I had never done any systems modeling before using AnyLogic, and I feel it was a great introduction. I am excited to continue building my capabilities with it. Cons While the expanse of tutorials and practice case studies are great, I think an in-program tutorial that highlights all the features would be helpful as well. Pros I like the flexibility and ease of creating models. Cons The documentation and learning materials are lacking, since each model has it's own needs. Also, the "learn in 3 days" is separate from the actual documentation, making it confusing how there are 2 official sources. For the Javascript, it's very unclear how much code needs to be written in the 'advanced java' like the import statement, as it differs from modules/interfaces/variables/functions. There are many other features I appreciate about AnyLogic, such as the drag-and-drop feature, which allows me to easily model complex systems without having to hardcode the model. Cons I think the IDE interface for writing Java code could be improved, especially the function suggestions. Will try programing more later this year. Pros Easy to learn & use. Got the job done. minimum of fuss. Cons 1\. Bending radius restrictive when using Anylogic when drawing cyclic causal loop & stock flow diagrams. Had to include dummy variables to zig zag arcs. 2. Could not increase the size of + & - signs on arrows 3. The only adjustment I could make in the placement of arrows was adjusting the loop radius. Otherwise, some +'s & -'s were overdrawn on each other or by other arrows. Every day something new is learned to be applied in the simulations. Pros Its versatility makes it unbeatable since it is difficult not to find an application and way of modeling for each problem. Additionally, it is a tool that, from the point of view of impacting senior company managers, is one of the best options. Cons The only thing I could say is that it possibly requires a significant enough hardware infrastructure to execute the processes, since as we make the model more complex, more processing is required. In my case, with 16 GB of RAM and a solid state drive, I'm beginning to notice that the modeling becomes slow at times. I was becoming jaded in academia until I was sent on a training to learn to use it and it's just so versatile that it makes me have faith in academia again because we don't all have to use one hammer and make everything a nail. It allows me to be creative and artistic in ways other packages don't, but it could use more ways for sure (such as in aligning text or objects more easily or better graphics). Pros It's the most versatile of the software packages for systems modeling by a landslide. From the methods that can be implemented to the ability to connect or interface with other programs and tools, it is the complete package. Most others only focus on one tool or maybe two (such as most system dynamics software). Cons Learning to code is very hard for it and they need better examples and more support. They also could really work on the graphics or at least ability for users to connect to make their own graphics. The price is so high that it's very hard for me as a junior academic to get someone to fund even the university edition and has always been an issue. I would absolutely love to be getting to use this tool more but the costs and time it takes for me to code as someone that's not trained in the field are costly.
