Easy to review and adjust projects, the PDF viewer and page creationg can have some minor improvements. Pros The easy way to build an estimate. For roofing it is really easy to adjust conditions to meet your project needs. Cons In some cases it crash when working abroad. I feel it's accuracy and customization features for our scopes puts us a step higher than our competition. I would highly recommend this product for your estimating needs. Pros Customer support, accuracy, reports, being able to customize your own databases, groups & conditions. Set up is pretty easy for our techs. The admin portal is also an excellent resource. They stay on top of bugs and issues. A great tool for bidding & estimates. Security seems pretty tight too. As far as value for the money, it tends to lean towards the pricier side of estimating programs. I do feel it does give us an edge, though. Cons I feel it can be a little too deep sometimes. A cut & paste for the conditions from the take off screen tree would be extremely convenient. It also does not always start on the most recent condition that you edited. It will often begin the takeoff from the last condition that you used rather than the last condition that you edited. Estimator Construction Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Tough to learn but once its set up its a smooth system" April 10, 2017 3.0 I am in my late twenty's and nowhere near a computer genius but also not computer illiterate and my experience with this system was it is super confusing to set up and learn but once the program is set up to how you usually take off projects it works nicely. This is not an out of the box system at all. If you are making a complete change from paper take off's and excel sheets like my company was it will take weeks and months to get this to work how you want. We have taken two trips, 1 week each, to their headquarters to have our database's set up along with countless hours and minutes of phone calls to their tech department. The owner who bought the program said that we should be able to figure out most of the database setup in house. I can tell you after going to in house training twice there is absolutely no way I would have known how to set this up. After 1 1/2 years of using the system I still find it confusing at times when you aren't doing simple jobs. We mainly use EDGE for Acoustical Ceiling take off's. That also seemed like the easiest to get set up. 99% of the time this works perfectly but there are some jobs that just doesn't seem to calculate right, in particular long hall ways and curves. We most recently had our databases set up for Fireproofing, EIFS, and DEFS. I have to say once the fireproofing is set up it is a complete life saver. The way the old estimator here would do fireproofing take off's was very mistake filled because the hundreds of factors to take into account i.e UL Codes, thicknesses, member sizes, etc. DEFS also works quite nicely but that is a fairly simple take off, square footage with your materials and labor associated with that square footage. We are still working a few bugs out of our EIFS take off's. They aren't quite where we want them on the labor side so I am constantly checking them with our existing excel formulas we have used for years. The people that work for the EDGE, in particular the training and tech support, are always more than willing to help out and are always friendly. My biggest gripe with the system is the difficulty of getting set up initially and also when you come across something unique getting it to work in the program. Once the leg work is done to get the system set up like you like the program really does run smooth. In the long run it is a giant time saver. For example a 50k sqft ACT job that used to take a whole day to take off on paper literally takes minutes. I used it at my two companies, later introduced to two other companies where I worked after I sold my company. I've since retired and came back and have now introduced it to the two new companies that I work with. \[sensitive content hidden\] has always been there for me and very helpful. The support team has always been available and very helpful. The EDGE has provided me with as accurate an estimate that one could produce, and also provides the means to purchase and manage a project with materials and labor, as long as the user takes the time to dial in his database and insert the correct information. More description on the items to the left as to what they are below them would be very helpful. Pros Still Learning but to be able to capture zones as GC's require breakouts more and more. And for Alternates to be able to quickly shut areas to recalculate bids and alternate pricing quickly. Plus the ability to create budgets easier and faster Cons Trying to locate Sheets, when images are downloaded the come out in different orders, ie it will go 1 36, 37 38 39, 40, 2, 55 56 57, 3, etc. not sure why it does that. It has gone through some major "version" changes over the years. I have always been an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type person. However, I've decided that all of the version changes ended up being useful and/or necessary in the long run. Pros I see it as a full-blown roofing estimating program with all the reports I would ever need. Great customer support. I still bid a few projects by hand, but probably 95% of my bidding is using the EDGE. Performance and speed seem great, but I've never used any other estimating programs to compare it with. As for value for the money, I've never had the opportunity to compare it with other programs. I've had no problems with security. Cons When I was informed that I HAD to switch over to Ver.-10 from Ver.-7.9, since they were no longer going to support 7.9, I was not able to save ANY of my "hundreds" of previous jobs from the past 20+ years. It also didn't allow me to transfer ANY of my custom data base that I had built over the past 20+ years. That switch was a very uncomfortable time for me. Me, as an user for less than a year, learned pretty quickly how to navigate. UL is still not correct, but we can adjust as needed. Overall great tool and help, from the manual calculating. Not quite sure how much security we have. EDGE updates is pretty frequently, per received emails. Performance is great, sometimes the speed is slower even to open it, but that could be online version as well? over all good product. Pros EDGE generates exact price and hrs needed. At the same time you have an overlook of the cost breakout. I use it for bidding almost daily. It is a good value as it helps with accuracy and saves time and money. Cons Many fine tuning has to happen in order to have all works correctly. We still adjust hours in the summary. I asked a question and never got the answer if Report Spray Chart and a drawing can be on the same page? We have to combine 2 pages in 1 for our field. Pros I like how intuitive the program is and the fact that there are almost infinite amounts of customization available. Cons Because you can customize so much, there are a few areas that really need to be double and triple checked to make sure everything is correct. There are also a few bugs when rounding up that reset some items that cannot be rounded back to 1. This can cost you a