Pros: As far as modeling software, this one takes the cake in terms of how simple it is to use. It is quick to pick up, and super powerful in creating very accurate (down to mm) designs. Excells at floorplans and building designs to scale. Import and export features are adequate, and even supports export for 3D printing.

Cons: It can be limiting if you want to be able to use this software for more than just modeling. There is no real rigging or animation capability, and the texturing features are highly limited (no UV mapping). The price is not too bad considering it is perpetual license, but still quite a mouthful to swallow in one bit.

Overall: Good home designs

Pros: SketchUp is a must have for any 3D projects. The number of available plug-ins is fantastic, allowing you to create amazing projects.

Cons: The online help from SketchUp is very limited, and only gives you basic assistance. Thankfully the number of SketchUp users that make up the online community have provided great tutorials and walk throughs that can answer most questions.

Pros: I love that I can make a realistic 3D model for my clients. If they have a specific photo, texture, or product that they want, I can put it into the model for a realistic view of what it would look like in the space. This has saved a lot of time in hand rendering.

Cons: I wish that it could handle larger files better. Whenever I try to import complicated CAD files or build a complex 3D model, it glitches more often.

Overall: It is integral to my day-to-day job.

My go-to for conceptual design but I am using it less and less.

Pros: I have been using Sketchup for years. I have done very detailed models of projects for rendering and presentations but most of what I use it for now is less detailed massing studies. It is very easy to use once a few tricks are learned. Perhaps the greatest feature is its ease of use. I used to be an avid user but find that I am using other software more to do what I used to in Sketchup.

Cons: I have never used Sketchup for construction documents and it seems like that is what Trimble is really pushing and where they are focusing their development efforts. I know there are those who do construction documents in Sketchup but I don't see the benefit at all. I worry that Sketchup is kind of stuck in between CAD and BIM and is not positioned to compete well with either.

Overall: It is a great tool for conceptual design, massing, etc.

I used it on my undergraduate thesis on Design, when I developed an home appliance. Just great!

Pros: SketchUp is very, very easy to use. When I started, I had little knowledge on 3D softwares. SketchUp is so intuitive I didn't need tutorials or something like it. It's great, and working with V-Ray brings fantastic and realistic renders.

Cons: Nothing! Well, it don't have compatibility with 3D Printers, but, in fact, it's not made to do it. So, it's a software made to engineers and architects, and it's awesome, but to industrial designers it's just as great, but with little limitations.

Overall: It made my undergraduate thesis much more easy.

Pros: This is one of the best 3D modeling software out there for the money. Amazingly easy to learn and use. Produces great graphics and when working with their Layout software can be used to create construction documents.

Cons: There used to be more elements in the free version of the software, and it seems more and more items get added to the Pro version with each release. So the Pro version is getting more and more necessary.

Pros: Sketchup does a great job making something complicated, like 3D modeling, and making it extremely simple. I know some friends with no experience in modeling that have picked this up intuitively. The Pro version allows integrations into other software like Autodesk Revit which increases the value. There are also a number of plugins that allow you to create quality renderings, walkthroughs, animations, and so much more!

Cons: Sketchup is great for preliminary design and visualization but in when the design process gets farther along, it cannot keep up very well. There's no data assigned to Sketchup elements which keeps the model size down but you can't do anything with it other than visualize. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this... It's just a limitation of the software.

Overall: As a general contractor, Sketchup allows us to present models to our clients in simple and intuitive ways without giving them too much information. We have used Sketchup a number of times to create quality graphics for our presentations when selling work as well.

Pros: Overall ease of use is my number one PRO. This software makes it easy to get up and running in no time. I've had a plan to do a 3D view of our house for some upcoming projects and this was a great find for me. I'm able to lay out not only the house, but the yard and landscaping as well. This is really useful for anyone looking to do a large architectural project (to whatever level of intricacy you desire) or a small project for some shelves in the garage.

Cons: There is a somewhat steep learning curve and the software really requires a larger monitor to see everything well. Some of the plugins available to increase capabilities are poorly supported and there are no well-written instructions on how to install or use them effectively. The 3D warehouse is a great idea, but can be onerous to navigate to find exactly what you're looking to find.

Overall: I'm able to learn how to do 3D drawings, plan and implement projects and fine-tune my designs.

