Cons The cost of this software is prohibitive for many organisations. There are free open source alternatives (e.g. QGIS) which offer many of the same features which may be more attractive to small organisations. July 30, 2022 5.0 Pros ArcGIS is pretty much the bedrock of mapping for cultural resource management. We use this product all the time to create maps of features, archaeological sites, track shovel tests while in the field, and even just navigation. This product is essential to what we do and I wish I knew more how to use it. Cons One thing that is difficult about this product is just figuring out how to use it. As far as formatting or inputting data, it’s not always that straightforward. I wish that it was more streamlined with more helpful tutorials to get beginning users started with ArcGIS. The file geodatabase (fgdb) format is performant and compact. Cons Some extension like the Network Analysis can be expensive. The new user licensing used with ArcGIS Pro can make the cost explose. However, the interface never freezes up and provides the means to work with large data-sets. I do research in transportation and the options of VRP or Facility Location have made things easier for me. Another feature to highlight is that you can use python to customize some features Pros Spatial data management is very broad, you can manipulate, analyze, calculate or create information. It has numerous tools that you can use either in the database or directly in the shapefile. Esri has an active community so it is easy to find solutions, especially in the first steps with the program. It also offers courses and depending on your license they can be quite cheap or even free. You can create and export professional, clean and attractive maps, perfect for publications. In terms of spatial info processing, you can do anything you need. With ArcGIS, you only need to search a little. Cons ArcGIS is a very broad and complete program, although it seems like an advantage, sometimes it becomes difficult to handle all its powerful functionalities. Even when you have basic knowledge of GIS, you should always be consulting forums, tutorials, and documentation, which takes time. But in the end, it's worth it. The biggest drawback is the price. There are a couple of programs with features very similar to ArcGIS that are open source. In fact, I have colleagues who have migrated to these programs because they don't have the money to buy the ArcGIS license. However, if your institution has the purchasing power, it will be a great choice. The simply useful tool who are under these related professionals. Pros I'm familiarised with this software since my university final year optional module. A highly powerful tool for handle geotechnical data and we can simply analysis with ArcGIS and can get highly useful outputs. It helps us to create multiple layer maps using ur surveying data and our geographical coordinates and the most useful feature is we can save our output file as our convenient format such as .shp.SVG & etc.It's a really helpful tool who are specially working with spatial data and still there are plenty of features available under this software actually most of them are not aware by my self. Cons The pricing for this software is really high and I'm pretty sure about most of us not ready to spend these much of amount for ArcGIS whether there are open source alternatives available in the market. It’s a big opportunity for me to use this vendor during my university life. As a water resource engineer, it has proved extremely helpful in my organisation in the planning of projects. It handles massive amounts of data and it can bring to life the most complex designs and layouts. Cons From my experience, Arcgis does not intergrate very well with other softwares like EPANET or Autocad and transferring or moving layouts, designs or maps to and from can prove problematic and difficult especially for a person without much experience for instance when you want to manipulate a water network layout further on hydraulic software like EPANET. Arcgis software is also quite expensive . Pros I have been using ArcGIS for many years, as it is the most fundamental cartography and map analysis software in existence. You can add layers from thousands of sources, and calculate and analyze almost anything one could imagine, in terms of the geospatial realm. Cons The software is not intuitive at all, and many classes and trainings are needed to even begin to use it properly. It is very difficult to integrate with outside files, such as CSVs, and they often need a lot of meticulous cleaning up to get the software to read the data. Review Source Monel K.
