option.
ConsThe software works great. We have had issues with the Cert Capture add on. Which can be very confusing to use. Also setting up reminders on the cert capture side is challenging, and the email directly to customers from Cert Capture is a confusing process for both the administrators and the customers receiving the requests. I would also like additional stability with our customer rep. We are on our 4th customer rep in about 18 months. Along with changing reps, our contract is not reviewed and we have been overcharged. This last fall our overcharging went on for about 4 months and then took another 3 months to get the cash/credits back from Avalara. I also would like Avalara to have a better integration with Amazon. I end up having to import Amazon transactions into Avalara every month, with is always a challenge.

“Watched this company go from great to terrible”

OverallMulti district/state tax calculation made easy.
ProsPlatform is flexible and mapping is intuitive, even for complex tax situations. Easy integration with Magento Enterprise.
ConsReports are difficult to run. Its more complex than it should be to add manual transactions and the UI needs a considerable update. But my biggest complaint has been in the lack of customer service. It has regularly taken WEEKS for our customer service rep to respond to my emails. And when I showed the "Customer Experience Manager" at Avalara the chain of emails that shows it has regularly taken weeks, I get no apology and refuse to honor my request for a new customer service rep to take over my account. They are forcing me to work with a rep who has failed to perform. That is simply unacceptable. I have recommended and installed Avalara, Ava Tax, Ava Reports for several organizations over the past 10 years and initially they were amazing to work with. I feel saddened that I can no longer recommend them due to the decline in their customer service.

“A great resource for sales tax calculations”

OverallOverall, I am very satisfied with Avalara. It has connectors to the software and eCommerce sites that I need, and with those, setup is quite painless.
ProsThe software works great. Once you have it set up, it runs in the background and involves almost no review. I know we are always charging the correct tax rate and with the tax return processing, I know my returns are being submitted correctly and on time. With exposure in most US states, staying up to date on all tax changes and filing individual returns would require a small team to keep accurate. With Avalara, we set up the states and localities we are in and the software takes care of the rest.
ConsWhen questions do come up, customer service could do a better job. I have also had our individual customer rep changed on us multiple times in the last year, which is frustrating. I have also experienced billing issues around the time of renewal each year, which can take up to 4 or 5 months to get resolved.

“Tax calculations made easy”

OverallAvalara saves us a lot of time by keeping track of all the sales tax rules based on products, customers, zip codes, tax exempt certificates. We just need to setup the states where we have business in, the products and upload the tax certificates and Avalara makes the rest.
ProsAvalara makes tax calculation easy for each of our sales order. We no longer have to be too much concerned with the right tax rates in each of the states and counties we have business in because Avalara update those rates every time a tax rule or tax rate changes. Each time I need to research when a tax calculation is wrong, based on the user's input, I found that Avalara is correct and that the issue is related to something the user is missing to take into consideration.
ConsThe only dislike that I have is that Avalara support takes a lot of time to get back to you. I always end opening a support case thru e-mail, chat and phone, so I work with the one that answers the fastest.

“Great Service”

OverallGreat experience overall. Software if easy to navigate. If you have a question they are fairly quick to get back to you and provide specific support.
ProsEase of use and navigation of support questions. There is a lot of capabilities in the system depending on your business structure. Any questions that you might have about using the software is available for non users in the support search.
ConsSupport emails. Blocky and convoluted, they notify you if there is a support request made. They become hard to follow with the generated support number and when the request has been elevated to another department or specialist. I mostly just archive the emails without looking at them as they tend to be redundant (which has had me miss some important emails unfortunately). Would benefit greatly in cleaning up the email format.

“Takes the hassle out of filing taxes”

Pros- Portal is easy enough to navigate. Lots of training and tutorials provided - "Set it and forget it" .. well not exactly .. you still have to monitor and reconcile monthly to ensure everything is running smoothly. But saves a lot of time logging in and figuring out how to file taxes monthly for each state. - Reporting is very transparent. Easy to download reports, and compile and save info for auditing purposes.
Cons- Use Tax functionality is not fully automated for all software. We use NetSuite, and there's no way to capture Use Tax on Expense Reports so these must still be entered into Avalara manually. - Customer Support is sometimes lacking. It takes forever to get a hold of someone on the phone, and when you do, many of the times the case just gets escalated to someone else so no immediate help. Also, they may point you to an article online that you've already found by Googling on your own.

