Pros: Best Authoring Program by Far

Most features

Microsoft PowerPoint Style

Great Exemplary Support

Very Powerful

Continuous addition of new features

Excellent Review System

Powerful Testing & Feedback Capability

Integrated Audio & Video Editing

Rarely ever crashes

Large library of Tutorials

This is a really great program for developing E-Learning and training lessons and courses. The program is loaded with capability. I have never seen a program that does so much. For example, iif you want to have an audio track, you don't need any other software to record and edit the audio. It is all built in. If you want to add a vid

I have been creating and supervising e-learning courses for decades and there is none that comes even close to Articulate Storyline in power, features and capability.

Storyline looks and feels very much like Microsoft Powerpoint. I think that they have an arrangement with Microsoft to use much of the PowerPoint code as processes like editing a photo is exactly the same. So using it is very easy and comfortable. Most of the commands are familiar and function just as in PowerPoint.

The support is incredibly good. And you will need it because there is so much capability in Storyline that there is a huge amount to learn. Agents respond and will even create a video to show you how.

Cons: Some operations are very slow

No Macro Capability

Very steep learning curve

Expensive

Very limited availability to send e-mails

Biggest negative is the very high price and the pricing rules. Each user has to have a license. This is a killer if you have developers, supervisors, subject matter experts, and editors. each needs a license.

For a program of such power and so Microsoft like, it is surprising that you cannot customize the ribbons and worse, there is no macro capability. So repetitive tasks are burdensome.

There is an incredibly steep learning curve. Expect to spend at least 12 hours on tutorials before you can do anything other than trivia. And even then, you will only know a fraction of what you can do. I have used Storyline for over 2 years and every week or so I find a new thing that I can do and have to take a few minutes to learn that. Given all the support, the high price is in a sense justified but it still is a big investment of cash and your time if you want to use StoryLine. But you do get the best.

There are dozens of little things that they haven't programmed that would seem easy. Like you cannot send an e-mail to the learner in the middle or a course. Or if you want a glossary for many lessons there is no way of maintaining the glossary for all. If you add a new term, you must do so separately for each lesson

The program does so much that several of the functions are really slow. Previewing and publishing are the worst.

Pros: There is really no other software for publishing e-learning that is as easy to use and has the best non-programmer customization as Articulate Storyline. I absolutely love what you can do with it and how it can be used in many, many ways.

Cons: I absolutely hate three things about Articulate Storyline. I hate the enormous cost. I hate the way they handle their customer support and the way they deal with their own product development. If the product didn't cost as much as it does, then these other issues would not be so terrible, but because we pay so much for it, there really should be excellent customer support and excellent product development.

Overall: Since I do a lot of e-learning and all of it is on Articulate Storyline, it is a must but it has serious deficiencies and that is compounded by the fact that the customer service is utterly deceptive. If you need an e-learning tool, this is the best one even though it costs as much as it does. It is worth it. However, you need to be ready to understand a few things quickly. One thing you will learn is that they offer a discussion board and they have staff who are there to patrol and respond and help users, but it is not a help desk. When it comes to asking why something doesn't work, you will be told much of the time that it is working as designed but if it isn't quite right that you should submit a feature request and they don't do that for you as they should if they cared about the direction of the software. You should also know that there are many things about the product design that simply make no sense to anyone but the designers. They focus more on new features rather than fixing persistent problems that users continually complain about.

Storyline is very user friendly and allows you to create customised courses.

Pros: What I like most about this program is how user-friendly it is. When I first started using Storyline, I found it easy to get the hang of it and it wasn't long until I was creating courses without any assistance. I also love the icons feature that is available in Storyline 360. I use it a lot and can't imagine developing without it now.

I also like that if I need support, most questions have been asked online on Storyline forums. They always provide detailed explanations of how to do certain things and other users are also helpful in sharing what they know. The fact that the program has a community of supporters leaves me feeling confident that I can figure out any problem that I have.

Storyline is definitely my preferred eLearning development software.

Cons: There are a few program features that I would love added. I would love to be able to specify exactly how curved corners on shapes are (the yellow boxes that you drag) rather than doing it by eye. I also think updating the alt-text for accessibility should not be split by elements within an object but as an object as a whole (for example icons picking up on individual shapes rather than the icon as whole).

Overall: It is our preferred eLearning development software. I love it!

I have SL2 and love how interactive I can make my courses. I have been using it for three years.

Pros: The free templates are amazing. I love their community site that is up-to-date on LD trends and challenges. Everyone that has taken one of my courses on SL2 likes how fun and engaging they can be. I can add all types of file formats, different types of quizzes, interaction, and multimedia.

Cons: I never seem to feel like an expert as some of the functions/interactions are hard to create. I went to a two day training on SL2 and it didn't teach me enough as I am still trying to figure out variables and how they work. Sometimes the E-Learning Heroes take days to get back to me if I have an issue and don't always explain in detail how to correct the issue.

Overall: Mainly information on ID best practices and some "how tos" from their blog and community. It can be really engaging and fun to create a course using SL2. I like their templates as they are easy to customize. However, now there is SL3 and 360, so getting help or templates for SL2 are few and far between.

Pros: I love how intuitive the UI is - very similar to the familiar Office suite. Tons of triggers, animations, and media types to make great elearning. Especially useful is the layers function, which makes it easier to create rich media and manage the source files.

Lots of my clients really appreciate the review site and our communication there, and it makes it easier for me to manage feedback!

Cons: You definitely need to be an expert in order to make the most of this tool; while a novice may be able to create objects and basic animations, you've got to dive pretty deep to use all of the features. You'd be surprised that the elearning courses you've taken before which look like they are built by the most creative developers and designers are actually done in Storyline.

It's also insanely expensive and make it cost prohibitive for most.

