December 5, 2016 4.0 Setting Activecampaign for a client with a limited budget and limited technical skills, we were able to set up and automate many of the lead funnels for this B2B SAAS company. The tools are comparable to what you'll pay 10X for, and one of the features I love about Activecampaign are their Marketing Automation Workflows - allowing you to setup, segment, and activate the inactive. By using this tool, we achieved 25% open rates in the HR industry where 10% is often average; by integrating the online tools with our inbound marketing Team - both phone and online support - we were able to increase sales Demos 10X over the previous 6 months because Activecampaign helped us motivate the inactive, as well as those who take action. One of the tools I recommend most to clients is Activecampaign because it's performance marketing at a reasonable price. Pros Marketing automation tools and templates Deliverability excellent in our experience CRM was enough for our needs, helping coordinate 5 staff. Can use in Gmail, which helped our non-Tech sales people. Reporting that helps quantify engagement and ROI Cons CRM was not the strongest, yet enough for our needs Marketing automation services generally are separate from emails you send to larger lists in my approach. I would 100% recommend AC to someone who is getting started in business and wants to implement advanced marketing campaigns. However, once you scale over 50k contacts, I would move out of Active Campaign because of the difficulties to segment contacts and send broadcasts. (AC: you should imitate Ontraport or Influsionsoft for your broadcast segmentation) Pros The price point to the functionalities is GREAT! Meaning, if I'm getting started with my business, and I have my budget limited, this is the BEST tool to get started. Cons The segmentation to send broadcasts is very confusing and difficult to use. And I'm saying this as a software developer, so I'm very familiar with IF and OR functions, but the user interface, and the display make things very hard to use. Review Source Steven R. Pros The lists and tags and managing the lists are very helpful in knowing who's interested in what I have to offer. Also, the open and clicks rate/management is very helpful with this, as well. Cons Drafting campaigns is EXTREMELY difficult. Formatting, having consistent fonts, fonts and font colors showing up one way when you craft the email, but showing up completely differently in the preview, and then a completely OTHER way in the test email. Pros ActiveCampaign specializes in providing email marketing solutions with an intuitive, visual (albeit a bit slow) interface for creating and sending email campaigns and logical drips (i.e. If Email A opened send Email B or else send Email C). The CRM is a nice add-on if you don't already have a way to manage your client relationships. Cons The CRM is quite clunky and doesn't have the power and flexibility of platforms that were designed with that functionality in mind. They also migrated us from Mailchimp for free. The customer support folk are really helpful :) Cons It's not cheap. Well, it starts cheap... but it quickly adds up with more subscribers. I'd say it's still good value, though. Also, it wasn't the easiest to use at first. The automation builder is both easy-to-use AND powerful. You can trigger actions and segment by almost any criteria you can imagine. In a lot of ways, the automation builder rivals the (what I consider) best-in-class solutions such as Marketo. The email builder is intuitive and the template library comes with a lot of good looking emails to start from. Zero HTML/CSS needed. The built-in SMS messaging is really cool and somewhat unique in the industry. Building an automation consisting of emails and SMS messages is drag and drop, with no integrations needed. While it's limited (as of today) the CRM is really intuitive and clean. If they continue to add functionality in this area they may have something incredible in a couple years. Importing contacts is simple and goes far beyond the typical CSV file. Google contacts, Google Sheets, other email providers. no problem. Possibly the best import tools I've seen in this industry. Cons The most obvious one is the lack of a landing page builder. Having landing pages in the tool would be ideal, but solutions such as LeadPages can be easily integrated. Having to pay for email compatibility testing (for different devices) is a bit annoying, feels like you're being "nickel and dimed." The reporting leaves a lot to be desired. I'm really hoping they invest in this area (much more important than having built-in landing pages in my view), as it would really elevate the solution and make it an easy choice vs the Infusionsofts of the world. Cons Some articles in help could be written in more laymen terms. And would be nice to be able to upload short videos without having to have a landing page or be able to link to video on social media platforms. Their chat responded quickly, but gave pretty abbreviated answers. Some of the questions took over a month to resolve. Kind of impersonal experience overall but I guess that's the deal with a large number of users and you aren't on some type of enterprise level pricing. Pros Many features and functions, good integrations and straightforward user interface Cons Does not work with Gravity Forms WordPress plugin as you can't really track interactions on your website unless you tag everything. Not sure if this is true for other external form programs, but make sure you check it out. Also, you can't receive individual emails at the contact level. Any contact you wish to interact with has to be made into a "deal" before you can receive an email and truthfully this requires quite a bit of setup. AC gets a bit pricey when you start adding a decent amount of contacts, but it's cheaper at the beginning than Hubspot, Pardot-Salesforce, etc. It also doesn't track anonymous users to the site, a small issue but nice to have that history when someone actually converts. Reason for choosing ActiveCampaign We really liked Mautic open source, but didn't want to have to support it. We've decided to go back to Mautic and link it to either Suite CRM or PipeDrive as a CRM and just pay an external consultant since we've done that in the past and gotten decent support. My experience is that ActiveCampaign is allowing me to EXPAND my business thanks to its functionality. Pros What I love most about ActiveCampaign are its segmentation and automation features. It helps me easily manage my audience's interests. Let me address each separately. First, segmentation. ActiveCampaign's tagging feature is the best in the industry. Not only can you preset tags in the system, you can also create new ones on the fly as you add them to your contacts — even from third party software. Then, you can create list segments based on those tags, and send broadcast or automated emails only to these segments. It's easy, fast and elegant. I waste no time wrestling with the interface. Second, automation. You can literally automate EVERYTHING in ActiveCampaign. Whether a contact clicks on a link or visits a page, you can send them down a variety of rabbit holes based on their behavior. That feature alone is priceless. Cons I'll say that, so far, I have zero qualms about the software. Perhaps maybe the pricing of the tiers, but that's not really a worthwhile complaint since we're addressing the functionality and benefits of the software here. So far, so great. At the same time, I have been using MailChimp for a nonprofit that I'm involved with. I use both products frequently. What keeps my impressed with AC is how much more professional of a platform it is. MailChimp seems like it is better for smaller projects. AC's interface, segmenting, and automations make it stand out. Cons My only gripe against ActiveCampaign is the need to have my images perfectly created and sized BEFORE I bring them into my email. With MailChimp, you can drop in nearly any kind/size of an image and you have a handy graphic tool to resize, crop, etc. Adding this to AC would be a great improvement and keep our team from having to jump into Photoshop as often. We automate scores to contacts who have carried out various actions. We also automate emails for example in the lead up to an event. The customisation options are fantastic. It took a little bit of figuring out at the start and we still get a bit confused but the support team on live chat are the fastest and most helpful that I know of. We essentially traded a car for a wheel-less skateboard. Pros The customer support is excellent, the problem is that the product is so broken / painful / useless, that their support can't make up for it. Cons Using Active Campaign is the worst part of my working life. It's clunky, slow, buggy, and is caught trying to do too many things and doing them all badly.
