Easy to review and adjust projects, the PDF viewer and page creationg can have some minor improvements. Pros The easy way to build an estimate. For roofing it is really easy to adjust conditions to meet your project needs. Cons In some cases it crash when working abroad. I've tried a few other estimating software systems over the years and in my opinion The Edge is at the top of the pack. Pros My favorite part of The Edge is that it is user friendly. The condition builder is fantastic with it's various tabs at the top to guide you thru building your assemblies. That gives me more confidence in putting my estimate together vs. building an assembly in what looks like an Excel spreadsheet as many other estimating software system do. Cons That the AI take-off module is a separate software. Hopefully there will be some improvements with this technology in the upcoming years and eventually the AI take-off could be integrated into The Edge vs. having 2 software systems 'talk' to each other. Estimator Construction Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Tough to learn but once its set up its a smooth system" April 10, 2017 3.0 I am in my late twenty's and nowhere near a computer genius but also not computer illiterate and my experience with this system was it is super confusing to set up and learn but once the program is set up to how you usually take off projects it works nicely. This is not an out of the box system at all. If you are making a complete change from paper take off's and excel sheets like my company was it will take weeks and months to get this to work how you want. We have taken two trips, 1 week each, to their headquarters to have our database's set up along with countless hours and minutes of phone calls to their tech department. The owner who bought the program said that we should be able to figure out most of the database setup in house. I can tell you after going to in house training twice there is absolutely no way I would have known how to set this up. After 1 1/2 years of using the system I still find it confusing at times when you aren't doing simple jobs. We mainly use EDGE for Acoustical Ceiling take off's. That also seemed like the easiest to get set up. 99% of the time this works perfectly but there are some jobs that just doesn't seem to calculate right, in particular long hall ways and curves. We most recently had our databases set up for Fireproofing, EIFS, and DEFS. I have to say once the fireproofing is set up it is a complete life saver. The way the old estimator here would do fireproofing take off's was very mistake filled because the hundreds of factors to take into account i.e UL Codes, thicknesses, member sizes, etc. DEFS also works quite nicely but that is a fairly simple take off, square footage with your materials and labor associated with that square footage. We are still working a few bugs out of our EIFS take off's. They aren't quite where we want them on the labor side so I am constantly checking them with our existing excel formulas we have used for years. The people that work for the EDGE, in particular the training and tech support, are always more than willing to help out and are always friendly. My biggest gripe with the system is the difficulty of getting set up initially and also when you come across something unique getting it to work in the program. Once the leg work is done to get the system set up like you like the program really does run smooth. In the long run it is a giant time saver. For example a 50k sqft ACT job that used to take a whole day to take off on paper literally takes minutes. I feel it's accuracy and customization features for our scopes puts us a step higher than our competition. I would highly recommend this product for your estimating needs. Pros Customer support, accuracy, reports, being able to customize your own databases, groups & conditions. Set up is pretty easy for our techs. The admin portal is also an excellent resource. They stay on top of bugs and issues. A great tool for bidding & estimates. Security seems pretty tight too. As far as value for the money, it tends to lean towards the pricier side of estimating programs. I do feel it does give us an edge, though. Cons I feel it can be a little too deep sometimes. A cut & paste for the conditions from the take off screen tree would be extremely convenient. It also does not always start on the most recent condition that you edited. It will often begin the takeoff from the last condition that you used rather than the last condition that you edited. I used it at my two companies, later introduced to two other companies where I worked after I sold my company. I've since retired and came back and have now introduced it to the two new companies that I work with. \[sensitive content hidden\] has always been there for me and very helpful. The support team has always been available and very helpful. The EDGE has provided me with as accurate an estimate that one could produce, and also provides the means to purchase and manage a project with materials and labor, as long as the user takes the time to dial in his database and insert the correct information. Pros I've used it for 14 years now, and there simply isn't a better software out there. I like the way I can manipulate all areas of the program to suit our personal needs. Cons The change to version 12 from version 10 introduced auto panning by running the cursor to the edge of the screen. This is great, but in Version 10, the arrow keys moved the screen around very quickly and was more user friendly. In version 12, the arrow keys work, but they barely move the screen, so it's no longer useful. It's easy to do a take-off on a small project in a few hours and a larger one in a few days if you use project