Pros: Storyline is one of the easiest and most intuitive rapid authoring tools on the market. Not only is it easy to use, it also has a large support network in the form of the e-learning heroes site which provides the solution to your issues and answers to your questions from a supportive community.

Due to its intuitive design, it is easy to pick up and can be then used to create both simple and complex activity courses.

Cons: The main con is that you do need to have the latest version of Storyline to really benefit as the support from Storyline 2 has ended which means that anything created on those versions will have issues with browsers as they evolve.

Overall: This is a great all-around authoring tool which can be used by both beginners for quick solutions and also experts to create high-quality learning experiences.

Comments: Articulate had been listening to its users and working busily to provide us with a tool that offered many of the features we had been asking for. I feel that the company really stands behind its product.

The community offers so many valuable resources:

' helpful community managers who always try to answer questions quickly and clearly

' a way to network with other users and share insights and creative ideas

' weekly challenges to keep us engaged and thinking

' a whole library of downloadable content

Tom Kulhman and David Anderson are phenomenal ' they are experts in the field of eLearning and course design and are always eager to share their knowledge, ideas, and tips/tricks. I feel like I never stop learning, growing, and getting better because Articulate supports me. I'm not just a nameless software user ' I'm a community member and they care about my success and my opinion.

Articulate provides helpful tutorials for everything ' I like that they include a video demonstration AND a text version of each tutorial.

First-time users can get started with very little training or experience. It's the most user-friendly eLearning development software on the market, with a very low learning curve!

You can easily import PPT files or other Articulate projects. We've had no problem converting any of our older Studio projects into Storyline projects. Reusable content is a huge time-saver, and Storyline makes it very easy to create and reuse content.

I love that Storyline comes with some pre-built slide layouts and interactions. Even a beginner can engage learners in their courses ' Articulate has done the work for them! The software grows with the user ' you can make your courses as simple or complex as you desire. Articulate has included some powerful tools (like variables) which allow us to create games, interactive content, whatever we can imagine.

I'd love the ability to loop background music in my course, or the ability to use format painter to apply text formatting to my slide notes.

Comments: I have been an Articulate StoryLine user since it came out in about 2013. It took a while, but once I learned how to use it, I was able to create hundreds of amazing e-course modules and interactive games. It became one of my favorite software development tools allowing me to do things I never dreamed possible and really impressed (and expanded) my clients.

Support was okay. But I never really had to submit a support ticket. Articulate has the best community and I was usually able to get the help I needed from moderators or other community members.

However, I can relate to Chris' frustration. For example, StoryLine has the capability to execute javascript which greatly expands what you can do with it. But the stock answer when you have a javascript question is ... "Sorry, we don't provide support for javascript; perhaps someone in the community can help you out." Fortunately for me, there was always someone well versed with javascript that was willing to share their code.

Recently, it is becoming apparent that StoryLine has some major shortcomings, and that Articulate has been slow in adding new features and enhancements in response to client requests. These include such things as a) inability to use with high-res monitors; b) no capability to e-mail results to admin or user; c) no feature to have background audio across all slides (see Chris' review); d) no capability to publish only HTML5 output; e) poor quality of HTML5 published output that does NOT work well on many mobile devices; f) no responsive design capability; g) no capability to send results to a database; h) very slow player response on timeline when synchronizing animations and no true scrubber; and several other issues.

In Nov. 2016, Articulate released 360 which bundled all of their current programs into one annual subscription (which is way too expensive for us to even consider). StoryLine 2 as a stand-alone product is still available and Articulate claims that StoryLine 3 will be available sometime in 2017. However, whether SL3 will address the major shortcomings of us and others, remains unknown.

Therefore, to meet our needs for course development in an ever changing technological environment, we are currently exploring alternative e-learning software development tools. Our leading candidate is Captivate 9. It appears to have all the features missing in StoryLine (and much more). Also, it appears that CP9 is a much better value.

Recommendations to other buyers: For serious e-learning development, especially for HTML5, responsive and mobile development, there are better software tools than StoryLine.

Comments: Over the past 15 years, since 1999, I've been developing eLearning in a variety of industries - education, health care, human resources, physician offices, community colleges, manufacturing and tourism. Originally, I developed in Authorware, then Firefly, then RoboDemo, then Camtasia (scary long list!) and then Captivate. The common denominator here was that each of these products (okay, maybe not so true of Camtasia) had a good size learning curve to adapt to the toolset and to get a project from inception to published content.

Knowing that Articulate was behind Storyline, and having been an avid fan of Tom's blog ("The Rapid e-Learning Blog") - I was keen to check out what Storyline had to offer and I wasn't disappointed. The time that it took me to build my first, interactive course was super fast and, I have to say, I love(d) the GUI. And, yes, it's very PowerPoint like but I love that - I didn't have to relearn a new tools menu or deal with silly palettes that float.

Now, I'm able to speed through production like never before (although, I don't tell too many of my clients how fast the cycle truly is!) - thanks to Storyline. The organic nature of the trigger and layer setup is ideal and I do have to say that the photographic character bundles are an added plus - the competition tried to copy this, but I don't think they have the same feel.

And then there's the tutorials. There are tons of them and they are super appropriate (supplemented by Tom's blog) and I don't ever need to call for support (not true for some of the competitor products) so that's a big plus. The Community functions (the social bits) are pretty stellar, too. I can always visit the various support/community sites to get inspired, even on those days when I'm tired of looking at triggers.

I highly recommend Storyline to anyone who has a similar background - education and graphics - it's a great tool to make that marriage everlasting and super conceptual.

Pros: I love that you don't have to be an engineer and you can create beutiful eLearning modules using Articulate Storyline. It looks similar to Microsoft products which makes it easier for newbies to learn.

