### "Great Sales Tax Software"

Great! We don't plan on switching softwares.

Pros

is an effective sales tax 3P system. We have had no business operations interruptions while using Avalara. It runs seamlessly in the background.

Cons

As states update their website, the business must update their logins to accommodate . This can be inconvenient - not Avalara's fault - but they don't always give proper instructions on how to set-up state accounts.

### "Run away!"

A total nightmare. If I had a time machine, I would go back to the day before I signed up with and push myself off a cliff. I would be much better off.

Pros

Once everything is set up, the service performs its basic (and very important) task: it files accurate, timely sales tax reports. If you love having lots of zoom meetings, you'll love . Nothing gets done without several video calls.

Cons

If you ever encounter a problem (and we encountered MANY), do not count on anyone taking responsibility for the issues, or being able to fix them. 's employees are hopelessly "siloed" ... sales does their thing and passes you off to implementation, who then leaves you in the hands of an account rep. In our case, none of these people did their job correctly, and they do not work together well. The sales team sold us a solution that wasn't feasible. The implementation specialist wreaked havoc in our account, and we haven't yet found out what the account rep is good for. Thankfully, there is a team of skilled, hard-working people overseas who do the actual filing. If you can break through the domestic veneer and reach the people who actually develop and run the solution, you'll find efficiency and accuracy that hasn't trickled back up to the customer-facing incompetents you'll deal with on a daily basis.

### "Avalara - the cons outweigh the pros"

This is a horrible company if you value customer service and resolution of issues in a timely manner.

Pros

Hard to find any pros. The reporting is good when it works.

Cons

Doesn't calculate tax based on the correct jurisdiction - tax will change between sales orders and invoices even though addresses did not change. The reconciliation report that is ran out of NetSuite stopped working after the latest update, absolutely no help in getting that resolved which means I can't reconcile back to our GL. When was contacted, they asked us for a "video" of what was going on. THE REPORT WILL NOT EXPORT TO A CVS.....why would they need a video???? Submitted a tax notice and after 2 weeks, contacted the Director of Customer Experience to find out why and was told "Avalara’s response time for notices is 4-6 weeks, and resolution time is 6-8 weeks per this article I found in Avalara Help Center." Seriously? According to their own website, the professional support service which we pay for is supposed to have an 8 hour response time.

### "Customer Service is Horrible"

My company and I decided to outsource our sales tax filings in the 3rd quarter of 2018 in the wake of the impactful "Wayfair" sales tax ruling. I have to say that our experience thus far has been wholeheartedly disappointing. It is a textbook case of a vendor over promising and under delivering. failed to support us during the implementation period in that we could not even reach our implementation specialist for nearly a month after contracting with them! We were reassigned a new specialist who was very hands off and over promised their ability to reach our go live date. In addition since we went live we have been passed onto 4 different account managers in 7 months, only one of which seemed to particularly care about our account. Sadly he has since moved on. They disavow mistakes and responsibility for failure to register their clients in the requested states and their customer support consists of sending you dozens of links to their online handbook. If you are looking for sales tax help I HIGHLY suggest your company look elsewhere.

Pros

Not much really. It is mostly out of necessity that we must use otherwise we would be spending days just filling out state sales tax filings for our monthly sales.

Cons

The software itself is not terribly bad; however the customer support is atrocious! If you have any questions it may take days or weeks for someone to get back to you (if ever).

The ease of entering, return submission, and access of the final return.

Cons

That EVERYTHING is a cost and nothing is all encompassing. From the customer service to the number of transactions/returns you have, each on eis a cost and it's not cheap

### "The most terrible customer service ever"

Please, please do not use this service if you can avoid it. I am a Shopify Plus member and am held hostage by because Shopify doesn't offer any other choices. If you can avoid them, you must. They are horrendous.

Pros

The salesman made seem like it would be SO easy to use & implement. They were really friendly and aggressive to tell me how wonderful Avalara was. It was all trickery. Once they got me to sign their contract, the support offered was absolutely terrible. I really can't believe that this company is still in business.

Cons

They charged me to register in 10 states. 5 of those states they then came back and told me they could not complete the registration and that I would have to do it. They never refunded me for what I paid for this. I asked at least 10 times and then had to file a VISA dispute. They change my rep. all the time and are very disorganized overall. During the first month I had to go into each of the 10 states and file my own $0 return. No one from even noticed. Thankfully I had been logging into each state myself to check on things when I saw their level of incompetence. Once there, I saw that I had returns due in a few days. Avalara didn't even know. Shame on them. I paid them a lot to help me.

