### "Athenahealth EMR Review"

April 20, 2017

4.0

Overall there are many good qualities with Athenahealth. I would recommend it to my collegues.

Pros

Appointment scheduling is pretty user-friendly. It would be helpful to have a more defined weekly page with better shading or coloring for a quick weekly glance. I like the appointment waiting list. I also like the drop-down menus.

Cons

I am not fond of the Templets. There needs to be a way to allow notes on the templates for follow up. It is difficult to see what templets are being used and which ones need to be rolled back. Also, the I do not think learning portal is not very helpful, and there needs to be a better training program especially for templets. It would be helpful to have a reminder that pops up for alerts for billing or appointments or admin. The reminder calls sometimes cut off. There need to be better follow-ups on complicated claims.

### "I cannot imagine the practice of medicine without Athena EHR"

February 15, 2017

5.0

It does everything from soup to nuts. Keeps up with all meaningful use and PQRS effortlessly. Handles billing, intuitive documentation, patient reminders and communication. Seamless handles incoming clinical information such as labs, x rays, scans, consults that would otherwise overflow the fax or mail are now seamlessly integrated with the patient chart.

Pros

Always connected with the details of my patient care. Handles everything everywhere including built in electronic prescribing. Handy app for smartphones. Streamlined and intuitive use. Works great with Dragon medical voice recognition software.

Cons

Always connected!

### "athenahealth review"

September 12, 2018

3.0

I still thought this was an excellent product but I wouldn't recommend to anyone with a small group of users.

Pros

The mobile piece was an excellent solution at the time but as standards changed, we no longer needed a system like this. There are a lot of bells and whistles but they come at a price.

Cons

It was pretty expensive for the population we were using this for. Maybe 200 people were using it and it was a huge cost. Used this software for a year or so but no longer needed the mobile portion so the software became too expensive.

### "Very Disappointed with this EHR and their billing."

August 12, 2018

2.0

Our billing is also done through this system. Waste a of money. This is a huge disappointment. I spend too much time researching modifiers and trying to make sense of computer generated billing instructions telling me to see this rule or that rule. These are issues that a billing company is supposed to take care of. Need to talk to someone on the phone to resolve an issue? Good luck. Would be much better off to just hire a billing/coding person to work in the office.

Pros

Well, it is an electronic record so i have to consider that a pro. I really cannot think of any other pros.

Cons

Total Lack of Support. You cannot just call to speak to someone. You must first go through multiple questions and drop down boxes to direct and then you can receive an access code which is required to actually speak to someone. More often than not, the person isn't aware of how to help with your situation and has to go speak to someone else while you remain on hold.

### "A user friendly system"

June 20, 2016

4.0

Pros

The scrubbing claims feature helps and assures the submitting of clean claims the first time.

Cons

Athena does have some quirks when claims are being submitted. Even though a patient's elibibility checks out with the payer, Athena will send it back that there is a question with the eligibility when the payer has verified the eligibility. Also, Athena has far too many insurance packages to choose from. Such as instead of sending a BSBS claim to the home plan, you have to choose the exact plan and this hold true for other carriers such as Cofinity, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna. Most vendors let you choose one plan. In a busy practice, a front desk does not alway have the time to search the correct plan. This has been discussed with out Athena account rep multiple times and does not sound like this is to change in the near future. Posting team is not alway the most accurate when posting payments from payers.

### "Business Office Manager"

July 20, 2016

4.0

This particular call did not help resolve my problem. We went live with Streamline today and were having several issues. Mine was in relation to workflow for entering charges. Streamline crippled my previous workflow and CSC couldn't guide me in it, however after about 1 1/2 hours I came up with and alternate route that I can live with.

Pros

Auto eligibility, worklist and bucket functionality, family billing, reports

Cons

Posting efficiency and reliance on claim notes being accurate. Not being able to send all my BCBS claims to a package set up specifically for Ky patients.

### "Patient Safety Risk"

October 4, 2019

2.0

Meetings have been set up with SME's and documentation has been sent to our account manager. It appears some issues are being fixed without communicating they have been fixed. Feels like a cover up because of liability.

Pros

Software is user friendly. I appreciate the value of Athena gets paid based on revenue.

Cons

Poor functionality of Pharmacy! Major patient safety issues!

Reason for choosing athenaOne

I liked their business model and it felt like Athena was very engaged in providing a quality product designed for a critical access hospital.

### "Good product"

February 14, 2017

4.0

Transition to AthenaHealth and working with the product has been relatively easy. Patient's chart is on one page, no need to open endless smaller windows. Electronic faxing definitely cut down on the office consumption of the paper. I have been working with AthenaHealth for 3.5 years now and will not change it for any other EMR.