“Tax Cert Organization for any Sized Company”

ProsI use Avalara's CertCapture program for filing all of the tax certs my company receives. If you are still keeping physical copies, you need to consider this. CertCapture allows the user to assign account numbers and names to every cert uploaded - it also allows expiration dates to be set. A report is processed every couple of weeks to see which of our customers will need to send in updated paperwork. Then an automated email and fax are sent, reminding them what certs are needed. Staying in compliant is one of my top priorities and this allows me to do so with ease.
ConsI am honestly struggling to think of anything negative to say about this software. We currently use Vertex for our tax calculations, i would like to start using AvaTax though. I work for a large corporation and from what I've been told AvaTax doesn't meet our business needs. I would like to see that change in the coming years.

“Great tool for eCommerce, but error messaging sometimes unclear”

ProsWe love how AvaTax automatically calculates and reports on sales tax - there don't seem to be any competitors that can do it as well as Avalara does. The Magento extension works perfectly and we run into issues only occasionally.
ConsWhen we do run into issues, it's either because the data coming in to AvaTax is garbage data (not really their fault), or because of random matchback issues related to tax product codes and address verification. For the latter, the errors are really not verbose enough to solve the problem. Manual reposting of transactions isn't very intuitive when you have to fix errors/mistakes on an order without literally logging into AvaTax and creating new records.

“Full service sales tax solution - Saves a lot of time!”

OverallLots of time saved, peace of mind regarding rates charged and filings.
ProsThe website is fairly easy to use once you get used to it, including the Avatax and Avacerts websites. Integration was relatively painless with Netsuite and was mostly handled by the Avalara team. No having to worry about rates being correct. With the filing service no having to worry about tax filings.
ConsThe software is fairly expensive, and there are no like-for-like alternatives on the market. Some of the tier breaks are strange (specifically with the certificate capturing portion). Doing a few things isn't as intuitive as it could be, such as taxing a regularly exempt customer one time on a specific order.

“Avalara overpromises & Under-delivers”

OverallTERRIBLE! There are a lot of configuration issues that we had discussed in the pre-sales cycle (like CertCapture integration, configuring marketplace facilitatort exceptions, etc.) these were all ignored and never were addressed by Avalara when we went live. Tons of issues, then their customer service doesn't respond to cases for weeks at a time. Just a really horrible customer experience. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
ProsI liked that it integrated with all of our platforms (i.e. NetSuite, Magento and future state Shopify+) and the quoted price came in much lower than other comparative software solutions.
ConsThe setup is not intuitive. There are tons of issues where it doesn't calculate sales tax correctly or at all for some states or on returns. There are multiple different logins for different services/features (i.e. AvaTax, CertCapture, General Avalara account) which are frustrating. Also had a number of issues with our NetSuite integrations. CertCapture required us to manually upload each state certificate for each customer, then manually review and validate each one all over again. You select a state, then it doesn't select a Country and errors out, but never asks you to enter a country.... There's are just a whole lot of things not to like about Avalara. There are a lot of configuration issues that we discussed in the pre-sales cycle, then were ignored and never addressed once we went to implement. Implementation shhTheir customer service is

“Great product...poor performance in QBO”

