### "Warning: Athenahealth may put you out of business"

June 9, 2025

1.0

Horrendous, almost put me out of business after 26 years. I am very serious. 3 months after changing over to Athena, our income was slipping. By 4-5 months we were having trouble meeting payroll. Six months in it was clear we may be going out of business after 26 years. I took no salary for 7 months, worked 24/7 and finally was given the advice that the only way to save the company was to go back on Curemd which we did. Six months later we are back on our feet. Over $600,000 in collections remains missing. Athena barely worked claims. Their customer service barely speaks our language and is of no help. The "Customer Success" manager seemed to be hell bent in putting us out of business. When I finally got our case escalated to the VP of Sales, he only made it worse and was actually agressie toward us.

Pros

nice looking software but the training is all videos that are cryptic and not helpful. Customer service just gives the run around, hardly any answers.

Cons

I want to be honest with all potential clients. This review is not one star. It is zero. I changed from Curemd to Athena because they made claims that they could increase my income as a solo medical practitioner. 3 months after changing over to Athena, our income was slipping. You can always reach someone who knows what they're doing. Do not get involve with this company. They were sued for millions by a hospital for fraud. They were bought by Bain Capital 10 years ago and they probably gutted whatever value there was.

### "Happy office means happy patients"

February 27, 2026

5.0

Overall, my experience with AthenaOne has been positive. I feel it saves valuable time and that benefits both office staff and the patient. The ease of automated billing has really increased our revenue and the speed in which we are reimbursed in our office.

Pros

Athena incorporates everything into one place which is vital for a busy practice. I found this to be a huge time saver as opposed to having to log into several different systems.

Cons

There have been times I had trouble getting thru to customer service/support, however, when I did, they were extremely helpful.

### "Good but expensive EMR/Practice management software"

December 1, 2025

4.0

Overall, AthenaOne has been a solid EMR for daily clinical use. It improves organization, streamlines communication, and supports consistent documentation, even though the learning curve and occasional workflow inefficiencies require some adjustment.

Pros

AthenaOne offers strong clinical workflows and helpful automation for routine tasks. The integrated scheduling, charting, and billing features work together smoothly, which reduces administrative burden and keeps patient visits moving efficiently.

Cons

Some parts of the interface can feel cluttered, and certain tasks take more clicks than expected. Reporting tools are powerful but not always intuitive, so it can take time to learn how to generate the data you need. Also, it's expensive!

Alternatives considered

[eClinicalWorks](https://www.capterra.com/p/120360/eClinicalWorks/)

Reason for choosing athenaOne

it was the cadillac of EMRs for private practitioners, it wasn't as expensive when volumes were lower, but now that we've grown it is very expensive.

### "We get it, you’re too important to answer the phone or speak with us directly. "

June 22, 2025

2.0

It is a lesson in patience! Don’t plan to log in and do much of anything unless you have a good 20-30 minutes at least!

Pros

I do like that there is a portal to access my information, access lab/test results, see upcoming appointments and the ability to message my provider.

Cons

There are quite a few things! Since there is only so much space I will summarize! In a nutshell, the portal is incredibly slow and very glitchy requiring me to reload the page often and take longer than expected to utilize basic components. (Same case for different providers, different Wi-Fi access, device or computer, it doesn’t matter it’s always that way) It reminds me of a portal that a huge medical center would use, which for hospitals etc is understandable, but for my primary care or psychiatrist using this portal makes it feel incredibly impersonal like I’m just another number in the system. Even though they may be affiliated with a major hospital, an app or portal should at least appear more unique or individualized on the patient end. These are my regular ongoing providers that I expect to know incredibly detailed private personal information about me, and instead it is blatantly obvious I’m just one more patient number in a full database of others. It also has a lot of standard “pop up” responses like the “please allow 48 hours for a response” type thing, which I would guess is set up specifically by the practice, but again, it just furthers the cold impersonal nature. It’s like those pop up responses are supposed to be “helpful” to confirm a message was sent/received… but in reality comes across more as if it should say “We have 847 other patient messages in this mailbox that some hourly staff person may or may not check. We have more important matters to attend to and you may or may not receive a response in a few days”. Basically it feels belittling and minimizing and just furthers the narrative that doctors can’t be bothered to communicate directly to patients.