Cons: It's super buggy. I'm not sure if it's the developers or what's going on, but when I do QA review for Articulate courses, it takes hours and hours to deal with all the bugs. It drives everyone crazy. But we still won't switch, we love Articulate. Go figure.

Overall: I use Storyline to design eLearning and also review eLearning courses that others create. I've seen really cool eLearning modules that were created in Storyline, you'd be surprised how powerful this tool really is!

Pros: I love the ease and layout of Articulate, as anyone who has used powerpoint can easily adapt to the overall screen layout.

Articulate can be as basic or as complex as you want to make it and so is a great opening tool for anyone looking to start in E-Learning development.

The forums and customer support have been the big difference compared to Captivate.

Cons: The fact that there are numerous versions of Storyline at the moment does make it a bit puzzling for anyone who is new to the industry.

Overall: It was incredibly easy to start using and has a large support system to help you as you progress.

Pros: I have been an instructional designer for over 8 years, and have used lectora, captivate, and storyline and this by far beats out the rest. If you are a master at powerpoint picking this up will give you the same feel and usage. It has a lot of pre built courses and images and more importantly if you ever stuck you have e-learning heroes. You can't go wrong with this product. It's best at this point to purchase 360 because it has all the tools you need to create a better tool.

Pros: The product is simple to navigate and all features are just a mouse click away. The general Microsoft "PowerPoint" feel makes it easy to adapt storyboards and convert it to eLearning. The publishing features are quite extensive, allowing publishing to most types of devices and platforms.

Cons: The costs of upgrading and version updates are excessive.

Overall: I find the entire suite of Articulate products to be user friendly, easy to navigate for users that just enter the eLearning development space up to advanced users. You can pretty much design and develop any project that you can think of.

Pros: full feature set

Cons: some features are finicky

Overall: This eCourse Development tool is a great blend of PowerPoint-type functionality along with customizable web-interface type stuff, like mouse-click triggers. Some of the features are a bit finicky to use (combination of configurations relying on complex order of events which is not apparent to the course developer). A few features do not operate as expected (such as copy text format onto other text) but the Customer Service is very responsive, especially on the Community chat board. Despite these few minor setbacks, definitely the best product of its type on the market.

Pros: Creating e-learning courses with Articulate storyline is something really easy to do. The interface is very straightforward and user-friendly. That does not mean, though, that it lacks on features. Everything you need to create your e-learning is offered.

The tool allows you to select from a lot of templates so that you can start from a pre-design and then customise it to your needs.

What really makes a difference with e-learning courses is to have its users engaged when they are taking them and one thing that makes this possible is the abilty to add interactiveness to it which is something you can easily achieve with Articulate Storyline.

Another great feature is that you can adapt the course to a mobile device quite easily.

One good thing about the company is that they offer both online and on-site training so that you can learn how to use the tool which is something that is really appreciated.

Cons: If you want to use the ability to share the slides with your team you have to pay for the 360 plan, of course, it is a nice feature to have but prices can easily go up with this plan.

Cons: Well, like any software, it has occasional glitches and fairly frequent updates. But, mostly, they are improving with each update (as opposed to breaking things).

Pros: Articulate creates products that solve problems we, the consumer, have. They don't push a "this is what you need" mentality on us. They find out what would make our jobs easier, and then they deliver. Don't we all wish every software company would do that?

Cons: There isn't much to complain about with this product. Maybe wishing it would be a little less expensive? But, you get what you pay for.

Overall: Storyline lets us get training to the field quickly. In a world where technology is changing at a fast pace, we need to be able to get learning content to our people as quickly as possible to stay ahead. With Storyline, we've created a host of solutions: soft-skills selling, CRM software training, scenarios on customer engagement, etc.

Recommendations to other buyers: Storyline does a lot of the same things other products offer, but it does them in half the clicks with a better user interface and better customer and community support. Try it out! Actually build a course/experience in it.

Pros: The mantra is simple--what do you want to do? when do you want it to happen? Those two questions are all it takes to start some amazing creation. The tool is nearly limitless.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you're making the investment in the software I highly recommend investing in some professional training on it as well. Pros: The learning curve with Storyline is much shorter than with the the offering of other major authoring tools. So you get high quality output in a fraction of the time, because it has a look and feel that is quite familiar to the average computer user.

Cons: There are limits to the functionality of hot spot quizzes. You are unable to functionally create multiple hotspots.

Pros: Ease of Use, Cost, Customer Support, Features

Cons: Lack of Ability to Design Responsively

Overall: I really enjoy using Storyline. It has a very intuitive interface. If you can use PowerPoint, you can figure out Storyline. The object/function triggers are very easy to use in comparison to other elearning products. So far, my only issue is that is doesn't offer responsive design. Though, the course player can resize itself to the viewing window.

Recommendations to other buyers: The Articulate community is second to none!

Pros: - Easy to use and understand: everything is quite easy to find and to use. Creating an e-learning module can be done with minimal learning

- Many functions: there are enough options to create basic to complex e-learning modules

- Fast: it is quite fast

Cons: - I did not need support that much but when I did it did not help me and even wasted time.

- Version 3 is not that much more improved or expanded compared to version 2. There are bugs in version 3 that should be fixed.

Pros: Quickly develop eLearning due to simplified UI most people can pick up and go with! Most new users can create interesting and engaging videos using scenario and branching and includes good selection of built in variables and for the more advanced, ability to create custom variables. Many others, too many to list. It's a good product IMO and I believe less expensive than others for multiple licenses.

Cons: I don't have any specific cons, but in general, being an advanced eLearning developer, I find other products, although more difficult to master at first, offer more advanced functions, settings and options across the board to whist as quickly build, edit, and publish highly interactive online learning.