OverallSupport has been mediocre. The current issue is on it's 4th month with no anticipated resolution timeframe. In the meantime my client is paying me to manually enter these and reconcile Avalara to ensure that the system reports the proper totals as well as to educate their support team. I feel bad that they are paying a lot of money for a product that is not functional...to my knowledge, all of my requests to get them a credit for their inconvenience and the product issues have been ignored. As the title states, a great product "in theory", but it needs to work! Sales Tax is nothing to screw around with.
ProsAvalara has a great concept if it works as designed. Auto-calculates sales tax based on address, ensures updated tax rates, filing assistance for multiple states...it really is a business owners friend...in theory.
ConsUnfortunately, Avalara does not work well with QBO. There seem to be many bugs experienced with QBO. We have used Avalara with QBO for over 1yr and seem to be their guinea pig to alert them of issues. Currently, Avalara's connection is preventing us from saving and updating invoices in QBO and is not posting tax to the Avatax console for approx. 50% of our $2mil/mo client. We have to manually enter each invoice into Avatax to ensure that the proper taxes are paid. Unfortunately, if we need to update a class, memo, email address or any other aspect of the invoice (not related to ST) we cannot update those 50% of transactions. After support reviewed the issues multiple times, they tried to blame the issue on QBO. But when we disconnect the QBO from Avalara and try to do the same transaction - it works...so Intuit has confirmed the issue is isolated to

“Couldn't do it without them!”

OverallIn the wake of South Dakota v. Wayfair, Avalara alerts us if we have nexus in a new state. This is a priceless benefit. Also, Avalara was instrumental in helping us comply with a Tennessee customer's request for a multi-year sales tax refund. Thanks to Avalara, we survived the experience without hiring additional labor and the customer was satisfied with the outcome.
ProsAvalara keeps up with all the nationwide changes in taxing jurisdictions month-to-month so we can focus on our business transactions and not struggle with tax compliance. They operate seamlessly in the background and keep us accurate and exposure-free.

“I have Avalara integrated on 2 of my online Bigcommerce stores.”

ProsAs with most Bigcommerce integrations, setup was super easy. Signing up for an account and a couple clicks and you're good to go. Calculating sales tax/setup on the backend of an online store can be time-consuming if you don't have Avalara. I do not use the software to do any tax return prep or reports so the version I use is completely free. You can't beat free for a no hassle sales tax calculation experience. State laws change and it's nice to have software that keeps my stores up to code.
ConsI cannot think of any cons to the software. It is free and truly takes the hassle out of calculating state sales tax for all my customers. If you are looking for a software to take care of all of your sales tax needs, such as reporting, you might be able to find cheaper alternatives.

“As my company expanded into multiple taxes, having AvaTax was essential to managing sales & use tax.”

OverallThis headache is almost entirely outsourced to specialist. We concentrate on our core business instead.
ProsOnce implemented, it is simple to use both for the administrators and our customers. AvaTax has covered a wide gamut of situations that my business presents. The software itself is thorough no matter what jurisdiction or product/service is sold and the product help desk is quick, user friendly and complete.
ConsThe integration with our ERP software and e-commerce website yields a frequent rounding issue on the customers' invoices. Not blaming AvaTax for the issue, but neither AvaTax nor our ERP have the flexibility to address the problem.

“Avalara Cert Capture”

OverallThe Avalara system has been very beneficial in the tracking and uploading of tax certs for all of our customers. It has also proved to be a very efficient way of pulling certs during audit reviews.
ProsUploading tax certs and searching for tax certs within the system is very simple
ConsThis isn't really a con. Currently we have not used the reporting function or the request for information function. It isn't as simple and takes a lot more time from what we have been told. The instructions we received were very detailed and seemed a bit complicated. I will be able to better score this once we have a chance to actually work with it.

OverallAvalara Avatax for SAP is one of the key add-ons that our users use to get their job done on time.
ProsUsing the add-on for SAP has made tax calculations something that our users don't ever worry about when performing their work in SAP.
ConsCustomer services is a bit on the slow side. We have a user that occasionally calls for support and waits nearly an hour before getting service.

OverallExcellent sales tax program. Top of the line glad we went with Avalara back in 2015. The support group is well versed on trouble shooting and resolving issues. I would highly recommend Avalara to any other company that is looking for a sales tax program.
ProsThe software has the ability to capture from start to finish with taxing the invoice to remitting the returns to the state were we collect sales tax.
ConsWould like to be notified if Avalara stop taxing on invoices instead of finding out after the fact. This could be on the connector side, but still to put in place even an email to let us know.