### "Awful. Avoid this company."

October 22, 2025

1.0

Awful. They do not follow up on claims and put claims on hold. The worst thing is that they do not forward correspondence to you from CBE from Medicare trying to recover overcharges. As a result, I did not know what was going on and suddenly got hit with a $6,000 bill from the Treasury Department. This happened twice to me. The CBE people told me that it happens often with Athenahealth. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! YOU WILL LOSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS !!!

Pros

The practice management software is fairly good. It is not as fancy or slick as a lot of other programs but this probably allows it to function more quickly over slower internet connections.

Cons

Horrible billing. Holding claims. Never following up on claims and then just stating that it's not their responsibility. They do not forward communications that the Medicare auditors and recovery agencies send to the Athena billing address in Maine. This is a recurring problem.

### "Great EHR system!"

May 14, 2025

5.0

Pros

I love that athena is easy to navigate and I really like that their setup is not too busy. I feel that other EHR systems tend to have a lot of words and buttons and colors all over your screen but athenaOne is aesthetic and functional. I love that with the recent update you can now see the phone number and insurance on your screen during intake. I also like that you can access electronic fax's, patient messages, clinical and admin documents all in one place. I love that athenaOne has the option to do athenaCapture; it makes it seamless to upload patient pictures and insurance cards. I almost never experience issues with athenaOne and I am really greatful that they have such easy support resources. It is always helpful to see their posted articles about related issues, and that you can easily chat with someone or create a cases if you are having an issue in the system. I also love the extent of prep work that I can enter for patients, such as intake prep and preparing order sets and encounter plans.

Cons

I had some critiques with athenaOne that have now been updated in the recent update! Some cons I have experienced are that sometimes it is slow to load. With this, when I go back to the home page sometimes it will switch my homepage from clinician to non-clinician and I have to switch it back.

### "Powerful platform with some minor drawbacks"

February 26, 2026

4.0

My overall experience with athenaOne has been positive, especially in terms of having everything integrated into one system. Managing scheduling, electronic health records, billing, and patient communication is nice. Patients are not as fond of it.

Pros

Combines scheduling, medical records, billing, and patient communication in one system, which can streamline workflows.

Cons

Messaging notifications can get dropped and document capture can be hit or miss when it's lagging. Also the learning curve is steep, and it's pricey.

### "athenaOne Simplified Documentation"

February 2, 2026

5.0

Overall, my experience with athenaOne has been positive. It supports efficient clinical workflows and centralizes key functions, though there is room for improvement in usability and customization.

Pros

I like how athenaOne centralizes patient information and simplifies documentation, scheduling, and billing in one platform.

Cons

Some workflows feel overly complex and require too many clicks to complete simple tasks. The system can be slow at times.

### "Wishing they were better"

April 1, 2025

2.0

The only thing that has kept us with Athena is the hassle it will be to change to another EMR. I thought that maybe it was the team that we were working with, but I have contacted two other companies and they have similar issues. I like the overall charting experience. They just tell you they do so much more and to very honest, they just don't.

Pros

If you are looking for medical software EMR it will get the job done. The basic charting is pretty good.

Cons

They will promise you the moon. Once you are locked in, they are sorely lacking in fulfilling that promise. I have had this EMR for two years. They told me 3 months to get me up and running. After an extra 4 month and an extra $60,000, we were able to start billing our patients. Their on boarding team did not know what they were doing. They said they seamlessly work with Epic, NOT. They are great with billing assistance, NOT. Trying to get set up with Dragon, all they want to do is sell us their system. After 2 months of arguing, they finally set up a meeting to get Dragon going, I am not holding my breath. If this simple task is screwed up as much as most of the others, we will be leaving.

### "Don't Use Athena One"

July 8, 2025

1.0

Terrible. Waste of time. Unable to solve problems in a timely manner. EMR for PCPs-not specialists. Changed our coding without notification or permission and made it worse. Their reply-We'll take responsibility---what does that mean? You will pay the fees?

Pros

This EMR is good for PCPs. That's it!

Cons

They take forever to fix issues-if they can. We signed up for their billing service-Total waste of time and their "billing experts" don't have experience with non PCP billing. We've asked for a rep change-which they don't do. Their reps are "lip-service". Major waste of time and money. Seek an EMR that really specializes in what you do---and same for any billing service. Their patient follow up software is mediocre as well as their "bells and whistles". You can run hundreds of reports-but when the software doesn't help in your dx or tx selection, or getting paid-----the reports are worthless. Am in the process of leaving them. I suggest you don't use, or leave.