Comments: Articulate offers great eLearning products with many capabilities but most importantly, the user community is absolutely fantastic! The users offer so much support as well as the Articulate staff. The well-seasoned to the first time user will benefit from the encouragement and technical expertise freely offered.

I use Articulate Storyline to create eLearning courses. I appreciate the many features, such as the layers and the trigger options. The layer and trigger options allow instructional designers to create engaging interactions. Learners don't appreciate reading bullets while listening to narration on every slide so the extra features allow learners to actively engage with the content by clicking around and getting immediate feedback, etc. Designers can create fun activities and include sound and video. The free form quizzing options are terrific for creating custom quizzes and I really appreciate the publishing options as well, especially if you are designing for mobile delivery.

Lastly, I love the translate options. I'm frequently engaged by foreign clients who require eLearning in their native language. Using the translation feature saves my client a great deal of money. I also appreciate being able to check a box in the player to change all the back-end text like the previous, next, and try again, in the client's native language. Joyfully, many languages are included, even Sanskrit! Okay, I'm totally kidding about the Sanskrit!

I love Storyline and I love Articulate! It's a great company with a lot of great people who are willing to help and love what they do!

Pros: I have been using Articulate Storyline for a couple years now to design interactive online courses. For us, it has been the perfect software to do this, and I have really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of designing courses. It's extremely customizable and there are an almost infinite number of ways something can be designed, which allows us the flexibility to create courses with the specific criteria that we often have. The interface is occasionally clunky, but not so much that it's unusable, and the courses that we can create are beautiful and definitely not clunky.

Cons: It is very logic-based, which is not a con but is just a thing to be aware of. There are so many different trigger and state options that can be customized, which on the one hand is amazing and on the other hand can lead to some confusion or conflicting triggers, which can then break the interaction. If you're planning on using this software for complex interactions, I would recommend becoming familiar with the principles of object-oriented programming.

Pros: Ease of use, community

Cons: Manual text formatting required

Overall: For ease of use, Storyline 2 is unparalleled in my opinion. Even if you haven't used an elearning tool before, you'll find it easy to pick up and learn. The support community is a great resource if you get stuck. My biggest complaint is the lack of a style sheet, which creates a LOT of manual formatting work. You can make slide masters like PowerPoint, but no universal CSS like style sheet.

Pros: I really like this software. It's made developing e-learning (especially HTML5) very easy. The user interface is very intuitive, especially if you're familiar with PowerPoint or other Office products. The functionality has improved with each release (the inclusion of motion paths was huge!) The E-Learning Heros online community is a great place to get help and ideas from Articulate staff and power users.

Cons: The product does have a tendency to crash from time to time, but if you save frequently, that isn't an issue. I think some work could be done to make the creation of animations a bit easier, but by and large there are not a lot of downsides to this program.

Pros: Not much

Cons: It is not much of an authoring platform with most features available in the most basic LMS.

Overall: It seems quite obvious that many of these reviews are written by administrators justifying their software purchase decision or individuals who don't actually understand what causes individuals to retain content. Having a slide deck with a screen recording, audio, and questions (drag & drop, multi choice, etc) was groundbreaking 9 years ago when I first saw them. Now it's expected in a training software. This software has the category simulations listed, but this doesn't do simulations unless you have programmed your own javascript page and inserted it into the articulate. (I can do that in a powerpoint just as easy) A 5 star software should have actual simulations where the learner can make mistakes navigating systems and see the consequences of the wrong choice. It's difficult to make them, but when they are made can communicate what tens of slides won't accomplish, no matter how many assessments and matching exercises you have, because the skill being demonstrated isn't what is being actually tested for with the questions, the questions will demonstrate the learner could memorize, but nothing in the questions shows they know how to apply the content in context of a scenario. How many managers get emails with attachments from unknown sources which they open? Yes, they took an assessment that they knew the information, but without practical application the material fell on ears that could regurgitate the responses but could not apply the process. News flash, it's still an issue, and the power points and articulate screen grabs will come until real simulations show the real world and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you want a real Training Software invest in Content Authoring software separate from the LMS. Your LMS needs to be able to accept SCORM data from other platforms. The authoring software needs to allow you to create actual simulations with the user maneuvering different scenarios or screens and selecting different options in response to a scenario. Each answer doesn't immediately say it is right or wrong, but instead moves forward with the consequences of the actions taken. I finally convinced my client to move away from this and into a proper LMS and use content authoring software appropriate to the material in the CBT (Computer Based Training)

Pros: Articulate Storyline uses many design elements that Windows users are accustomed to. This makes the user comfortable with it from the start. It has a fairly easy learning curve for new users and online training resources to grow with. The software has incredible power for simulations and complex training modules. Its SCORM output has been compatible with every system that I have used it with. It has quickly become the standard for our company.

Cons: Only available on Windows, no Mac OS support. Storyline 360 and Storyline 3 do not follow the same development path.

Pros: The content library has characters, graphics, and templates. The templates are beautiful, professional, and fantastic. Anyone can look instantly like a pro at authoring interactive content.

Cons: The software itself can be a heavy load on the system; saving can take a while, and when users play an asset created by Sotryline, if they have an old computer, it can be a heavy load. Comments: I have been using Articulate' Storyline to create elearnig courses for about three years now and I must say it is by far the best authoring software on the market.

I consider myself an expert in the field of elearning with more that 10 years experience in the field and working with many types of elearning tools during this time. Since I discovered Articulate's Storyline I refrain from using anything else because there is no better on the market today.

What I like most about the Articulate and their devotion to their customers is that they listen and respond. Storyline is now in its second version where they have addressed many of the issues the users gave them feedback about. They also have a community forum where active members and super users are there to assist with technical assistance and hint. This is very nice to have because it provides you with a great place to go to if you want to do something but just cant get it to work properly.

