Most STEM courses didn't use it because it was easier to maintain a single course website with lecture notes and homework sets easily accessible and in a condensed format. Humanities courses with many unique readings every week benefitted from the file sharing features. With Moodle, your mileage may vary. Its convenience and utility greatly depends on the needs of the course, and I would not consider it the best or only solution in course management. Pros My university used Moodle until the fall semester of 2020 as the main course management system. Instructors could share files and log grades in the class page all in one place, which made it easier for students to access course materials scattered across PDFs and website links (compared to combing through emails, for example). Cons Moodle feels... impersonal. The homepage shows all courses offered by the institution instead of just the courses in which the student is enrolled. The sidebar shows numerous options (such as Site Pages) that are never used by my institution. It was telling that instructors still usually sent emails directly to students instead of posting on the class page. Moodle is a good supplement to course management, but (at least for my institution) not comprehensive. Review Source Shaunak P. February 19, 2022 4.0 The best part behind choosing Moodle is the flexibility of customization that is brought to you by an Open-source platform. I have mentioned in pros itself, it serves its purpose as hard as concrete. Pros What I love most about this product is its widespread existence in Industry. It just serves the purpose it intends to. Community support is excellent because it was one of its kind in earlier days. It is easy to implement as major confusing features are absent already. Cons There are no such cons that I have discovered, though looking that its UI's intuitiveness, I personally feel that it should be a little modern, it still feels like accessing some old school 20 years back features on the web. I also felt the need for documentation and some ready-made templates, because it needs too much implementation to build the view of what the end-users will see. Pros Moodle is pretty inexpensive, which is why we were willing to give it a try. It had quite a bit for the low cost. Cons Moodle has the potential to be wonderful, but there are just a number of inconsistencies that made us end up seeking a better solution. The User Interface is not terribly intuitive, leading to a number of complaints by end users. There were also quite unexpected outages or bugs that frustrated our team and students. It's just too inconsistent to rely on. It is a very good complement for the schools own websites. Pros I think moodle has the potential to be very useful if teachers have a comon strategy of how they are representing the information in their courses. The program itself is easy to understand and integrate with but I often find my self looking for things that the teachers often put in different places... Cons I think there are to many ways for teachers to present their information to students today. If you have multible courses it feels like you need to re-learn how that specifik teacher integrate with Moodle. He/she can have a totally different way of structuring their course compared to other teachers. It is very time conuming to never know were to find the information you are looking for. Before Moodle we are using Dokeos, so the new functionalities we can found in Moodle were great for our remote classes and evaluations. The learning curve is not so smooth, but thanks to the enormous and great community behind this tool, you can sort all the obstacles you find in the beginning. I don't miss Dokeos at all; I think the change was the right decision; however, the user interface is something that Moodle should modernize. Pros Excellent set of features. You can find all you need from an LMS and much more. Easy to use from the teacher and student perspective. Cons Even with the user interface update and transformation, Moodle still looks old. I like the instant feedback of grades if the professors are prompt in grading. Pros I like that I can track my grades, submit assignments in the drop boxes and take quizzes. this is a good program for keeping track of assignments weekly. I like the check box feature which allows me to check off files I have viewed or quizzes I have completed which allows me to not keep clicking on powerpoint files I have already downloaded. Cons I dislike how if you have an administrator of the page such as a professor who is not savvy with technology or does not keep up with the moodle page, it looks like you have a bad grade if certain things aren't entered correctly or if they haven't corrected things. It also has limitations of any online platform where the administrator doesn't make the file or quiz visible and then they have a hard time seeing why the students havent done the assignment. I only used canvas briefly, but I think it was slightly better in its ease of use, but I am not very familiar with moodle so it is hard to compare ease of use from the student prospective. The alerts and messaging system is a little clunky and I prefer to use email instead. you have to change your preferences or you will get way too many email notifications every time someone comments on a massive discussion post. Pros I like that it is widespread and used by most universities. Academicians at different universities were also familiar with this software. Also easy to use. Cons The mobile app is faulty. Sometimes connection problems can be experienced with business emails. It is a bad problem that it is not possible to connect with corporate e-mail addresses when accessing via personal e-mail. Interface is a bit ugly, it can be improved.
