Pros: Definitely have the possibility to make and / or modify the geometries required for analysis related to the area of mechanics of materials. It is a friendly tool, to which we can adjust. Adaptability. If you are working with another 3D computer design program, Ansys DesignModeler, allows you to import the associated files and can even modify and assign new material properties. As a mechanical engineer passionate about design, you have the certainty that you have a tool with which to minimize the time of iterative design of the pieces or set.

Cons: The complexity of some geometries, in some opportunities, if you do not have a high capacity computer, can make the program slow. You can even close and lose some of the work you have done. Obviously, it is annoying to have to do the work again.
Additionally, their costs are high, even when you know that you have a powerful tool and recognition worldwide.
For research activities in the universities usually have them, however they expire after a short period. This makes deepening difficult for engineering students. This scenario is unfortunate for those universities that can not support this type of expenses.

Overall: As a mechanical engineer I have been involved in design activities for various components. 3D design is the key to effective and functional assemblies or pieces, because your efforts are focused on ensuring a good design methodology. Once you manage to create the geometries you can apply to it load states and run analysis available in Ansys Workbecn such as fatigue, strains and deformations, safety factors for infinite life, among others. The design of a friction machine, which was my degree work, gave me the opportunity to enjoy an effective tool in the design, this when verifying with the analytical results on different pieces. Resizing, mesh, refinements and types of elements for meshes, allow you to make this process viable and in less time. Each year the tool puts at your disposal new functions that make your life simpler as a mechanical designer. Ansys DesignModeler is excellent!

Pros: The ability to link up various different analysis in this software is really good. The GUI interface for this software is user friendly and the inbuilt drawing module is really powerful. It gives the user a variety of real life processes to handle within the software. One can also integrate classic APDL scripts within the software to suit their needs. The control over mesh generation and the ability to generate results as per needs is superb also.

Cons: There should be more help for the various modules listed in the software. One can easily get stuck if he doesnt know the proper options to work with.

Overall: I learnt a lot of applications of Finite Element Modelling from this software. The software also helped me analyzing complex geometries which can be a problem sometimes.

Pros: For 2D works, it's great. For 3D it can be effective as well - assuming you understand the Ansys layout and your main CAD program is also Ansys. If you plan on rounding out your use with FEA - then this is the path you want to take.

Cons: It feels very archaic. The tool buttons look old and are low quality. FEA tools can be frustrating if it bugs out and stops 2 hours into the calculations. There's some massaging you have to do if you want the flow to be smooth.

Pros: I like it's different tools provide for different set of Designs which are very helpful and time saving.

Cons: It's user interface is not so much good. Pretty difficult for new user. Various other competitors design software like solidworks has very simple and easy to use interface.

Overall: I design various products on this and I am very satisfied and really recommend.

Pros: Software is used best for Finite Element Modeling. Used it in a various number of projects to perform FEA on structures for static and dynamic loading applications.

Cons: CAD modeling on Ansys is not ideal. It is easier to use a different CAD modeling software and export into Ansys for any simulations or analysis as required.

Overall: Best for university course applications

Pros: Ansys Design Modeler is helpful because when I import the drawing file into Ansys Fluent software, I don't need to scale the dimensions whereas when I use AutoCAD to draw, I need to use scaling factor. Plus, even if I have drawn it in AutoCAD, I still need to do some modification in design modeler before I load that file into Fluent.

Cons: Not very easy to start with and may need other's help in the beginning. Need to learn some features very well before anyone can do the drawing at ease. Difficult to do the dimensions, and modify a drawing.

Overall: It's useful for doing any simulation using Ansys Workbench.

I have used it for about a year for stress analysis and finite element analysis.

Pros: Ability to study surface forces, ability to mesh easily, ability to improve the quality of meshes and look at dynamic stresses

Cons: The model shows up error messages on meshing only after a 3 - 4 hour run. Not in the initial stages of the run

Pros: This module form part of a extensive tools library that can be accessed within the workbench interface. This faciltates the modification of any component without the need to leave the program.
The software has a familiar interface to other design programs, which facilitates its use and understanding.

Cons: Although the program is constantly updated, its graphical interface remains old.
The number of compatible formats and tools available in this software does not compare with those offered by other design programs on the market.

Overall: This software allows me to develop all the work within a single interface, without the need to leave it and use another program for some procedure. In addition, because it is linked to other modules, it allows the modification of data and update of results without problems.
