For a contractor bidding a high volume of commercial roofing work, it's worth that investment, though I'd recommend planning for the setup time and training rather than expecting it to be plug-and-play. Pros The biggest advantage is that it's built specifically for roofing, not adapted from a general construction platform. Assemblies, material relationships, and labor production think the way a roofing estimator does, so a membrane system with insulation, cover board, fasteners, adhesives, and flashings rolls up logically without rebuilding it every bid. Cons The initial setup takes real time. Getting assemblies, material pricing, and labor rates dialed in to match how we actually build is a significant up-front investment, and keeping pricing current requires ongoing discipline. September 24, 2026 5.0 My overall experience with The EDGE has been a 10/10 for the decade that I have had the pleasure of having this tool at my disposal. You could offer me a massive salary but if having access to The EDGE was not part of the package, no deal. Pros The EDGE is the gold standard when it comes to takeoff & estimating software! The ease of setting up a new bid, combined with the powerful database that is at the core of the software, I cannot ever see myself using anything else. I like the intuitive process of going through a takeoff, which makes it almost impossible to forget a required item. The built-in checks that the software integrates into the platform provide safety rails which prevent errors from going unnoticed. When it comes time to hand a project off to the field team(s), the reports that you can generate in The EDGE provide a clear and concise picture of the project. Cons While The EDGE is a very powerful platform, that comes with the downside of not being very user friendly when it comes to operating on the back end of the software. If you know what you are doing, it's not all that complicated....but if you don't, you can mess things up in a hurry and cause the software to be unusable. I think it is a very capable estimating platform, particularly for commercial roofing, where estimates can become extremely detailed and involve a large number of materials, conditions, labor components, and pricing variables. The ability to perform the takeoff and build the estimate within the same platform is one of its biggest advantages. I also find the customization and depth of the system valuable because it allows us to build estimates around our own materials, labor rates, assemblies, and estimating practices rather than forcing everything into a generic format. At the same time, I think there is room for improvement in the overall user experience. Some processes could be more intuitive and efficient, and navigating larger estimates can sometimes feel more cumbersome than it should. That said, once you understand how the software is structured and have your databases and estimating practices established, The EDGE can be a very powerful tool. For commercial roofing, I think its trade-specific functionality is one of its strongest attributes. Pros The biggest strength of The EDGE is how well it integrates the takeoff and estimating processes into one system. Being able to perform the takeoff and have those quantities flow directly into the estimate is a major advantage, particularly on larger commercial roofing projects. I also like the depth of the roofing-specific database and the ability to build and customize conditions, assemblies, materials, labor, and pricing around how our company actually estimates work. The roofing-specific functionality is another major positive, especially for items such as tapered insulation, fasteners, standing seam, and the various components that can make commercial roofing estimates complicated. The ability to create scenarios and make changes without having to rebuild the estimate is also very useful for alternates, value engineering, and change orders. Overall, The EDGE has a lot of depth and gives an experienced estimator a great deal of control over the estimate. Cons The biggest downside to The EDGE is that its depth can also make it more complicated than it needs to be. There are a lot of capabilities within the software, but some functions and workflows are not particularly intuitive, especially when you are trying to accomplish something outside of the more basic estimating process. The user interface and navigation could also use some modernization and streamlining. I would like to see fewer steps required for common estimating tasks and more flexibility in how information is viewed and manipulated within an estimate. Working with large, complicated commercial roofing estimates can also become cumbersome, particularly when you need to make widespread changes or review a large amount of information. I think the software has the functionality to be an excellent estimating platform, but the user experience could be improved significantly. Better navigation, more efficient editing tools, and a more streamlined workflow would make the software much easier to use without sacrificing the depth that makes it valuable. When there are issues, the tech support is generally responsive and able to solve the problem. Pros The UI and familiar feel of the program. Most operations are intuitive which speeds up take-offs. Compared to other programs, it takes less effort to take someone from no experience to proficient in short order. Cons Integration with Foundation is quite poor specifically regarding material lists. Easy to review and adjust projects, the PDF viewer and page creationg can have some minor improvements. Pros The easy way to build an estimate. For roofing it is really easy to adjust conditions to meet your project needs. Cons In some cases it crash when working abroad. Review Source R Reviewer Estimator Used the software for: 1-3 years ### "Tough to learn but once its set up its a smooth system" May 17, 2017 3.0 I am in my late twenty's and nowhere near a computer genius but also not computer illiterate and my experience with this system was it is super confusing to set up and learn but once the program is set up to how you usually take off projects it works nicely. This is not an out of the box system at all. If you are making a complete change from paper take off's and excel sheets like my company was it will take weeks and months to get this to work how you want. We have taken two trips, 1 week each, to their headquarters to have our database's set up along with countless hours and minutes of phone calls to their tech department. The owner who bought the program said that we should be able to figure out most of the database setup in house. I can tell you after going to in house training twice there is absolutely no way I would have known how to set this up. After 1 1/2 years of using the system I still find it confusing at times when you aren't doing simple jobs. We mainly use EDGE for Acoustical Ceiling take off's. That also seemed like the easiest to get set up. 99% of the time this works perfectly but there are some jobs that just doesn't seem to calculate right, in particular long hall ways and curves. We most recently had our databases set up for Fireproofing, EIFS, and DEFS. I have to say once the fireproofing is set up it is a complete life saver. The way the old estimator here would do fireproofing take off's was very mistake filled because the hundreds of factors to take into account i.e UL Codes, thicknesses, member sizes, etc. DEFS also works quite nicely but that is a fairly simple take off, square footage with your materials and labor associated with that square footage. We are still working a few bugs out of our EIFS take off's. They aren't quite where we want them on the labor side so I am constantly checking them with our existing excel formulas we have used for years. The people that work for the EDGE, in particular the training and tech support, are always more than willing to help out and are always friendly. My biggest gripe with the system is the difficulty of getting set up initially and also when you come across something unique getting it to work in the program. Once the leg work is done to get the system set up like you like the program really does run smooth. In the long run it is a giant time saver. For example a 50k sqft ACT job that used to take a whole day to take off on paper literally takes minutes. The implementation team members, the customer support, and the technical support are always there to provide the best service. Pros The EDGE does a great job of meeting the needs of the roofing industry. Complexity in simplicity, you can easily create a complex assembly in a short amount of time. The user interface for entering information is intuitive. Cons Some fields, such as the insulation tabs in a general roofing assembly, limit the quantity of layers/types of layers, requiring a workaround. Cons If the back end/database portion could be more user friendly and less "coding" that would be helpful. More modules on basic tasks and advanced tasks would be helpful when needed a quick reminder on how to do a task. i.e. it was very difficult finding info or someone who knew how to correctly create a soffit condition. I've tried a few other estimating software systems over the years and in my opinion The Edge is at the top of the pack. Pros My favorite part of The Edge is that it is user friendly. The condition builder is fantastic with it's various tabs at the top to guide you thru building your assemblies. That gives me more confidence in putting my estimate together vs. building an assembly in what looks like an Excel spreadsheet as many other estimating software system do. Cons That the AI take-off module is a separate software. Hopefully there will be some improvements with this technology in the upcoming years and eventually the AI take-off could be integrated into The Edge vs. having 2 software systems 'talk' to each other. It has reduced my takeoff time by having saved templates and being able to combine conditions (like putting the coping cap in the wall flashing condition). Cons When I click to check out a bid it ask me if I really want to check out the Scenario. I would not have clicked to open it if I didn't want to. Cons Apply equipment from General Conditions could use some tweaking to better understand actual unit costs specifically as it relates to the waterproofing database.