After starting to use it, my business increases because my clients see how their projects will look.

Pros: I've been using SketchUp everyday in my line of work for over three years now. It is one of the easiest CAD programs I've used/learned as well as one with some of the best support and communities I've participated in. There are tons of models in the 3D warehouse to learn from or integrate into your own creations. It's for more than just architectural and interior design; I've even used it for animations, pattern making and film!

More importantly, I'm still able to import/export files types outside of SketchUp's. It accepts dwgs, dxf.

Cons: It's too basic at times, so any detailed things you would have to use another program. it also does not look quite as professional, as the graphics are a little lacking. I usually make the 3-d model and then I bring it into photoshop to render for a better look.

Overall: i shortened time of work it took me days to make a 3d model but now i just invest at much four or five ours and the i can start rendering that helps me with the clients normally you ask for two weeks to complete a job but now i can do it in a week

Pros: I have projects that sometimes require lower fidelity or quick deliverables. The 3D warehouse within SketchUp pro is great because it allows me to quickly place furniture and other models that would typically be time-consuming, and implement them int the setting.

Cons: I think there is room for improvement for adding images/textures to models. It tends to be the one area where I struggle to place images into a specific model. By the time I've placed the image or texture that I want into the model, it's taken me 10 min or more.

Overall: Quick deliverables

Pros: Easy to use and pick up -compared to CAD. Great for students. Fast.
3d warehouse is great for scene design kids!
Help is generally ...helpful! which seems like it should be obvious but is more a comment on other software. The tutorial community also helps.

Cons: Can be a little fussy to make sure you're on the surface you want.
Yearly subscription -for a lab in higher Ed-makes it hard to buy the pro every year.

Pros: The best thing about sketchup is the ease of use. With only a 20 minute tutorial you can quickly jump into being an intermediate user in Sketchup. This program also has various plugins that make generating great render quality a possibility. By itself, sketchup produces very basic images but with accurate modeling views.

Cons: When projects get very complex in sketchup the program tends to crash. This is better used as a preliminary modeling program and if more complexity is desired, importing into more sophisticated modeling programs like 3D studio or Revit is better. Remember to group EVERYTHING!

Pros: Simple tu use, fast drawing, starting 3d models and 3d warehouses, extensions, textures, importing of photos and materials, finishing, rendering options, drawing/sketching options, perspective changing, components and objects designing, friendly-used interface, cross-sections, active comunity,...

Cons: Many options are not visible or even expected. Without manual and (several) video tutorials many things that are simple to do You can't be done as they are not explained/offered.

Switching axes sometimes is very irritating.

Deleting a part of object sometimes cause un-expected results.

Pushing/pulling sometimes cause small but irritating problems with surfaces.

Overall: 1st time I heard about SKETCHUP was several years ago. I was looking for some fast sketching solution (preferable in 3d ) and search engine listed this program as near 1st position (and not a CAD). So, I clicked on the link and saw a fantastic piece of software.

After some 8 or 9 years SKETCHUP is still on my computer. It's more poreful than several years before (form SKETCHUP 6, if I remember correctly), there are more materials, components and models (when 3d warehouse started it made a revolution of it's kind, enthusiast could show their models and companies could offer their products and services).

Several things made me a follower/user of this program: simple to use, fast drawing, diferent type of finishing, cross-sections, user-friendly interface, diferent ways to achieve same results (by multyplaying or by dividing, by pulling or following,...), plenty of options and many special features that came during years.

On of the first features was inserting a 3d object on GOOGLE EARTH (GOOGLE was a previous owner). That had a tremenduos effect and in short perid of time every city had many of landmarks made by SKETCHUP and inserted on maps. 3d warehouse was also an succesfull feature.

Interesting feature, also, is "projection and perspective view". Changing this You can switch from "natural" 3d view to "geometrical" 3d view. This is MUST BE USED when You switch from designing to taking measures (hard to describe but imediately visible when used)

Interesting feature, from a few version ago, is to match a photo. You simply load a photo (interior or exterior) and with help from program You model a 3d object, At the end You had a 3d model replica from photo with textures acquired from photo. If You are in real estate business, You understand what can be done regarding virtual demonstrations.