Storyline is a program that seems simple at first glance but the possibilities are endless. You can use it effectively to create a quick course or you can delve into the intricacies and really push the limits of the program. This being said I don't feel that I have reached the limit of what Storyline has to offer.

It is a great tool for beginners and experts. I can really recommend it.

Pros: You can create amazing elearning in Storyline. While not always easy to use, it is full featured. You can include amazing effects and customize this to a very specific degree.

Cons: This software is expensive, no doubt. And it require some time to learn. There are some features and issues that I have requested. The support is very responsive, but often there are no workaround. I ran into a very strange problem with a windows version update where you could no longer adjust the display of Storyline, making it almost unusable on this windows version, and was a bit surprised that the company had not addressed it. Fortunately I was able to move on to a different windows version, but that was a concern.

Overall: For elearning, its a powerful tool, so I recommend it. But its certainly not for the casual user.

Comments: I have been using Articulate Storyline for a few years now and am a firm believer that it the best authoring tool available on the market. I have experience of using a number of other authoring software and never found the freedom I have with Storyline. It is very easy to pick up and begin using, if you have ever used PowerPoint 2007 onwards it will be a very familiar interface. There is certified training available (at additional cost) which is well worth investing in, however, the support available through their online communities will have you creating courses in no time. As it isn't template based you have full control of what you create, therefore, your imagination is your only limiting factor. You also have many different publishing options, whether to a chosen LMS, online, to CD or even into a Word document. Clearly every system has limitations but for me, I've not found them with Storyline as yet. The only issue I had initially was the PC I used was quite old and didn't have the processing power to cope with a handful of the very large projects I was working on. However, once my hardware was upgraded the issue disappeared.

I am comfortable recommending this product and the new upgrade offers even better functionality.

Comments: As a multimedia developer this is my go to tool for eLearning. I use this everyday because of how simple it is to use and the ability that it gives me to create nice subtle animations and some really nice eLearning. I have tried other tools out there and they are either more complex to use or just don't have the features that storyline has.

Pros

Really simple to use

Has a great community behind it if you need any help sorting something out or need some ideas

It publishes to all the formats that I use at the moment.

The ability to use JavaScript to get that little bit extra out of it

Cons

It would be really hand if it could publish straight out to Scorm Cloud like captivate as thats what i use for testing

Some of the variables can be a bit iffy sometimes and can take a bit of trouble solving

Constantly having to expand windows to enter requirements for variables especially if you have 30 variables to change.

Having a built in feature to put an image in the background of the HTML5 instead of just a simple color

But overall it is a really good product and i would recommend it to anyone that wants to make simple eLearning as they will be able to pick it up in a matter of minutes.

Comments: Not all eLearning authoring tools are built like Storyline. Lot's of them advertise ease of use and features, but only Storyline has both (and more).

First, consider Storyline's interface. It's truly built on Microsoft's PowerPoint interface, which helps with moving between the two platforms when creating detailed interactive content or simplified presentation content. In addition, Storyline let's you import PowerPoint presentations with a couple of clicks.

The platform takes advantage of all of PowerPoint's features while adding interactivity features that would benefit an eLearning author. These features help in accelerating eLearning creation, while keeping the learning curve low.

Second, Storyline comes with outstanding support through the eLearning Heroes website where you can find forums and a portal to interact with experts at Articulate who will help answer questions or help resolve issues. In addition, the eLearning Heroes website lets you interact with other eLearning authors where you can learn tips and shortcuts or obtain new ideas.

Overall, the product and product support you get with Storyline make it an outstanding product for creating interactive eLearning or interactive presentations.

Comments: It's extremely easy to create interactive and engaging eLearning courses through Articulate Storyline, and you don't even have to be a computer programmer or have a degree as an instructional/graphic designer.

The built-in triggers and variables allow you to design an impressive course even for the "newbie". And the storyboard layout makes it easy to keep track of the different branching scenarios you might have for your scenario based training.

Lastly, the E-Learning Heroes community is outstanding! Here, you can seek help from both the Articulate community and the Articulate staff. Stuck on a current eLearning project? Share your project and ask the community for help! Not sure how variables work? Post your question and watch as the responses come pouring in.

I'm a big believer in Articulate Storyline and will hopefully be upgrading to Storyline 2 in the very near future because it has some ugrades that I wish I had with the original Storyline, such as more animations, hiding the next button until the end of the timeline, etc.

If you're on the fence about purchasing this product, be sure to check out the Articulate page on YouTube for some pretty impressive video tutorials.

Comments: We were an elearning shop that used Captivate. Advanced developers got along with it okay, but more junior staff really struggled with anything beyond the most basic features. Additionally, publishing to Word for subject matter expert reviews was an awkward process.

Switching to Storyline, things clicked. Advanced Developers did things much more quickly. Masterpages and templates really helped us leverage repeatable designs very efficiently. Junior developers mastered the basics, and upskilled to develop more advanced interactions because they weren't spending so much time just assembling basics.

Folks just got it- I know Captivate technically has much of the same capabilities. But the differentiation isn't about features, it's about execution. For many reasons, teams (several across our large organization switched) executed much better in Storyline.

Also, subject matter experts could receive Word outputs from Storyline which could be imported directly back into the Storyline file to make the editing process much more of a direct action with subject matter experts, creating more efficiency in the review process.

We are all thrilled to have made the switch.

Comments: I love Articulate Storyline and rave to anyone and everyone about it. I even love it so much that I'm authoring two books about it, and then I'll even make my parents read them! Storyline is such a user-friendly and intuitive piece of software that you can easily move from novice to intermediate to experienced user in no time (of course, with a little time and devotion).

With all of the built in templates, features, and functions, it's really a one-stop-shop when it comes to developing e-learning products. I've had clients in many sectors from higher education to non-profit to defence realize the true power and potential of Storyline, and there is seldom a time when I have to ask myself whether something can be done in Storyline.

