### "It seems like Athena went out of their way to make an incredibly complicated system"

Pros

EMR system is okay but definitely not superior to competitors including the free EMRs out there

Cons

The system is not intuitive at all. I had to call customer support for just about everything including just to verify that I had done things correctly as I learned early on that even if it appeared like something was done correctly, it wasn't- I either wasn't in the correct "area" or I didn't then go to step 2 (for things that really don't need to have more than one step!) There are several areas in the system where you can leave notes that appear to be communication notes with the Athena staff- but NOOOOooo, these notes just sit there for your own amusement. If you want Athena staff to do something or be aware of something, you better call (and chances are you'll get customer support based in India FYI).

Choosing an EMR platform that allowed for a surgical specialty practice was a must. I have found that athenaClinicals is extremely adaptable in creating both visit notes as well as documentation for surgical procedures, which flows seamlessly to billing. The user can easily make changes to the system with immediate availability, but support services are also excellent. The company is very open to input and system improvements and is updated continuously - no need for costly software upgrades. Start-up costs are minimal; a computer with Internet access is all that is needed. I was able to recreate the look and flow of my paper charting system almost exactly, eliminating the learning curve for a new format. The support with updates to meet government requirements and meaningful use is excellent, and I am one of the few physicians in the area to receive payments for successful implementation. The data mining ability is excellent, and as a specialist, I am easily able to monitor trends right down to who is referring patients and for which conditions. As well as track my own productivity and trend payment amount by insurer, which is very important in negotiating insurance contracts as payment while planning future service lines. Overall, I am extremely happy with athenaClinicals.

### "Beautiful Software"

Pros

This software is sleek and beautiful. It has great ease of use for patients and myself and the office. It gives a lot of information that is pertinent to the patient. Patients have said that they stay with my office not only for the great care, but also because they felt "in the loop" using this software. These days, the technology we use and share is so important. Not everyone is health literate, but this helps make it easier.

Cons

I don't have much that I don't like about this software. I am still a fairly new user. Some cons are that it is expensive and can be slow at times.

Help is too hard to get even for easy questions. And it seems each person you get to will tell you that is not their area of knowledge

Pros

For the physician, templates are easy to make and the notes are very readable. Easy to navigate thru an encounter note.

Cons

NO help with billing. Payers were not set up correctly after multiple calls and hours on the phone. Then you are left to fix things yourself and figure out all the "kick" codes to resubmit. Definitely NOT the RCM that they advertise

Pros

Athena's customer service is excellent. They are extremely available and really take the time to help solve the problem. Athena is also great as they are always making updates many of which are made based on customer requests. They are really listening to our needs and trying to meet our growing demands.

Cons

Initially I found the navigation to be a little challenging as it was unintuitive to me, however once I learned the system it was not a problem.

It is a great product as long as you don’t mind changing your practice to align with Athena’s product and you are willing to learn all about it (thru videos and handouts) in order to train your entire staff on how to get a square peg (your practice) to fit into a round hole (AthenaNet). Prior to going live, Athena didn’t bother to find out how we operated or what tools we were currently utilizing. Here we are several months into implementation and we still don’t have everything we need. It not uncommon to hear, “Our tools aren’t as robust as what you were doing”. We have even been told, “I don’t think we will ever get there.” Another standard answer is, “There is a training video to watch” or “Try O-help”. So you waste a lot of time trying to find answers to your questions which is difficult because Athena has their own language. And, once again, this would be resolved if only they took the time to learn your business in the first place.

Pros

Great concept, but A LONG way from being a great product.

Athena is relatively easy to use. On the clinical side I wish it was easier to move between intake and exam. I also seen to get several duplicates of the same tasks. When you call for support, the technicians are very helpful and work with you to resolve any issues.

Pros

When I began using Athena a year ago I thought I would never learn it and that it would slow me down. On the contrary, my practice is more efficient and we no longer have to search for charts. I was surprised how quickly I learned and I'm happy that we began using this program. My staff also like the program.

Cons

I guess the thing I like least about using Athena is that all I spend more time than I did before reviewing labs, sending patients notes on the portal but at the same time, my patients are getting better care in that they have access to results and my referring doctors get my notes instantly. It really is a better system than paper charts that I used for 30 years

The classic format was easy to navigate and was a significant advantage over other EMRs

Cons

The streamlined version forced on us last week is the worst program ever and is definitely not what I paid for. It is thoroughly cumbersome and loses the global view that was available with the classic version where you could scroll up and down patient's chart. Don't understand the logic for the change. What's there input from busy clinicians for this change? I still have to read a positive review on this new interface. Buyers beware!

Pros

I like the fact we can do everything in one system, scheduling is easy and fast. i also like being able to check patient insurance on demand.

Cons

I dont like that we have had a constant glitch for more than 6 months when processing copays. it randomly gives us an error message and doesnt communicate with our credit card terminal and noone at Athena has been able to fix this. It is very frustrating when you have to explain it over and over and cannot get any anwers or resolution.

We started using Athena when we opened our practice in July 2016 and they have been fabulous. From the first call with the sales rep to the customer service department I talk to constantly, it is so easy to work with Athena.

Pros

I love the billing feature. It makes it so much easier to code it and then they batch it and bill it. They also submit appeals on your behalf. The system is super easy to use and very user-friendly. You can create your own templates and macros to make charting a breeze.

Pros

Customer care is always pleasant, but not helpful. Do not feel it is their fault. I think it is a company miscommunication.

Cons

The TOS reporting is horrible. It literally DOES NOT add up! It makes it so difficult to re drop a claim and should a company call and say they didn't recieve a claim, you can not print the CMS 1500 to fax it. They are switching up the product so often that when you call the call center the person who answers it can not help and they transfer to someone who DOES NOT about the change.

Athena definitely has potential, however it is not one of my favorite EMR's used. It is nice how it can departmentalize different physicians and checking their schedules is relatively easy.

Cons

Athena is not very user friendly. Do not try to run reports, as these can be highly inaccurate.

Pros

I like the flow of the charts from intake to checkout. I also like that Athena keeps up with Meaningful Use requirements as to avoid penalties and get the most reimbursement possible from CMS. Lastly, the availability of the support team is really good at taking you step by step to make any corrections within the EHR.

Cons

Because it is web-based, when the server goes "down" there is nothing that can be done and is slows productivity. However, compared to software based EHR's, the correction time is really good.