Pros

Cloud based - easy to work from home, updates show up automatically. Fantastic support!!! Flow of the patient visits are nice. Easy to see current and historical prescriptions.

Cons

Searching for inbox faxed documents is not easy. Faxing out only to a single recipient.

### "athenahealth "

November 7, 2016

3.0

We have been using athenahealth since 2011. There have been many changes for the better. Athenahealth strives to be ahead of the curve when it comes to regulatory changes. They are proactive. Customer service is very helpful and seem to answer 90% of question up front. What they can't answer is researched and answered in a timely manner.

Pros

Proactive in regulatory changes. They are above in their field. Reports are amazing and customer service is very professional.

Cons

Office need to maintain the control with adjustments because they are aware of extenuating circumstances with each case.

### "The Cutting Edge"

July 19, 2016

4.0

We have been using Athena since Aug. of 2012. We have been very pleased with all three products. I love that Athena is on the cutting edge of technology and leading the market in its field.

Pros

I love that it can be accessed anywhere and thru a secure connection. I also love that my 12 providers can individualize the product to their needs. It does not require that each provider use it the same.

Cons

Occasionally Athena will roll out an update that creates some problems but they are usually attentive to complaints and they try to resolve them expeditiously.

### "Mediocre "

June 15, 2018

2.0

Pros

It is relatively easy to navigate within the system and with some upgrades in functionality, it has been better - i.e., upgrade with last patient's charts opened, etc.

Cons

Of late, the customer support structure has changed is somewhat frustrating to get a "live person." It also depends on the person you get and their level of knowledge - one person can be really great and so super helpful and the other person can literally not know what to do. It's great when you get a live person, but even getting to a live person isn't easy as it used to be.

### "Easy to use but has flaws"

November 4, 2018

4.0

Overall, it keeps medical charts organized and it is easy to update and change information. They do try to update the software regularly, so that is nice.

Pros

It is generally easy to use. A recent update in the last year, so the layout is much improved. It is pretty user-friendly.

Cons

First, there is not enough security in terms of being able to secure certain types of notes to keep them from being accessible to people within your network. Second, when you send patient cases back and forth, there is no notification of new notes on an open case.

### "EHR/athenahealth "

February 17, 2017

4.0

I feel the software compared to other EMR is pretty easy to use. Athenanet is always doing updates trying to improve the process. They have just done major upgrades in the last couple of months. Their customer service and tech support are always there when needed.

Cons

When they did the upgrades you now cannot see the refills on the scripts unless you go into the full encounter or when filled. Also, you use to be able to cut and paste in all areas within intake and exam sections and now you cannot. Meds cannot be copied and pasted into other fills like before.

### "Imrpving"

February 22, 2017

4.0

Continues to evolve. Had been using it for about 6 years now. We had signed a contract in 2011. In 2013, certainly be started getting charged for every single" closed loop" order, example each E prescription was charged 1 dollar. Each lab value was charged. If I ordered CBC, CMP, A1c, lipids for 1 patient, I was charged. This became quite expensive. This forces us to use paper prescriptions instead of the e-prescriptions. We paid per provider at the time of registration to enroll with sure scripts. We write about 40,000 prescriptions every year. As you could imagine, this becomes expensive fairly quickly.

Pros

Cloud based

Cons

Expensive

### "Make sure to double check the posting!!"

July 9, 2019

2.0

Pros

The scheduling feature works well and the EHR is better than others we have worked with.

Cons

The billing and posting by Athena is absolutely terrible. We have found payments posted without receipt of the actual payment and HUNDREDS of payments/adjustments posted incorrectly. Claims are not worked like we expected. It just seems that if payment doesn't come automatically or they can't get it taken care of with one phone call, the claim is placed in a "hold" for the office to work. The posting is outsourced and unfortunately I do not believe the employees are trained properly. Our in office billing team has found thousands of dollars worth of mistakes but what really scares us is how many we have missed! (of course we should NOT have to go back behind and double check work in the first place)

### "Review of Athenahealth EMR"

November 17, 2016

3.0

Although my experience with this particular EMR was brief, I was training staff on it for another office. I was able to see it s limitations and determine it would be a problem for this practice. I have had 46 years of medical office management with several different practice management and EMR systems.

Pros

I appreciate some of the charting and reporting features. Since this software is typically used for multiple locations it is very helpful data can be combined for correct analysis. I also appreciate the ability to communicate across the other facilities.

Cons

I feel it is extremely necessary for the front office staff to have the upper hand when making appointments and not having the balance or even the billing situation available while scheduling an appointment is a significant draw back to me. I prefer to review data "Mrs. Jones there was a problem with your insurance claim 3 weeks ago, you will need to call your insurance and get that resolved or be prepared to pay $XX.Xx when you check in today".