### "Excellent Medical Software"

February 10, 2025

5.0

My success is because of Athena One. There have been multiple times that I grow in directions that Athena One found for me. For example, the CCM program is a big success for us; this came from the Athena platform. We also have a robust ALL TEXT to our patients when we have specific messages to all our patients, this is a wonderful feature that contributes to our success as a company serving our community. Now we will be rolling out Vitamins to help our patients maintain health via this natural holistic approach. Again, Athena introduced this idea to me. I appreciate the interconnectivity and authentic desire to help. It has been a good partnership for Garza Medical Group.

Pros

I cannot do what I do without Athena. My company was founded about 5 years ago; with a startup patient population at that time of ZERO. Now, we have over 8600 patients. As a solo practitioner and a team of 20 staff, we are taking care of our community BECAUSE of the support Athena One provides us.

Cons

I do not have any issues with Athena. I do have an extensive practice with many billing items; we do EKG, ABI, diabetic retinal exams, and a robust continuity of care; there are times when my billing department get bogged down with insufficient answers from Athena support team; but I think it is because our small company has a style that requires more than the average approach. My practice manager can better speak to these details.

### "Excellent Medical Records Platform "

Pros

AthenaOne is a highly convenient medical records platform that facilitates tracking patient information, scheduling appointments, diagnostic and procedural coding, as well as insurance billing and claims. It has an easy to use interface with customer support and advanced security.

Cons

### "AthenaOne Provider Review"

October 30, 2025

5.0

My overall experience with AthenaOne has been fantastic. The ease of use for the providers and customers makes this a medical charting system that is wonderful for small business owners and customers alike.

Pros

Appointment scheduling and user interface is of the highest quality with this product. I appreciate the efficiency of improvements and how quick & easy it is for customers to utilize the online version of the appointment scheduling and the customer support that is offered is fantastic.

Cons

At times, the bugs and issues with website improvements can be rather cumbersome. At times, it did take quite a bit of time for the bugs and issues to be rectified.

### "User friendly EMR "

July 19, 2025

Pros

EMR really easy to handle for multiple patients. Good for middle to small size practices. I am able to handle multiple records at the same time.

Cons

It works fine for me. No concerns so far. It does require a computer with good specs to run smooth. It would freeze in older pcs.

Overall, Athena is easy to navingate and to find things. wish there wasnt so many clicks w tasking.

Pros

Easy to navigate. I like the shortcuts. I like that u can choose whether to view pt list under status or time of appt. Status is nice because once they are gone u dont have to see them on your list anymore.

Cons

Would like to be able to check out without having to go into the chart. I dont really love the tasking system. Too many clicks. I wish you could see the pts picture under status like u can under time of appt.

My experience has not been to positive. The cross permissions are a headache especially when we have non-clinical staff get clinical functions when not needed.

### "Simple but could get expensive"

August 9, 2025

4.0

AthenaOne is powerful and can seriously streamline your practice if you want one system for everything. It’s especially good for keeping billing on track and staying connected with patients. But… it’s not cheap, setup can be a pain, and the interface still makes you do more clicking than you’d like. Small practices especially need to weigh the cost against the convenience.

Pros

Enjoyed the simplicity of integration and implementation. EHR, billing, scheduling, patient portal… all connected so you’re not juggling multiple logins.

Cons

The pricing can get complicated. The more money your practice makes, the more they take. Not great if you’re a small shop.

Pros

My overall experience is positive as it allows me to have multiple screens open from within the program to properly do my job and keep the patient flow moving and not slowing down.

Pros

What I enjoy most about Athena is the ability to have my billing, schedule, and chart open so I can multitask and complete my day to day work.

### "worse than advertised."

September 29, 2024

2.0

poor help, most often no answers. written info is not helpful most often.

Pros

little after initial signup.\\Did like the problem list being available.

Cons

notes get lost when I have to go away to other chart notes. the dictation program works poorly ,and the part to correct errors does not work. Initial startup failed and I lost a lot of money initially. Athena refused to help get my money back to me which was already sent by the insurance company. Reimbursement money gets shifted thru a separate bank, and this added to loss of repsonsibility of "where is my money?" Difficult to get from one section to another, and the instructions to do so are hard to find. The help sections are not clear, and it usually takes several windows to get though to the detailed information I needed.