### "Horrible Customer Service"

Very aggravating. Don't expect to be treated like your problems are important, even if you're a multi-million dollar company paying way too much for this software. As someone who frequent reads product reviews for our business I take customer service complaints with a grain of salt. Usually someone has one bad experience and uses that to represent the entire company. I'm writing at the end of a pattern of neglect and hold music. Literally the best part about this whole experience is the hold music reminds me of a video game I played when I was 14 years old. You hate to see it.

Pros

Not much. The integrations are a huge pain to set up. It's what I would call a necessary evil for our company in lieu of ever increasing sales tax complexity.

Cons

The customer support. We're multiple months into having the same type of order's tax miscalculated and I'm still fighting to get any help on it, meaning hundreds of orders are being charged incorrect sales tax. On top of not getting replies to my emails every time I call the robot voice says I'm 20th or 30th in line, guaranteeing a minimum 30 minute on hold session. In a day and age where SAAS companies are starting to see the importance of quality customer service it feels like is either behind the ball or just doesn't care. Obviously writing this while on hold, because what else am I going to do?

### "Takes the hassle out of filing taxes"

Pros

\- Portal is easy enough to navigate. Lots of training and tutorials provided - "Set it and forget it" .. well not exactly .. you still have to monitor and reconcile monthly to ensure everything is running smoothly. But saves a lot of time logging in and figuring out how to file taxes monthly for each state. - Reporting is very transparent. Easy to download reports, and compile and save info for auditing purposes.

Cons

\- Use Tax functionality is not fully automated for all software. We use NetSuite, and there's no way to capture Use Tax on Expense Reports so these must still be entered into manually. - Customer Support is sometimes lacking. It takes forever to get a hold of someone on the phone, and when you do, many of the times the case just gets escalated to someone else so no immediate help. Also, they may point you to an article online that you've already found by Googling on your own.

### "Tax Cert Organization for any Sized Company"

Pros

I use 's CertCapture program for filing all of the tax certs my company receives. If you are still keeping physical copies, you need to consider this. CertCapture allows the user to assign account numbers and names to every cert uploaded - it also allows expiration dates to be set. A report is processed every couple of weeks to see which of our customers will need to send in updated paperwork. Then an automated email and fax are sent, reminding them what certs are needed. Staying in compliant is one of my top priorities and this allows me to do so with ease.

Cons

I am honestly struggling to think of anything negative to say about this software. We currently use Vertex for our tax calculations, i would like to start using AvaTax though. I work for a large corporation and from what I've been told AvaTax doesn't meet our business needs. I would like to see that change in the coming years.

Cons

The system kicks you out after a certain period even if you are working in it. Annoying but Pros outweigh the cons on this.

### "Customer Service"

Overall the software works well. If there is a special project and questions or anything out of the ordinary the project will likely have problems, good luck getting a response and assistance with questions. They also tend to only want to respond through e-mail and they don't answer all questions. It is an uneasy feeling to not get responses on critical projects.

Pros

The tax cal rates are reliable and the dashboard is easy to use.

Cons

managers are slow to respond to questions and assistance. They do not provide phone numbers to anyone except the account manager. If there are issues with the account manager no one will provide their supervisors phone numbers so basically one will be at the mercy of their account mangers response. On special projects for back filing projects they have taken over a month to answer questions. When sending in notices for Avalara to address for tax return prep they are slow to respond to notices.

### "Time saver extraodinaire! "

This product has been a great tool for our company. The ease of use and the accuracy has saved us so much time. The flow between our POS and their system has been mostly effortless (there will always be issues with software). The best part is that we don't have to keep track of all the changing tax rates in all the different cities and states that we do business in, plus them filing all of the tax returns takes a huge time burden off of our shoulders.

Pros

\-Ease of use -Compatibility with our POS System -Support and communication of issues -Accuracy of collecting and remitting of taxes

Cons

They have recently "updated" their user site and so it takes a few more steps to get to where I am going, and it is a little confusing at first.

My overall experience with has been very positive, I especially enjoy all of the resources to help business understand the sales & use tax process.

Pros

is very user friendly, and makes it easy to collect & remit the correct sales tax. The various reports available on the portal are very helpful to ensure we remain in compliance. I also really appreciate all of the education and resources available, I have found all of the available webinars and articles extremely helpful.

Cons

The Support case/Tax Notice process could be improved- cases close automatically after a response is provided by support, and it can be challenging to have follow-up questions addressed after the case is closed.