Pros:

- Easy to use

- Great user-friendly interface

- AMAZING community with tons of support

- Built in templates, with access to tutorials on the launch screen

- Built in functionality (e.g. sliders, motion paths, buttons, markers, etc.)

- SCORM/API Conformant

Cons:

- The only real con anyone might have for Storyline is the licensing cost, but when you compare the profits that will come from developing courses in Storyline, it really pays for itself.

Comments: I have been using Articulate software for about 3 years now. My small e-learning business relies on Articulate Storyline to build engaging and interactive e-learning courses for my clients.

The first thing that attracted me to Articulate Storyline was definitely its ease of use and familiar interface. Anyone who knows PowerPoint can quickly get started with Storyline and create basic interactive e-learning. However, once you get comfortable using it, which doesn't take very long, you realize you can create very powerful and fully customized interactions. It is a great tool for any learning designer wanting to do their own development, and also for experienced developers as it is possible to really extend its capabilities with the use of Javascript.

I think the challenge for Articulate is to ensure its HTML5 compatibility functions better. While course that use the default settings work wonderfully on all platforms, course that have more customization have features that sometimes do not work correctly in HTML5. This is, of course, something that most software and app developers struggle with, and I am sure Articulate will rise to the challenge!

Highly recommend this software!

Pros: Articulate is very easy to use and you can be creating engaging presentations out of the box within minutes.

Cons: Depending on the complexity of the presentations you want to do, Storyline may or may not support the functionality you're looking for. It allows for a fair bit of customization, but we found several things that just couldn't be done using this software that we had been able to do previously with custom code.

Comments: I've used Storyline for over 2 years (v1.5 and v 2.0) with a variety of clients.

The tool is extremely powerful, yet usable. For departments leveraging Powerpoint, there is an import tool that really helps your team effectively repurpose Powerpoint assets into this authoring tool. It exports to Word for SME review or to make workbooks. If there isn't a function inherent in the tool that you would like, it allows the developer to add in customized Javascript to extend the functionality to anything within their programming ability.

We had used a competitor's product for years in a department of 7. Only 2 were productive in the tool, and the remainder of the team never really became productive in the tool. Support was poor.

When we switched to Storyline, within 3 months, the majority of the team was significantly productive in the tool and we repacked over 100 courses into Storyline. Support from Articulate was spectacular. This extends beyond tech support (which is great) to a team of people at Articulate that frequently run training (webinars) and offer resources (tutorials, templates, tips).

It changed how productive every developer in the department was.

Pros: Easy to use, familiar interface (powerpoint-like), can easily be extended by using variables and javascript so you can create involved simulations if necessary

Cons: If anything, it's a little expensive, but most software in this category is. Beyond that, if you have used powerpoint, you can use this software!

Pros: Easy to understand layout, informational videos, excellent downloadable content

Cons: Can be a little slow and clunky

Overall: I was completely new to the world of LMS authoring, and this was recommended to me. I purchased it, and within a few short weeks, I was able to create interactive classes and quizzes for my employees. It has tons of features, and the layout is easy to navigate. I'm still learning about how to utilize it best, but their website has countless videos to teach yourself how to use different features, and tons of downloadable content, such as templates and pre-made quizzes. Overall, I would highly recommend this software for a beginner in the e-Learning industry.

Recommendations to other buyers: I have enjoyed using this software to create content for my company's online learning department

Comments: I've been using Articulate Storyline for about 3 years and when I started I was impressed with it's user friendliness and the built in features so that I could start creating courses right away. Now that I've been using for a while, I'm impressed with the ability to customize almost anything so I can build a course that's unique and my own. I think is the one of the best things about Storyline. The other great thing about Articulate is the customer support. The E-learning Heroes community forum is the best customer support I've ever experienced. Not only do other Storyline community members help out and answer each others questions (in good time), but there's tutorials, discussions, and free templates - it's really incredible.

I don't really have anything major in the "con" category - one minor thing to be aware of is that the software is pretty large, so sometimes running it and other programs can be slow, and that's depending on what you're doing - for instance importing a large video file or something. But I love this software and would highly recommend it!

Comments: Articulate Storyline has become my go-to tool for eLearning development. Its intuitive interface, powerful feature set, and robust publishing options help set our team's creativity on fire. We no longer have to think about what the technology will allow us to do when we're creating courses. Now, if we can dream it, there's probably a way to do it in Storyline.

We love the dockable panels in Storyline 2, and the Auto-Save feature. We would love to see more robust central control of states and layers in a future iteration of storyline, in addition to unlocking the more technical manipulation of variables for power users. Also, for folks just getting into eLearning development, the sticker price can seem a bit high.

Despite a few imperfections, Storyline is, hands down, my favorite tool for developing content, and has paid for itself many, many times over in time savings and increase capabilities to build incredibly media rich, mobile-ready content. We love Storyline, the Articulate user community, and the support team. All are top-notch!

Comments: Storyline 2 is leaps and bounds above the completion when it comes to learning the tool for the first time. Couple the familiar look and feel of PowerPoint with a supportive community who publishes videos, articles, challenges and templates daily and it is hard not to get going within the first week. While updates and new features are slow coming, anything released seems to come with minor issues and points of irritation. The ability to view content in both linear and branched views if very handy when creating complex material. Simulations are easy to create, page items can easily be animated, and output is smooth. Having a visible timeline, is a highly desirable trait. This allows viewing of tracks for each item which helps to show when each item appear helping to visualize what your page will look like without constantly previewing it. Need to move forward on a page after a certain number of items are clicked then variables are here to help. Combing all these factors makes development time drastically less than the competition.