OverallGood quality people, expertise and concern with perfection of product. We were a bit oversold on connectors, etc.
ProsThe automation of getting correct tax rate for multiple states in which we do business. I think it is a valuable resource and good value for the money. There's no way we could keep up with all the laws and tax rates and keep our software updated accordingly
ConsWhen working with Support, they assume that I am a software person. I'm the accountant and often don't understand their techno lingo. This is very frustrating. Also, there seem to be frequent issues with the Avalara software not communicating back with my software, causing posting issues. This is frustrating as well.

“Excellent Service”

ProsAvalara has saved our company so much time and hassle with sales tax. Our company does business in all 50 states and it is hard to keep up with the changing tax rates. Having Avalara by our side gives us confidence that the taxes we are charging the customer are correct.
ConsAvalara has grown a lot since we started using them. Our company was one of the first. For a while, it seemed as though it was taking Avalara a bit more time to respond to our requests and inquiries, but the company has added more staff and the response rate has improved.

“Say Goodbye to SALT Problems! ”

OverallThe Wayfair decision created a gaping maw of taxation liability for clients. Avalara single-handedly saved the day- can't imagine using or recommending anything else.
ProsLegal and accounting fees plummeted, Avalara did (almost all of) the work for us. You can simply update the tables if you need to modify anything! I also like the collateral effect it has produced- because we all rely on Avalara we all inherently follow processes to ensure the proper use of Avalara. It is functionally the enabler to nationwide sales and a must-have for any business trying to do the same.
ConsMore support is available, but costs more. Reminds me of the old Microsoft model (maybe still current model?) and it can be very irritating. If you have a tax problem, the last thing you need is more costs and a wait time. Notwithstanding, the documentation and Help Center gets you a long way, if not all the way.

“Difficult to Setup”

ProsMakes tax collection and administration more streamlined, puts the burden into the hands of those at Avalara.
ConsThough the program is "administered" by Avalara, they make it very clear that they will not provide advice for tax setup and implementation. If you are not well versed in tax laws, you will have a hard time figuring out how and which apply to you. Customer service has very long wait times.

ConsI wish the address field could be more dynamic in our use of the product. As our product is tied to our ERP the addresses must be set up for use and as such that is good, but if the step was combined it would save time.

“Customer Service is Horrible”

OverallMy company and I decided to outsource our sales tax filings in the 3rd quarter of 2018 in the wake of the impactful "Wayfair" sales tax ruling. I have to say that our experience thus far has been wholeheartedly disappointing. It is a textbook case of a vendor over promising and under delivering. Avalara failed to support us during the implementation period in that we could not even reach our implementation specialist for nearly a month after contracting with them! We were reassigned a new specialist who was very hands off and over promised their ability to reach our go live date. In addition since we went live we have been passed onto 4 different account managers in 7 months, only one of which seemed to particularly care about our account. Sadly he has since moved on. They disavow mistakes and responsibility for failure to register their clients in the requested states and their customer support consists of sending you dozens of links to their online handbook. If you are looking for sales tax help I HIGHLY suggest your company look elsewhere.
ProsNot much really. It is mostly out of necessity that we must use Avalara otherwise we would be spending days just filling out state sales tax filings for our monthly sales.
ConsThe software itself is not terribly bad; however the customer support is atrocious! If you have any questions it may take days or weeks for someone to get back to you (if ever).

“Compliance Made Easy”

OverallAvalara has simplified the process of handling taxes across the country as well as helped with PCI compliance. I would recommend this to anyone looking.
ProsWe used Avalara as part of our PCI compliance. This made it incredibly easy to be compliant as well as calculate the taxes for all the areas we sell to customer in. This can be incredibly complicated to handle on your own and Avalara simplified this process.
ConsWe occasionally have had issues getting quick responses from customer service. This isn't necessarily a knock on the product, but it is something to be aware of.