### "Consummate Professionals"

January 11, 2017

5.0

We have been using this software since October 2014. They are more than a software vendor. They have a staff that is full of knowledgeable professionals that can assist in every facet of our practice. They were the best source for making the transition from ICD9 to ICD 10. They are able to assist in every facet of our practice by dealing with both software issues and or Best Practic Management.

Pros

The software is user-friendly. The staff is well trained and very very polite, patient and professional.

Cons

They do not have an office in my hometown where I can go to work for them.

### "Excellent but complex"

April 26, 2018

4.0

Somewhat pricey but for all practical purpose, it's a complete system. The support is not too bad but you need lots of practice and mistakes to really finally understand how it works. The accounting system if very complex; you almost have to be a CPA to understand how it's functioning. Overall, it's an industry standard and ranks with some of the best.

Pros

The through coverage of all aspects of a medical practice, large or small. It incorporates everything an office needs to accomplish and tries to make it complete.

Cons

complexity of the accounting portion is extremely hard to learn and takes a lot of time to learn. It requires constant attention to detail and gets out of control quickly if not monitored constantly.

Our small family practice with two doctors and 1 physician's assistant has been using athenaCollector since 2001, making it much easier for my front office staff to concentrate on what is really important--our patients! They do not have to waste time with billing problems, posting checks, chasing insurance denials-athena does it all for us. In 2008 we started athenaClinicals with athenaCommunicator, and the same can be said for our clinical staff. We can concentrate on giving the best care possible to our patients. AthenaClinicals makes it easy to do this, and with their guidance we were able to receive meaningful use money in 2012, and we have already attested for 2013 meaningful use, so we expect to recieve our 2nd installment from Medicare very soon. Implementation was relatively painless, and we were able to ramp up to full speed much faster than expected, within several weeks, when we thought it might be several months. In our case, the day we went live we "saved" $25-30,000 immediately as we no longer needed our transcriptionist. Then within six months, after all charts were abstracted, we no longer needed 2 file clerks, as the system is truly paperless, so there is nothing to file. Because Athena does much of the work for us, we run a "lean, mean" operation, and I like to say we can "do more with less", making our small practice very profitable. Athena is a forward thinking company, always striving to improve their product. Problems, as few as they are, are handled quickly and efficiently. Our 5th year anniversary is coming up april 30th, and I feel this was one of the best decisions I made in my 25 years of practice.

### "Fantastic!!"

October 31, 2017

5.0

Increased revenue, better quality indicators, MU and MIPS support, revenue cycle support

Pros

This software is very user friendly. We are using them in out clinic, ED, and IP space with no issues. There is a learning curve, like any EHR, but once your staff get it there is no turning back. Within 60 days of going live our hospital revenue increased by 11%. Their customer service is amazing, our account manager is on site every month and calls in weekly. I didn't get this from Epic, CPSI, or Meditech!

Cons

I would like to see more people within their CSC. This company is growing fast, and a few extra hands to assist with questions would be beneficial.

### "Great outpatient practice EHR"

February 15, 2017

4.0

Athena is very user friendly and has the key elements for a successful transition to EHR. It is fairly pediatric friendly, though check in could be improved for kids. The portal is a nice feature for parents but we are still working on what gets "published" on it. The support folks are hit or miss. You do have to wait and they can't always fix it in real time. However, they are constantly improving!

Pros

Quick easy documentation. Nice pediatric features.

Cons

Too many clicks for documenting vaccines. Tough to find old documents, you have to use a clumsy search tool.

I work at a 7 MD and 1 NP pediatric practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut. We were on paper (looseleaf and staples and rubber stamps) until late 2009 when we were rescued by athenaHealth. The beauty of athenaClinicals is that there is only one version of athenaClinicals, and that is the updated version. They update for us and it is constantly being updated. The great thing about athena is that you don't "buy" it, you are basically a subscriber and they do all the updates, all the back office work for you. The implementation process went beautifully, we worked really hard to get it right at the start so we (purposefully) overtrained ourselves. We knew the ins and out of the system and we prepared all the charts as well. The training and preparation for implementation was 12 weeks. We decreased our schedule for 4 weeks BUT by 2 weeks we were back to our pre-implementation speed. We have never looked back. athenaClinicals is easy to use, quite intuitive and very flexible. Many different physicians can use the system in their own way. The customer support is wonderful - the people who answer our calls are knowledgeable and follow up. We work with Athena as as partners. We are doing very well financially and have enhanced our bottom line through efficiencies and through charge capture. We are not coding higher. We know that because athena has amazing report writing and data mining capabilities. All that said, none of us, even the skeptics within our practice, would ever go back to paper, nor would we even entertain the possibility of changing EHRs. Unlike many of our colleagues in other practices, we are exceptionally happy with our selection of athenaHealth for our EHR!
