Tax Director Accounting Used the software for: 2+ years ### "UltraTax - A reliable dinosaur that we are keeping around" December 20, 2025 5.0 Overall, we have been thrilled with the software and have shaped our tech stack around this software solution as we don't have intentions to change any time soon. Support is helpful. Software updates are reliable with updated forms. We don't expect any earth-shattering improvements to modernize the interface, but we are okay with that for the time being. Pros Ultratax has become the gold standard for our firm in terms of accuracy, reliability, and completeness in terms of tax forms and filings. We have compared to many other offerings and we love how thorough and robust this software is while handling multi-state apportionment and each state we have to work in. Cons The software is dated. It looks like a dinosaur circa Windows 98 style software. But we're okay with using this as a desktop server-based software until a better more modern offering comes out. I wish UltraTax had better integration with Quickbooks or other tax document reporting systems for more automated data entry. CPA Accounting Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Overall User Friendly" November 13, 2025 4.0 Ultra Tax CS is a great tax software for all users, from beginners to more advanced users. It's easy enough to populate a return and determine where the information should go, whether from forms view or the input view. Ultra Tax CS also works very well with the other Thomson Reuters softwares, so if you have them integrated it saves a lot of time. (Especially with fixed assets and tangible returns!) There are some negatives, (i.e. the price) but overall they don't outweigh the positives for me. Their tech support does not solve problems (including currently over two weeks with being unable to log into the software during tax season). The software is much more expensive than others, cut it does not give you your money's worth! Pros It does work well for complex returns, once you learn the software. It seems to be accurate on most things, although it misses on some state issues. Cons Where to begin - customer service is atrocious. Their add-on practice management product Onvio is sub-par. Their planning software that comes with the product is inferior to Drake's. The quality of the software outweighs the negatives about the price and sales team. Pros The best part of the UT software family is the integration with each other. When something is updated in one spot it is automatically updated across all of the software's. The depreciation software is also way better than the competitors. Cons The pricing and sales team is something to lack. I always say you get what you pay for but the UT pricing is well above the competition and the sales team is slow to respond and doesn't help the small firm. Pros It's very user-friendly; even for new users and inexperienced tax preparers. It's easy to see prior year data and the interaction between data entry and its effect on the forms. Cons It doesn't interact well with some third-party softwares. If your firm mails estimates out on a quarterly basis, it's difficult to produce the associated instructions letter. Do not purchase this overpriced and extremely time consuming software. Pros It is suppose to work hand in hand with the accounting software. It is very cumbersome to get set up with little to no help from Support. Cons Pretty much everything ! I have asked for my money back several times. This is suppose to be a high end software. IF you have HOURS to go thru and set up everything and get the proper training on how to do each phase MAYBE. We signed up end of June and our training didn't start until mid October. We were given 4 - 4hr sessions for the conversion (which we are still fighting) and how to us the program. Quickbooks did not covert well, although we were reassured by the sales people that they did it all the time ! They have lied to me every step of the way. It can take days to get a response. AND now after paying over $20,000 for the accounting and tax software (for this year) we are being sent an invoice for Sales tax that they forgot to add. Switching is painful. Ultratax expensive and horrible." March 26, 2026 1.0 More issues/complaints than not Calls to sustomer service or tech support daily. Usually no answer. Mostly, canned response from people untrained in software and/or tax law and the meeting of the two to utilize the software to generate a tax return. Pros Nothing that any other income tax sotware could provide Ultratax is an expensive program without any value. Cons 1\. support is useless 2. too many issues occur where IRS instructions allow/require a certain reporting and ultratax software does not allow and does not offer a workaround. 3. even with entering "T" and "S" for every income or deduction amount, there is no way to generate a report that compares married filing joint results with married filing separate results. As mentioned above, Ultra Tax is way too complicated and poorly designed and you spend most of your time just trying to navigate this worthless piece of garbage. Pros Nothing at all, there is really not one positive thing I can say about Ultra Tax. I would not recommend UT to anyone. I gave it one star because that entry is required but it is really zero stars. Cons Pretty much everything. Ultra Tax is poorly designed, far too complicated and confusing. Input screens are cluttered up with way too many unnecessary and poorly worded options. Things that should be in plain view and easy to find are hidden under UT's bizarre system of icons and unclear screen headings. Nothing seems to be located where you would logically expect it to be. We are wasting an ungodly amount of time just searching for things that are hidden, we constantly have to google instructions on where to find and navigate commonly used tax return entries. Ultra Tax is far and away the worst program I have ever seen. It clearly was not designed by an accountant or tax preparer, but must have been designed by some computer programming wiz trying to prove they are smarter than everyone else. Now it's very expensive and it's getting so it's not worth the money. Pros the program is easy to use, and integrates with other CS applications Cons \[sensitive content hidden\] did away with e-mail support and expects users to text! I'm sorry, I don't have time to stare at my screen waiting for an answer to a text. They also started using support technicians from out of the country, and the technicians do not understand US taxes. I had one support rep that didn't know what a common form is. E-filing costs $15 per return if you don't purchase unlimited. I can easily enter and plan for my clients who usually need to plan for there taxes ether quarterly or yearly. Cons I don't like the navigation. it not easy learnable in order to learn and navigate. Pros The software is pretty robust. I use ACS (bookkeeping), Ultratax, and FileCabinet daily, and it works well for me. Cons Several times per year the software goes down completely and we aren't able to log in. Sometimes its back up and running in minutes, sometimes its hours, and often its days. Two years ago it was down all weekend right before Apr 15th. The problem is that communication during these outages is worthless (all they ever say is that there's "degraded performance" and "some users might not be able to log in), but that's small comfort when you can't even get into the software during the middle of tax season. September 5, 2023 3.0 Pros Overall, it gets the job done and it is overall user friendly to be able to figure it out. Cons This program is SO SLOW. If you have a large database of clients, especially large returns, I would not recommend ultratax. I wish I could use more than one window so a return could run when I file/assemble it and I can do something in another window, but it does not allow you to do this. The program would shut down more often than it should while I was working. Their customer support was not helpful either. There are a lot of glitches with the Thomson Reuters programs. There are quirks (like any software), but when you cannot figure something out there is essentially nobody there to help at all. Cons When you chat with them online they never help. They always run you in circles or claim that their server isn't working that that you need to call. How would that change anything?