“It does the job”

OverallOther than the occasional slowdowns that can be monitored on their status website, it works well for us.
ProsOur Sales Platform uses Avalara for sales tax calls, it works pretty well. It wasn't to difficult to setup and we have pretty much 1 person who manages our tax settings and accounts.
ConsIt can get pricey. They charge by the "tax call" so our sales software that by default calls to Avalara each time the sales document is saved can lead to some higher rates. Luckily this can be turned off.

“Too many bugs for QBO”

OverallST filing on the client's behalf....if it captures the correct data.
ProsThe concept of Avalara is good...calculate sales tax based on ship to address, file returns for various states. Avalara is the ST experts so internal knowledge does not have to be CPA level.
ConsEvery time you save, email, update sales rep or make any change to an invoice in QBO, you get charged for using the program (even if it's not impacting the $ amt or ST), items were all being charged tax regardless of how the item is setup (resolved in Mar18), Customer support is very useless until you can get to tier2 or engineers when you have a REAL problem, program bug resolution is very slow (still waiting on resolution to invoices that Avalara decided to update tax on invoice after the ST was filed and "should have been" locked, and countless others. The accounting partner team is the only group that has been helpful in getting anything resolved or fixed. Unfortunately, they cannot resolve back end issues. I've given them many chances to resolve my clients' issue. Avalara charges for estimates that are generated in QBO (no option to not be charged). Then if you use another 3rd party program that feeds invoices to QBO, your invoices have the Avatax verbiage from the estimate on them. If your invoice is not "resaved" in Avalara then the tax portion will properly be billed to the client but will not show up in Avatax console unless you re-save the documents. As an Advanced QB ProAdvisor who works with multiple companies and 3rd party programs, I would recommend to use caution if using a 3rd party program with QBO and Avalara.

“AvaTax works great for us in automatically figuring taxes on quotes.”

OverallThe automation of tax for every applicable quote that we produce and send to our prospects and customers.
ProsThe fact that it is automatic. My sales reps don't have to think about it...it just adds the appropriate tax for the applicable states/counties. We use a quoting system from Connectwise and AvaTax integrates such that we can see the specifics of any tax associates with our quotes. Most of the time however we don't look at anything...it just shows up on our quote when we publish it to the customer. Great product for our purposes!
ConsI don't really have a "con" for the product. It does exactly what we wanted...and were told...it will do.

OverallOverall, I've had a great experience. I've got a great customer service rep who has been nothing but helpful throughout the entirety of my experience with Avalara.
ProsThe software is mostly plug and play. Once it's installed, there's little to worry about afterwards, which is great because SALT is only a small portion of my job responsibilities!
ConsThere's been a couple of items where there's a tiered rate within the state however the base rate pulled through to charge to the customer, causing us to override. However, customer service has been a great help and I hope to have that issue resolved shortly.

“Avalara One Stop show for Tax Reporting”

ProsAvalara software is very user friendly and compatible with most accounting programs. The communication when issues arise with customer service is world-class and very efficient and concise. Overall ease of use is great and interface with NetSuite allows us to verify and input tax certs fast and efficiently.
ConsReporting could be faster when the month is over but overall this is an issue that can be addressed with time.

OverallOverall, the experience with Avalara has been great! It's much easier for us to manage our sales taxes through Avalara and saves us a significant amount of time.
ProsSoftware is very easy to use and setup was also very simple. Resources have also been helpful, lots of information provided regarding implications of Wayfair case.
ConsWe have some manual steps for Canadian returns which we don't have on the US side. It would be nice if it was as seamless as the US returns.

“Avalara makes sales tax a breeze, especially when dealing with tax in several states.”

ProsI like how easy it is to use. There are little help buttons that will walk you through anything you need to do on the website. Also, customer support is very quick to respond to any issues you have.
ConsLately I have had a problem with Avalara not being consistent about when they charge tax on shipping or not. So then I don't know whether to set up my online accounts to collect tax on shipping or not in the states where we collect sales tax.