Comments: Articulate Storyline is a great application to use for the beginning instructional designer and the most experienced. I particular enjoy the fact that it is WYSIWYG, which requires no programming knowledge at all. There are many things that can be done with Articulate, which I haven't begun to explore them all. However, Articulate's YouTube channel is a great start to reviewing some of the creative ideas that the designer can use to create great lessons.

The iPad app player allows a learner to take the learning with them on the road. Lessons can be produced in SCORM 1.2, 2004, and AICC formats. Articulate is not ready for Tin Can, but then again, Tin Can is not necessarily ready for "prime time" either, in my opinion.

The Powerpoint import feature works fairly well. If there is automation in the Powerpoint, it will take precedence over any navigation buttons, so be sure to painstakingly remove the automation if that is what you need.

I recommend you try Articulate Storyline--I believe it will be a very pleasant experience for you.

The available templates, images, icons, and illustrations available in the Articulate library is AMAZING. It would take us days to find or create these resources external to Storyline. It's been a game changer for us.

Cons: We wish it had Audio as part of the content library. It would be nice to add music/soundtracks and sound effects via the content library. We would also like additional photographic characters (they slowly add more)

Pros: Quick, intuitive app that is great for developing a course quickly and efficiently. After watching the YouTube videos to get you started, you should have a course done in a decent amount of time. Branching is easy to create and track. Included assets, such as the built in templates and characters help the user complete a professional looking course. UPDATE: It can now publish to MP4! YES!

Cons: Eventually, I would like to see a browser-based version of this tool, so, Chromebooks could be used to create eLearning courses. And a more affordable version for individuals working on contracts.

Overall: This authoring tool allows me to create dynamic eLearning courses quickly but also allows me to create large, project managed courses with the same quality as some graphically designed and coded courses.

Comments: I first encountered Articulate 6 years ago, when using old Studio version. Back then, Articulate already looked like the software of future, but it had some flaws. Adobe people new this, so they took time and created new editions couple of years ago with fabulous Storyline and new Studio versions. These software eLearning tools are perfect for eLearning content creation within huge organizations. The ease of use, user friendly approach, and lots of available material and perfect support from community really launches this tool to the very top. Perfect tool if you are under time pressure, or having lots of multimedia content. What I like about it is that everyone is able to produce eLearning with it - even if you see the tool for the first time. In just a couple of clicks, you are able to build content. The down side of it is poor animation possibilities, and minor issues with tracking and publishing.

Everything else regarding the tool really is perfect for any eLearning developer.

Comments: My first experience of Articulate was using their Studio 09 Software which was great for doing conversions of PowerPoint files into eLearning content which is awesome and makes it straight forward for any skill level.

Eventually I need something with more horses under the hood and Storyline certainly turbo-charged my eLearning capabilities and gave me flexible tools that meant I could produce great interactive content (that also works on touch devices) with ease.

The killer feature for me are the translation capabilities as I have to create content in many languages and Storyline supports than anyone else on the market and also give me the tools to fully make my own when working with seldom used languages.

Great set of tools made even better in Storyline 2 with some great additions to the selection of creative tools, Storyline is a must have for any eLearning pro or even an amateur as Articulate are incredibly supportive and helpful every step of the way!

Comments: I had heard interesting claims about Articulate Storyline, such as "it is a game-changer". Sceptic by nature, I nevertheless took a closer look - and was very positively surprised by what Storyline can do, and allows you to do easily. Supporting not only Ppt import (not a "fascinating feature", but often helpful), but also layers, variables, triggers and events, using Storyline has made my job in preparing good materials for students much easier.

One nice feature I especially appreciate are adaptive characters where the facial expression can be changed (using a trigger/event combination) based on a variable - e.g., how well the student has answered the previous question. This is both easy to do and gives courses a much more "natural" and "immediate" feeling.

The one feature I most urgently wish for (but am probably unlikely to get) is a native OS X version, so I can drop the "start up the VM first" steps...

Comments: Pros: I am relatively new to Storyline and so far my experience has been great. I have found it straightforward and easy to use. I wouldn't class myself as hugely tech savvy. I can find my way through things and figure things out but Storyline is intuative and supportive. The support available is phenominal. We have experts where I currently work but the online support is great. E Learning Heroes is like one big family and everyone is willing to help and offer support.

Cons: The limited amount of characters. I find this quite frustrating and things start to look a bit bland, especially when developing lots of eLearning modules.

Overall my experience of Storyline has been great. I have not felt intimidated by the software at all and have felt that I can actually develop refreshing and interactive learning for all of our staff that they can get something out of.

Pros: My favorite part was that it resembled PowerPoint. The software was easy to use because it was similar to a product I already knew.

Cons: I wanted more pre-made modules to pick from. I know with Articulate 360 this is the case, but when using Storyline, I felt limited at times due to the slide outlines that I could choose from.

Overall: I was able to use Storyline to build a continuing education course for veterinarians about Law and Ethics. Storyline gave me the ability to make interactive cases in which the student had to choose how they would handle a specific case, and then the course would go from there based on the decisions being made. Articulate was easy to learn, and it gave me the ability to think outside of the box when creating a new course.

Comments: As a user of Articulates Storyline 2 me and my colleagues have found a variety of ways to accomplish our design brief when creating e-learning content.

We really love the ability to create and manipulate system simulations via the screen capture functionality and have been able to create a compliment of eLearning to train a large cohort of staff within our organisation effectively and efficiently (some of whom do not work the normal 9-5).

Although some people may think adding variables to an eLearning package we have found the user interface within SL2 to be very intuitive when revisiting and revising a course.

Would definitely recommend this product for anyone looking into eLearning as a solution to their training needs.

