April 26, 2018 5.0 Pros What I like most in AnyLogic is the fact, that everything in the simulation model is easily configurable using Java code. The wide range of simulation experiments and also the database (and connectivity in general) enable a very flexible and efficient use of the software. Cons It would be great if there was an online community to ask questions and allow discussions. Simply googleing things (like you can do for VBA, Java and such) is not really possible. However, the support team of AnyLogic is really quick and provides very helpful answers. Frankly, the experience has not gone smoothly. Pros It combines multiple libraries for modelling systems using low level, mid-level and high level simulation modelling techniques. It support the production of hybrid models. Suitable for modelling both manufacturing and service operations. Cons The Java codes. They make building models using Anylogic herculean and onerous. Incorporating java codes when building the smallest of models is frustrating. Training tutorials that explain how to use the software are near unavailable. The Help facility does not explain terms (functions, parameters, collections etc) clearly. Simply put, Anylogic is not for the basic user, neither is it user-friendly or suitable for non-programmers or users with minimal coding skills. It is difficult to learn or use. It is complex, arduous and laborious. Sometimes, some of the logic in some examples do not make sense. Review Source CS Conor S. I love using this software for this purpose. The support for modeling "pedestrian" like congestion/etc on our docks and yards is amazing. I know of no other simulation modeling environment that does this. Pros AnyLogic is an incredibly flexible platform for creating very sophisticated simulation models. I love it's integration with the Java programming language. Also, I like how they separate the visualization from the logic of the modeling. Cons To do all that AnyLogic does, it is an extremely complicated modeling tool. It takes a while to learn. I would recommend trying to master one type of simulation at a time, whatever your personal needs are. The hardest part is honestly the very beginning. But once you're feeling confident in your knowledge of anylogic, connecting the different types of simulations is a seamless process. Pros Once the initial learning curve is surpassed, the resulting simulations are great quality products. You are able to inter connect different types of simulation into one big symbiotic project. In my personal experience, said connection has been between discrete, dynamic and agent based simulation. I am very satisfied with the results I've been able to reach. One can intuitively approach modeling and if one really wants to handle things manually, it is available through inputting Java codes into various places. Cons AnyLogic seems to be limited in terms of computing capacity (number of agents, for example) compared to similar products; that said, there is not a single product that does all the things that AnyLogic does in a single suite. Models built using AnyLogic tend to be quite difficult to retrace the step (lots of clicking involved) and the Java input system is kind of finicky (not as streamlined). The idea is to check whether the operations policy based on this algorithm results in better fleet availability. Pros I particularly like the possibility of combining different types of simulation like agent-based and discrete-event. Another key advantage in my opinion is the possibility of communication between Anylogic and an external optimizing script written in Python. Overall, I think this simulation software offers a lot of flexibility and a huge number of possibilities for the modellers to implement their ideas and it counts with a great community that provide great resources open and available on the internet. Cons I think it would be helpful if there were more detailed and basic tutorials to facilitate the beginners users adaptation. However sometimes bugs can be hard to find, and a knowledge of Java is helpful. The variety of simulation types and domains is great. Also a good way to introduce students to the concept of state machines. Pros Using the supplied tutorials, getting started is very fast. The graphics are great, and the features do permit fine grained simulation Once knowledgeable, possible to get a simulation up and running in just a few hours. Cons Product can be a bit buggy. Java faults can be somewhat difficult to trace. Some of the features are still not working (i asked for the priority queue to be fixed, i think it is still not working). Reason for choosing AnyLogic Very fast to get up and running. A variety of types of simulations can be assigned. Good for a survey course. Pros It is a really intuitive software, furthermore, you can easily find online-help in its website if you have any trouble by understanding the use of any of their functionalities.Its use is really wide, and you can even have graphical representations, in charts or even 3D modeling. Cons The fact that is programmed in Java sometimes makes it harder for me to understand how to code some lines, as I'm more used to use Python, but I understand that this is a personal opinion. I used the software to model a biological system that functions similarly to a manufacturing plant and was amazed at the ease by which I was able to get the functionality I desired. Though the commands got slower as my file increased in size, it was a very smooth experience to work with. Pros Easy to represent many different scenarios.