“Sales Tax Made Easy”

ProsBefore we used Avalara services, we would manually update the sales tax rates for all of the states we were doing business in (over 35). Not only did we save time with Avalara, the rates were up to date and accurate for the individual placing their online order. The team at Avalara are great to work with - super helpful and friendly!

“Horrible Customer Service”

OverallVery aggravating. Don't expect to be treated like your problems are important, even if you're a multi-million dollar company paying way too much for this software. As someone who frequent reads product reviews for our business I take customer service complaints with a grain of salt. Usually someone has one bad experience and uses that to represent the entire company. I'm writing at the end of a pattern of neglect and hold music. Literally the best part about this whole experience is the hold music reminds me of a video game I played when I was 14 years old. You hate to see it.
ProsNot much. The integrations are a huge pain to set up. It's what I would call a necessary evil for our company in lieu of ever increasing sales tax complexity.
ConsThe customer support. We're multiple months into having the same type of order's tax miscalculated and I'm still fighting to get any help on it, meaning hundreds of orders are being charged incorrect sales tax. On top of not getting replies to my emails every time I call the robot voice says I'm 20th or 30th in line, guaranteeing a minimum 30 minute on hold session. In a day and age where SAAS companies are starting to see the importance of quality customer service it feels like Avalara is either behind the ball or just doesn't care. Obviously writing this while on hold, because what else am I going to do?

ProsLove the New Query Wizard, offers ease of creating a spreadsheet based on perimeters that you define. Ex. BOL's, Schedules, Date range, Supplier, etc...
ConsCreating scenarios can sometimes be challenging. Would be nice to have more documentation to assist with this task.

“A natural companion to Avalara Avatax Sales and Use Tax software.”

ProsIt closely works with Avalara Avatax to determine the taxability of certain customers and their allowed tax exemptions in all applicable jurisdictions. It also applies partial exemptions based on specific certificates as allowed by specific local tax laws. The program maintains all certificates in their database where they can be viewed, printed or e-mailed. When a certificate approaches its expiration date we get a notification that we need to obtain a replacement and current document from the customer. The request is sent electronically from the software to the customer and they can upload the new certificate directly into our system. Like Avatax, CertCapture is web-based which means we don't have to worry about update installation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Customer service and tech support are always available and are knowledgeable and friendly.
ConsRequires additional licensing, over and above Avatax licensing fees, which can be costly to wholesale businesses where every customer has a resale certificate or some type of exemption.

ProsIt works seamlessly and I don't have to think about it. Customer service is great and once I got the hang of it, I found it very easy to make changes by myself.

“Avatax helped simplify our sales tax compliance”

ProsOur company has nexus in 31 states. Each state has different forms, requirements and rates. AvaTax helps us stay in compliance with each one. It saves us a tremendous amount of time. It computes sale tax with the most up-to-date rates.
ConsOur accounting software is Sage 500 with customization. Implementing Avatax was tedious and involved a lot of time.

“A good product at a decent price.”

OverallWhen it comes to calculating sales tax for a company at scale, I can't think of any other product I would use.
ProsI've used AvaTax with two different companies and have found it to be relatively easy to use. The software does its job, and I like that the tax rates are pulled in based on geolocation instead of just state or county.
ConsSome of the user interface changes in the most recent update have taken some getting used to. We use QuickBooks Online and sometimes the connection with AvaTax can cause the program to slow.

“Business solution”

ProsAvalara is adaptable across a broad range of accounting platforms and works smoothly across all of our companies. The install teams were very helpful during the initial installations and the training modules and online support provided the help needed to make sure the systems were up an running efficiently. On an ongoing basis I find the support staff (online chats) and especially the account manager knowledgeable, courteous, and diligent in resolving our customer issues.
ConsAvalara works great in processing huge numbers returns on an ongoing basis but I think the back filing process is cumbersome and typically deal with those issues myself.

OverallDoing business in California - too many rates to master
ProsEase of use, seamless into Sage. Gives us a heads up on other areas with potential nexus. CertCapture is wonderful way to keep forms organized and up-to-date