Another nice feature is another warehouse - for extensions. With these addons You can have a completely different way of doing Your job, from drawing, designing or 3d printing.

PRO version have some other usefull features that I like .DWG handling and several types of calculation, reporting (these are important part of my work with it) and exporting results.

If You need a good sollution for 3d sketching, drawing or design, and You don't have time to learn a full CAD software this is software for You.

Recommendations to other buyers: Some sort of assistant would be usefull, to offer possible activities depending on selected tool and object/position on object. With specialized hardware work is done much faster. Why that can't be solved using 2 mouses, for example? Ribbon customizing could be better with more options.

It's easy to learn and with only a few basic commands you can get a pretty good model going. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to try to learn how to take 2D drawings to 3D. Great Software.

Recommendations to other buyers: Easy to install and there is usually a free trial so you can try it out. I would recommend watching 1-2 videos before trying but really that's all you need and you can create some awesome models.

Pros: Free to start using (SketchUp Make) to get used to 3D tools and the learning curve is very fast for the basics. It can also produce super complex shapes/designs if you have the conceptual ability.

Cons: Help videos are sometimes outdated with regard to the location of functions which can be frustrating. Pro version provides technical support, but I haven't found it to be as helpful.

Overall: Had a small part that I designed (on paper) that I wanted to 3D print on a MakerBot printer. I started with SketchUp Make and while it takes some time to get used to the controls, once you've 'got it' it's pretty easy to use. The only limits are your conceptualization skills. I upgraded to Pro so I could export CAD files, but haven't really used any of the other upgraded tools.

The online help videos are good, although I have found some use older interfaces so they do not translate directly which can be frustrating. All that being said, for a novice, this is a super economical way to get started in 3D modeling/design.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you don't have any experience in 3D design watching the first set of help videos is key. This is not a software that is easy to just jump in and learn as you go.

Comments: Sketchup is a great tool for someone who is needing to mock up a design for something in 3d, whether they are professional or not. The interface is really easy to use and is intuitive. While it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a professional level 3d animation and modeling tool like Maya, the simplicity of it makes it easy for people to learn and to do basic-to-intermediate 3d in it.

Pros: It does scaling and dimensioning very well.

Cons: Very difficult to learn and quite clumsy in some of its features.

Overall: SketchUp Pro has a rather steep learning curve. Do not expect to just sit right down and start whipping out magnificent drawings and illustrations, because, unless you are a Pro, that is just not going to happen. The program requires practice, patience, and plenty of both.

Pros: Easy to use. Affordable. New updates are usually significant improvements not just cosmetic changes to justify a new version.

Cons: I have used this more in early project development as the file gets harder to work with the more detail is added.

Overall: SketchUp is most user-friendly 3D modeling software I have used and has really added some great features over the years. It is easy to get going right away though taking some time to understand how layers and components work will be worthwhile, especially if you have used layers in other software packages - they don't work the same way here. I highly recommend SketchUp for quick modeling and visualization. Larger, detailed models can get cumbersome to work with.

Recommendations to other buyers: There are a lot of great plug-ins for this software.

Pros: Ease of use

Cons: Nothing.

Overall: I have been using SketchUp for years. It has helped solve hundreds of construction detail issues and provided me the opportunity to propose high quality field sketches for review. From simple details to complex component models, Sketchup allows users to easily create professional models. Sketchup Pro takes it to another level of functionality and versatility. Hands down favorite drawing tool.

Recommendations to other buyers: There is a vast amount of online support for users.

Pros: Easy to learn. Easy to use. Simple on the front end but very powerful as you push its limits. Fast results with minimal input. Integrates easily with other software solutions.

Cons: Limitations working with certain real world conditions (ex - site modeling).

Overall: As a partner at a small architecture firm, selecting the right software for my team is extremely important. SketchUp is our go-to design software to rough out early concepts quickly. The 3D Warehouse is full of pre-built, community sourced stock components to add to our models... and they are free! We use the software to quickly & accurately study massing, material and experience. Our favorite high-end rendering software (Lumion) integrates seamlessly with SketchUp and thre is a direct workflow from Autodesk Revit, making this a no-brainer for our team. The cost for a SketchUp Pro license is set at the right price point.

Recommendations to other buyers: Download the free Make version of the software and start building. You'll fall in love quickly.