Comments: Storyline 2 is hands down the easiest e-Learning development software I have ever had to learn. It has a very intuitive user interface and with very little effort you can be up and running, as a new user, in a half an hour creating slides. Storyline 2 excels as a rapid authoring tool. With more control over animation and overall appearance editing this version makes prototyping easier and accurate. Creating content, engagement, and assessment within Articulate is not only intuitive but effective. Storyline lacks true responsive design capability and there is a lack of detailed information on some of the more advanced features using variables and JavaScript. A nice bonus to the software is the e-Learning Hero's blog. It is a great resource for Articulate Storyline and all things e-Learning and instructional design related.

Comments: Ease of use was key as I began to use Storyline. and Ease of use was certainly delivered. Anyone who has ever created slides for a presentation can create a simple course without reading a single help screen. That being said, as I grew in my ability to create and develop more complex e-learning, the tools were waiting for me and continue to do so. That is good. That would be enough. But added to the software itself, the user community website is amazing. I would score it a 25 on a scale of 1-10. The site is lovely and any time I have ever had a question, I found the answer there. Along with information and guidance, the opportunities to interact with others and share content and best practices has made me better at what I do. Comments: This authoring software should be considered as the first choice once you have to find one for your work.

Most of all I like interactive opportunities (states, triggers, variables) which allow me to develop rich learning experience. The ability to modify look and feel of player is also a great feature. Recent upgrade to Storyline 2 brought lots of new animation features and triggers. Sliders give the more natural control for users.

If speak about 'cons' I need more capable design tools built in Storyline. For example, there is no blurring option or deleting picture background. Articulate should bring more opportunities for mobile learning design.

Wrapping up the review, Storyline is the right balance tool in terms of easiness of working with and opportunities to implement your ideas.

From my perspective Articulate Storyline is the easiest rapid e-learning tool available on the market. Beginners will learn to produce elaborated advanced course within 2 days which is very fast - compared to other tools.

Comments: I highly recommend Articulate Storyline. It's easy to use and overall is very intuitive.

Storyline is the only e-learning authoring tool I would recommend. It is blank slate creative tool and because the UI is designed to look like Powerpoint you will be up and running and building interactive content in next to no time.\

Comments: Articulate Storyline has come quite a ways from the company's entry product that was Studio '09.

Articulate Storyline is a wonderful tool that makes development easy with powerful features and hidden tweaks that can create fluid courses, interesting interactions, and provide so much opportunity.

The only gripe I have when using this software is the lack of Mac OS X support, requiring a virtual machine and Windows OS to use the product is a major bummer, but this definitely does not make this a deal breaker for the software.

Simply taking the product for a test drive is the most convincing experience and with it comes a huge community, always ready and willing to help out.

Comments: Whether your looking to create a bespoke interactive game or a rapid interactive guide, Storyline has the flexibility and durability to meet your needs.

From a usability perspective, anyone familiar with PowerPoint will find themselves able to perform basic Storyline functions in a matter of minutes. Like a good computer game, Storyline is easy to pick up and play with but has a depth and power that enables more experienced users to build some truly impressive creations.

I'd recommend using Storyline alongside a graphic design package (such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Fireworks) to get the absolute maximum out of it but this is by no means essential.

Pros: The many ways to customize slides and quizzes to suit your needs. All the demos and assistance from the storyline community.

Cons: Not for users who don't have some basic logic skills about variables and programming. Although I experienced it as user friendly at first, my colleagues who are less computer literate struggled.

Overall: Adaptability and customizability

Comments: I've been using Storyline 2 for the past several years and continue to be amazed at how flexible it is when it comes to creating interactive content. To get the most from this software, you will experience a learning curve (not too steep) but it's well worth the time. It's use of triggers, conditions, and variables makes it the tool of choice for all of the work I do for my clients. The company provides a variety of templates, a weekly e-Learning challenge, and one of the best community forums I've had the opportunity to participate in. Do yourself a favor and spend a few weeks with this software. If you do, I'm confident it will become one of your "go to" tools!

Comments: Articulate.com is for people who know they want to create a course, and have some great ideas for how they want to do it, but are at a total loss as to how exactly they want it to happen.

Whether this is those who are great at coming up with courses and bad with technology, or those who have good ideas but have never actually taught anyone before, this is Articulate's core audience. These are the people who have great ideas, but aren't sure how to structure them into courses for other people to digest.

With the help of the offered technology, Articulate.com creates a fabulous platform for people from all walks of life to share their classes and views with the world.

Pros: If you know Powerpoint, it is so easy to ramp up to Storyline. Add the 5 Storyline 1 hour training sessions and you are even more equipped and ready to go. The functionality to add engagement, quizzing and awesome. The ability to add characters and voice over is very simple and brings another level of engagement to the e-learning.

Cons: Just started using this year as I was a Powerpoint guru and afraid to make the transition, so right now don't have any major cons until a use more.

Overall: Improving our company's e-learning. Making e-learning fun and engaging. Better equipping our people to be successful, align with our culture.

Pros: Storyline has a simple user interface familiar to most people that have used current office suites (if you can use PowerPoint, you can create basic interactive eLearning out of the box).

Cons: Learning and using advanced tools takes searching out advanced learning, but still easier to use than most major competitors.

Just as important as buying a car, you want to ensure the dealership is their to support your purchase after the sale. Articulate and its community is that support the moment you begin using their software. In fact, you don't even have to be a customer to benefit from community conversations and resources.

All around great software ownership experience.

Comments: I like working with a program where the company provides lots of help and encouragement. I have been using Articulate products for two years and every time I go looking for help I find it quickly. I have really enjoyed Storyline 2. I provide online training for 800 employees, 700 of which are commissioned first responders. In the past all online training has been click and read and it was hard to get my employees to pay attention and retain the material. The ability to quickly and easily make the online training more interactive made a big difference in retention and has reduced the number of complaints about the training.
