We find it to be extremely easy to use, easy to train new employees on and overall a good practice management system. We do not use the EMR, so i can not comment on that.

Pros

Ease of use! Updates are always great and effortless to learn. Easy to reach customer service compared with other PM systems

Cons

Outsourcing to India is not always great experience, but you do get someone.

Cloud based system functionality has become a barrier for our small organization. Several clicks, and several steps to get anywhere in the system. Feels like you work circles before getting any resolve. The team philosophy Athena brags of to repair issues and challenges takes far too long- it give the impression that your problem has to be transferred around the company to find someone to fix the issue. We are required to work through our account manager to speak to any technical staff, or experts which just add delays to an already slow response time. Generally 6 week resolve time on any issues sent to Customer Service. They just don't give the impression that we, the facility, are their customer.

Cons

Billing, charges and claims seem to go into a sink hole. Payers don't get the claims, and custom rules we have to create, just to send a clean claim, hit up against each other and the claim is stuck on hold for days, weeks or even months. The set up and implementation, it is hard to know what you need, but we followed the recommendation and now have too many departments built makes the system seem impossible to find what you need.

Just like any system, Athena has good and bad. The most recent forced update which primarily grouped together similar insurances under a "super package". This change has caused many difficulties. One "super package" can include an insurance that does not require a referral while another insurance under the same package requires an authorization. There is no simple way to figure out exactly which insurance plan you are looking at unless you open up the eligibility details which is time consuming.

Pros

The scheduling feature is extremely easy to use. You can use as many or as little filters as you would like to schedule a patient.

Cons

The insurance policies in Athena have moved around and combined with plans they should not have been combined with. It is a nightmare to run a report for a certain insurance or trying to decipher which specific plan you are looking at without multiple steps. When making changes to a group of claims (for example adding a missing insurance), you have to go into each individual claim to make the change - there is no way to make the same change to multiple claims.

Overall Athena is great from a user stand point. Usually, support is good, but if you're not a super user then you're out of luck.

Pros

This EMR is so easy to use. I am new to civilian EMR systems and I was able to pick it up quite easily. Scheduling and billing are simple and straight forward.

Cons

You need super user access to make any update and no one in the office has that capability even the owner and the support is usually good, but if you don't have super user access they're pretty much useless.

Able to manage several patients at once. The templates fill in quickly making it pretty easy to keep up in a busy clinical setting.

Pros

I like that it looks pretty. It is easy to switch between different offices and different doctors. Adding diagnostic pictures is very easy to help with monitoring wounds and other things.

Cons

It is nice that you can have templates, but when you are entering things into each area of the template, you have to grab the mouse and move it and click where you want it. Some other software programs offer an option like "F2" to skip to the fields that need to be populated. The room assignments work well, but is a little time consuming.

please do your research and make sure you know what you are getting. I am sure for some, this works great, but if you have issues or quirky IPA, getting Athena to help to make your claims go through can be painful. Too many clicks on PM system to get things done quickly. Better layout of the calendar for schedule would be nice.

Pros

good customer service team - though sometimes cannot resolve issue right away, always courteous and willing to help

Cons

cumbersome with multiple back and forth to make changes specific to your practice needs. Their insurance AR may look good, but that's because if they cannot figure something out, they will send a statement to the patients so the AR for "self pay" is outrageous.

Pros

Obtaining insurance eligibility and getting immediate feedback to correct claims prior to submission. Billing software is very good, but then you lose control of the claims since Athena has payments made to a bank account they control.

Cons

Patient notes -- very difficult to make your own templates and what is pre-installed is awkward and missing options. The team that does the billing is unresponsive when there are issues. Support is slow we also had an issue since January, unsolved. System limitations--you can't message a patient directly--that simple feature is missing. You can't fax most documents from the software, only certain items. Cannot export chart to a fax number--has to be with a pre-existing contact in the software (must ask permission with a form to add a contact).

Built for the medical billing and EHR community. Very robust and thorough with many features to assist with new regulations

Cons

Lack of customer support and lack of knowledge regarding billing staff. Very cumbersome with claims rules and holds that are not worked by trained AR or RCM staff.

IS NOT SUPPOETED ON ANY DEVICE OTHER THAN AN IPHONE. I WAS NOT EVEN ABLE TO ATTEMPT AN EXPERIENCE.

Pros

I was esctatic when my co-worker showed me I could access on my mobile device. I wouldn't have to be around my laptop if I needed to check labs or do some quick follow up on my day off.

Cons

But then I tried and tried and tried to log in on my phone. To no avail. Not supported by my browser. I looked at all their advertising for how amazing Athena clinicals is....tried to figure out why I couldn't get it to work for me. Called customer support at Athena only to hear what I dreaded - only supported by iPhones. Why? How in 2018 does a company provide a service that can only be utilized by iPhones!? We operate their Athena EHR in our office on Windows based computers....does not require Macs to operate their EHR, why limit their mobile support to iPhones!??? My advice from tech support, make a suggestion. Anyone else out there who doesn't operate on an iOhine, can you please make a suggestion too!?

