January 31, 2018 5.0 When it comes to calculating sales tax for a company at scale, I can't think of any other product I would use. Pros I've used AvaTax with two different companies and have found it to be relatively easy to use. The software does its job, and I like that the tax rates are pulled in based on geolocation instead of just state or county. Cons Some of the user interface changes in the most recent update have taken some getting used to. We use QuickBooks Online and sometimes the connection with AvaTax can cause the program to slow. When it is having issues? Causes more work. Not a good look for them, regardless of how good it is otherwise. Pros For handling sales tax calculations down to a specific country or area, it's excellent. For being precise about this, you can count on Avalara. Additionally, they have some internal calculator tools when you need to find a tax with more precision. Cons In the past few months at least, there have been quite a lot of service issues, which have resulted in incorrect tax calculations, further resulting in messed up orders, thus more work. Whatever is the issue, it is making me start to question what's going on and lose confidence in the service. The internal calculator tools for precise tax calculation is not super intuitive, so it will take some thought to figure out. December 12, 2017 5.0 Pros The product is very easy to use from calculating the sales tax for invoicing to summarizing the monthly data for sales tax filings. It is a very affordable solution. Owner Retail Used the software for: I used a free trial ### "Use with Extreme Caution" June 1, 2022 1.0 I started a free trial with Avalara and didn't have any issues with their software--I just decided to go with a different service. I couldn't find how to cancel my account in my settings so I messaged their customer support and asked if I needed to cancel or if I could let the time run out on the free subscription. The agent I spoke with stated "Yes, you can let the time run out since it is your free subscription." Their chat feature emails you with a summary of the chat so I have this conversation recorded and timestamped. A few weeks later I received an emailed invoice for a full year's subscription. I emailed accountsreceivable back explaining the situation and sent a screenshot of the email confirmation for my chat about cancelling. I got an email back advising that I should follow their link to confirm the cancellation of my account and that the bill was still due. The link they provided required that I acknowledge I would accept all payments due before I could cancel. I feel like Avalara isn't accepting responsibility for misinformation they gave and I'm being corralled into paying for a service that I made a good faith effort to cancel. It's been 7 weeks since they "opened an internal case with the support team" and would message me once they received an update. I've checked in with them since then and they didn't have an update. Because their support team is such a degree of inconsistent and negligent, I strongly recommend using a different service. Pros Automation features and variety of platforms that can be synced with Avalara make it appealing. Cons The software itself seems well constructed but it wasn't quite what I needed for my business. I contacted customer support before my free trial ended because I couldn't find where to cancel my account and they advised that because it was a free trial, I could let the free trial expire. Epicor Administrator Oil & Energy Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Tax calculations made easy" November 30, 2018 5.0 Avalara saves us a lot of time by keeping track of all the sales tax rules based on products, customers, zip codes, tax exempt certificates. We just need to setup the states where we have business in, the products and upload the tax certificates and Avalara makes the rest. Pros Avalara makes tax calculation easy for each of our sales order. We no longer have to be too much concerned with the right tax rates in each of the states and counties we have business in because Avalara update those rates every time a tax rule or tax rate changes. Each time I need to research when a tax calculation is wrong, based on the user’s input, I found that Avalara is correct and that the issue is related to something the user is missing to take into consideration. Cons The only dislike that I have is that Avalara support takes a lot of time to get back to you. I always end opening a support case thru e-mail, chat and phone, so I work with the one that answers the fastest. Review Source MB Matthew B. LIES. I couldn't believe the emails I got that detailed what I needed to do to get set up. It was absolutely ridiculous. I paid them $4700 and would still need to do the heavy lifting for getting the application set up. I expressed my disappointment to my "implementation" guide and his response was, "that's not my job" after I told him my salesperson was not honest. My partner actually overhead the conversation and told me I absolutely could not move forward with Avalara. Then I emailed my salesperson who told me to email someone else for a refund. That person then gave me an email address to message. I've not heard anything and have not been refunded yet. How is this company still in business? There are better options out there. Avoid this company and look elsewhere. Pros The only thing I like about this software wasn't actually true. The salesperson oversimplified how the app works and how to get it started. Cons The set up is absolutely ridiculous. There's no setup wizard. You literally get a barrage of emails telling to you to click links and do the steps detailed in the email. Business owners paying thousands of dollars to get started should never have to do what this app is requesting. Cons would like more flexibility in reporting. extra selection criteria fields in Avatax reports, like wanting to run on a specific customer. in certcapture, would like to pick and choose fields to print on downloaded reports. you can select on these fields, but some fields aren't on the report. Managing Director Retail Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Be very, very careful - a world of disspointment awaits" December 28, 2021 1.0 A horrendous and very disappointing experience that unfortunately still has not been resolved. Could not recommend. Their customer support primary response is “refer to T&Cs” – even if you have a question about said T&Cs When we tried to cancel we were astounded to learn you need to pay your entire 12m subscription fees for "VAT Reporting for small Business" fees despite (after 82 days) still not being registered for VAT and not being able to utilise their service. We have since learned these fees can be waived if cancelled in 60 days of contract but guess what? Fortunately for Avalara, registration and/or cancellation appears to be coordinated to take longer than 60 days so they appear to be incentivised to delay registration process and also the cancellation process so you are committed to the 12 month contract term. Account managers are no help and reply with "refer T&C' What does this men in costs for us? It means paying the “Managed Registration – UK 349 €” fee (for which we have no issue paying this as they began the process). What we do have an issue with is paying the 4 instalments of “VAT Reporting for small Business 285 €” (or 1,140 € in total) despite being unable to use their service as still waiting for registration. All of this is still ongoing (despite notifying Avalara of Cancelation on Dec 8th) From a customer perspective it is hard to tell if it’s just incompetence on the part of Avalara, or well orchestrated scam. Do we feel “ripped off””? Absolutely. Pros There is nothing positive to say. An atrocious customer experience. " April 12, 2018 4.0 Pros AvaTax was easy to implement in our NetSuite environment. Setting up nexus jurisdictions is a breeze. The interface is simple to understand and use. Besides using the default tax codes, I was able to create several customer rules for two jurisdictions. AvaTax has several powerful reports that help with the monthly reconciliations. The system also allows exporting transactions. We also utilize the Avalara tax returns service. The software and service together make sales tax compliance significantly easier for our company. Cons As a SaaS company, we encountered some difficutly with Chicago lease tax. Avalara calculates the tax properly, but there are additional manual steps to ensure that tax is not included in the Illinois sales tax filing. Review Source DC Debra C.
