We also have instructors and other members of our college that use ArcGIS as a research tool. Pros Esri's customer support has been very helpful during the years we have used ArcGIS for education. The features that are offered with ArcGIS are vast. Even though many of them are an additional fee, they are very powerful. Cons The licensing can be a bit of a chore. When purchasing add-ons for ArcGIS, some of the add-ons are built into the application installer and some are not. This is more of a gripe than anything and is something that I'd rather be able to bundle into one installer than having to determine which are or are not in the installer. Review Source Melissa H. Arc will be the mainstay in GIS for years to come, it's functionality is unparalleled. Maps are far more visually appealing than in opensource alternatives, for a professional business, it is still the best choice. Cons Pricing is the only thing that gives open source alternatives a change against Arc. If prices were to significantly decrease, Arc would be the go to no matter what. It is versatile across many different fields and presents data in a nice way that is easy to interpret. Pros I loved this software. There were so many different features and different modes to try. I like how you can get data from offline and put it into this software. I also like how there is a book that you can get that compliments this software to show you how to use it. I like how there are continual upgrades for more percise and better functions. Cons I don't like how much there was. There are a lot of different functions you can use and you can use them in many ways it almost gets overwhelming. I also feel like when I used it I only used the simplest most available tools because I knew how to use them. Sometimes when saving my maps they wouldn't save in the right place I wanted them to and I couldn't transfer them to another computer with the same software. January 11, 2018 5.0 I am able to pull the data we needed for zoning students. Pros I am able to pull any data I need as long as I have it in there. Good Data in, Good Data Out. As long as I added the correct data to the system I can manipulate it and format it any way i desire. Cons You need a pretty beefy system to run the software. This has been my only complaint. The Rendering time for the amount of roads I deal with is pretty extensive when I am on a system that is low on resources. This allows provides a clear map whether to use in the field to review existing conditions or in the office to create conceptual plans for proposed work. The software also allows our organization to create quick maps for project scoping, grant applications, and public meetings to aid in illustrating existing conditions and proposed improvements. Cons Some features are not always intuitive and full use of the software requires class study, reading, and years of experience. Online access now makes for an easy solution for most users, while ArcGIS Pro has come along and has a much more visual UI/UX than its predecessor ArcGIS Desktop. Cons It is very expensive and that is a big limitation because you have to pay for every tool independientely, the basic license allows you to do some processes but some elements are not allowed. Pros There is so much functionality built into different geoprocessing tools that you can customize your spatial analysis to complete basically any task and solve any spatial challenge. I like that you there is the opportunity to use scripts and tools that other users have built in the software and overcome challenges that may not be solved using the standard geoprocessing tools. Cons Due to the enormous amount of analysis capabilities, there is a steep learning curve that one must overcome to use the software to its fullest capability. If you're looking for something to do basic spatial analysis, this is likely not the tool you should use as it's expensive and has more functionality than the average person needs.