### "96% is all you need to know"

Income has increased. Imagine if a physician group made their own software, read every newsletter and learned from every claim from tens of thousands of doctors. You would expect a complicated (insurance companies fault), but a complete system. I would not be able to continue to practice solo if not for my collections being maximized. With a 96% first pass rate, there is less time chasing unpaid claims.

Pros

athenaHealth has been a vital part of our business structure since 2005. We rely on athenaHealth for business efficiency and for the documentation of our patients’ medical records. The document management, the interfaces, the quality management tools, the portal and many other features built into this EHR are paramount to the success of our providers and ultimately the financial success of our practice. The athenaHealth product continues to evolve at a rapid pace in this ever-changing world of healthcare.

Cons

The insurance referral documentation process. We can document well, but cannot FAX directly from the system. I think there is a new solution in development at athena to address this issue.

It increases the amount of time it takes to do notes. Takes much longer to review prior notes. I have been nauseous since I switched from all the screen moving and roll out screens. I just want my classic back

Pros

Athenahealth EHR is a competitively priced solution that has a decent feature set well suited to a individual provider practice. It's integrated billing components, having been the first part of the software developed, is solid.

Cons

The interface and many of the UI control concepts are dated on the user front end. The administrative interfaces are similarly dated and make a great deal of extra work for organizations that have many providers, locations, specialties, etc...

For the most part Athena has a great over all package deal.

Pros

Athena submits for MU, PQRS, MIPS, etc. and makes sure that you are satisfying these measures. It's also nice to have clinicals and collections in one system.

Cons

The payer site team has some issues with pulling EOB's from certain payers and posting them with the payments.

Easy, pleasurable interface to navigate. Also easy to train others on it, overall a great product. I loved working on it compared to others I have worked with.

Cons

Sometimes it was a little bit laggy and crashed often during the work day. After a phone call to athena they were usually able to fix it quickly though.

Pros

It is web based, so can access relatively easily from any place with an internet connection

Cons

The layout and workflow are not intuitive. Athena requires way too many clicks to get things done. It sends way to many items to tasks. For instance, I send a letter to the referring doc and sign it. Then it goes to may task box to REVIEW AGAIN and finally approve and send. This results in an enormous file folder of tasks to go through at the end of the day. Another example of a workflow problem, you write an order for a lab, you must click a button called "sign orders" as well as click the save button to actually execute the order. Why two steps? Why not just click save and have it send? Another.....every fax that comes to our fax number now goes to Athena and they send it to the provider whose name it was sent to. My staff used to look at these faxes before me and get things done (med refills, appt requests, etc) and only involve me if it needed my level of attention. Now I am the one weeding through these faxes. Very poorly thought out. Looking for old notes and labs are difficult to find. We converted from Urochart because we needed a better option for managing multiple clinic sites. I rue the day we switched. Urochart had great workflow for their EMR with all notes, labs, reports on a timeline, easy to access and visualize.

My doctor uses this. This software seems to be popular.

Cons

Athena Patient Portal Support for portal.athenahealth.com is seriously subpar in my opinion. On June 11, 2020 I called the Athena support number to get some basic questions answered about the portal.athenahealth.com. The rep said, "We can't provide support to patients. You must call the doctor's office. The doctor's office provides the support for our software. The doctor's office then should call us." I called the doctor's office. The receptionist said, "I don't know anything about that." Several of my physicians offices now use this software. They seem unaware that they are required to do software support. If you license Athena Health you are signing up to support their software. In my opinion, this is a bizarre situation. You are warned.

When scanning in information sometimes looking for specific things is difficult to find. The pricing is a bit much

We now have 5 providers using Athena. 4 doing keyboard input and 1 using Dragon. All of us feel comfortable and efficient with the EMR. Very little slow down initially compared to other programs I have used and at this time I feel it has improved my efficiency and productivity. Lab tables had been a problem, but getting better. Support is excellent. I love the ease of ordering and referrals

Pros

The most I like is that we have help sorting out messages from pharmacies and faxes to each provider. It's also super easy to prescribe medications. It's also an organized EMR which has a lot of options

Cons

Oh man. There are so many issues with this EMR. The main issue that hasn't been resolved for months is superbills. We are an out of network practice and many of our patients need superbills with the right information that insurance requires. There hasn't been a way we can easily get these. I am manually doing ALL superbills and with a company that has 20 clinicians, it takes A LOT of time. I just wish this issue would get fixed and be as easy as going to a specific section and click "print" with whichever necessary information I need to include on there.

Pros

Athena is a user friendly program. It is easy to use the scheduling system. Other areas in the system are fairly easy to use as well.

Cons

Athena could improve in a few areas. It sounds like there will be some updates coming out soon, so hopefully billing claims will be better.

It's been a year since we have implemented Athena in our practice. The full benefits are amazing, we have been able to be more efficient in every aspect of patient care. Faster scheduling, easier insurance verification, and less overall paperwork.

Pros

We love getting paid faster and being able to track the revenue cycle of claims.

Cons

Sometimes getting things done from the Athena account management can be a hassle. Incase there is an issue, it could 1-3 weeks to resolve depending on the issue and response.
