Pros: I have projects that sometimes require lower fidelity or quick deliverables. The 3D warehouse within SketchUp pro is great because it allows me to quickly place furniture and other models that would typically be time-consuming, and implement them int the setting.

Cons: I think there is room for improvement for adding images/textures to models. It tends to be the one area where I struggle to place images into a specific model. By the time I've placed the image or texture that I want into the model, it's taken me 10 min or more.

Overall: Quick deliverables

Relatively easy to learn, powerful, understandable tools.

Pros: Powerful, easy to learn tools, great workflow and amazing extension support. Many options for toolbar customization that make it a joy to use.

Cons: Several things that are not explained by tutorials, like hidden geometry. Apart from that, not any major issues!

Use to expose students to 3d on the fly visualization.

Pros: Easy to use and pick up -compared to CAD. Great for students. Fast.
3d warehouse is great for scene design kids!
Help is generally ...helpful! which seems like it should be obvious but is more a comment on other software. The tutorial community also helps.

Cons: Can be a little fussy to make sure you're on the surface you want.
Yearly subscription -for a lab in higher Ed-makes it hard to buy the pro every year.

My first drawing program. This software opened my eyes to CAD. Very easy to use for the newbie.

Pros: Very intuitive workflow. Great videos and tutorials to quickly learn the software. Low cost in comparison to very, very expensive CAD software. Great for the small business that just needs to to explain a design...not the final design.

Cons: Exporting the files to some engineers has been troublesome, but overall easy to convert files and transfer to engineering.

Overall: Very easy learning curve and great product! Quick and easy drawings to share new concepts.

Pros: I love the ability to help clients see in a simulated environment what their building is going to look/feel like. The options to use lighting during different parts of the day helps them see the need to address lighting issues/concerns.

Cons: A bit of a learning curve but well worth the effort. If you're not careful, you can quickly build out incorrectly.

Very useful tool for creating 3D objects and plans for furniture or objects.

Pros: The price is very low for what you get. If you know what you are doing , skechup can do just as much as AutoCAD.

Cons: I think the workspace gets a little crowded and also, not as much tech support as CAD, however its still good.

Overall: Great low price, a great advantage from using pen and paper to draw out plans for customers

Pros: Sketchup is very intuitive and easy to use. It is the first software I ever used in drawing a project. Great for showing the 3D model of a project.

Cons: Sketchup is easy to use for a 3D but is more limited if your goal is BIM and comunicating quantity take-off.

Pros: The best thing about sketchup is the ease of use. With only a 20 minute tutorial you can quickly jump into being an intermediate user in Sketchup. This program also has various plugins that make generating great render quality a possibility. By itself, sketchup produces very basic images but with accurate modeling views.

Cons: When projects get very complex in sketchup the program tends to crash. This is better used as a preliminary modeling program and if more complexity is desired, importing into more sophisticated modeling programs like 3D studio or Revit is better. Remember to group EVERYTHING!

Overall: So EASY!

Pros: Simple tu use, fast drawing, starting 3d models and 3d warehouses, extensions, textures, importing of photos and materials, finishing, rendering options, drawing/sketching options, perspective changing, components and objects designing, friendly-used interface, cross-sections, active comunity,...

Cons: Many options are not visible or even expected. Without manual and (several) video tutorials many things that are simple to do You can't be done as they are not explained/offered.

Switching axes sometimes is very irritating.

Deleting a part of object sometimes cause un-expected results.

Pushing/pulling sometimes cause small but irritating problems with surfaces.

Overall: 1st time I heard about SKETCHUP was several years ago. I was looking for some fast sketching solution (preferable in 3d ) and search engine listed this program as near 1st position (and not a CAD). So, I clicked on the link and saw a fantastic piece of software.

After some 8 or 9 years SKETCHUP is still on my computer. It's more poreful than several years before (form SKETCHUP 6, if I remember correctly), there are more materials, components and models (when 3d warehouse started it made a revolution of it's kind, enthusiast could show their models and companies could offer their products and services).

Several things made me a follower/user of this program: simple to use, fast drawing, diferent type of finishing, cross-sections, user-friendly interface, diferent ways to achieve same results (by multyplaying or by dividing, by pulling or following,...), plenty of options and many special features that came during years.

On of the first features was inserting a 3d object on GOOGLE EARTH (GOOGLE was a previous owner). That had a tremenduos effect and in short perid of time every city had many of landmarks made by SKETCHUP and inserted on maps. 3d warehouse was also an succesfull feature.

