Easy to review and adjust projects, the PDF viewer and page creationg can have some minor improvements. Pros The easy way to build an estimate. For roofing it is really easy to adjust conditions to meet your project needs. Cons In some cases it crash when working abroad. Learning about the change order option has been a game changer for tracking active project costs. Pros Adaptability/ customizability for my specific needs. Very powerful tool to be able to quickly make changes to existing bids and look at variety of options in existing bids. Customer Support has been awesome and typically very helpful. Cons If the back end/database portion could be more user friendly and less "coding" that would be helpful. More modules on basic tasks and advanced tasks would be helpful when needed a quick reminder on how to do a task. i.e. it was very difficult finding info or someone who knew how to correctly create a soffit condition. Estimator Construction Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Tough to learn but once its set up its a smooth system" April 10, 2017 3.0 I am in my late twenty's and nowhere near a computer genius but also not computer illiterate and my experience with this system was it is super confusing to set up and learn but once the program is set up to how you usually take off projects it works nicely. This is not an out of the box system at all. If you are making a complete change from paper take off's and excel sheets like my company was it will take weeks and months to get this to work how you want. We have taken two trips, 1 week each, to their headquarters to have our database's set up along with countless hours and minutes of phone calls to their tech department. The owner who bought the program said that we should be able to figure out most of the database setup in house. I can tell you after going to in house training twice there is absolutely no way I would have known how to set this up. After 1 1/2 years of using the system I still find it confusing at times when you aren't doing simple jobs. We mainly use EDGE for Acoustical Ceiling take off's. That also seemed like the easiest to get set up. 99% of the time this works perfectly but there are some jobs that just doesn't seem to calculate right, in particular long hall ways and curves. We most recently had our databases set up for Fireproofing, EIFS, and DEFS. I have to say once the fireproofing is set up it is a complete life saver. The way the old estimator here would do fireproofing take off's was very mistake filled because the hundreds of factors to take into account i.e UL Codes, thicknesses, member sizes, etc. DEFS also works quite nicely but that is a fairly simple take off, square footage with your materials and labor associated with that square footage. We are still working a few bugs out of our EIFS take off's. They aren't quite where we want them on the labor side so I am constantly checking them with our existing excel formulas we have used for years. The people that work for the EDGE, in particular the training and tech support, are always more than willing to help out and are always friendly. My biggest gripe with the system is the difficulty of getting set up initially and also when you come across something unique getting it to work in the program. Once the leg work is done to get the system set up like you like the program really does run smooth. In the long run it is a giant time saver. For example a 50k sqft ACT job that used to take a whole day to take off on paper literally takes minutes. I've tried a few other estimating software systems over the years and in my opinion The Edge is at the top of the pack. Pros My favorite part of The Edge is that it is user friendly. The condition builder is fantastic with it's various tabs at the top to guide you thru building your assemblies. That gives me more confidence in putting my estimate together vs. building an assembly in what looks like an Excel spreadsheet as many other estimating software system do. Cons That the AI take-off module is a separate software. Hopefully there will be some improvements with this technology in the upcoming years and eventually the AI take-off could be integrated into The Edge vs. having 2 software systems 'talk' to each other. It combines the takeoff, pricing and labor into one easy to use format. Pros It speeds up accuracy and speed of takeoffs. It has reduced my takeoff time by having saved templates and being able to combine conditions (like putting the coping cap in the wall flashing condition). I feel it's accuracy and customization features for our scopes puts us a step higher than our competition. I would highly recommend this product for your estimating needs. Pros Customer support, accuracy, reports, being able to customize your own databases, groups & conditions. Set up is pretty easy for our techs. The admin portal is also an excellent resource. They stay on top of bugs and issues. A great tool for bidding & estimates. Security seems pretty tight too. As far as value for the money, it tends to lean towards the pricier side of estimating programs. I do feel it does give us an edge, though. Cons I feel it can be a little too deep sometimes. A cut & paste for the conditions from the take off screen tree would be extremely convenient. It also does not always start on the most recent condition that you edited. It will often begin the takeoff from the last condition that you used rather than the last condition that you edited. The EDGE has provided me with as accurate an estimate that one could produce, and also provides the means to purchase and manage a project with materials and labor, as long as the user takes the time to dial in his database and insert the correct information. It's easy to do a take-off on a small project in a few hours and a larger one in a few days if you use project conditions, common conditions, and duplicates. Pros On the occasion when we take-off projects with multiple rooms or floors, using project and common conditions makes our take-off very efficient. I have 30 years' experience estimating and have used MC2, HCSS HeavyBid, Excel spreadsheets, and even pencil on paper. The Edge is one of the easier estimating software program to use. It took me about a week to learn 85% of the program. It is fairly intuitive. There's enough flexibility that you can adapt it to almost any situation. Cons Assigning User Codes, Cost Codes, and SOV Codes can be tedious. It is built for metal stud and drywall take-off. It would be nice to have conditions built for wood stud framing. Pros I've used it for 14 years now, and there simply isn't a better software out there. I like the way I can manipulate all areas of the program to suit our personal needs. Cons The change to version 12 from version 10 introduced auto panning by running the cursor to the edge of the screen. This is great, but in Version 10, the arrow keys moved the screen around very quickly and was more user friendly. In version 12, the arrow keys work, but they barely move the screen, so it's no longer useful. The ease of use ing the Edge estimating