I think it is a very capable estimating platform, particularly for commercial roofing, where estimates can become extremely detailed and involve a large number of materials, conditions, labor components, and pricing variables. The ability to perform the takeoff and build the estimate within the same platform is one of its biggest advantages. I also find the customization and depth of the system valuable because it allows us to build estimates around our own materials, labor rates, assemblies, and estimating practices rather than forcing everything into a generic format. At the same time, I think there is room for improvement in the overall user experience. Some processes could be more intuitive and efficient, and navigating larger estimates can sometimes feel more cumbersome than it should. That said, once you understand how the software is structured and have your databases and estimating practices established, The EDGE can be a very powerful tool. For commercial roofing, I think its trade-specific functionality is one of its strongest attributes. Pros The biggest strength of The EDGE is how well it integrates the takeoff and estimating processes into one system. Being able to perform the takeoff and have those quantities flow directly into the estimate is a major advantage, particularly on larger commercial roofing projects. I also like the depth of the roofing-specific database and the ability to build and customize conditions, assemblies, materials, labor, and pricing around how our company actually estimates work. The roofing-specific functionality is another major positive, especially for items such as tapered insulation, fasteners, standing seam, and the various components that can make commercial roofing estimates complicated. The ability to create scenarios and make changes without having to rebuild the estimate is also very useful for alternates, value engineering, and change orders. Overall, The EDGE has a lot of depth and gives an experienced estimator a great deal of control over the estimate. Cons The biggest downside to The EDGE is that its depth can also make it more complicated than it needs to be. There are a lot of capabilities within the software, but some functions and workflows are not particularly intuitive, especially when you are trying to accomplish something outside of the more basic estimating process. The user interface and navigation could also use some modernization and streamlining. I would like to see fewer steps required for common estimating tasks and more flexibility in how information is viewed and manipulated within an estimate. Working with large, complicated commercial roofing estimates can also become cumbersome, particularly when you need to make widespread changes or review a large amount of information. I think the software has the functionality to be an excellent estimating platform, but the user experience could be improved significantly. Better navigation, more efficient editing tools, and a more streamlined workflow would make the software much easier to use without sacrificing the depth that makes it valuable. The user interface for entering information is intuitive. It has reduced my takeoff time by having saved templates and being able to combine conditions (like putting the coping cap in the wall flashing condition). Cons If the back end/database portion could be more user friendly and less "coding" that would be helpful. I've tried a few other estimating software systems over the years and in my opinion The Edge is at the top of the pack. Pros My favorite part of The Edge is that it is user friendly. The condition builder is fantastic with it's various tabs at the top to guide you thru building your assemblies. That gives me more confidence in putting my estimate together vs. building an assembly in what looks like an Excel spreadsheet as many other estimating software system do. Cons That the AI take-off module is a separate software. Hopefully there will be some improvements with this technology in the upcoming years and eventually the AI take-off could be integrated into The Edge vs. having 2 software systems 'talk' to each other. It's easy to do a take-off on a small project in a few hours and a larger one in a few days if you use project conditions, common conditions, and duplicates. Pros On the occasion when we take-off projects with multiple rooms or floors, using project and common conditions makes our take-off very efficient. I have 30 years' experience estimating and have used MC2, HCSS HeavyBid, Excel spreadsheets, and even pencil on paper. The Edge is one of the easier estimating software program to use. It took me about a week to learn 85% of the program. It is fairly intuitive. There's enough flexibility that you can adapt it to almost any situation. Cons Assigning User Codes, Cost Codes, and SOV Codes can be tedious. It is built for metal stud and drywall take-off. It would be nice to have conditions built for wood stud framing.