Interesting feature, also, is "projection and perspective view". Changing this You can switch from "natural" 3d view to "geometrical" 3d view. This is MUST BE USED when You switch from designing to taking measures (hard to describe but imediately visible when used)

Interesting feature, from a few version ago, is to match a photo. You simply load a photo (interior or exterior) and with help from program You model a 3d object, At the end You had a 3d model replica from photo with textures acquired from photo. If You are in real estate business, You understand what can be done regarding virtual demonstrations.

Another nice feature is another warehouse - for extensions. With these addons You can have a completely different way of doing Your job, from drawing, designing or 3d printing.

PRO version have some other usefull features that I like .DWG handling and several types of calculation, reporting (these are important part of my work with it) and exporting results.

If You need a good sollution for 3d sketching, drawing or design, and You don't have time to learn a full CAD software this is software for You.

Recommendations to other buyers: Some sort of assistant would be usefull, to offer possible activities depending on selected tool and object/position on object. With specialized hardware work is done much faster. Why that can't be solved using 2 mouses, for example? Ribbon customizing could be better with more options.

Pros: This software is extremely easy to use.

Cons: The pricing could be a bit lower, given that this software used to be free. However, it is still a great value.

Overall: I like to use this software as a hobby software. I don't use the software in a professional environment. However, I have found it to be very useful when designing spaces in my house, or even for one-off projects I've had in the past. The software is, surprisingly, very easy to use. I think that the versatility of the product allows for multiple types of people to use it - design students, architects, homeowners, etc.

Comments: I learned to use this software several years before entering the professional world. I originally used this software just as a creative outlet, however I was pleased to see that this was used in the professional setting. It is very easy to use, and has some great plugins for when you become more advanced. I wish some of the plugins were free, however this program is well worth the free and paid version.

Comments: SketchUp is a piece of cake to learn. Simply start drawing enclosed surfaces and you are off to the races. Materials can be applied to get very nice renderings. There are a host of free and paid third party applications to make the renderings even better. There is a huge online community that is always willing to help. There are many sites available for pre-modeled content. Take advantage of it and learn from how others build their models.

Pros: Easy to learn and use

Don't have to fight software
Easy to export to other software or to import into (plays well with others, which can't be said about a lot of other software out there)

Cons: Can get messy if you don't know what you are doing and have a large project (Online videos help a lot)

Overall: SketchUp is an excellent software to do anything from basic massing and visualization to completing and producing drawings. It's easy to learn and with only a few basic commands you can get a pretty good model going. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to try to learn how to take 2D drawings to 3D. Great Software.

Recommendations to other buyers: Easy to install and there is usually a free trial so you can try it out. I would recommend watching 1-2 videos before trying but really that's all you need and you can create some awesome models.

Pros: Free to start using (SketchUp Make) to get used to 3D tools and the learning curve is very fast for the basics. It can also produce super complex shapes/designs if you have the conceptual ability.

Cons: Help videos are sometimes outdated with regard to the location of functions which can be frustrating. Pro version provides technical support, but I haven't found it to be as helpful.

Overall: Had a small part that I designed (on paper) that I wanted to 3D print on a MakerBot printer. I started with SketchUp Make and while it takes some time to get used to the controls, once you've 'got it' it's pretty easy to use. The only limits are your conceptualization skills. I upgraded to Pro so I could export CAD files, but haven't really used any of the other upgraded tools.

The online help videos are good, although I have found some use older interfaces so they do not translate directly which can be frustrating. All that being said, for a novice, this is a super economical way to get started in 3D modeling/design.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you don't have any experience in 3D design watching the first set of help videos is key. This is not a software that is easy to just jump in and learn as you go.

Comments: Sketchup is a great tool for someone who is needing to mock up a design for something in 3d, whether they are professional or not. The interface is really easy to use and is intuitive. While it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a professional level 3d animation and modeling tool like Maya, the simplicity of it makes it easy for people to learn and to do basic-to-intermediate 3d in it.

Pros: Easy to learn. Easy to use. Simple on the front end but very powerful as you push its limits. Fast results with minimal input. Integrates easily with other software solutions.

Cons: Limitations working with certain real world conditions (ex - site modeling).

Overall: As a partner at a small architecture firm, selecting the right software for my team is extremely important. SketchUp is our go-to design software to rough out early concepts quickly. The 3D Warehouse is full of pre-built, community sourced stock components to add to our models... and they are free! We use the software to quickly & accurately study massing, material and experience. Our favorite high-end rendering software (Lumion) integrates seamlessly with SketchUp and thre is a direct workflow from Autodesk Revit, making this a no-brainer for our team. The cost for a SketchUp Pro license is set at the right price point.

Recommendations to other buyers: Download the free Make version of the software and start building. You'll fall in love quickly.