### "The best of the best"

Between collecting sales tax from our customers and now calculating Consumer Use Tax, my personal experience with has been exceptional. I enjoyed the folks I worked with in the ACU area specifically. They were awesome to help me understand how the program works and be able to comfortably run it on a monthly basis.

Pros

The ease of use and the versatility of the different programs they have that are available. It's like a one stop shop.

Cons

Getting some items cleared up through support are slow, but I try to keep in mind that since the Pandemic started, EVERYONE is short handed.

Reason for choosing Avalara

We had AVATAX when I came on board with my company. I was the one that initiated the ACU. I needed peace of mind knowing that this was done correctly, especially after having been through an audit and getting nailed (on items that happened before my employment).

### "Great tool for eCommerce, but error messaging sometimes unclear"

Pros

We love how AvaTax automatically calculates and reports on sales tax - there don't seem to be any competitors that can do it as well as does. The Magento extension works perfectly and we run into issues only occasionally.

Cons

When we do run into issues, it's either because the data coming in to AvaTax is garbage data (not really their fault), or because of random matchback issues related to tax product codes and address verification. For the latter, the errors are really not verbose enough to solve the problem. Manual reposting of transactions isn't very intuitive when you have to fix errors/mistakes on an order without literally logging into AvaTax and creating new records.

### "Would be lost without Avalara"

Pros

Sales tax laws are incredibly confusing! After several years with and many questions while adding new jurisdictions and filing tons of returns, we have grown to trust Avalara completely with our sales tax needs!

Cons

The support process is not the best, though my issues are always resolved. Calling in takes forever and trouble tickets, it seems the biggest goal is to close as fast as possible which isn't always the best customer service.

Reason for choosing Avalara

Although I wasn't involved in selecting the service provider, I am confident this is the best solution we could have chosen. I have the utmost confidence in their calculations and remittances on our behalf.

There were too many steps to upload certificates, but that has been resolved with streamlining with Avatax. I don't like that it does not work well with our software, it's still a lot of manual manipulations, however, it's just our software.

### "Couldn't do it without them!"

In the wake of South Dakota v. Wayfair, alerts us if we have nexus in a new state. This is a priceless benefit. Also, Avalara was instrumental in helping us comply with a Tennessee customer's request for a multi-year sales tax refund. Thanks to Avalara, we survived the experience without hiring additional labor and the customer was satisfied with the outcome.

Pros

keeps up with all the nationwide changes in taxing jurisdictions month-to-month so we can focus on our business transactions and not struggle with tax compliance. They operate seamlessly in the background and keep us accurate and exposure-free.

Cons

I am eternally disappointed that I didn't come up with the concept for myself =)

This headache is almost entirely outsourced to specialist. We concentrate on our core business instead.

Pros

Once implemented, it is simple to use both for the administrators and our customers. AvaTax has covered a wide gamut of situations that my business presents. The software itself is thorough no matter what jurisdiction or product/service is sold and the product help desk is quick, user friendly and complete.

Cons

The integration with our ERP software and e-commerce website yields a frequent rounding issue on the customers' invoices. Not blaming AvaTax for the issue, but neither AvaTax nor our ERP have the flexibility to address the problem.

Difficult to set up and when it is not working as expected it can get in the way of processing documents.

### "Sales Tax Solution nightmare"

No response to emails, 1-1.5 hour on hold wait time to talk with a rep that may or may not help you. claimed to have a solution that would handle the general/manufacturing tax rates in Alabama and Mississippi and this was a blatant lie. After waiting 3 months we had to contract for a customer solution with our software provider. I would not recommend going with Avalara due to the horrible customer service and the fact state agencies hate working with them (and that is a quote from 5 different states). Do your homework and if you have to tax at general or manufacturing rates then find another alternative. We had a delay during implementation due to a merger and Avalara would not credit any unused tax return filings. We were billed for tax returns they never filed and then sent a bill for the upcoming year.

Pros

Reports easy to read Exemption certificate management and repository. Keeps tax rates updated Geolocator for taxing purposes

Cons

Customer service is HORRENDOUS. No credit for unused tax return filings. Web portal is not easy to navigate servers are slow to update when working on month-end tie-outs to ERP system Dropped invoicing lines on backordered items, these have to be manually entered in Avalara

It is always a pleasure to deal with everyone. They have the most amazing yearly meeting it is always beneficial and you always learn more and more.

Pros

It is very user friendly. I love the way the returns are listed and you can go in and see what the return is going to be. I love the way you can drill down into an invoice and see how the tax was calculated and it makes it easier to explain to the customer.

Cons

would be nice to have like a help file to see where are the reports are located. Or sorta like a map of the website.