lot if say you have a crane rental at $3500 and you plug in 6 days of that, then round all the other products up and the rental goes back to 1 and you miss it. August 7, 2022 5.0 I am a huge fan of the EDGE, I have been given the great opportunity to have this tool available to me at my job. I have not used other estimating software besides EXCEL spreadsheet calculators so I cannot compare it to other software, But I have researched other estimating software and their features do not seem to match what the EDGE can offer. Pros The best feature I like is the ability to copy a job or conditions and use them on a new job. once you figure out how to navigate much of the tools on the EDGE, you can create a new job with similar conditions to a previous job and whip out the bid faster than starting from scratch. More bids completed in less time is a Good Thing! Cons I have no cons, at first when we switched from version 10 to 12 it seemed unnecessary as we were so used to the Version 10. After using it for a while there is actually not much difference. We began using the edge years ago using the digitizing boards to now using Version 12 with the cloud based system and image manager. There have been several changes within the last 10 yrs and I am pleased to say your help and customer support has been great. I am looking forward to integrating our company into the newest Version 12. Pros The software makes bidding and adjusting new/existing projects easy and consistent. Setting up the software to our company's specific job codes is also crucial for our estimating and cost tracking process. Cons on the current Version 12 I am having difficulties adding images to an existing condition/bid. The ease of use seems harder than the pervious Version 10. I would like to alter our overhead costs by entering a numerical number in lieu of consistently adjusting the percentages to match the overhead I want on a given project. Reason for choosing The EDGE We purchased the Edge as our first computerized estimating software and have had no reason to look elsewhere as the Software has continually changed and updated with the times and the software costs seem consistent with industry standards. Please see my thoughts below. 1. Look up Database (Misc., stud, board, anything) shows No items to display happens a few times a month. Have to restart Edge. 2. Option to lock in Board heights so that it does not change when changing stud heights. 3. 6 Mil poly Labour shows up under prices. 4. More Track options in soffits. Can have 8 stud types but only 2 tracks. 5. Option to automatically allow for curved/flex tracks at walls plus arch bead and ¼ board at soffitss and arch molding at ceilings when using convert to arch 6. Allow same bead ( 3 counts) options for furred walls as there is for regular partitions. 7. There is a user code for special labour but not for special material. 8. Molding swap outs for acoustic ceilings to allow for C channel @ radiant heat panels and flex molding at curved walls 9. Would like an undo button for deleting conditions, pages etc. 10. Add a Notes page that can be added to the pages tab to put reminders, scope items, exclusions, etc. 11. Option to save Stocking and other Reports as pdf for e-mailing to suppliers. 12. Add condition for ceiling board swap outs 13. Multi condition selection tool does not always capture interior soffit, ocl. (May be more, only noticed with this one) Again I would like to reiterate that day to day I love the EDGE, these are just a few things i've noticed over the past couple of years. Pros EDGE is a very advanced app with great capabilities. It makes estimating process for new bids or contracts and any additional work required done with ease. Using EDGE, it will be easy to ensure that you get accurate quotes, in addition to its ability to evaluate the actual quantities available to the company and take these quantities into account when making any new pricing operations. Cons There is nothing worth mentioning, it may seem a bit complicated for the beginners, the user just needs some training to get acquainted with all the tools and tasks that can be performed using it. The simple design of the user interface makes it quite easy to use, and their technical department is very responsive to questions and dealing with the back-of-house operations if changes with-in the program need to be done. This program allows me to greatly increase my production as an estimator in both the quantity and quality of my estimates for my company. With the ability to upload drawings directly into program, I have gone paperless in my estimates, saving my company money in the long run by not having to order or print out drawings anymore. The Edge is a great tool for us and highly recommended. Pros Ease of Use. Good Technical support. Cons Fireproofing Shop Drawings as printed out directly from the Edge are a bit messy. I need to use a PDF editor to edit and clean them up. Pros I've been using the Edge Estimating Software, on and off, since 2012. I own another take-off software that is a great tool for measuring, but doesn't have the integrated condition builder and pricing features. Scanning through some of the other reviews here, let me assure you, that the negative reviews are from those who don't have the correct operating system to run Edge functions or the user just doesn't understand how to use the system. Construction take-off's are only as easy as your understanding of the part and pieces (conditions) required for an accurate take-off. The Edge Estimating System is the only software I would suggest for on-screen take-offs with the ability to hand-enter if you're so inclined. I prefer on-screen as there is 0 chance of losing a condition in transfer. Cons You can't load large pdf's at one time. Can't view more than one screen at a time (would be nice to be able to open a detail page and measure parts while building the condition). A little pricey. I wish you could have two jobs running simultaneously to compare trends, this makes it tough to compare without screenshotting one job then comparing. (total hassle and time consuming) in a recap screen it seems like you would want as much information as possible... the markup, or $/mday is in a sub field, but not on the main screen and it doesn't show up if you print a recap. in addition, if you print a recap, you can view SQS/mday... this doesn't show up on the recap screen until you print it... these are two very key items that I use to trend my pricing, and both of them are not readily available for viewing without additional keystrokes. Pros All in one take-off and estimating program that has the ability to integrate with your accounting software to have precise job costing. Cloud based so little to no digital footprint has to be stored on someones computer and you can access your project anywhere with an internet connection. Cons The reporting feature they allow you to use to manipulate their default reports is extremely time consuming and should be much more simple. Cons After giving feedback about new updates to the software, most of our suggestions weren't taken into consideration leaving us frustrated. This also opened up more problems trying to use the new update the way we were used to working, slowing down our productivity.
