Pros Easy to install, use, update and manage extensions. Microsoft Visual Studio can be considered one of the best and most complete IDEs currently. Cons As time goes by the software installation is occupying more and more disk space. Typical installations require between 20GB and 50GB of free space. Also, newer versions require a minimum of 4GB or 8GB of RAM. Pros It is by far the best IDE for .NET application. I have used this for 4 years now for C# programming along with Selenium for Automated testing. It provides good Intellisense, efficient debug tools, extensions, contextual help. You can also use other languages by accessing necessary plugins and extensions. It is easy to create you own repository, clone repository, switch between branches, commit code, create a Pull Request, commit changes for Conflicts in code between 2 branches while merging. Cons I dislike the fact that sometimes the UI just freezes and you have to exit the application and re-open. They release new version so frequently that it can be a pain at times to keep up with their updates. Large projects does not load instantly if you do not open in Admin mode. Sometimes, it unnecessarily adds random changes in your commit - which you did not even add code for! I must say it is one of the best IDEs for C# language. Developers in our team use Visual studio for maintaining the code and testers use it to write automated test using Selenium. Pros Visual Studio has a lot of features like managing user defined nuget packages, debugging, configuration for different environments, etc. The most helpful is integration of other applications that can be added as extensions. Allowing Git to be integrated is a savior for coders to maintain the version control with ease. Also, QA in our team have integrated Resharper which allows them to run/debug UI tests. Cons New users may find it intimidating initially to use Visual Studio given that there are a lot of features to explore and get a hang of it. Once, you start using it, you will understand how easy it is. All IDEs are heavy. For your growing code, building the code might get slower and sometimes you may need to restart the application. We work on C#, .net and use this for development work. Its debugging is easy and efficient. It has multiple other features like SQL connection center, TFS plugin, Intilltrace etc that help a developer to create a perfect bug free code. You can use visual studio for many languages like C#, VB, c++ etc Cons Some features are version dependent like for eg Intiltrace its only in 2013 Ultimate and not available in any other version. They have now implemented hot reloading and this is nearly always working. Especially when it comes to modifying and fine tuning an existing algorithm I can now work much faster. Color scheme/Themes is honestly a big part of the way I read code and I found VS to have some great schemes, and good amount of custimization options for display purposes. I also felt like I was able to program pretty efficiently on VS once I got the hang of it after working solely with Eclipse. Feel like there were a lot of tools I never got a chance to use, but likely will when I use the program on more advanced projects. Pros Easy to customize themes, and colors as well as shortcuts and hot-keys. Intuitive layout and design, with an un-cluttered interface. The program feels well-thought out and planned in terms of programming on it. I like to increase my efficiency as well as organization through my IDE and I found VS to helpful in achieving that. Also, was easy to go back and undo/redo any recent changes you make which I cannot say is the case for all IDE's, found VS made this simple and accessible for users. Cons I found that closing out windows like Solution Explorer and trying to reopen them was difficult and a poorly designed/implemented feature. I also felt like I would have some inconsistencies in the Solution Explorer itself when trying to create a new .cpp or .h file. Sometimes I would add it and it felt like VS didn't recognize it properly and may have caused issues with my program. I have used the same types of other products and IDEs but I found them difficult and they were a bit uncomfortable. Pros IDE for programmers that I find it to be the best is one that offers extensions making it convenient to write code in any programming language. Its search and filtering capabilities allow for navigation through files. Additionally it is lightweight. Can be installed on platforms such, as Windows or Ubuntu. Cons The platform is very broad which may cause it to run slowly on devices and cannot work on weak devices. When installed, it will take up about 5GB of disk space excluding other add-ons.