software program is very easy to use - a 10 as a perfect score; however, you do need to go to Florida for a week of training, which I highly recommend so you can learn all the features and how to use them correctly. The features and functionality of their estimating software program allow you to bid much quicker and efficiently - a score of 10. What used to take me 10 hours to perform a complete take-off, with labor and material totals, now only takes 30 to 45 minutes. This allows me more time to bid more projects and help make the company more money in the process. The value of the estimating system pays off for itself with the first job you sell! Plus, knowing the Edge system has all the templates for almost any type of commercial roofing system and manufacturer helps to make sure there are no mistakes and nothing is left out on your bid. The days of having to look at 36" x 42" blue lines is over. You simply download a pdf on your screen, set the scale correctly, and you are ready to perform your entire take-off. I use the Edge reports to give our foreman and superintendent the labor and material take-off's which shows them if they are going over the budget and helps them to get back on track if necessary. I sometimes make colored prints of the roof plan showing the complete take-off with the associated legend to help the client better understand what is involved in their re-roof project or new roof project. I can continue to go and on about the benefits of using the Edge system, but just know that the value of the Edge will give you peace of mind and help save the company thousands of dollars in preventing material shortages, due to estimator errors(the old fashion way) as well as how much labor dollars you will spend in manhours and crewdays you will need for each job....I cannot put a dollar amount for this value because it is priceless and worth every penny spent on the Edge Estimating software program. The customer support has been very beneficial over the years and continues to be so. If I ever have a problem or need to ask a question, I simply call the Edge and talk to a technical representative and in less than 5 minutes, I'm a happy customer all over again. The overall quality rating of the Edge system is a 10! Pros How nothing is missed on a typical take-off. All the labor and materials are completely figured for you while performing each command. Pros The EDGE helps in organizing and displaying a lot of useful data for accurate estimation of bids, and helps in automating all functions of pricing and submission of bid documents. I also like how The EDGE can be used as a project management tool, which allows accurate tracking of tasks and enables the work team to collaborate in preparing work programs and technical and financial reports. There are a few items i wish could be implemented in an upcoming update: - Drawing Maneuverability - I have used AutoCAD extensively and the zooming/panning operation with the mouse is much better/easier than what the EDGE currently offers. The zoom function is achieved by rolling the wheel of the mouse and the panning is achieved by holding down the wheel while moving the mouse. Currently the EDGE zooming is much slower and hard to control either with the keyboard (ctrl++/-) or the zoom window in the top right corner. Panning is not very user friendly whether the window in the corner or the keyboard arrows are used. - Customizing Reports - the reports function of the EDGE is a very useful tool. However, sometimes i need it to spit other information out and this is not a very easy task to modify. - Excel - exporting to excel is a nice function but i have been told that importing from excel is impossible. when entering prices in the Prices screen it isn't possible to pull down a value that is the same for multiple items. February 5, 2020 5.0 Our company uses it's own proprietary estimating software. I use the EDGE to do quick calculations of extra stuff I need to import manually into those estimates. I realized the EDGE is somewhat flexible to do certain changes. Pros The version I use is not a user friendly, interactive . It is very technical, which I like. Not everyone learns it well, which gives me an advantage as I have learned it more than everyone else I have met that uses it. I know of companies that have purchased it and do not use it due to not having anyone proficient enough to work with it. That is my advantage to get on a good job. Cons This version can be used on up to windows 7 only, which makes it a bit obsolete. To use more advanced windows you need to upgrade to a different version and there are costs involved, plus it becomes web based and internet dependent. I don't like that at all. The newest versions will close all the feature gaps that customer's have wanted for years. Pros The Edge will take off and price the estimate simultaneously with some minor tweaking on the front end. Estimating Manager Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Austin Rackley Roofing Review" July 11, 2019 4.0 We have been able to bid many more projects with the edge, with less estimators. To go along with that, estimates have become much more accurate and fool-proof. Pros I like mostly the time that it saves while estimating compared to by hand takeoffs and also the accuracy it allows if things are set up properly. I like the ability to fully customize everything from estimating templates to the reports and so much more. Cons There are several features that have been taken out in version 12 that we really liked as a company. Also there are several smaller bugs in the newer version that hopefully shouldn’t be too difficult to work out. Senior Estimator Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Long Time User" April 4, 2017 5.0 I think the product is great. would love to see the changes forthcoming with Version 12. I think there are a few of items that would only make the program only that much better. Pros The fact it walks you through each assembly and gives you the areas you need to focus on. unlike with Qbid you have to know each part and peace before building the assembly. Cons Some of the Onscreen features of Qbid would make the edge that much better. like the ability to just select a portion of a wall assembly in stead of the entire wall. or having to break it up into small parts. Senior Estimator/PM Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Great product overall" April 5, 2017 5.0 I have been using the edge software for 12 years now and so far it has been the best and well rounded system so far. The cost seems to be getting a little high compared to other programs with similar functions. I would like to see the system receive a few upgrades to justify the cost. Hopefully this will include a production control module for the project management side. Pros The accuracy of the system, the simplicity and universal use of the conditions. Cons Doesn't have enough features to assist with the project management side. Needs more control options for uploaded drawings. would really like to see a production control feature for managing projects.