conditions, common conditions, and duplicates. Pros On the occasion when we take-off projects with multiple rooms or floors, using project and common conditions makes our take-off very efficient. I have 30 years' experience estimating and have used MC2, HCSS HeavyBid, Excel spreadsheets, and even pencil on paper. The Edge is one of the easier estimating software program to use. It took me about a week to learn 85% of the program. It is fairly intuitive. There's enough flexibility that you can adapt it to almost any situation. Cons Assigning User Codes, Cost Codes, and SOV Codes can be tedious. It is built for metal stud and drywall take-off. It would be nice to have conditions built for wood stud framing. Cons Because you can customize so much, there are a few areas that really need to be double and triple checked to make sure everything is correct. But like my "Cons" list and my review title suggests - It's getting there (slowly). Right now, we're about at a 70-75% satisfaction rate for Edge 12. There is still a lot of work to be done to return to the quality of ease provided by Edge 10, and I don't doubt that it will eventually get to where we're 100% satisfied. Pros The Estimating Edge is one of the best (if not the very best) estimating software programs available on the market. It is easy to use, and the upgrades they made to the Edge 12 (compared to Edge 10) have sped up the estimating process (overall). Streamlined and accurate, we trust The Edge (and their customer service team) to provide us with everything we need. Cons Still very buggy and glitchy. The Edge 12.6 had fixed many of the issues that were prevalent since Edge 12 was first released; however, there are still glitches. Blurry drawings, slow response/lag time on mouse clicks, etc. But least favorable was the fact that they took away most of the aspects of Edge 10 that made it SUPER user-friendly, and it's not nearly as user-friendly as Edge 10. Their claim of "Less Clicks" for Edge 12 has proven to be inaccurate, as we often spend more time clicking through pages than we did when we had Edge 10. I understand New software needs testing to fix any bugs and issues but testing this software with my business is not appreciated. I hope to hold more trust in the edge software in the future but for now i am hesitant and require extra time to assess any bids before submitting. \*In future versions and updates I would love to see a module to allow you to view your take off in 3 dimensional views especially when constructing tapered insulation packages. being able to see each bored in a tapered layout would allow more exact tapered estimates. Pros Very detailed and easy to use format. Love the Tapered module. Cons Version 12 has many issues. Very glitchy, and concerning when it comes to producing bids. A mistake made by the Edge can be lethal to our business. Had such errors with our tax amount disappearing and leaving our bids without tax included. Fastener count being all over the place jacking up the bid price. The recap screen does not refresh right away after changes are made. Also aesthetic nuisances such as similar items not merging together. I don't like the new visual format of the new edge. Very Cold and bland. The off and On buttons are confusing looks like everything is off. Dull colors. looking at numbers is tiring I need stimulation with more color. Like the program a lot and it fits our company well enough for the estimating team. Pros The versatility of creating different conditions. The ability to quickly add conditions. The accuracy of the calculations. Cons Not able to stack hyper links from page to page. Need to track details from Elevations back to enlarged details. Sometimes this will be three to four pages back into the documents. Do not have the ability to add notes, lines, clouds, bubbles, etc... to the take-off page. Can only add notes in one line and not a paragraph type setting. Need better options in printing out take-off, annotations come out too large and it does not print out correctly on 11x17 size paper. I was relatively new to construction and it allowed e to be very productive with limited knowledge. Cons I was missing simple commands, such as delete buttons and ability to pan. We are now using version 12 with the cloud. What I like most about the this program is the ease of use and how it reduces my time estimating. With the time saved, I am able to take that time and be productive with other task during the day. Cons the Edge is a great program and if I had of to choose something that I like least I would say, the setup and not having the ability to transfer job information into our accounting and project management program. Like that they keep doing upgrades but get kind of hard to get all the estimators in our company to upgrade to the most current version every time one comes out. April 3, 2017 3.0 I have been using the EDGE software for 3 years now and have found the software to be Useful in estimating our roofing projects. There are a lot of capabilities that software offers, but I haven't scratched the surface of using it to its full potential . The software is not very intuitive for new users and takes a while to learn to use the software correctly. We did have a technician come to our shop for some training a month ago. It has greatly helped but there are still many things that I need to learn. It would be nice to have a back button and the onscreen takeoff software to be able to snap to points on the original drawing the way BlueBeam Pdf. software works. Overall the product is good, but could improve on the ease of use. Pros I like the tapered insulation take-off it preforms for flat roofing Cons The ease of use and the inability to navigate easily between details and pages.
